BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is associated with inflammation and abnormal lipid metabolism. However, a single inflammatory index or a single lipid index cannot accurately predict the prognosis of CVD independently because it is prone to be affected by various confounding factors. METHODS: This population-based cohort study included 6,554 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to investigate correlations. In the present study, the occurrence of CVD events such as stroke and heart disease was evaluated by considering self-reported diagnoses at the beginning of the study and during wave 4, and a restricted cubic spline model was used to investigate potential nonlinear relationships in addition to multivariate logistic regression models. Stratified analyses were performed to examine how sociodemographic characteristics may influence the results. RESULTS: Seven years of follow-up (2011-2018) revealed that 786 people (11.99%) developed CVD. According to the adjusted model, the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio is a contributing factor to CVD risk (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.05-1.64). In addition, a nonlinear relationship was observed between the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio and the occurrence of new CVD, stroke, or cardiac issues (Poverall <0.05, Pnonlinear <0.05). Moreover, noteworthy associations between the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio and age were detected in the stratified analysis (P = 0.048), indicating that younger participants had more negative effects of a high hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio. CONCLUSIONS: According to the present cohort study, a high hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio is a significant risk factor for CVD, new stroke, and heart problems. Early intervention in patients with increased hs-CRP/HDL-C ratios may further reduce the incidence of CVD, in addition to focusing on independent lipid markers or independent inflammatory markers.

Tamoxifen (TAM) is an accredited drug used for treatment and prevention of breast cancer. Due to the long-term taking and the trend for women to delay childbearing, inadvertent conception occasionally occurs during TAM treatment. To explore the effects of TAM on a fetus, pregnant mice at gestation day 16.5 were orally administrated with different concentrations of TAM. Molecular biology techniques were used to analyze the effects of TAM on primordial follicle assembly of female offspring and the mechanism. It was found that maternal TAM exposure affected primordial follicle assembly and damaged the ovarian reserve in 3 dpp offspring. Up to 21 dpp, the follicular development had not recovered, with significantly decreased antral follicles and decreased total follicle number after maternal TAM exposure. Cell proliferation was significantly inhibited; however, the cell apoptosis was induced by maternal TAM exposure. Epigenetic regulation was also involved in the process of TAM induced abnormal primordial follicle assembly. The changed levels of H3K4me3, H3K9me3, and H3K27me3 presented the function of histone methylation in the regulation of the effects of maternal TAM exposure on the reproduction of female offspring. Moreover, the changed level of RNA m6A modification and the changed expression of genes related to transmethylation and demethylation proved the role of m6A in the process. Maternal TAM exposure led to abnormal primordial follicle assembly and follicular development by affecting cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, and epigenetics.

Anthracyclines and trastuzumab are widely used to treat breast cancer but increase the risk of cardiomyopathy and heart failure. With the use of trastuzumab and anthracycline-containing medications, this study intends to evaluate the effectiveness and security of current treatments against cardiotoxicity. We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which used at least one angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), or beta-blocker (BB) to prevent cardiotoxicity of antineoplastic agents for breast cancer, in 4 databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science) from inception to 11 May 2022, without language restrictions. The outcome of interest was left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and adverse events. Stata 15 and R software 4.2.1 were used to perform all statistical analyses. The Cochrane version 2 of the risk of bias tool was used to assess the risk of bias, and the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) assessment was used to appraise the quality of the evidence. Fifteen randomized clinical studies with a total of 1977 patients were included in the analysis. The included studies demonstrated statistically significant LVEF in the ACEI/ARB and BB treatment groups (χ2 = 184.75, I2 = 88.6%, p = 0.000; SMD 0.556, 95% CI 0.299 to 0.813). In an exploratory subgroup analysis, the benefit of experimental agents on LVEF, whether anthracyclines or trastuzumab, was prominent in patients treated with ACEIs, ARBs, and BBs. Compared to placebo, ACEI/ARB and BB treatments in breast cancer patients protect against cardiotoxicity after trastuzumab and anthracycline-containing medication treatment, indicating a benefit for both.

