BACKGROUND AIMS: Studies have shown that blocking the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway may lead to a potential cure for HBV infections. ASC22 (Envafolimab) is a humanized, single-domain PD-L1 antibody administered subcutaneously. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ASC22 in virally suppressed chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients on nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs). APPROACH AND RESULTS: This randomized, single-blind, phase IIb trial enrolled CHB patients in two cohorts for a 24-week treatment with ASC22 or placebo (PBO) once every 2 weeks and 24-week follow-up. In total, 60, 59, and 30 patients were treated with 1.0, 2.5 mg/kg ASC22 and PBO, respectively. The mean HBsAg changes from baseline at week 24 and 24 week follow-up periods were -0.309 (p<0.001) and -0.272 (p<0.023) log10 IU/mL in the 1.0 mg/kg ASC22 group, -0.231 (p=0.007) and -0.205 (p=0.12) log10 IU/mL in the 2.5 mg/kg ASC22 group, and-0.003 and -0.063 log10 IU/mL in the PBO group, respectively (ITT population). Three out of ten patients with baseline HBsAg levels ≤100 IU/mL in the 1.0 mg/kg group obtained on-treatment HBsAg loss. Most AEs were mild (97.9%). There were no study drug-related serious AEs in the 1.0 mg/kg ASC22 group. CONCLUSIONS: Subcutaneous administration of 1.0 mg/kg ASC22 Q2W for 24 weeks was shown to be safe and well tolerated in virally suppressed CHB patients on NAs and can induce HBsAg decline, especially in patients with HBsAg ≤100 IU/mL.

DNA nanostructures offer a versatile platform for precise dye assembly, making them promising templates for creating photonic complexes with applications in photonics and bioimaging. However, despite these advancements, the effect of dye loading on the hybridization kinetics of single-stranded DNA protruding from DNA nanostructures remains unexplored. In this study, the DNA points accumulation for imaging in the nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT) technique is employed to investigate the accessibility of functional binding sites on DNA-templated excitonic wires. The results indicate that positively charged dyes on DNA frameworks can accelerate the hybridization kinetics of protruded ssDNA through long-range electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the impacts of various charged dyes and binding sites are explored on diverse DNA frameworks with varying cross-sizes. The research underscores the crucial role of electrostatic interactions in DNA hybridization kinetics within DNA-dye complexes, offering valuable insights for the functionalization and assembly of biomimetic photonic systems.

In this work, we developed two kinds of co-crystal assemblies systems, consisting of discrete mononuclear Yb3+ and Er3+ and mononuclear Yb3+ and Pr3+, which can achieve Er3+ and Pr3+ upconversion luminescence, respectively, by Yb3+ sensitization under 980 nm excitation. The structure and composition of two co-crystal assemblies were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. By investigation of the series of two assemblies, respectively, it is found that the strongest upconversion luminescence is both obtained when the molar ratio of Yb3+ and Ln3+ (Ln=Er or Pr) is 1 : 1. The energy transfer mechanism of Er3+ assemblies is determined as energy transfer upconversion, while that of Pr3+ assemblies is determined as energy transfer upconversion and cooperative sensitization upconversion. This is the first example of Pr3+ upconversion luminescence at the molecular dimension at room temperature, which enriches the research in the field of upconversion luminescence with lanthanide complexes.

AIM: The paradoxical protective association between overweight/obesity and diabetic microvascular complications (DMC), a phenomenon well-known as the obesity paradox, has been considered a non-causal association based on methodological influences. We aimed to investigate the association of generalized and abdominal obesity, as measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), respectively, with DMC in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), using a causal inference approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 1436 patients with clinically diagnosed T2D but not DMC at baseline in a community-based prospective cohort in China between 2017 and 2019 and followed them annually until 2022 with new-onset DMC recorded. Marginal structural Cox models with inverse probability weighting were constructed to determine the causal association. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify potential effect modifiers. RESULTS: We observed 360 incident DMC cases, including 109 cases of diabetic nephropathy (DN) and 277 cases of diabetic retinopathy (DR) during four follow-up visits. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for overall DMC, DN and DR were 1.037 (1.005-1.071), 1.117 (1.062-1.175) and 1.018 (0.980-1.059) for 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI, and 1.005 (0.994-1.017), 1.034 (1.018-1.051) and 1.000 (0.987-1.014) for 1 cm increase in WC, respectively. Similar patterns were observed across the BMI and WC categories, while the positive association appeared to be more pronounced in women. CONCLUSIONS: Generalized but not abdominal obesity was associated with an increased risk for the overall DMC, whereas both obesities were causally related to DN, albeit not DR, in T2D. Routine weight management should not be neglected in diabetes care, particularly in women.

