RESUMEN

Machine perception uses advanced sensors to collect information about the surrounding scene for situational awareness1-7. State-of-the-art machine perception8 using active sonar, radar and LiDAR to enhance camera vision9 faces difficulties when the number of intelligent agents scales up10,11. Exploiting omnipresent heat signal could be a new frontier for scalable perception. However, objects and their environment constantly emit and scatter thermal radiation, leading to textureless images famously known as the 'ghosting effect'12. Thermal vision thus has no specificity limited by information loss, whereas thermal ranging-crucial for navigation-has been elusive even when combined with artificial intelligence (AI)13. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate heat-assisted detection and ranging (HADAR) overcoming this open challenge of ghosting and benchmark it against AI-enhanced thermal sensing. HADAR not only sees texture and depth through the darkness as if it were day but also perceives decluttered physical attributes beyond RGB or thermal vision, paving the way to fully passive and physics-aware machine perception. We develop HADAR estimation theory and address its photonic shot-noise limits depicting information-theoretic bounds to HADAR-based AI performance. HADAR ranging at night beats thermal ranging and shows an accuracy comparable with RGB stereovision in daylight. Our automated HADAR thermography reaches the Cramér-Rao bound on temperature accuracy, beating existing thermography techniques. Our work leads to a disruptive technology that can accelerate the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)14 with HADAR-based autonomous navigation and human-robot social interactions.

High-temperature thermal photonics presents unique challenges for engineers as the database of materials that can withstand extreme environments are limited. In particular, ceramics with high temperature stability that can support coupled light-matter excitations, that is, polaritons, open new avenues for engineering radiative heat transfer. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an emerging ceramic 2D material that possesses low-loss polaritons in two spectrally distinct mid-infrared frequency bands. The hyperbolic nature of these frequency bands leads to a large local density of states (LDOS). In 2D form, these polaritonic states are dark modes, bound to the material. In cylindrical form, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) create subwavelength particles capable of coupling these dark modes to radiative ones. In this study, we leverage the high-frequency optical phonons present in BNNTs to create strong mid-IR thermal antenna emitters at high temperatures (938 K). Through direct measurement of thermal emission of a disordered system of BNNTs, we confirm their radiative polaritonic modes and show that the antenna behavior can be observed even in a disordered system. These are among the highest-frequency optical phonon polaritons that exist and could be used as high-temperature mid-IR thermal nanoantenna sources.

BACKGROUND: The oviparity-viviparity transition is a major evolutionary event, likely altering the reproductive process of the organisms involved. Residual yolk, a portion of yolk remaining unutilized at hatching or birth as parental investment in care, has been investigated in many oviparous amniotes but remained largely unknown in viviparous species. Here, we used data from 20 (12 oviparous and 8 viviparous) species of snakes to see if the oviparity-viviparity transition alters the partitioning of yolk in embryonic snakes. We used ANCOVA to test whether offspring size, mass and components at hatching or birth differed between the sexes in each species. We used both ordinary least squares and phylogenetic generalized least squares regressions to test whether relationships between selected pairs of offspring components were significant. We used phylogenetic ANOVA to test whether offspring components differed between oviparous and viviparous species and, more specifically, the hypothesis that viviparous snakes invest more in the yolk as parental investment in embryogenesis to produce more well developed offspring that are larger in linear size. RESULTS: In none of the 20 species was sex a significant source of variation in any offspring component examined. Newborn viviparous snakes on average contained proportionally more water and, after accounting for body dry mass, had larger carcasses but smaller residual yolks than did newly hatched oviparous snakes. The rates at which carcass dry mass (CDM) and fat body dry mass (FDM) increased with residual yolk dry mass (YDM) did not differ between newborn oviparous and viviparous snakes. Neither CDM nor FDM differed between newborn oviparous and viviparous snakes after accounting for YDM. CONCLUSIONS: Our results are not consistent with the hypothesis that the partitioning of yolk between embryonic and post-embryonic stages differs between snakes that differ in parity mode, but instead show that the partitioning of yolk in embryonic snakes is species-specific or phylogenetically related. We conclude that the oviparity-viviparity transition does not alter yolk partitioning in embryonic snakes.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) represent a promising class of therapeutics for the targeted delivery of highly potent cytotoxic drugs to tumor cells to improve bioactivity while minimizing side effects. ADCs are composed of both small and large molecules and therefore have complex molecular structures. In vivo biotransformations may further increase the complexity of ADCs, representing a unique challenge for bioanalytical assays. Quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF MS) with electrospray ionization has been widely used for characterization of intact ADCs. However, interpretation of ADC biotransformations with small mass changes, for the intact molecule, remains a limitation due to the insufficient mass resolution and accuracy of Q-TOF MS. Here, we have investigated in vivo biotransformations of multiple site-specific THIOMAB antibody-drug conjugates (TDCs), in the intact form, using a high-resolution, accurate-mass (HR/AM) MS approach. Compared with conventional Q-TOF MS, HR/AM Orbitrap MS enabled more comprehensive identification of ADC biotransformations. It was particularly beneficial for characterizing ADC modifications with small mass changes such as partial drug loss and hydrolysis. This strategy has significantly enhanced our capability to elucidate ADC biotransformations and help understand ADC efficacy and safety in vivo.

