RESUMEN

Seamless integration of microstructures and circuits on three-dimensional (3D) complex surfaces is of significance and is catalyzing the emergence of many innovative 3D curvy electronic devices. However, patterning fine features on arbitrary 3D targets remains challenging. Here, we propose a facile charge-driven electrohydrodynamic 3D microprinting technique that allows micron- and even submicron-scale patterning of functional inks on a couple of 3D-shaped dielectrics via an atmospheric-pressure cold plasma jet. Relying on the transient charging of exposed sites arising from the weakly ionized gas jet, the specified charge is programmably deposited onto the surface as a virtual electrode with spatial and time spans of ~mm in diameter and ~µs in duration to generate a localized electric field accordantly. Therefore, inks with a wide range of viscosities can be directly drawn out from micro-orifices and deposited on both two-dimensional (2D) planar and 3D curved surfaces with a curvature radius down to ~1 mm and even on the inner wall of narrow cavities via localized electrostatic attraction, exhibiting a printing resolution of ~450 nm. In addition, several conformal electronic devices were successfully printed on 3D dielectric objects. Self-aligned 3D microprinting, with stacking layers up to 1400, is also achieved due to the electrified surfaces. This microplasma-induced printing technique exhibits great advantages such as ultrahigh resolution, excellent compatibility of inks and substrates, antigravity droplet dispersion, and omnidirectional printing on 3D freeform surfaces. It could provide a promising solution for intimately fabricating electronic devices on arbitrary 3D surfaces.

Electrohydrodynamic printing holds both ultrahigh-resolution fabrication capability and unmatched ink-viscosity compatibility yet fails on highly insulating thick/irregular substrates. Herein, we proposed a single-potential driven electrohydrodynamic printing process with submicrometer resolution on arbitrary nonconductive targets, regardless of their geometric shape or sizes, via precoating with an ultrathin dielectric nanoparticle layer. Benefiting from the favorable Maxwell-Wagner polarization, the reversely polarized spot brought about a significant drop (∼57% for ceramics) in the operation voltage as its induced electric field and a negligible residual charge accumulation. Thus, ordered micro/nanostructures with line widths down to 300 nm were directly written at a stage speed as low as 5 mm/s, and silver features with width of ∼2 µm or interval of ∼4 µm were achieved on insulating substrates separately. Flexible sensors and curved heaters were then high-precision printed and demonstrated successfully, presenting this technique with huge potential for fabricating flexible/conformal electronics on arbitrary 3D structures.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS). While the relationship between smoking and the risk of cardiovascular diseases is established, the impact of changing smoking habits post-IS on the risk of subsequent MI remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the effects of alterations in smoking behavior following an IS diagnosis on the likelihood of experiencing an MI. METHODS: Utilizing data from the Korean National Health Insurance Services Database, this nationwide population-based cohort study included 199,051 participants diagnosed with IS between January 2010 and December 2016. Smoking status was categorized based on changes in smoking habits before and after IS diagnosis. The association between changes in smoking behavior and the risk of subsequent MI was analyzed using multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 4.17 person-years, a total of 5,734 (2.88%) patients were diagnosed with MI after IS. Smoking quitters (2.93%) or former smokers (2.47%) have a similar or lower rate of MI than the average, even if they have smoked cigarettes, while sustained smokers (3.46%) or new smokers (3.81%) have much higher rates of MI. Among sustained and new smokers, the risk of incident MI was significantly higher than never smokers (new smoker adjusted HR [aHR]: 1.496, 95% CI: 1.262-1.774; sustained smoker aHR: 1.494, 95% CI: 1.361-1.641). Also, among the study participants, approximately two-thirds continued smoking after their IS diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Changing smoking habits after an IS diagnosis significantly influences the risk of subsequent MI. Specifically, continuing or starting to smoke after an IS diagnosis is associated with a higher risk of MI. These results underscore the importance of targeted smoking cessation interventions for stroke patients to reduce the risk of subsequent MI.

