PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence, associated factors, and outcome of persistent subretinal fluid (SRF) after vitrectomy for macular hole-associated retinal detachment (MHRD). METHODS: A total of 158 eyes from 156 patients with MHRD who achieved macular hole closure after primary vitrectomy were included in the analysis; persistent SRF was defined as the presence of SRF for more than 1 month after first surgery. Preoperative and postoperative parameters were analyzed for their relationship with SRF development. RESULTS: Persistent SRF was observed in 19 eyes (12.0% of 158) postoperatively. Seven eyes (36.8% of 19) with persistent SRF eventually displayed complete absorption during follow-up. Univariate analysis revealed that eyes with persistent SRF were statistically associated with internal limiting membrane inverted flap, duration of symptoms, tamponade (perfluoropropane/silicone oil: 14/5 vs. 35/104, P < 0.001), and MHRD subtype (Type 1/Type 2/Type 3: 15/4/0 vs. 60/40/39, P = 0.003). In multivariate analysis, only internal limiting membrane inverted flap (odds ratio, 15.778, 95% confidence interval, 3.170-78.523; P = 0.001) was positively associated with persistent SRF. There were no significant differences in best-corrected visual acuity improvement ( P = 0.425) between the SRF involved foveal and without involved foveal groups and no significant differences between the SRF complete absorption and incomplete absorption groups. CONCLUSION: Absorption of persistent SRF may be more difficult in MHRD eyes than in ordinary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment eyes. The internal limiting membrane inverted flap in MHRD was associated with a greater likelihood of persistent SRF. The location and incomplete absorption of persistent SRF did not seem to be associated with the final visual outcome.

BACKGROUND: The number of elderly with mental disorders is increasing, but few studies have been concerned with the physical condition and activities of daily living (ADL) of these patients. This study aims to describe the physical condition and ADL of patients with mental illnesses (PMI) from different age groups, which provides evidence to improve mental health services for PMI. METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, the samples were divided into three groups of less than 60 years old (group 1), 60-74 years old (group 2), and over 75 years old (group 3) for comparison. Participants' ADL and physical condition were measure by Barthel Index (BI), Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), Standardised swallowing assessment (SSA) and Short Form of Mini Nutrition Assessment (MNA-SF). The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were used to measure psychological condition. RESULTS: Totally, 392 participants had been recruited, meanwhile 86% of them were diagnosed with at least one physical disease. There were statistically significant differences in the three groups of participants in BI (F = 50.603, P < 0.001), FAQ (F = 40.332, P < 0.001), SSA (F = 28.574, P < 0.001), and MNA-SF (F = 18.366, P < 0.001). Group 2 and group 3 had significantly lower scores in BI and FAQ than group 1, and the SSA scores were significantly higher than the participants in group 1. In the negative symptoms subscale of BPRS, the mean score of group 3 was significantly higher than groups 1 and 2. Negative symptom subscale has different degrees of correlation with BI (r = -0.537), FAQ (r = 0.643), SSA (r = 0.480), MNA (r = -0.325) and MMSE (r = 0.607). In addition, the participants with comorbidities were related to BI (r = -0.364). CONCLUSION: Somatic comorbidities play a pivotal role in the clinical characteristics of elderly patients with mental illness, thus greater effort should be paid to elderly patients suffering from mental illness with dysphagia, malnutrition, and cognitive decline. Further, the negative symptoms of elderly patients with mental disorders also deserve attention.

The domestic health care system has been facing a difficult task, especially in medical care, and Chinese nurses are under tremendous psychological pressure. Psychological support is a protective factor to relieve stress. This study examined the stress level and characteristics of Chinese nurses with different psychological support-seeking behaviours. Data from online questionnaires for this cross-sectional study were collected between January 2020 and February 2020 and yielded 2248 valid questionnaires for analysis with a response rate of 99.8%. General information of the respondents was also collected. The nurses' stress levels were assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). T tests, chi-square tests, and linear regression were used to examine the relationships among the factors. The results of this survey showed that between January and February 2020, 26.9% of nurses received psychological counselling, and the proportion was higher among men and nurses with lower education. The PSS-10 was related to gender, age group, provincial severity, and confidence in the control of the epidemic. The results showed that psychological support can effectively improve the confidence of domestic nurses in the face of arduous work and effectively relieve the psychological pressure caused by a heavy workload.