Tourists' environmentally responsible behavior (TERB) is one of the key areas in tourism as it concerns tourism sustainability that further influences a destination's competitiveness and image. This study sought to deepen the formation of TERB through tourists' degree of environmental perception, mediated by their feeling of awe towards the environment, and moderated by their level of face consciousness. Data were collected from tourists in Tibet and the findings indicated that awe exerted partial mediation on the tourists' perception-behavior relationship. Furthermore, face consciousness moderated the mediated relationship of humanistic environmental perception, awe, and TERB. This study adds value to existing tourism studies by revealing the influences of awe on constructing tourists' attitude in sustainable tourism. From a practical perspective, the findings offer insights for destination management organizations (DMOs) in promoting tourists' environmentally responsible behavior that fosters sustainable tourism development.

Sevoflurane is one of the most commonly used general anesthetics for children and infants. Recent research indicates that repeated exposure to sevoflurane in neonates induces cognitive and fine motor deficits. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) agonists have garnered significant attention as potential therapies for a variety of neurological conditions. In this research, we evaluated whether pretreatment with rosiglitazone in neonatal mice could address myelination defects, cognitive impairment, and fine motor dysfunction via PPARγ. The mice were exposed to 3% sevoflurane for 2 h on postnatal days 6-8 (P6-P8). Behavioral tests were conducted from P29 to P34. Additionally, we evaluated morphological and functional changes related to myelin. Our results showed that rosiglitazone pretreatment significantly ameliorated the cognitive and fine motor impairments of repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposure. In addition, rosiglitazone pretreatment promoted oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) differentiation and myelination. This suggests that rosiglitazone may be used in clinical settings to enhance the security of neonatal sevoflurane exposure. Furthermore, PPARγ and fatty acid synthase (FASN) may be mediators for rosiglitazone, which alleviates myelination defects, cognitive impairment, and fine motor dysfunction.

Traditional ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic quantitative analytical methods face challenges in simultaneous and long-term accurate measurement of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrate due to spectral overlap and the interference from stochastic background caused by turbidity and chromaticity in water. Addressing these limitations, a compact dual optical path spectrum detection sensor is introduced, and a novel ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic quantitative analysis model based on physics-informed multi-task learning (PI-MTL) is designed. Incorporating a physics-informed block, the PI-MTL model integrates pre-existing physical knowledge for enhanced feature extraction specific to each task. A multi-task loss wrapper strategy is also employed, facilitating comprehensive loss evaluation and adaptation to stochastic backgrounds. This novel approach significantly outperforms conventional models in COD and nitrate measurement under stochastic background interference, achieving impressive prediction R2 values of 0.941 for COD and 0.9575 for nitrate, while reducing root mean squared error (RMSE) by 60.89 % for COD and 77.3 % for nitrate in comparison to the conventional chemometric model partial least squares regression (PLSR), and by 30.59 % and 65.96 %, respectively, in comparison to a benchmark convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The promising results emphasize its potential as a spectroscopic instrument designed for online multi-parameter water quality monitoring against stochastic background interference, enabling long-term accurate measurement of COD and nitrate levels.

Ketamine, the widely used intravenous anesthetic, has been reported to cause neurotoxicity and disturbs normal neurogenesis. However, the efficacy of current treatment strategies targeting ketamine's neurotoxicity remains limited. Lipoxin A4 methyl ester (LXA4 ME) is relatively stable lipoxin analog, which serves an important role in protecting against early brain injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of LXA4 ME on ketamine-caused cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Cell viability, apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) were detected by adopting experimental techniques including CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry, western blotting and transmission electron microscope. Furthermore, examining the expression of leptin and its receptor (LepRb), we also measured the levels of activation of the leptin signaling pathway. Our results showed that LXA4 ME intervention promoted the cell viability, inhibited cell apoptosis, and reduced the expression of ER stress related protein and morphological changes induced by ketamine. In addition, inhibition of leptin signaling pathway caused by ketamine could be reversed by LXA4 ME. However, as the specific inhibitor of leptin pathway, leptin antagonist triple mutant human recombinant (leptin tA) attenuated the cytoprotective effect of LXA4 ME against ketamine-induced neurotoxicity. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated LXA4 ME could exert a neuroprotective effect on ketamine-induced neuronal injury via activation of the leptin signaling pathway.