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is a promising strategy for those with peripheral artery disease. Macrophage-centered inflammation is intended to govern the deficiency of the angiogenic response after hindlimb ischemia. However, little is known about the mechanism of macrophage activation beyond signals from cytokines and chemokines. We sought to identify a novel mechanical signal from the ischemic microenvironment that provokes macrophages and the subsequent inflammatory cascade and to investigate the potential role of Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channels (Piezo) on macrophages during this process. METHODS: Myeloid cell-specific Piezo1 (Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1) knockout (Piezo1ΔMΦ) mice were generated by crossing Piezo1fl/fl (LysM-Cre-/-; Piezo1 flox/flox) mice with LysM-Cre transgenic mice to assess the roles of Piezo1 in macrophages after hindlimb ischemia. Furthermore, in vitro studies were carried out in bone marrow-derived macrophages to decipher the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: We found that tissue stiffness gradually increased after hindlimb ischemia, as indicated by Young's modulus. Compared to Piezo2, Piezo1 expression and activation were markedly upregulated in macrophages from ischemic tissues in concurrence with increased tissue stiffness. Piezo1ΔMΦ mice exhibited improved perfusion recovery by enhancing angiogenesis. Matrigel tube formation assays revealed that Piezo1 deletion promoted angiogenesis by enhancing FGF2 (fibroblast growth factor-2) paracrine signaling in macrophages. Conversely, activation of Piezo1 by increased stiffness or the agonist Yoda1 led to reduced FGF2 production in bone marrow-derived macrophages, which could be blocked by Piezo1 silencing. Mechanistically, Piezo1 mediated extracellular Ca2+ influx and activated Ca2+-dependent CaMKII (calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II)/ETS1 (ETS proto-oncogene 1) signaling, leading to transcriptional inactivation of FGF2. CONCLUSIONS: This study uncovers a crucial role of microenvironmental stiffness in exacerbating the macrophage-dependent deficient angiogenic response. Deletion of macrophage Piezo1 promotes perfusion recovery after hindlimb ischemia through CaMKII/ETS1-mediated transcriptional activation of FGF2. This provides a promising therapeutic strategy to enhance angiogenesis in ischemic diseases.

Background: Adherence to a medication regimen is defined as taking the medication as directed by the prescriber. Adherence is critical to achieve the desired therapeutic outcomes. Medication adherence has not been examined in large outpatient populations since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A novel outpatient value-based pharmacy system (VPS) was used to collect adherence data from a large, outpatient population. The aim of this descriptive study was to analyze the reasons, medication classes, and diagnoses associated with nonadherence. Materials and Methods: Telepharmacist-documented adherence data from a large (n = 6,479) outpatient population that received remote consultation during the COVID-19 pandemic (August 1, 2020-November 28, 2022) were considered for this study. The adherence data were compiled within the VPS. Results: The overall rate of patients reporting at least one incident of nonadherence to their medication regimens was 21.5%. Medications used to treat hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia were least adhered to. Statins, beta-2 agonists, and corticosteroids were least adhered to. The most common reasons for nonadherence included knowledge gaps regarding therapy, forgetfulness, and side effects. Discussion: This represents the first descriptive analyses of adherence metrics in a large outpatient population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Polypharmacy, prevalence of diagnosis, and medication side effect profile may have contributed to the results observed. This study demonstrates the ability of a VPS to document key data to better inform the health care team. Elucidating adherence metrics in such populations may allow pharmacists and prescribers to identify subpopulations that require further education and management.