Photoionization mass spectrometry (PI-MS) is a powerful and highly sensitive analytical technique for online monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, due to the large difference of PI cross sections for different compounds and the limitation of photon energy, the ability of lamp-based PI-MS for detection of compounds with low PI cross sections and high ionization energies (IEs) is insufficient. Although the ion production rate can be improved by elevating the ion source pressure, the problem of generating plenty of cluster ions, such as [MH]+·(H2O)n (n = 1 and 2) and [M2]+, needs be solved. In this work, we developed a new nonuniform electric field high-pressure photoionization/photoionization-induced chemical ionization (NEF-HPPI/PICI) source with the abilities of both HPPI and PICI, which was accomplished through ion-molecule reactions with high-intensity H3O+ reactant ions generated by photoelectron ionization (PEI) of water molecules. By establishing a nonuniform electric field in a three-zone ionization region to enhance in-source declustering and using 99.999% helium as the carrier gas, not only the formation of cluster ions was significantly diminished, but the ion transmission efficiency was also improved. Consequently, the main characteristic ion for each analyte both in HPPI and PICI occupied more than 80%, especially [HCOOH·H]+ with a yield ratio of 99.2% for formic acid. The analytical capacity of this system was demonstrated by operando monitoring the hydrocarbons and oxygenated VOC products during the methanol-to-olefins and methane conversion catalytic reaction processes, exhibiting wide potential applications in process monitoring, reaction mechanism research, and online quality control.

During the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19), there is a huge demand for medical masks. A mask manufacturer often receives a large amount of orders that must be processed within a short response time. It is of critical importance for the manufacturer to schedule and reschedule mask production tasks as efficiently as possible. However, when the number of tasks is large, most existing scheduling algorithms require very long computational time and, therefore, cannot meet the needs of emergency response. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end neural network, which takes a sequence of production tasks as inputs and produces a schedule of tasks in a real-time manner. The network is trained by reinforcement learning using the negative total tardiness as the reward signal. We applied the proposed approach to schedule emergency production tasks for a medical mask manufacturer during the peak of COVID-19 in China. Computational results show that the neural network scheduler can solve problem instances with hundreds of tasks within seconds. The objective function value obtained by the neural network scheduler is significantly better than those of existing constructive heuristics, and is close to those of the state-of-the-art metaheuristics whose computational time is unaffordable in practice.

Direct mass spectrometric measurements of saturated hydrocarbons, especially small n-alkanes, remains a great challenge because of low basicity and lack of ionizable functional groups. In this work, a novel high-pressure photoelectron-induced O2+ cation chemical ionization source (HPPI-OCI) at kPa based on a 10.6 eV krypton lamp was developed for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS). High-intensity O2+ reactant ions were generated by photoelectron ionization of air molecules in the double electric field ionization region. The quasi-molecular ions, [M-H]+, of C3-C6 n-alkanes, gradually dominated in the mass spectra when the ion source pressure was elevated from 88 to 1080 Pa, with more than 3 orders of magnitude improvement in signal intensity. As a result, the achieved limits of detection were lowered to 0.14, 0.11, 0.07, and 0.1 ppbv for propane, n-butane, n-pentane, and n-hexane, respectively. The performance of the HPPI-OCI TOFMS was first demonstrated by analysis of exhaled small n-alkanes from healthy smokers and nonsmokers. Then the concentration variations of exhaled small n-alkanes of four healthy volunteers were analyzed after alcohol consumption to explore the alcohol-hepatoxicity-related oxidative stress. In summary, this work provides new insights for controlling the O2+-participating chemical ionization by adjusting the ion source pressure and develops a novel direct mass spectrometric method for sensitive measurements of mall n-alkanes.