Divergent synthesis of structurally different products from the same kinds of starting materials is highly synthetically useful but very challenging. Herein, we reported a base-mediated chemodivergent [4 + 1] and [2 + 1] cycloaddition of N-alkylpyridinium and enone under mild conditions, leading to furan-fused bicycles with high diastereoselectivity and spirobicycles, respectively, from moderate to high yields. N-Alkylpyridinium salts were modular nucleophilic transfer reagents and C1 synthons, which underwent tandem Michael addition to the α,ß-unsaturated ketones and cyclization under the base conditions. Late-stage derivatization of 4-propyldicyclohexylanone from an important industrial raw of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens was realized. In vitro, compound 3f exhibited good activities against human colon cancer cells (HCT116) with IC50 values in 9.82 ± 0.27 µM. Further biological evaluations investigated the mechanism of the effective inhibition of cell growth, including apoptosis ratio detection, cell cycle analysis, and migration capacity of HCT116 cells. In apoptosis effect studies, complex 3f increased the percentage of apoptotic HCT116 cells to 26.8% (15 µM).

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to systematically summarize the application of organoids in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. It aims to shed light on the current advancements and future potential of organoid technology in these areas, particularly in addressing challenges like hearing loss, cancer research, and organ regeneration. METHODS: Review of current literature regrading organoids in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. RESULTS: The review highlights several advancements in the field. In otology, the development of organoid replacement therapies offers new avenues for treating hearing loss. In nasal science, the creation of specific organoid models aids in studying nasopharyngeal carcinoma and respiratory viruses. In head and neck surgery, innovative approaches for squamous cell carcinoma prediction and thyroid regeneration using organoids have been developed. CONCLUSION: Organoid research in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery is still at an early stage. This review underscores the potential of this technology in advancing our understanding and treatment of various conditions, predicting a transformative impact on future medical practices in these fields.

The microbial terroir is an indispensable part of the terroir panorama, and can improve wine quality with special characteristics. In this study, eight autochthonous yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), selected in Huailai country, China, were trailed in small-scale and pilot fermentations for both white (Riesling and Sémillon) and red (Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah) wines and evaluated by GC-MS analysis and the rate-all-that-apply (RATA) method. Compared to commercial yeast strains, the indigenous yeasts were able to produce higher concentrations of ethyl esters and fatty acid ethyl esters, and higher alcohol, resulting in higher odor activity values of fruity, floral attributes. Marked varietal effects were observed in the pilot fermentation, but yeast strains exerted a noticeable impact in modulating wine aroma and sensory profile. Overall, indigenous yeast could produce more preferred aroma compounds and sensory characteristics for both white and red wines, demonstrating the potential for improving wine quality and regional characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the diagnostic efficiency among the clinical model, the radiomics model and the nomogram that combined radiomics features, frozen section (FS) analysis and clinical characteristics for the prediction of lymph node (LN) metastasis in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). METHODS: A total of 208 patients were randomly divided into two groups randomly with a proportion of 7:3 for the training groups (n = 146) and the validation groups (n = 62). The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used for the selection of radiomics features extracted from ultrasound (US) images. Univariate and multivariate logistic analyses were used to select predictors associated with the status of LN. The clinical model, radiomics model and nomogram were subsequently established by logistic regression machine learning. The area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity were used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the different models. The Delong test was used to compare the AUC of the three models. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis indicated that age, size group, Adler grade, ACR score and the psammoma body group were independent predictors of lymph node metastasis (LNM). The results showed that in both the training and validation groups, the nomogram showed better performance than the clinical model, albeit not statistically significant (p > .05), and significantly outperformed the radiomics model (p < .05). However, the nomogram exhibits a slight improvement in sensitivity that could reduce the incidence of false negatives. CONCLUSION: We propose that the nomogram holds substantial promise as an effective tool for predicting LNM in patients with PTC.

Luminol and its derivatives are extensively used as chemiluminogenic substrates in bioimaging and biochemical analysis. Luminol reagents can typically emit blue chemiluminescence (CL), whose wavelength is normally outside the most sensitive detection range of human naked eyes and most CL analyzers with silicon-based charge-coupled device (CCD) detectors. Development of luminol analogues with longer wavelength emission is thus attractive. Herein, four new phthalhydrazide CL probes (GL-1/2/3/4) have been prepared through the derivatization of luminol. The most promising one, 5-(4-hydroxy-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)-2,3-dihydrophthalazine-1,4-dione (GL-1), emits bright green CL upon oxidation and shows enhanced CL performance compared to its parent luminol. Bloodstain imaging, horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-based immunoassay, and the analysis of glucose/glucose oxidase reaction have been performed using the GL-1 reagent. These results indicate that GL-1 is a new chemiluminogenic luminol analogue with great potential in real analytical applications and will be an alternative to replace luminol in practical CL analysis.