Mitochondrial homeostasis plays essential role for the proper functioning of the kidney. NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit V1 (NDUFV1) is an enzyme in the complex I of electron transport chain (ETC) in mitochondria. In the present study, we examined the effects of NDUFV1 on renal function in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model mice. Our data showed that increased expression of NDUFV1 improves kidney function as evidenced by the decreases in blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine in UUO mice. Moreover, NDUFV1 also maintains renal structures and alleviates renal fibrosis induced by UUO surgery. Mechanistically, NDUFV1 mitigates the increased oxidative stress in the kidney in UUO model mice. Meanwhile, increased expression of NDUFV1 in the kidney improves the integrity of the complex I and potentiates the complex I activity. Overall, these results indicate that the ETC complex I plays a beneficial role against renal dysfunction induced by acute kidney injury such as UUO. Therefore, NDUFV1 might be a druggable target for developing agents for dealing with disabled mitochondria-associated renal diseases.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to have profound functions in regulating cell fate specification, cell differentiation, organogenesis, and disease, but their physiological roles in controlling cellular metabolism and whole-body metabolic homeostasis are less well understood. We previously identified a skeletal muscle-specific long intergenic noncoding RNA (linc-RNA) activator of myogenesis, Linc-RAM, which enhances muscle cell differentiation during development and regeneration. Here, we report that Linc-RAM exerts a physiological function in regulating skeletal muscle metabolism and the basal metabolic rate to maintain whole-body metabolic homeostasis. We first demonstrate that Linc-RAM is preferentially expressed in type-II enriched glycolytic myofibers, in which its level is more than 60-fold higher compared to that in differentiated myotubes. Consistently, genetic deletion of the Linc-RAM gene in mice increases the expression levels of genes encoding oxidative fiber versions of myosin heavy chains and decreases those of genes encoding rate-limiting enzymes for glycolytic metabolism. Physiologically, Linc-RAM-knockout mice exhibit a higher basal metabolic rate, elevated insulin sensitivity and reduced fat deposition compared to their wild-type littermates. Together, our findings indicate that Linc-RAM is a metabolic regulator of skeletal muscle metabolism and may represent a potential pharmaceutical target for preventing and/or treating metabolic diseases, including obesity.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is often associated with muscle atrophy. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are still not well understood. Here, we treated 5/6-nephrectomized (5/6Nx) rats with resveratrol and found that this treatment greatly improves renal function as evidenced by reduced proteinuria and cystatin C. Moreover, resveratrol ameliorates renal fibrosis by reducing transforming growth factor ß (TGF-ß) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). Meanwhile, muscle atrophy in these 5/6Nx rats was largely attenuated by resveratrol. Immunoprecipitation revealed that SIRT1 physically interacts with FoxO1 in muscle, and this interaction was weakened in 5/6Nx rats. As a consequence, acetylated FoxO1 was increased in muscle of 5/6Nx rats. The application of resveratrol markedly reverses this trend. These data point out that SIRT1 is a key factor for linking renal disease and muscle atrophy. Indeed, both renal dysfunction and muscle atrophy were further aggravated by 5/6Nx in Sirt1+/- mice. Taken together, our data indicate that SIRT1 plays a pivotal role in muscle atrophy in CKD, and FoxO1 might be a substrate of SIRT1 in this process. Furthermore, resveratrol, together with other agonists of SIRT1, may hold great therapeutic potentials for treating CKD and its related muscle atrophy.

Alfalfa root rot caused by Fusarium tricinctum is one of the most important soilborne diseases, resulting in significant losses to alfalfa agriculture worldwide. Fungicides used in management of the disease affect the environment and human health. In this study, a strain of Ochrobactrum intermedium (I-5), isolated from alfalfa rhizosphere soil, exhibited strong antifungal activity against a number of causative pathogens of alfalfa root rot and showed the strongest antagonistic activity against F. tricinctum (a longest radius/shortest radius ratio of 3.09). When applied at 10%, a filtrate of the strain liquid culture significantly reduced the spore production and germination and mycelial growth of F. tricinctum, and the inhibition rates were 76.67, 78.93, and 55.77%, respectively. Furthermore, a filtrate and suspension of the strain, when applied at 10%, reduced alfalfa root rot by >73% in repeated experiments. The strain clearly promoted the activities of invertase, urease, cellulose, and neutral phosphatase in alfalfa rhizosphere soil and significantly reduced the damage to rhizosphere soil quality attributable to alfalfa root rot. Moreover, the strain clearly promoted the growth of alfalfa without causing any evident damage to plants. The active substance produced by the strain was insensitive to heat and ultraviolet irradiation and displayed optimal efficacy at pH 8. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study describing the use of O. intermedium for the biological control of alfalfa root rot. O. intermedium (I-5) has potential for application in the control of alfalfa root rot and improvement of the quality of cultivated alfalfa.