Background: With advances in technology, teledermatology (TD) research has increased. However, an updated comprehensive quantitative analysis of TD research, especially one that identifies emerging trends of TD research in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era, is lacking. Objective: To conduct a scientometric analysis of TD research documents between 2002 and 2021 and explore the emerging trends. Methods: CiteSpace was used to perform scientometric analysis and yielded visualized network maps with corresponding metric values. Emerging trends were identified mainly through burst detection of keywords/terms, co-cited reference clustering analysis, and structural variability analysis (SVA). Results: A total of 932 documents, containing 27,958 cited references were identified from 2002 to 2021. Most TD research was published in journals from the "Dermatology" and "Health Care Sciences & Services" categories. American, Australian, and European researchers contributed the most research and formed close collaborations. Keywords/terms with strong burst values to date were "primary care," "historical perspective," "emerging technique," "improve access," "mobile teledermoscopy (TDS)," "access," "skin cancer," "telehealth," "recent finding," "artificial intelligence (AI)," "dermatological care," and "dermatological condition." Co-cited reference clustering analysis showed that the recently active cluster labels included "COVID-19 pandemic," "skin cancer," "deep neural network," and "underserved population." The SVA identified two reviews (Tognetti et al. and Mckoy et al.) that may be highly cited in the future. Conclusion: During and after the COVID-19 era, emerging trends in research on TD (especially mobile TDS) may be related to skin cancer and AI as well as further exploration of primary care in underserved areas.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that individual lifestyles were associated with migraine. Yet, few studies focused on combined lifestyles, particularly in Chinese populations. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationships of a combined lifestyle index with migraine in Hong Kong Chinese women. METHODS: Baseline data from a cohort study named Migraine Exposures and Cardiovascular Health in Hong Kong Chinese Women (MECH-HK) were used for analysis. In total 3510 women aged 55.2 ± 9.1 years were included. The combined lifestyle index comprised eight lifestyle factors: smoking, physical activity, sleep, stress, fatigue, diet, body mass index, and alcohol. Each component was attributed a point of 0 (unhealthy) or 1 (healthy). The overall index was the sum of these points, ranging from 0 (the least healthy) to 8 points (the healthiest). Migraine was diagnosed by the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition. Additionally, for women with migraine, the data on migraine attack frequency (attacks/month) was collected. RESULTS: A total of 357 women with migraine (10.2%) were identified. The prevalence of migraine for the 0-3-point, 4-point, 5-point, 6-point, and 7-8-point groups were 18.0% (162/899), 10.9% (86/788), 6.6% (51/776), 6.0% (38/636), and 4.9% (20/411), respectively. In the most-adjusted model, compared to the 0-3-point group, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the 4-point, 5-point, 6-point, and 7-8-point groups were 0.57 (0.43-0.75), 0.33 (0.24-0.46), 0.30 (0.21-0.44), and 0.25 (0.15-0.41), respectively (all p < 0.001). For each component, migraine was significantly associated with sleep, stress, fatigue, and diet; but was unrelated to smoking, physical activity, body mass index, and alcohol. Among women with migraine, per point increase in the combined lifestyle index was associated with a reduced migraine attack frequency (ß = - 0.55; 95% confidence interval = - 0.82, - 0.28; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A combined lifestyle index was inversely associated with migraine and migraine attack frequency in Hong Kong Chinese women. Adhering to a healthy lifestyle pattern might be beneficial to the prevention of migraine attacks. Conversely, it is also plausible that women with migraine might have a less healthy lifestyle pattern compared to those without headaches.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the safety of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine in Chinese pregnant women and their fetuses when inoculated during the peri-pregnancy period. METHODS: Eligible pregnant women were prospectively collected and divided into a vaccine group (n = 93) and control group (n = 160) according to whether they had been vaccinated against COVID-19 within 3 months before their last menstruation period (LMP) and after pregnancy. Demographic data of couples, complications during pregnancy and delivery of pregnant women, and data of newborns at birth were collected. RESULTS: Sixty-six women were vaccinated with a median time of 35.5 (range = 0-91) days before LMP, and 27 women were vaccinated with a median time of 17 (range = 1-72) days after LMP. The incidence of premature rupture of membrane (PROM) in the vaccine group was significantly higher than that in the control group (16.13% vs. 6.88%, p = 0.019). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that maternal peri-pregnancy COVID-19 vaccination was not an independent risk factor for PROM (odds ratio: 2.407, 95% confidence interval: 0.932-6.216, p = 0.069). There was no difference in the incidence of other complications during pregnancy and delivery between the two groups. A total of 253 neonates were delivered, including two cases with congenital abnormalities in each group. The incidence of congenital abnormalities between the two groups was similar (2.15% vs. 1.25%, p = 0.626). There was no difference in neonatal length, weight, head circumference, and Apgar score between the two groups (p > 0.05), but the incidence of neonatal jaundice in the vaccine group was significantly higher than that in the control group (20.43% vs. 7.5%, p = 0.002). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that maternal peri-pregnancy vaccination, postpartum blood loss, cesarean section, 1-min Apgar score, and paternal smoking were independent risk factors for neonatal jaundice. CONCLUSIONS: It is safe for pregnant women and their fetuses to be inoculated the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine during the peri-pregnancy period, but attention should be paid to neonatal jaundice.