Objective: This study aims to assess the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in alleviating depression in older adults. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in 4 electronic databases and 1 registered database from inception up to July 2021 to identify relevant trials. The meta-analysis employed Hedge's g, along with its 95% CI, and associated z and P-values for the included studies, utilizing Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. Results: Qualitative synthesis was performed on 5 eligible studies. Evaluation of methodological quality and bias risk across the papers involved scrutiny of key variables due to the heterogeneous research formats. Our findings indicated a significant moderating effect of MBCT against current depressive symptoms in older adults (g = 0.53, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) = 0.31-0.75) and a similar effect size for anxiety (g = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.20-0.65). However, caution is warranted due to the limited number of studies and potential publication bias. Further extensive research with longer follow-up measures and larger sample sizes is essential. Conclusion: This study underscores the effectiveness of MBCT as a treatment for anxiety and despair in older individuals. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy should be recommended for its positive impact on older adults with depression, and the involvement of authorized psychiatric nurses is crucial for conducting successful MBCT interventions. However, caution is warranted due to the limited number of studies and potential publication bias. Further extensive research with longer follow-up measures and larger sample sizes is essential.

Fish sauce is a popular aquatic condiment with unique flavor. In this study, the changes in the chemical properties and metabolite profiling of fish sauce from large yellow croaker roes during fermentation at different temperatures were revealed. The results found that the contents of total acid, amino acid nitrogen, total soluble nitrogen and soluble salt-free solids of fish sauce fermented at 40 °C were higher than those in other temperatures groups (25 °C and 32 °C), while the contents of total volatile basic nitrogen were lower than other temperatures. Therefore, 40 °C was the ideal fermentation temperature for fish sauce. The metabolomics analysis showed that organic acids, amino acids, nucleotide, and lipid compounds were found to participate in the biosynthesis pathway. Compared to 25 °C and 32 °C, fermented at 40 °C could increase the abundance of metabolic substances in the fish sauce, such as sugar alcohols, L-Citrulline, L-Aspartic acid, L-Cysteine, Glutathione, and L-Arginine. These results provide a theoretical basis for the production of high-quality fish sauce and the high-value utilization of fish roes.

BACKGROUND: Although swallowing exercises are a fundamental treatment for dysphagia, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of swallowing training in patients with Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: We recruited 93 patients with Alzheimer's disease from three hospitals in Guangdong, China. This was a parallel armed randomized controlled trial that randomly assigned patients to intervention (n = 48) and control (n = 45) groups. The intervention group adopted systematic stepwise swallowing training for four weeks based on routine dysphagia care. The control group implemented routine dysphagia care, including diet and posture management and health education about swallowing dysfunction. The swallowing function was the primary outcome, which was assessed using the Water Swallowing Test and Standard Swallowing Assessment. An abnormal eating behavior questionnaire was used to assess the incidence of aberrant eating behavior in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form and Barthel index were adopted to evaluate the nutritional status and ability to carry out daily activities between groups. SPSS software was used to perform the chi-square test, t-test, and generalized estimation equation for data analysis. RESULTS: We analyzed the effects of the stepwise swallowing training program using the generalized estimating equation method. The intervention group exhibited greater improvements in their swallowing function (Water Swallowing Test: ß = -3.133, 95 % CI: -4.113, -2.154, P < 0.001; Standard Swallowing Assessment: ß = -5.813, 95 % CI: -7.782, -3.844, P < 0.001), abnormal eating behaviors (abnormal eating behavior questionnaire: ß = -13.324, 95 % CI: -21.643, -5.005, P = 0.002), daily function (Barthel index: ß = 11.280, 95 % CI: 4.021, 18.540, P = 0.002), and nutritional status (Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form: ß = 2.402, 95 % CI: 1.313, 3.490, P < 0.001) over time than the routine-care group in the fourth week. CONCLUSIONS: Stepwise swallowing training is a safe and effective intervention for managing dysphagia and other related symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