Tumor fibrotic stroma forms complex barriers for therapeutic nanomedicine. Although nanoparticle vehicles are promising in overcoming biological barriers for drug delivery, fibrosis causes hypoxia, immunosuppression and limited immunocytes infiltration, and thus reduces antitumor efficacy of nanosystems. Herein, we report the development of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) responsive honeycomb-like nanoassemblies of carbon dots (CDs) to spatially program the delivery of multiple therapeutics for enhanced antitumor chemoimmunotherapy. Doxorubicin (DOX) and immunotherapeutic enhancer (Fe ions) are immobilized on the surface of CDs, whereas tumor microenvironment modifier (losartan, LOS) is encapsulated within the mesopores. The drugs-loaded nanoassemblies disassociate into individual CDs to release LOS to mitigate stroma and hypoxia in response to CAFs. The individual CDs carrying DOX and Fe ion efficiently penetrate deep into tumor to trigger intensified immune responses. Our in vitro and in vivo studies show that the nanoassemblies exhibit effective T cells infiltration, tumor growth inhibition and lung metastasis prevention, thereby providing a therapeutic platform for desmoplasia solid tumor.

Maize (Zea mays L.) stalk rot, caused primarily by the soil-borne fungal pathogen Fusarium spp., reduces maize quality and yield worldwide. This study was undertaken to develop and utilize a rapid continuous injection inoculation technique to evaluate maize inbred lines for resistance to Fusarium spp. under field conditions, which could facilitate the identification and development of new sources of host resistance to manage the disease. Continuous injection inoculation is a rapid, stable, and simple method that can evaluate the resistance of maize inbred lines to Fusarium stalk rot (FSR) within 20 days. To verify the feasibility and reliability of inoculation method, Fusarium graminearum, F. proliferatum, and F. subglutinans were isolated, identified, and inoculated into maize at the six-leaf stage (V6) by a veterinary adjustable bottle continuous vaccination syringe. Our results showed that out of a total of 97 inbred maize lines, six (6.2%) showed high resistance to maize stalk rot, 20 showed resistance (20.6%), 32 were susceptible (33.0%), and 39 were very susceptible (40.2%). Based on simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, an analysis of molecular variance indicated a significant correlation between population of the inbred maize line and resistance to FSR (P = 0.001). Overall, this study provided a systematic, rapid, stable, and simple identification method for maize inbred lines resistant to FSR in the field. At the same time, this method was also suitable for genetic diversity analysis of maize inbred lines resistant to FSR.

To clarify and refine the specific elements of post-transplant recovery in lung transplant recipients, we explored the four dimensions of recovery: physiological, psychological, social, and habitual. This study is a scoping review. Two authors conducted a comprehensive electronic literature search to identify studies published from the establishment of the database to August 2022. Deductive coding was utilized to identify and categorize elements using a predefined list of the four components (physiological, psychological, social, and habitual recovery) based on the framework of post-transplant recovery proposed by Lundmark et al. Inductive coding was applied for concepts requiring further classification. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews guideline. Systematic searching identified 8,616 potential records, of which 51 studies met the inclusion criteria. Ten subdimensions and their corresponding elements were identified and categorized into four dimensions of recovery following lung transplantation. The subdimensions included physiological recovery (including symptom experience, complications, physical function, and energy reserve), psychological recovery (encompassing affective distress, psychological adaptation, and transition from illness to health), social recovery (involving family adaptation and social adaptation), and habit recovery (focusing on health behavior).

Regulating the coordination environment of Fe-Nx sites is an efficient but challenging approach for promoting the intrinsic catalytic activity of single-atom Fe/N-codoped carbon (Fe-N-C) toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, low-coordination Fe-N3 sites coupled with carbon vacancies (Fe-N3/CV) are directionally constructed in Fe-N-C via pyrolysis of a metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor with N3-Zn-O-Fe moieties, which are delicately prefabricated by chemically anchoring Fe3+ onto a H2O-etching induced linker-missing Zn-N3 site in the MOF precursor. The optimized Fe-N-C with the Fe-N3/CV sites displays a high ORR half-wave potential of 0.92 V (vs RHE), which is attributed to the optimized electronic structure and binding strengths of the active Fe center toward the ORR intermediates stemming from the synergy of the asymmetric configuration of Fe-N3 as well as the adjacent carbon vacancies. This work could be enlightening for the design and construction of high-activity coupling sites in metal and nitrogen-codoped carbon catalysts.