We present a manhole localization method based on distributed fiber optic sensing and weakly supervised machine learning techniques. For the first time to our knowledge, ambient environment data is used for underground cable mapping with the promise of enhancing operational efficiency and reducing field work. To effectively accommodate the weak informativeness of ambient data, a selective data sampling scheme and an attention-based deep multiple instance classification model are adopted, which only requires weakly annotated data. The proposed approach is validated on field data collected by a fiber sensing system over multiple existing fiber networks.

Background: The Serum creatinine/cystatin C ratio (Cr/CysC ratio) is an emerging alternative index for muscle mass loss, a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the association between the Cr/CysC ratio and CVD morbidity and mortality remains unknown. Methods: A total of 11,150 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were employed to assess the association between the Cr/CysC ratio and self-reported CVD morbidity. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the Cr/CysC ratio for CVD mortality. Results: At baseline, 1181 (7.90%) participants had self-reported CVDs. Lower Cr/CysC ratios were found in participants with CVDs (1.18 ± 0.30 vs. 1.05 ± 0.23, p < 0.001). In the multivariable logistic regression model, the Cr/CysC ratio was inversely linked to CVD morbidity (odds ratio: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.52-0.81, p < 0.001, per standard deviation [SD] increase). 997 (8.94%) CVD deaths were documented during a median follow-up of 16.9 years. A higher Cr/CysC ratio was associated with a decreasing risk of CVD mortality (adjusted HR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.46-0.65, p < 0.001, per SD increase). Conclusions: In NHANES participants, the Cr/CysC ratio had an inverse correlation with CVD morbidity and mortality.

Background: Mitral regurgitation (MR) has a high prevalence and aggravates hypoperfusion and hypoxia in heart failure (HF). Renal tubular epithelial cells are sensitive to hypoxia, and therefore tubulointerstitial damage is quite common in HF. However, the correlation between tubular dysfunction and MR has not been studied. The aim of this work was to evaluate the prognostic significance of urinary N-acetyl- ß -d-glucosaminidase (uNAG), a biomarker of renal tubular damage, in patients with HF and MR. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of 390 patients (mean age 64 years; 65.6% male) with uNAG measurement on admission (expressed as urinary NAG/urinary creatinine) and at least 1 year of follow-up data. The pre-defined primary endpoint was the composite of all-cause mortality or rehospitalization for HF after discharge. Cox regression analysis, restricted cubic splines, and subgroup analysis were used to investigate the prognostic value of uNAG modeled as a categorical (quartiles) or continuous (per SD increase) variable. Results: A total of 153 (39.23%) patients reached the composite endpoint over a median follow-up time of 1.2 years. The uNAG level correlated with the severity of HF and with the incidence of adverse events. In a multivariable Cox regression model, each SD (13.80 U/g ⋅ Cr) of increased uNAG was associated with a 17% higher risk of death or HF rehospitalization (95% confidence interval, 2-33%, p = 0.022), and a 19% higher risk of HF rehospitalization (p = 0.027). Subgroup analysis revealed the associations between uNAG and poor prognosis were only significant in younger patients ( ≤ 65 years) and in patients without obvious cardiovascular comorbidities. Conclusions: uNAG levels at admission were associated with the risk of adverse outcomes in patients with HF and MR. Additional studies are needed to further investigate the heart-kidney interaction.