A better understanding of predator-prey interactions is crucial for the development of biological control strategies. The green lacewing, Chrysopa pallens, is a well-known generalist predator and reportedly functions as one of the most important biological control agents of insect pests. However, information regarding C. pallens' predation on tea plant pests, particularly notorious tea mites, remains largely unknown. In this study, we focused on the predator-prey relationship between C. pallens and an important tea mite pest, Acaphylla theae. We designed species-specific primers for the detection of A. theae DNA and established a PCR-based DNA gut content analysis assay. These results demonstrated that the primers were A. theae-specific and suitable for its molecular identification. The laboratory feeding experiment showed that the detectability success (DS50) of A. theae DNA remaining in C. pallens' guts was 2.9 h. We then performed a molecular detection of field predation, and achieved a 23.53% positive detection rate of A. theae DNA in the guts of field-collected C. pallens. This, for the first time, provides direct evidence that C. pallens can prey on A. theae in tea plantations. Finally, we tested the prey preference and estimated the predation ability of C. pallens on different developmental stages of A. theae. The results revealed that C. pallens had no significant preference for different developmental stages of A. theae. The functional responses of C. pallens' predation on different densities of A. theae at different developmental stages followed a Type II Holling model. The initial attack rate (a') ranged from 0.735 to 0.858 and the handling time (Th) was approximately 0.01. This study is the first to demonstrate the trophic interactions between C. pallens and A. theae and provides evidence for the development of biological control strategies against A. theae using C. pallens as a candidate predator.

The use of physical restraint had caused a series of unexpected impacts on patients, particularly psychological trauma. This qualitative study aimed to identify perspectives on physical restraint among patients with mental health conditions and to seek effective interventions targeting the psychological trauma which is caused by physical restraint. A semi-structured interview was conducted in a public psychiatric hospital in China to explore perspectives on physical restraint among 26 patients who had undergone or witnessed physical restraint. The interview was conducted by experienced and qualified interviewers with mental health service backgrounds. The interviews were recorded and transcribed into words, and then preliminary themes were extracted and coded, finally thematic analysis was used to identify focused themes. Five themes were extracted: these were as follows: (1) The negative effects of physical restraint on patients; (2) The impairment of the relationship between nurse and patient due to physical restraint; (3) The decrease in patients' treatment adherence caused by physical restraint; (4) The positive outcomes of physical restraint; (5) The expectations of patients for improving the quality of nursing care. Conclusively, the use of physical restraint had critical impacts on patients, including psychological trauma, destruction of the nurse-patient relationship, and decreased adherence of treatment. These negative effects could impede clinical work.

PURPOSE: To explore the pathological mechanism of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mediating neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and the potential role of the TLR4 coreceptor myeloid differentiation protein 2 (MD2). METHODS: In the study, we inhibited MD2 with the chalcone derivative L2H17 and we utilized a laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) mouse model and Tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP)-challenged rhesus choroid-retinal endothelial (RF/6A) cells to assess the effect of MD2 blockade on CNV. RESULTS: Inhibiting MD2 with L2H17 reduced angiogenesis in CNV mice, and significantly protected against retinal dysfunction. In retina and choroid/retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tissues, L2H17 reduced phospho-ERK, phospho-P65 but not phospho-P38, phospho-JNK, and reduced the transcriptional levels of IL-6, TNF-α, ICAM-1 but not VCAM-1. L2H17 could protect RF/6A against TBHP-induced inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, via inhibiting the TLR4/MD2 signaling pathway and the following downstream mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) activation. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibiting MD2 with L2H17 significantly reduced CNV, suppressed inflammation, and oxidative stress by antagonizing TLR4/MD2 pathway in an MD2-dependent manner. MD2 may be a potential therapeutic target and L2H17 may offer an alternative treatment strategy for nAMD.