In eukaryotic organisms, the most common internal modification of messenger RNA (mRNA) is N6-methyladenosine (m6A). This modification can be dynamically and reversibly controlled by specific enzymes known as m6A writers and erasers. The fat-mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) catalyzes RNA demethylation and plays a critical role in various physiological and pathological processes. Our research identified dynamic alterations in both m6A and FTO during the assembly of primordial follicles, with an inverse relationship observed for m6A levels and nuclear-localized FTO expression. Application of Fto small interfering RNA (siRNA) altered the expression of genes related to cell proliferation, hormone regulation, and cell chemotaxis, and affected RNA alternative splicing. Overexpression of the full-length Fto gene led to changes in m6A levels, alternative splicing of Cdk5, cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and proportion of primordial follicles. Conversely, overexpression of Fto lacking a nuclear localization signal (NLS) did not significantly alter m6A levels or primordial follicle assembly. These findings suggest that FTO, localized in the nucleus but not in the cytoplasm, regulates RNA m6A demethylation and plays a role in cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and primordial follicle assembly. These results highlight the potential of m6A and its eraser FTO as possible biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

In recent years, drug repositioning has emerged as a promising alternative to the time-consuming, expensive and risky process of developing new drugs for diseases. However, the current database for drug repositioning faces several issues, including insufficient data volume, restricted data types, algorithm inaccuracies resulting from the neglect of multidimensional or heterogeneous data, a lack of systematic organization of literature data associated with drug repositioning, limited analytical capabilities and user-unfriendly webpage interfaces. Hence, we have established the first all-encompassing database called DrugRepoBank, consisting of two main modules: the 'Literature' module and the 'Prediction' module. The 'Literature' module serves as the largest repository of literature-supported drug repositioning data with experimental evidence, encompassing 169 repositioned drugs from 134 articles from 1 January 2000 to 1 July 2023. The 'Prediction' module employs 18 efficient algorithms, including similarity-based, artificial-intelligence-based, signature-based and network-based methods to predict repositioned drug candidates. The DrugRepoBank features an interactive and user-friendly web interface and offers comprehensive functionalities such as bioinformatics analysis of disease signatures. When users provide information about a drug, target or disease of interest, DrugRepoBank offers new indications and targets for the drug, proposes new drugs that bind to the target or suggests potential drugs for the queried disease. Additionally, it provides basic information about drugs, targets or diseases, along with supporting literature. We utilize three case studies to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of predictively repositioned drugs within DrugRepoBank. The establishment of the DrugRepoBank database will significantly accelerate the pace of drug repositioning. Database URL:  https://awi.cuhk.edu.cn/DrugRepoBank.

Grafting is applied in Solanaceae to improve growth and quality traits. However, grafting potato onto a wooden goji rootstock is rare. Our study introduces a novel distant grafting technique to investigate potato scion responses, specifically regarding photosynthetic and tuber nutritional quality. The physiological and transcriptomic findings reveal an increase in photosynthesis ratio and carbon fixation in potato leaves after 45 days of grafting due to the upregulation of pivotal genes (PsbA, PPC1, rbcl, and GAPDH). After 95 days of long-term growth, the leaf redox balance was maintained with intensified chlorophyll synthesis, facilitated by the enrichment of crucial genes (GUN4, CHLH, CHLP, CAO) and several light-harvesting proteins (Lhca and Lhcb) in potato leaves. The tubers of grafted plants showed a 6.5% increase in crude protein, 51% in anthocyanin, and lower carbohydrate content. Goji altered the expression of tubers genes involved in assimilatory sulfate reduction, which subsequently affects cysteine-methionine biosynthesis. Furthermore, the tuber transcriptome shows ABA signaling and transcription factors regulate the expression of key biosynthetic genes involved in inducing the secondary metabolites, such as scopoletin and anthocyanin accumulation, which are primary polyphenols in goji. Our innovative grafting approach offers valuable insights into the interactions between woody and herbaceous plants for developing future strategies to modulate growth efficiency and tuber quality in the face of climate challenges and to meet the demand for nutritious food.