Amikacin is a widely used antibiotic in the treatment of Gram-negative bacteria, but high concentrations of amikacin can cause cochlear nerve damage. Therefore, accurate and quick detection of the concentration of amikacin is desired and important. In this work, we have synthesized a new gallium-organic framework {[(CH3)2(NH2)Ga(PPTA)]·0.5DMF}n (1) (H4PPTA = 4,4',4″,4″'-(1-4-phenlene-bis(pyridine-4,2,6-triyl)) with good solvent and pH stabilities. A structure analysis reveals that 1 is a twofold interpenetrated framework exhibiting a large 1D square aperture with a size of 10.8 Å × 14 Å. The experimental results show that 1 can be used as a stable, fast, and recyclable luminescent probe for the detection of amikacin in aqueous solution and serum. The limit of detection is 2.9 × 10-7 mol/L, which is lower than the harmful concentration of amikacin in human serum. This is the first example of a metal-organic framework used for luminescence sensing of amikacin.

A metal-free and efficient approach for the synthesis of structurally important nicotinates through 4-HO-TEMPO-mediated [3 + 3] annulation of cyclopropanols with ß-enamine esters is presented. This protocol features high atom efficiency, green waste, simple operation and broad substrate scope. Moreover, the experiments of gram-scale synthesis and recovery of oxidants make this strategy more sustainable and practical.

The mechanism of Sn and Nb influence on the fraction of tetragonal ZrO2 in oxide films on Zr alloys and their influence mechanism on corrosion resistance of Zr alloys, despite decades of research, are ambiguous due to the lack of kinetic knowledge of phase evolution of ZrO2 with doping. Using stochastic surface walking and density functional theory calculations, we investigate the influence of Nb and Sn on the stability of tetragonal (t) and monoclinic (m) ZrO2, and t-m phase transition in oxide films. We found that though Nb and Sn result in similar apparent variation trends in the t-phase fraction in oxide films, their influences on t-m phase transition differ significantly, which is the underlying origin of different influences of the t-phase fraction in oxide films on the corrosion resistance of Zr alloys with Sn and Nb alloying. These results clarify an important aspect of the relationship between the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Zr alloys.

BACKGROUND: Testicular hypoplasia can affect the sexual and reproductive ability in adulthood, and even increase the risk of cancer. Abnormal development of the gubernaculum is one of the important factors of testicular hypoplasia. Therefore, a study of the structure and function of the gubernaculum is an important but neglected new breakthrough point for investigating the normal/abnormal development of the testis. Previous findings showed that Insulin like factor 3 (INSL3) is a key factor regulating the growth of gubernaculum, however, the mechanism by which INSL3 acts on the gubernaculum remains unknown. Therefore, we probed the mechanism associated with INSL3-induced the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of gubernacular cells in mice. METHODS: A culture cell model of neonatal mice gubernaculum is established by INSL3 intervention. We blocked PLC/PKC signaling pathway with U73122 pretreat to investigate the role of the PLC/PKC signaling pathway. The changes of cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis were detected by molecular biological methods. In addition, the levels of PCNA and F-action were detected by immunofluorescence and western blotting. RESULTS: We found that INSL3 can promote the proliferation and migration of gubernacular cells and inhibit their apoptosis, meanwhile, INSL3 significantly up-regulated PLC/PKC protein phosphorylation. However, treatment with the PLC/PKC signaling pathway inhibitor U73122 significantly inhibited these effects of INSL3. Besides, we found that INSL3 could up-regulate the protein expression level of PCNA and F-actin, while the PCNA and F-actin expression was significantly weakened after U73122 pretreatment. CONCLUSIONS: This research revealed that INSL3 binding to RXFP2 may up-regulate the expression levels of PCNA and F-actin by activating the PLC/PKC signaling pathway to promote the proliferation and migration of gubernacular cells. It suggests that the RXFP2-PLC/PKC axis may serve as a novel molecular mechanism by which INSL3 regulates growth of the gubernaculum.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to: (1) investigate the prevalence, differences and changes in sleep quality over time among Chinese couples during pregnancy and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum and (2) examine the association between sleep quality and depressive symptoms. METHOD: This study was part of an intervention study for postnatal depression. Childbearing couples were recruited from antenatal clinics. Data on sleep and depression during pregnancy and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, respectively. RESULTS: The prevalence of sleep disturbance (PSQI score > 5) during pregnancy and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum was 45.0%, 62.8% and 36.8%, respectively, among women and 26.4%, 36.4% and 27.3%, respectively, among men. Sleep quality declined significantly in both partners from pregnancy to 6 weeks postpartum, followed by a significant improvement by 6 months postpartum. The results revealed significant correlations between partners' scores on sleep quality across the perinatal period, with women experiencing poorer sleep quality than men. Poor sleep was associated with depressive symptoms across the perinatal period for both partners. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of screening couples for sleep disturbances throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period and assisting them to develop strategies to improve sleep quality during the transition to parenthood.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality due to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum is a global challenge. Particularly, in low-and lower-income countries, the outcomes of these complications are quite substantial. In recent years, studies exploring the effect of mobile health on the improvement of maternal health are increasing. However, the effect of this intervention on the improvement of institutional delivery and postnatal care utilization was not well analyzed systematically, particularly in low and lower-middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this review was to assess the effect of mobile heath (mHealth) interventions on improving institutional delivery, postnatal care service uptake, knowledge of obstetric danger signs, and exclusive breastfeeding among women of low and lower-middle-income countries. METHODS: Common electronic databases like PubMed, EMBASE, the Web of Science, Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane library, Google scholar, and gray literature search engines like Google were used to search relevant articles. Articles that used interventional study designs and were conducted in low and lower-middle-income countries were included. Sixteen articles were included in the final systematic review and meta-analysis. Cochrane's risk of bias tool was used to assess the quality of included articles. RESULTS: The overall outcome of the systematic review and meta-analysis showed that MHealth intervention has a positive significant effect in improving the institutional delivery (OR = 2.21 (95%CI: 1.69-2.89), postnatal care utilization (OR = 4.13 (95%CI: 1.90-8.97), and exclusive breastfeeding (OR = 2.25, (95%CI: 1.46-3.46). The intervention has also shown a positive effect in increasing the knowledge of obstetric danger signs. The subgroup analysis based on the intervention characteristics showed that there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups based on the intervention characteristics for institutional delivery (P = 0.18) and postnatal care utilizations (P = 0.73). CONCLUSIONS: The study has found out that mHealth intervention has a significant effect on improving facility delivery, postnatal care utilization, rate of exclusive breastfeeding, and knowledge of danger signs. There were also findings that reported contrary to the overall outcome which necessitates conducting further studies to enhance the generalizability of the effect of mHealth interventions on these outcomes.