Stretchable wearable thermoelectric (TE) generators (WTEGs) without compromising output performance for real wearables have attracted much attention recently. Herein, a 3D thermoelectric generator with biaxial stretchability is constructed on the device level. Ultraflexible inorganic Ag/Ag2 Se strips are sewn into the soft purl-knit fabric, in which the thermoelectric legs are aligned in the direction of vertical heat flux. A stable and sufficient temperature gradient of 5.2 °C across the WTEG is therefore achieved when contacted with the wrist at a room temperature of 26.3 °C. The prepared TEG generates a high power density of 10.02 W m-2 at a vertical temperature gradient of 40 K. Meanwhile, the reliable energy harvesting promises a variation of less than 10% under the biaxial stretching up to 70% strain via leveraging the combined effects of the stretchability of knit fabric and geometry of TE strips. The knit fabric-supported TEG enables a seamless conformation to the skin as well as efficient body heat harvesting, which can provide sustainable energy to low power consumption wearable electronics.

Flexible pressure sensors play an increasingly important role in a wide range of applications such as human health monitoring, soft robotics, and human-machine interfaces. To achieve a high sensitivity, a conventional approach is introducing microstructures to engineer the internal geometry of the sensor. However, this microengineering strategy requires the sensor's thickness to be typically at hundreds to thousands of microns level, impairing the sensor's conformability on surfaces with microscale roughness like human skin. In this manuscript, a nanoengineering strategy is pioneered that paves a path to resolve the conflicts between sensitivity and conformability. A dual-sacrificial-layer method is initiated that facilitates ease of fabrication and precise assembly of two functional nanomembranes to manufacture the thinnest resistive pressure sensor with a total thickness of ≈850 nm that achieves perfectly conformable contact to human skin. For the first time, the superior deformability of the nanothin electrode layer on a carbon nanotube conductive layer is utilized by the authors to achieve a superior sensitivity (92.11 kPa-1 ) and an ultralow detection limit (<0.8 Pa). This work offers a new strategy that is able to overcome a key bottleneck for current pressure sensors, therefore is of potential to inspire the research community for a new wave of breakthroughs.

RESUMEN

Multifunctional electronic skins (e-skins) that can sense various stimuli have demonstrated increasing potential in many fields. However, most e-skins are human-oriented that cannot work in hash environments such as high temperature, underwater, and corrosive chemicals, impairing their applications, especially in human-machine interfaces, intelligent machines, robotics, and so on. Inspired by the crack-shaped sensory organs of spiders, an environmentally robust and ultrasensitive multifunctional e-skin is developed. By developing a polyimide-based metal crack-localization strategy, the device has excellent environment adaptability since polyimide has high thermal stability and chemical durability. The localized cracked part serves as an ultrasensitive strain sensing unit, while the non-cracked serpentine part is solely responsible for temperature. Since the two units are made of the same material and process, the signals are decoupled easily. The proposed device is the first multifunctional e-skin that can be used in harsh environments, therefore is of great potential for both human and robot-oriented applications.

RESUMEN

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Since the start of the pandemic, olfactory dysfunction (OD) has been reported as a common symptom of COVID-19. In some asymptomatic carriers, OD is often the first and even the only symptom. At the same time, persistent OD is also a long-term sequela seen after COVID-19 that can have a serious impact on the quality of life of patients. However, the pathogenesis of post-COVID-19 OD is still unclear, and there is no specific treatment for its patients. The aim of this paper was to review the research on OD caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection and to summarize the mechanism of action, the pathogenesis, and current treatments.

Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and death worldwide. While various factors are established as causing malignant tumors, the mechanisms underlying cancer development remain poorly understood. Early diagnosis and the development of effective treatments for cancer are important research topics. Transfer RNA (tRNA), the most abundant class of RNA molecules in the human transcriptome, participates in both protein synthesis and cellular metabolic processes. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are produced by specific cleavage of pre-tRNA and mature tRNA molecules, which are highly conserved and occur widely in various organisms. tRFs were initially thought to be random products with no physiological function, but have been redefined as novel functional small non-coding RNA molecules that help to regulate RNA stability, modulate translation, and influence target gene expression, as well as other biological processes. There is increasing evidence supporting roles for tRFs in tumorigenesis and cancer development, including the regulation of tumor cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and drug resistance. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms by which tRFs impact these processes has potential to inform malignant tumor diagnosis and treatment. Further, tRFs are expected to become new biological markers for early diagnosis and prognosis prediction in patients with tumors, as well as a targets for precision cancer therapies. Malignant tumours area leading cause of death globally, accounting for approximately 13% of all deaths. A detailed understanding of the mechanism(s) of the occurrence and development of malignant tumours and identification of relevant therapeutic targets are therefore key to tumour treatment. tsRNAs(tRNA-derived small RNAs)-also known as TRFs (tRNA-derived fragments), tiRNAs (tRNA-derived stress-induced RNAs), tRNA halves, etc.-are a recently identified class of small noncoding RNAs that are generated from mature tRNA or tRNA precursors through cleavage by enzymes such as angiogenin, Dicer, RNase Z, and RNase P. Several studies have confirmed that dysregulation of tsRNAs is closely related to the tumorigenesis of breast cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, lung cancer, and so on. Furthermore, research indicates that tsRNAs can be used as clinical diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for cancer. In our review, we summarized the recent research progress on the role and clinical application of tsRNAs in tumorigenesis and progression. Video Abstract.

Head and neck tumors (HNCs) are a common tumor in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery, accounting for 5% of all malignant tumors in the body and are the sixth most common malignant tumor worldwide. In the body, immune cells can recognize, kill, and remove HNCs. T cell-mediated antitumor immune activity is the most important antitumor response in the body. T cells have different effects on tumor cells, among which cytotoxic T cells and helper T cells play a major killing and regulating role. T cells recognize tumor cells, activate themselves, differentiate into effector cells, and activate other mechanisms to induce antitumor effects. In this review, the immune effects and antitumor mechanisms mediated by T cells are systematically described from the perspective of immunology, and the application of new immunotherapy methods related to T cells are discussed, with the objective of providing a theoretical basis for exploring and forming new antitumor treatment strategies. INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is a common complication after heart transplantation (HTPL), but few studies exist on dysphagia after HTPL, and the prevalence is unknown. The objective of our current study was to establish the prevalence and risk factors for dysphagia after HTPL and to classify its characteristics through Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS). METHODS: The recipients of HTPL carried out at a single center from January 2011 to November 2019 were assessed retrospectively. Dysphagia was evaluated by a bedside swallowing exam and VFSS to evaluate for evidence of aspiration. The duration of ventilator and preoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, intensive care unit, hospital stay, the progress of oral feeding after surgery, the presence of a tracheostomy, and vocal cord palsy were analyzed. On the third and seventh days following surgery, we looked at the relationship between risk factors and oral feeding progress, respectively. Additionally, we contrasted these risk variables with the no penetration/aspiration (PA) group and the PA group on VFSS. RESULTS: Among the study cohort of 421 patients, 222 (52.7%) patients had access to oral feeding on the third day of surgery. The number of patients who underwent VFSS due to clinically suspected dysphagia was 96 (22.8%). Of these, 54 (56.2%) had aspiration or penetration (PA group), while 42 (43.8%) had no abnormal findings (No-PA group). In the multivariable regression model, preoperative ECMO support, vocal cord abnormalities, tracheostomy, and emergent need for HTPL were identified as independent risk variables for oral feeding progress on postoperative days (PODs) 3 and 7. Among these factors, preoperative ECMO support had the highest odds ratio (OR) at PODs 3 (OR: 4.73, CI: 1.997, 11.203, p < .001) and 7 (OR: 5.143, CI: 2.294, 11.53, p < .001). CONCLUSION: We identified the prevalence and potential risk factors for postoperative dysphagia in this retrospective analysis of 421 heart transplant recipients. The pathophysiology of postoperative dysphagia was multifactorial, and it was more common than the incidence after general cardiothoracic surgery.