The rocking-chair lithium-ion capacitors (RLICs), composed of a battery-type cathode and capacitive-type anode, alleviates the issue of increased internal resistance caused by electrolyte consumption during the cycling process of the lithium-ion capacitors (LICs). However, the poor conductivity of cathode materials and the mismatch between the cathode and anode are the key issues that hinder its commercial application. In this work, a modification simplification strategy is proposed to tailor the conductivity of the cathode and matching characteristic with the anode. The in situ grown lithium manganate (LMO) is featured with a three-dimensional conductive network constructed by reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The optimized LMO/rGO composite cathode demonstrates an excellent rate performance, lithium-ion diffusion rate, and cycling performance. After assembling an RLICs with activated carbon (AC), the RLICs exhibits an energy density of as high as 239.11 Wh/kg at a power density of 400 W/kg. Even at a power density of 200 kW/kg, its energy density can maintain at 39.9 Wh/kg. These excellent electrochemical performances are mainly attributed to the compounding of LMO with rGO, which not only improves the conductivity of the cathode but also realizes a better matching with the capacitive-type anode. This modification strategy provides a reference for the further development of energy storage devices suitable for actual production conditions and application scenarios.

Objective: The accurate detection of phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) autoantibody is crucial in the diagnosis and monitoring of primary membranous nephropathy (pMN). While enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the commonly used detection method, its complexity and time-consuming nature pose challenges, especially for small sample sizes. Chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) has emerged as a rapid alternative for clinical immunoassays. This study aims to compare the sensitivity, specificity, and precision of CLIA and ELISA in detecting PLA2R autoantibody. Method: A total of 145 patients with biopsy-confirmed primary membranous nephropathy and 85 patients with non-membranous nephropathy were enrolled in this comparative study. CLIA and ELISA were employed to test all samples for the presence of PLA2R autoantibodies. Statistical analysis of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) was performed using SPSS 26.0. The diagnostic value of ELISA and CLIA for pMN was analyzed using the ROC curve, and Correlation analysis was performed using Spearman. Results: Serum levels of anti-PLA2R antibody in pMN group were significantly higher than those in nMN group(P < 0.05). The accuracy of CLIA for detecting anti-PLA2R antibody was 76.96%, while ELISA showed an accuracy of 74.78%. The sensitivity for CLIA was 64.83%, compared to 60% for ELISA. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the two methods (P > 0.05). The overall qualitative agreement of anti-PLA2R detection was 93.35% (95% confidence interval[CI] 89.47-96.3). ROC curve analysis showed that AUC of anti-PLA2R antibody detected by ELISA and CLIA were 0.8737 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8270-0.9204), 0.8914 (95% confidence interval [CI]0.8495-0.9332), respectively. The Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant correlation between them(P < 0.05). Notably, CLIA demonstrated a significant time-saving advantage, particularly when the sample size was less than 200, and especially when it was less than 20. Conclusion: CLIA and ELISA showed similar accuracy and consistency in detecting anti-PLA2R antibody for primary membranous nephropathy. However, CLIA exhibited a significant advantage in terms of automation and time-saving compared to ELISA, particularly for smaller sample sizes. This finding suggests that CLIA has the potential to become a preferred and widely adopted test in the future.

Background: Radiology-based prognostic biomarkers play a crucial role in patient counseling, enhancing surveillance, and designing clinical trials effectively. This study aims to assess the predictive significance of preoperative CT-based tumor contour irregularity in determining clinical outcomes among patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods: We conducted a retrospective multi-institutional review involving 2218 patients pathologically diagnosed with RCC. The training and internal validation sets included patients at Zhongshan Hospital between January 2009 and August 2019. The external test set comprised patients from the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (January 2016 to January 2018), the Xiamen Branch of Zhongshan Hospital (November 2017 to June 2023), and the Cancer Imaging Archive. The contour irregularity degree (CID), quantified as the ratio of irregular cross-sections to the total tumor cross-sections, was analyzed for its prognostic relevance across different subgroups of RCC patients. A novel CID-based scoring system was developed, and its predictive efficacy was evaluated and compared with existing prognostic models. Findings: The CID exhibited significant discriminatory power in predicting overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and disease-specific survival (DSS) among patients with RCC tumors measuring 3 cm or larger (all p < 0.001). Multivariate analyses confirmed the CID as an independent prognostic indicator. Notably, the CID augmented prognostic stratification among RCC patients within distinct risk subgroups delineated by SSIGN models and ISUP grades. The CID-based nomogram (C-Model) demonstrated robust predictive performance, with C-index values of 0.88 (95%CI: 0.84-0.92) in the training set, 0.92 (95%CI: 0.88-0.98) in the internal validation set, and 0.86 (95%CI: 0.81-0.90) in the external test set, surpassing existing prognostic models. Interpretation: Routine imaging-based assessment of the CID serves as an independent prognostic factor, offering incremental prognostic value to existing models in RCC patients with tumors measuring 3 cm or larger. Antisolvent engineering is routinely used to modulate the crystallization of perovskite films as they can offer an additional driving force for nucleation. Actually, the intervention of antisolvent into nucleation is thought to involve some relatively fast and complex processes, which, however, are not fully understood so far. Here, the diffusion of the organic amine cation FA+ (one dominated precursor) and its distribution in a spin-coating process in different antisolvents is simulated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. It is suggested that a moderate diffusion rate (like that in the case of toluene as an antisolvent) not only enables to form a very uniform distribution of FA+ ions on the substrate, beneficial to the uniform nucleation of the intermediate phase, but also can balance the nucleation and growth rates of the intermediate phase, thereby suppressing undesired heterogeneous nucleation and growth. Results show that the perovskite film fabricated using toluene as an antisolvent has a high quality, based on which higher power conversion efficiencies of up to 24.32% are achieved for perovskite solar cells.