High-pressure photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPPI-TOFMS) combined with dynamic headspace sampling was developed for rapid identification of adulteration in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The volatile organic compound (VOC) fingerprints of EVOO, refined rapeseed oil (r-RO), peanut oil (PO), corn oil (CO), fragrant rapeseed oil (f-RO), and sunflower oil (SO) were obtained in just 1.5 min, which enabled satisfactory classification of different edible oils. 1,4-Bis(methylene)cyclohexane and dimethyl disulfide were unique VOCs in r-RO and f-RO, respectively, while 2,5-dimethylpyrazine and 2-methylpyrazine were distinctive VOCs in PO. Percentages as low as 3% r-RO, 1% PO, and 1% f-RO in r-RO-EVOO, PO-EVOO, and f-RO-EVOO mixtures, respectively, were successfully identified based on the characteristic VOCs. Linear regression equations of these VOCs were established and utilized for predicting the adulteration proportions. The good agreements between the actual adulteration proportions and the predicted ones demonstrated that HPPI-TOFMS was reliable for the quantification of EVOO adulteration.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of dysphagia among Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients has become a public health and economic concern. Therefore, effective and accessible dysphagia treatments are needed. As a fundamental rehabilitation of dysphagia, swallowing muscle exercises have received increased attention. Stepwise swallowing training (SST), integrated with all swallowing organs movement, is expected to improve swallowing dysfunction among AD patients. By using a randomized controlled trial design, we propose a multi-center research to evaluate the effectiveness of SST program among AD patients. METHODS: A multi-center exploratory randomized controlled trial, with a 4-week follow-up period, will be conducted in three major public psychiatric hospitals in Guangdong, China. Participants in the control group will be assigned to routine dysphagia care, while participants in the intervention group will undergo the same nursing care and additionally receive the SST program. The SST program includes five sections of swallowing organs training: lip movement, facial movement, tongue movement, mandibular movement, and neck movement. Primary outcomes evaluate the swallowing function, namely, Water Swallowing Test (WTS) and Standard Swallowing Assessment (SSA). Secondary outcomes aim at measuring the improvement of negative impacts of dysphagia, namely eating behavior, ability of daily activity, and nutritional status. Data will be collected at baseline (T1), at 2 weeks (T2, intervention), and 4 weeks after intervention (T3, follow-up). DISCUSSION: This study will offer trial-based evidence of the effectiveness of SST in relieving dysphagia among AD patients. SST program is expected to improve both the swallowing function and reduce the negative impacts of dysphagia, with an exploration of acceptability in the SST program. Objective: This study investigates the prevalence of everyday functional impairment among older adults with schizophrenia and builds a predictive model of functional decline. Methods: A total of 113 hospitalized older patients enrolled in this study. Functional impairment is defined according to the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ). Patients who scored <9 could function independently daily, while those who scored ≥9 had problems in everyday functional activities. Data collected include sociodemographic characteristics, depressive symptoms, social support, and physical comorbidities, which were classified according to the eight anatomical systems of the human body. Results: The sample comprised 75% female participants with a mean age of 63.74 ± 7.42 years old. A total of 33.6% had a functional impairment, while cognitive impairment was present in 63.7%. Independent participants had better urinary system and respiratory system health (P < 0.05). After adjusting for the potential confounders of age, disease course, physical comorbidities, psychiatric symptoms, the ability to independently carry out daily activities, and cognitive function, we found that impaired everyday function is associated with poor cognition, depressive symptoms, first admission, psychiatric symptoms (especially positive symptoms), ADL, and respiratory and urinary system diseases. Conclusion: Everyday functional capacity is predicted by disease course, admission time, cognition, depressive symptoms, severity of psychosis, ability to carry out daily activities, and respiratory and urinary system health status. Urinary system diseases contribute significantly to the prediction of impaired function. Future studies should focus on health status, drug use, and everyday functional recovery in older patients with schizophrenia.

Asymptomatic hyperuricemia (AH) is an early stage of gout. Emerging evidence shows that the intestinal microbiota is related to gout. However, the relationship between AH and the intestinal microbiota is poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to explore the possible correlation between AH and intestinal flora. We compared the intestinal microbial communities of AH (45 cases) and healthy subjects (45 cases) by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and clustering analysis on the incorporated population. Intestinal-type clustering can be divided into two groups, and significant differences in the proportion of AH are found among different bowel types. Alpha diversity indices were higher in the AH group than in the control group, and beta diversity indices also showed significant differences. A total of 19 genera were found different between the AH group and the control group. Compared with the control group, some probiotics are increased in the AH population. Two groups were ranked by importance of bacteria. We found the different bacteria partially coincided with the important bacteria, and the joint diagnosis level of the important bacteria was good. Conclusion: There were significant differences in the composition of intestinal biota between AH patients and healthy subjects. Some probiotics increased in AH.

