RESUMEN

Fecal specimens from human subjects in daily contact with calves shedding Escherichia coli containing an R plasmid were analyzed for the presence of E coli and the plasmid. A low level of crossover was found to occur unrelated to whether or not the calves were receiving tetracycline.

RESUMEN

Using tuberculin (purified protein derivative) as the test antigen, 29 dogs with different vaccination histories were tested with the lymphocyte transformation (LT) assay, the indirect agarose leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) assay, and the skin test for delayed type hypersensitivity. All three tests were done simultaneously on each dog. The LT assay results were found to correlate well (r = 0.88) with the skin test results, whereas LMI results were found to correlate poorly (r = 0.55) with the skin test results. It was concluded that the LT assay is a more reliable measure of cell mediated immunity in the dog than is the LMI assay.

RESUMEN

Parmacokinetics of penicillin G was determined for the turkey. The study was prompted by the isolation of a sulfonamide-resistant strain of Pasteurella multocida from tissues of turkeys involved in an outbreak of fowl cholera and the subsequent discovery that little pharmacologic information was available concerning other antimicrobial agents in that species. Penicillin G was chosen for study because P multocida is susceptible to this antibiotic. The elimination of the antibiotic followed first-order kinetics, and the half-life was found to be 0.5 hours. Parenteral administration of benzathine-procaine penicillin G resulted in higher concentrations, which persisted for longer periods than did procaine or potassium salts of the antibiotic.

RESUMEN

Serum from dogs with generalized demodicosis suppressed the in vitro reactivity of peripheral lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin. Suppression occurred with peripheral lymphocytes from normal dogs or from dogs with generalized demodicosis. Serums from dogs in remission were no longer suppressive. The data indicate that peripheral lymphoid cells obtained from dogs with generalized demodicosis do not respond differently in vitro to phytohemagglutinin than do lymphoid cells from normal dogs when either is cultured in the presence of serum from normal dogs.