The main objective of this study was to assess the in vitro antibacterial effectiveness of Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil (OGEO) against Shewanella putrefaciens. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of OGEO acting on S. putrefaciens were both 0.1% and OGEO could inhibit the growth of S. putrefaciens in a dose-dependent manner. The restraint of the biofilm growth of S. putrefaciens was found in the crystal violet attachment assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The disruption of cell membranes and exudation of contents in S. putrefaciens with OGEO treatment were observed by scanning electron microscopy, hemolysis and ATPase activity. The results demonstrated that OGEO had a positive inhibitory effect on the growth of S. putrefaciens, which primarily developed its antibacterial function against S. putrefaciens by disrupting the formation of biofilms and cell membranes. This study could provide a new method of inhibiting the spoilage of food in which the dominant spoilage bacteria are S. putrefaciens.

BACKGROUND: Parent-infant bonding plays a significant role in promoting the psychosocial well-being of the child. This study aimed to examine the relationships between family sense of coherence, marital satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and parent-infant bonding among Chinese parents at 6 weeks postpartum. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted of an intervention study for postnatal depression. The participants were Chinese parents recruited from public hospitals. Family sense of coherence, marital satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and parent-infant bonding were measured using the Family Sense of Coherence Scale, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire, respectively. Path analysis was performed on data collected from the control group (n = 211) at 6 weeks postpartum. RESULTS: Less impairment of mother-infant bonding at 6 weeks postpartum was found among mothers who had a stronger family sense of coherence and lower levels of depressive symptoms. Less impairment of father-infant bonding at 6 weeks postpartum was found among fathers who had greater marital satisfaction and family sense of coherence and fewer depressive symptoms. The mothers' levels of family sense of coherence, marital satisfaction, and parent-infant bonding were closely related to those of their partners. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of developing culturally appropriate interventions that focus on strengthening family sense of coherence, enhancing marital satisfaction, and reducing depressive symptoms in both parents to promote the quality of parent-infant bonding at early postpartum.
