RESUMEN

Poor phonological development adversely affects language development and interpersonal communication abilities in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). However, the characteristics of phonological development in children with ASD who speak Putonghua (the official standard spoken form of modern Mandarin Chinese) remain largely unknown. This study aims to investigate phonological acquisition and development among Putonghua-speaking children with ASD. Data were collected from participants recruited in Shanghai, China. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment I, phonological acquisition was compared between 16 children with ASD aged 3-6 years and 16 age-matched typically developing (TD) children. In experiment II, phonological acquisition was compared between 26 children with ASD over 6 years old and 26 receptive-language-age-matched TD children. Picture naming was applied to measure participants' phonology - the 21 initials, 36 finals and four tones of Putonghua. Paired-samples t-tests and Fisher's exact tests were applied. In experiment I, scores on initials, finals, tones and total phonology of children with ASD aged 3-6 years were significantly lower than those of age-matched TD children. The pronunciation accuracy rates for initials such as/x, th, l/, finals such as/jaʊ, joʊ, wo/ and Tone 3 (the low-rising tone) in the ASD group were significantly lower than in the TD group. In experiment II, there was no significant difference in overall phonological developmental level between children with ASD over 6 years old and receptive-language-age-matched TD children. Phonological development of Putonghua-speaking children with ASD was significantly lower than that of age-matched TD children but closer to that of receptive-language-age-matched TD children. Further, participants with ASD showed atypical development sequences in both initials and finals.

Background: Temporal processing deficits regarding audiovisual cross-modal stimuli could affect children's speed and accuracy of decoding. Aim: To investigate the characteristics of audiovisual temporal sensitivity (ATS) in Chinese children, with and without developmental dyslexia and its impact on reading ability. Methods: The audiovisual simultaneity judgment and temporal order judgment tasks were performed to investigate the ATS of 106 Chinese children (53 with dyslexia) aged 8 to 12 and 37 adults without a history of dyslexia. The predictive effect of children's audiovisual time binding window on their reading ability and the effects of extra cognitive processing in the temporal order judgment task on participants' ATS were also investigated. Outcomes and results: With increasing inter-stimulus intervals, the percentage of synchronous responses in adults declined more rapidly than in children. Adults and typically developing children had significantly narrower time binding windows than children with dyslexia. The size of visual stimuli preceding auditory stimuli time binding window had a marginally significant predictive effect on children's reading fluency. Compared with the simultaneity judgment task, the extra cognitive processing of the temporal order judgment task affected children's ATS. Conclusion and implications: The ATS of 8-12-year-old Chinese children is immature. Chinese children with dyslexia have lower ATS than their peers.

BACKGROUND: To explore the impact of empathy between Chinese doctors and patients on anxiety, self-efficacy, sleep and IL-6 levels in hospitalized asthmatic patients. METHODS: This study included 195 asthmatic patients and 30 respirologists in China. The Jefferson Empathy Scale (JSE) was used to measure the empathy level of doctors, and the consultation and relational empathy (CARE) scale was used to measure patients' perception of empathy between themselves and their doctors. Doctors were divided into three groups, according to JSE scores. Data about anxiety, self-efficacy, sleep and IL-6 were collected and compared between patients in different JSE groups at admission (T1) and 3 months later (T2). The correlation between JSE scores and CARE scores was analyzed. Pearson correlation analysis along with a structural equation model was applied to explore the relevance among anxiety, self-efficacy, sleep, inflammatory factors (IL-6) and patients' perception of empathy shown by their doctors. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the indices of patients in three groups at admission. For all patients, the changes of indicators were statistically different from T1 to T2. Three months later, patients in high empathy scoring group showed lower anxiety and IL-6, and higher self-efficacy and sleep quality. There was a positive correlation between JSE and CARE scores. Patients' perception of doctor-patient empathy was negatively correlated to anxiety levels and IL-6, and positively correlated to self-efficacy and sleep quality. Anxiety, self-efficacy and sleep quality were mediators in the relationship between patients' perception of empathy and IL-6. CONCLUSION: In the Chinese sample, anxiety, self-efficacy, sleep, empathy between doctors and patients and IL-6 are closely correlated. Anxiety, self-efficacy and sleep may play additional roles in the influence of patients' perception of empathy between doctors and patients on IL-6 in asthmatic patients.

PURPOSE: To test the psychometric properties of a newly developed Mandarin Clinical Evaluation of Language for Preschooler's Core Scale (MCELP-CS). METHODS: Data were collected from 379 preschool-aged participants, including 81 children with language disorders associated with clinical conditions. The 155-item MCELP-CS consists of five subscales: vocabulary comprehension (VC), sentence comprehension (SC), vocabulary naming (VN), sentence structure imitation (SSI), and story narration (SN). The scale was used to measure the receptive and expressive language abilities of children aged 3-5 years and 11 months. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-revised (PPVT-R) was used to measure the receptive vocabulary abilities among the children (n = 338). The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, structural validity, convergent validity, and diagnostic accuracy were used to evaluate the scale. Differences between age groups were also examined using analysis of variance. RESULTS: The MCELP-CS had high internal consistency and good test-retest reliability. Fitting indices of the two-factor model from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), including χ2, CFI, TLI, RSEAM, and SRMR, suggested that the model is consistent with the theoretical structure. Significant correlations between the MCELP-CS and PPVT-R showed a high convergent validity. In addition, the scale indicated good diagnostic accuracy in differentiating the language disorders of children with autism, cerebral palsy (CP), and hearing impairment (HI). CONCLUSIONS: The MCELP-CS is a reliable and valid diagnostic tool for language disorders of Mandarin-speaking preschool children with autism, CP, and HI. It is appropriate to collect normative data for the MCELP-CS with a large sample population of preschool children.
