RESUMEN

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignant neoplasm with high rate of lymph node metastasis and recurrence. The aim of this study is to evaluate the expression profile of T Lymphoma Invasion and Metastasis 1 (TIAM1) in OSCC and its correlation with clinical outcomes including lymph node metastasis and recurrence. Detection of TIAM1 expression in tumor samples from 56 OSCC patients and oral mucosa samples from 20 healthy people was performed by immunohistochemistry. Then immunostaining score of each patient was calculated. The results revealed that TIAM1 was aberrantly expressed in the OSCC group compared with the normal group. Furthermore, high expression of TIAM1 was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis and the timing of recurrence. Assessment of TIAM1 expression might represent a valid tool in clinical practice for prediction of metastasis, recurrence, and prognosis of OSCC.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the expression of differentiated embryo-chondrocyte expressed gene l(DEC1)in oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC)and its clinical significance. METHODS: Detection of the protein expression of DEC1 in tissue specimens from 80 primary OSCC patients and 30 cases of normal oral mucosa were performed using immunohistochemistry. SPSS10.0 software package was uses for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The result of immunohistochemistry showed that positive expression rate of DEC1 in OSCC tissues was 92.50%, 5.00% in normal oral mucosa tissue. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In OSCC tissues, the difference in expression of DEC1 was statistically significant (P<0.05) between highly differentiated group and lowly differentiated group, between patients with lymph node metastasis and patients without lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: The significantly increased DEC1 gene may be associated with the tumorigenesis and development of OSCC.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: T lymphoma invasion and metastasis inducing factor 1 (TIAM1) overexpression has been reported in a variety of human cancers. However, the investigation of TIAM1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was extremely rare. The aim of the study was to assess TIAM1 expression and explore its role in OSCC. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry staining was performed in 80 primary OSCC patients and 20 normal oral mucosa samples. The expression of TIAM1 and its association with clinicopathological parameters were analyzed using SPSS19.0 software package. RESULTS: TIAM1 expression was significantly stronger in OSCC tissues (91.25%) compared with normal oral mucosa (10.00%); TIAM1 overexpression was significantly correlated with histological grade (P=0.019), clinical stage (P<0.001) and lymph node metastasis (P=0.004), but not significantly correlated with sex or age. CONCLUSIONS: TIAM1 may play an important role in the occurrence, development and metastasis of OSCC, which may be a potentially therapeutic target in the future.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-damage effect of iminoethyl-lysine on noise-induced cochlea damage in guinea pig. METHODS: 40 healthy red eye guinea pigs were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group A, normal control group; Group B, noise group; Group C, noise and drug group; Group D, iminoethyl-lysine group. Guinea pigs of both group B and group C were exposed to 115 dB white noise for 6 hours/day for 6 days. Group C and Group D were treated with iminoethyl-lysine(10 mg/kg) intraperitoneally, while Group B were treated with the same volume of physiological saline. ABR hearing threshold was measured in all animals before and after experiment. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(NOS II) in the cochlea was examined by the method of immunohistochemistry. Also the cochlea of four groups were examined with scanning electronic microscope. ABR hearing threshold, expression of NOS II and structure of cochlea of four groups were compared with each other. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in ABR hearing threshold among four groups before the experiment(P > 0.05). There was no significant ABR hearing threshold shift in Group A and Group D after the experiment(P > 0.05), and there was significant ABR hearing threshold shift in Group B and Group C(P < 0.05). After the experiment, the ABR hearing threshold of group B(60.23 +/- 11.23) dB, was higher than that of Group C(38.46 +/- 7.24) dB, P < 0.05. The expression of NOS II was negative in the cochlea of Group A and Group D, but was stronger in Group B than that in Group C. The damage of outer hair cells of cochlea of Group B was more severe than that of Group C. CONCLUSIONS: The expression of NOS II in the guinea pig's cochlea damaged by noise is positive. Iminoethyl-lysine could inhibit the activity of NOS II and has the anti-damage effect on noise-induced cochlea damage. It is indicated that nitric oxide plays an important role in the pathogenesis of noise-induced hearing loss.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the correlation between expression of differentiated embryo-chondrocyte expressed gene l (DEC1) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which could provide the reference for treatment and prognosis assessment of OSCC. METHODS: The expression of DEC1 in tissues from 56 primary OSCC patients and 20 normal oral mucosa samples were detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical methods, respectively. RESULTS: The results showed that the positive expression rate of DEC1 in the OSCC group was significantly higher than that in the normal group (P <0.05); further, the expression of DEC1 in different OSCC groups was statistically significant (P <0.05). The expression of DEC1 in the 1-year recurrence OSCC group was significantly higher than other groups. The expression of DEC1 in the 3-years no recurrence OSCC group was the lowest. CONCLUSIONS: The expression of DEC1 was associated with the incidence of OSCC and there was a negative correlation between the expression of DEC1 and the prognosis of OSCC.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of platelet activating factor (PAF) in the pathogenesis of secretory otitis media (SOM). METHOD: The content of PAF in blood plasma and middle ear effusion(MEE) were measured in 56(68years) patients with secretory otitis media and in 40 normal subjects respectively by RP-HPLC. RESULT: The concentration of PAF in MEE was remarkably higher than those in blood plasma (P < 0.01). The concentration of PAF in blood plasma in the SOM group was higher than those in the normal control group(P < 0.05). The concentration of PAF of MEE in the mucous fluid group was higher than those in the serous fluid group(P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: PAF might be an important mediator in MEE of SOM, it might be closely related to the persistence of SOM, and might play an important role in the pathogenesis of SOM.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the recovery of wounded surface and reconstruction of laryngeal function after subtotal laryngectomy. METHOD: Thirty-three cases of subtotal laryngectomy were reviewed for analysis. The hyoid bone, most part of thyroid cartilage and the gap before epiglottis exsected while arytenoids cartilage of one side, 1/3 thyroid cartilage and 1/3 true vocal cord were reserved in the subtotal laryngectomy operation. And pedicled cutaneous flap of one side and pedicled musculocutaneous flap of the other side were used to rehabilitate the wounded surface and reconstruct the laryngeal function. RESULT: The function of respiration and swallowing resumed in all cases, 93.9% patients got normal pronunciation function after windpipe casing pulled out. Three-year survival rate was 89.3% and five-year survival rate was 78.6%. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated our method has such advantages as follows: being easy to get material, having good vascular circle, laryngeal narrow seldom happened, shortening the time with windpipe casing and improving the quality of life.