Phthalate monoesters (me-PAEs) have been used as biomarkers for assessing human exposure to phthalate esters (PAEs) for a long time, and studies on the sources and distribution of me-PAEs in the environment are limited. In this study, dust samples from microenvironments were collected to measure the occurrence of PAEs and me-PAEs, as well as the bacterial diversity. The results indicated that me-PAEs coexisted with PAEs in different microenvironmental dust samples, with concentrations of nine PAEs and 16 me-PAEs ranging from 108 to 1450 µg/g (median range) and 6.00 to 21.6 µg/g, respectively. The concentrations of several low molecular weight me-PAEs (e.g., monomethyl phthalate and monoethyl phthalate) in dust were even significantly higher than those of their parents. The bacteria in the dust were mainly predominant with Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes (total abundance >90%). Bacteria from bus and air conditioning dust samples had the highest species richness and species diversity. Seven genes of suspected enzymes with the ability to degrade PAEs were selected, and the concentration of me-PAEs increased with increasing abundance of enzyme function. Our findings will provide useful information on the profiles of me-PAEs and their potential sources in indoor dusts, which will benefit the accurate estimation of human exposure.

BACKGROUND: The disease burden attributable to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is significant worldwide. Some studies have linked exposure to air pollution to COPD, but there has been little research on this. METHODS: We aimed to assess the COPD-related disease burden attributable to air pollution from multiple epidemiological perspectives. This study conducted a three-stage analysis. Firstly, we reported on the burden of disease worldwide in 2019 by different subgroups including sex, age, region, and country. Secondly, we studied the trends in disease burden from 1990 to 2019. Finally, we explored the association of some national indicators with disease burden to look for risk factors. RESULTS: In 2019, the death number of COPD associated with air pollution accounted for 2.32% of the total global death, and the number of DALY accounted for 1.12% of the global DALY. From 1990 to 2019, the death number of COPD associated with air pollution increased peaked at 1.41 million in 1993, fluctuated, and then declined. We found the same temporal pattern of DALY. The corresponding age-standardized rates had been falling. At the same time, the burden of COPD associated with air pollution was also affected by some national indicators. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that air pollution-related COPD contributed to a significant global disease burden. We called for health policymakers to take action and interventions targeting vulnerable countries and susceptible populations.

tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) participate in several biological processes, including carcinogenesis. The correlations between tsRNAs and human cancers are attracting substantial attention. Nevertheless, the involvement of tsRNAs in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) progression remains unclear. We constructed tsRNAs expression profiles in LSCC and adjacent normal tissues by next-generation sequencing. Interestingly, we identified a specific 5'-tiRNA fragment (tRF-33-Q1Q89P9L842205) that was significantly downregulated and was closely associated with lymph node metastasis and advanced stages of LSCC. Importantly, we found that tRF-33-Q1Q89P9L842205 suppressed cell growth, proliferation, migration, invasion and induced apoptosis in LSCC by directly silencing phosphoinositide 3-kinase catalytic subunit (PIK3CD). We speculated that tRF-33-Q1Q89P9L842205 is a potential diagnostic biomarker for LSCC and acts as a tumor suppressor by directly targeting PIK3CD.

BACKGROUND: Sclerostin, a regulator of bone metabolism and vascular calcification involved in regulating the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, has been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, current results regarding the circulating sclerostin level of RA patients are debatable. This study aimed to evaluate the circulating level of sclerostin in RA patients and briefly summarize its role. METHOD: PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched till May 27, 2021, for eligible articles. Useful data from all qualified papers were systematically extracted and analyzed using Stata 12.0 software (Stata Corp LP, College Station, TX, USA). RESULTS: Overall, 13 qualifying studies including 1030 cases and 561 normal controls were analyzed in this updated meta-analysis. Forest plot of this meta-analysis showed that RA patients had higher circulating sclerostin levels (P < 0.001, standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.916, 95% CI: 0.235-1.597) compared to normal controls. Subgroup analyses implied that age, region, and assay method were associated with sclerostin level in RA patients. CONCLUSION: RA patients have higher circulating sclerostin levels, and these was influenced by age, region, and assay method.