Trimethylamine (TMA) is ubiquitous in the marine systems and may affect atmospheric chemistry as a precursor and strong stabilizer of atmospheric secondary aerosol, influencing cloud formation. Rapid and accurate measurement of the concentration of TMA in seawater is challenging due to their polarity, aqueous solubility, volatility and existence at low concentrations in marine environments. In this study, a dopant-assisted atmospheric pressure photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (DA-APPI-TOFMS) coupled with a dynamic purge-release method was developed for rapid and sensitive analysis of TMA in seawater. A novel three-zones ionization source has been developed for improving the ionization efficiency of analyte molecules and minimizing the influence of high-humidity of the sample gas, which allowed direct analysis of high-humidity (RH> 90%) gas samples from microbubble purging process by the mass spectrometer. At atmospheric pressure, the three-zones ionization source allows the use of high-speed purge gas to quickly purge all organic amines dissolved in the water into the gas phase, ensuring quantitative accuracy. The limit of quantification (LOQ) for TMA down to 0.1 µg L-1 was obtained in less than 2 min by consuming only 2 mL seawater sample. This method was applied for the determination of the concentrations of TMA in the coastal seawater to validate its practicability and reliability for analysis of trace amines in marine environments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) in the prognosis of patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). METHODS: The peripheral blood of 52 DLBCL patients and 30 healthy volunteers was collected. The CD14+HLA-DRlow/- was used as the immune marker for MDSC. The role of MDSC in the prognosis of DLBCL patients was analyzed by combination with the related clinicopathological data. RESULTS: The proportion of MDSC in peripheral blood of newly diagnosed DLBCL patients increased significantly (P<0.01). The expression of MDSC in DLBCL patients was related with clinical staging, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level and IPI score (P<0.01). There was no significant correlation with sex, age, and B symptoms. Univariate analysis showed that the clinical stage, serum LDH level, IPI score and MDSC level were the adverse factors affecting the overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis showed that IPI score and MDSC level were independent risk factors for OS in DLBCL patients. CONCLUSION: MDSC can be used as an important index to evaluate the prognosis of DLBCL patients, contributing to evaluate the immune and tumor microenvironment of DLBCL patients.

An in-source, helical membrane inlet single photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPI-TOFMS) has been developed to improve the detection sensitivity of trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water. A helical winding membrane and a four-stage differential pumping system of TOFMS was designed to improve and maintain the vapor pressure of analyte, which is linearly associated with the sensitivity of SPI. The helical winding increased the length of the hollow fiber membrane (HFM) from 7 cm to 100 cm and the pressure inside of SPI source was elevated from 3.6 Pa to 28 Pa, and then the sensitivity was increased by 16, 34.7, 32.3, 17.9 and 13.9 times for benzene, ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), aniline, p-xylene, and chlorobenzene (MCBz) respectively. The limits of quantitation (LOQs) of benzene, ETBE, aniline, p-xylene and MCBz were 0.014, 0.143, 0.556, 0.036, 0.025 µg L-1 respectively with a measurement time of 50 s, which were enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared to our previous work (reference [32]). The in-source design of helical winding membrane i.e. putting the membrane inside the SPI source dramatically reduced the response time to 1.33 min. This system has been evaluated for VOCs in sewage water of different laboratory buildings and automatic monitoring the pollutants in sewage water from a biological laboratory building. The automatic continuous analysis of organic pollutants in water has very important significance and broad application prospect for online assessment of water quality.

Small molecule metabolites are widely used as biomarkers in the research field of metabolomics for disease diagnosis and exposure assessment. As a readily available biofluid containing plenty of volatile organic metabolites (VOMs), urine is ideal for non-invasive metabolomic analysis; however, there is still lack of rapid analysis method for VOMs in urine. Here we report a kind of rapid method for urine analysis by employing high-pressure photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPPI-TOFMS) combined with dynamic purge-injection. Various types of metabolites, such as ketones, alcohols, acids, sulfides, pyrroles and amines were detected directly by simple acidification or alkalization of urines. It is noteworthy that nitrogen-containing compounds, especially polar amines, could be ultrasensitively measured without any derivatization. The analytical capability of the direct HPPI-MS technique was demonstrated by analyzing five valuable metabolites, i.e., toluene, 2,5-dimethylpyrrole, trimethlyamine, styrene, and p-xylene, which exhibited relatively low limits of detection, wide linear range and satisfactory repeatability. Being highly sensitive and humidity-friendly, the whole analytical procedure is easily operated in less than 6 min. Interestingly, a new biomarker 2,5-dimethylpyrrole was exclusively found in the smoker's urine sample besides toluene. The work presents a novel tool for rapid nontarget disease biomarkers screening or target monitoring of specific compounds through the investigation of volatile metabolites in urine.