To explore the relationship between physical exercise and smoking behavior among Chinese residents aged 16 years and older. Analysis based on 29,466 validated cases in the 2018 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS 2018). The chi-square test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for comparative analysis between groups. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between physical exercise and smoking behavior. Gender and birth cohort differences in the relationship between physical exercise and smoking behavior were explored based on stratified regression analysis using gender and birth cohort as stratified variables, respectively. Robustness testing based on multiple linear regression analysis using a replacement data approach. There were 8735 cases of smokers among the respondents. After controlling for relevant confounders, there was a significant negative association between physical exercise and smoking behavior among residents [OR 0.718, 95% CI (0.673, 0.765), P < 0.01]. Physical exercise was more significantly associated with smoking behavior among male residents [OR 0.694, 95% CI (0.649, 0.743), P < 0.01], while it was not significantly associated with smoking behavior among female residents [OR 0.901, 95% CI (0.743, 1.093), P > 0.05]. Physical exercise was more significantly associated with smoking behavior in the pre-1948 (OR 0.748), 1959-1968 (OR 0.748), 1969-1978 (OR 0.812), 1989-1998 (OR 0.576) and post-1999 (OR 0.411) birth cohorts, and the association decreased over time and with social change. The results of the robustness test showed that frequency of exercise was significantly and negatively associated with smoking behavior among residents [OR 0.961, 95% CI (0.951, 0.970), P < 0.01]. Physical exercise is negatively associated with smoking behavior among Chinese residents aged 16 years and older, especially among male residents. There is a cohort effect between physical exercise and smoking behavior of the population, that is, the relationship between the two decreases with social change.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is a common complication after surgical procedures. Radical resection of esophageal cancer is a complex procedure, one of the most extensive and traumatic surgical procedures in oncological surgery, and the incidence of postoperative chronic pain is high, seriously affecting patients' postoperative recovery. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the incidence of CPSP in patients with esophageal cancer and to analyze the risk factors associated with its occurrence in order to provide certain prevention and treatment ideas for clinical prevention and reduction of CPSP. METHODS: Patients with radical esophageal cancer resection were selected as the study subjects, and the clinical data regarding to patients' preoperative comorbidities, ASA grading, surgical method, use of selective COX-2 inhibitors, postoperative analgesic pump use, and patients' postoperative tumor recurrence time were collected. The differences in clinical data between the CPSP group and no-CPSP group were compared to analyze the risk factors for the occurrence of CPSP. RESULTS: A total of 262 patients were included; 57 (21.76%) developed CPSP, and there were statistical differences between the two groups in terms of selective COX-2 inhibitor and postoperative analgesic pump use rates and surgical modality (p < 0.05), and logistic regression analysis showed that age and length of surgery increased the risk of CPSP, perioperative selective COX-2 inhibitor use decreased the risk of CPSP occurrence (p < 0.05), the extent of tumor infiltration and regional lymph node metastasis were risk factors for shortening tumor-free survival (TFS), and age and use of selective COX-2 inhibitor were influential factors for prolonging TFS (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with esophageal cancer have a high incidence of postoperative chronic pain, with youth and length of surgery being risk factors for CPSP, and perioperative pain management with selective COX-2 inhibitors can reduce the incidence of CPSP and is associated with prolonged TFS.