Clemastine, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved compound, is recognized as a first-generation, widely available antihistamine that reduces histamine-induced symptoms. Evidence has confirmed that clemastine can transport across the blood-brain barrier and act on specific neurons and neuroglia to exert its protective effect. In this review, we summarize the beneficial effects of clemastine in various central nervous system (CNS) disorders, including neurodegenerative disease, neurodevelopmental deficits, brain injury, and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, we highlight key cellular links between clemastine and different CNS cells, in particular in oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs), oligodendrocytes (OLs), microglia, and neurons.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a common complication that increases morbidity and mortality in elderly patients undergoing surgery. Abnormal microglia activation causes neuroinflammation and contributes to the development of PND. Growing evidence shows that lipoxin A4 (LXA4), a lipid mediator, possesses potent anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, we investigated whether LXA4 exerted a protective effect against surgery-induced neurocognitive deficits and explored the underlying mechanisms. Mice were subjected to laparotomy under sevoflurane anesthesia to establish an animal model of PND. LXA4 (15 µg/kg/d, ip) was administered three days prior surgery. We showed that LXA4 significantly alleviated surgery-induced cognitive impairments, attenuated neuroinflammation and microglial activation in hippocampus. In BV2 microglial cells treated with LPS (100 ng/mL), pre-application of LXA4 (100 nΜ) significantly inhibited M1 polarization and promoted M2 polarization, and decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-6) and increased the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10). LXA4 also mitigated LPS-regulated expression of HO-1, NOX2, and SOD1, elevated SOD activity, and attenuated ROS production. Furthermore, we revealed that LXA4 increased the expression of SIRT1 and decreased the protein level of acetylated NF-κB p65. SIRT1 inhibitor EX-527 abolished the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant response effects of LXA4 in BV2 microglial cells. Hence, LXA4 is a potential therapeutic agent for surgery-induced neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and cognitive deficit, and the effect of LXA4 is probably mediated by the activation of the SIRT1/NF-κB signaling pathway in microglia.

Spinning thermal radiation is a unique phenomenon observed in condensed astronomical objects, including the Wolf-Rayet star EZ-CMa and the red degenerate star G99-47, due to the existence of strong magnetic fields. Here, by designing symmetry-broken metasurfaces, we demonstrate that spinning thermal radiation with a nonvanishing optical helicity can be realized even without applying a magnetic field. We design nonvanishing optical helicity by engineering a dispersionless band that emits omnidirectional spinning thermal radiation, where our design reaches 39% of the fundamental limit. Our results firmly suggest that metasurfaces can impart spin coherence in the incoherent radiation excited by thermal fluctuations. The symmetry-based design strategy also provides a general pathway for controlling thermal radiation in its temporal and spin coherence.

In recent years, minsu (homestays), a non-standard tourist accommodation, have been gaining popularity in China. The minsu has become an innovative driving force promoting the transformation of tourist destinations. This paper attempts to explore the relationship between the minsu's environment (ambience) and customer loyalty, as customer loyalty is crucial to the sustainability of minsu and tourism destinations. This paper adopts Lijiang, China, as an empirical example to explore the relationship between the multi-dimensional environment of minsu and its influence on customer loyalty. Findings include: (1) the multi-dimensional environment perception of minsu includes spatial, cultural and social environment perception, all of which have a significant positive impact on emotional experience in varying degrees; (2) the emotional experience of minsu guests plays a significant mediating role between the minsu's environmental perception and loyalty; (3) personality traits of openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness play a moderating role in the impact of residential space environment perception on emotional experience. Using the S-O-R model, this paper introduces emotional experience and personality traits into the relationship model between the minsu's environment perception and customer loyalty and contributes to extant literature on the influence of customer loyalty in tourist destinations. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

An effective myoglobin-Nafion film is prepared by introducing gold nanoparticles in through a simple procedure by ion-exchange combined with electrochemical reduction. Gold nanoparticles are highly dispersed in myoglobin-Nafion film with an average size of 2.3 +/- 0.2 nm. The electrochemical behavior of myoglobin entrapped in the film has been carefully investigated with cyclic voltammetry. The results show that the introduction of gold nanoparticles into myoglobin-Nafion film makes the direct electron transfer of myoglobin efficient. A pair of well-defined redox peaks for myoglobin heme Fe(II)/Fe(III) is observed with a formal potential of -0.150 V in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). The electrochemical parameters of myoglobin in the composite film are further calculated with the results of the electron-transfer rate constant (k(s)) as 0.93 s(-1) and the charge transfer coefficient (alpha) as 0.69. The experimental results also demonstrate that the immobilized myoglobin retains its electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and the catalytic reduction peak of myoglobin appear in a linear relationship with H2O2 concentration in the range of 10.0-235.0 microM with correlation coefficient of 0.9970. Thus fabricated Au/Mb/Nafion electrode should give a new approach for developing redox protein or enzyme-based biosensors.
