RESUMEN

Incorporating sulfur (S) atoms into polymer main chains endows these materials with many attractive features, including a high refractive index, mechanical properties, electrochemical properties, and adhesive ability to heavy metal ions. The copolymerization involving S-containing monomers constitutes a facile method for effectively constructing S-containing polymers with diverse structures, readily tunable sequences, and topological structures. In this review, we describe the recent advances in the synthesis of S-containing polymers via copolymerization or multicomponent polymerization techniques concerning a variety of S-containing monomers, such as dithiols, carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, cyclic thioanhydrides, episulfides and elemental sulfur (S8). Particularly, significant focus is paid to precise control of the main-chain sequence, stereochemistry, and topological structure for achieving high-value applications.

RESUMEN

Four new coordination polymers based on 5-(((1H-imidazol-2-yl)methyl)amino) isophthalic acid (H3L) and auxiliary ligands (1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 4,4'-bipyridine), namely, {[Zn(HL)(phen)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (CP 1), {[Ni(HL)(phen)(H2O)]}n (CP 2), {[Ni(HL)(2,2'-bpy)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (CP 3) and {[Cd(HL)(4,4'-bpy)0.5(H2O)]·2H2O}n (CP 4) were rationally assembled. Furthermore, these four CPs were screened as heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition and cyanosilylation reactions under mild conditions. The catalytic experiments showed that CP 1 had the better catalytic performance, excellent substrate tolerance and recyclability for the above two reactions. It is speculated that the excellent activity of CP 1 may be due to the open Lewis base site and the Lewis acidic characteristics of the zinc (II) center. After five cycles, the catalytic activities of CP 1 did not significantly decrease, and the structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the CP 1 was considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts for above the two reactions.

RESUMEN

Four Co(II)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were constructed by a mixed ligand strategy under solvothermal conditions. The controllable modification of the bridging groups in the secondary building units was realized by changing the anions in MOFs 1-3. The MOF 4 with 3D framework structure was obtained by regulating the solvent ratio following the synthesis process of MOF 3. Furthermore, the MOFs 1-4 exhibited efficient photocatalytic activity for the degradation of malachite green (MG) dye without any photosensitizer or cocatalyst under a low-energy light source, the decolorization ratio of MG all reached more than 96.0% within 60 min, and maximal degradation was obtained to be 99.4% (MOF 4). The recycling experiments showed that the degradation rate of MG was still higher than 91% after 10 cycles. In the MOF 4 as representation, the photocatalytic process was explored systematically. The possible mechanism of catalytic degradation was discussed, which proved the existence of efficient oxidation active factors (•O2-, •OH, and h+). The possible intermediates and degradation pathways were investigated based on high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Additionally, MOFs 1-4 also exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue, methyl violet, rhodamine B, and basic red 9.

RESUMEN

Two two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, {[Yb(L)(H2O)2NO3]·2H2O}n (Yb-MOF) and [Er(L)(H2O)3Cl]n (Er-MOF) (H2L = 5-((6H-purin-6-yl)amino)isophthalic acid), were constructed by a solvothermal method and characterized. The catalytic performance study showed that the Yb-MOF could efficiently catalyze the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under 15 W light-emitting diode (LED) blue light irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and free-radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction process involved •O2-, and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. Moreover, Er-MOF exhibited good catalytic efficiency and excellent substrate tolerance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2, and the reaction conditions were mild. After 5 cycles, the catalytic activities of two MOFs did not significantly decrease, and the framework structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the Yb-MOF and Er-MOF were considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the effectiveness of a combined regimen involving injectable hydrogels for the treatment of experimental myocardial infarction. PATIENT CONCERNS: Myocardial infarction is an acute illness that negatively affects quality of life and increases mortality rates. Experimental models of myocardial infarction can aid in disease research by allowing for the development of therapies that effectively manage disease progression and promote tissue repair. DIAGNOSIS: Experimental animal models of myocardial infarction were established using the ligation method on the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery (LAD). INTERVENTIONS: The efficacy of intracardiac injection of hydrogels, combined with cells, drugs, cytokines, extracellular vesicles, or nucleic acid therapies, was evaluated to assess the functional and morphological improvements in the post-infarction heart achieved through the combined hydrogel regimen. OUTCOMES: A literature review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. A total of 83 papers, including studies on 1332 experimental animals (rats, mice, rabbits, sheep, and pigs), were included in the meta-analysis based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The overall effect size observed in the group receiving combined hydrogel therapy, compared to the group receiving hydrogel treatment alone, resulted in an ejection fraction (EF) improvement of 8.87% [95% confidence interval (CI): 7.53, 10.21] and a fractional shortening (FS) improvement of 6.31% [95% CI: 5.94, 6.67] in rat models, while in mice models, the improvements were 16.45% [95% CI: 11.29, 21.61] for EF and 5.68% [95% CI: 5.15, 6.22] for FS. The most significant improvements in EF (rats: MD = 9.63% [95% CI: 4.02, 15.23]; mice: MD = 23.93% [95% CI: 17.52, 30.84]) and FS (rats: MD = 8.55% [95% CI: 2.54, 14.56]; mice: MD = 5.68% [95% CI: 5.15, 6.22]) were observed when extracellular vesicle therapy was used. Although there have been significant results in large animal experiments, the number of studies conducted in this area is limited. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that combining hydrogel with other therapies effectively improves heart function and morphology. Further preclinical research using large animal models is necessary for additional study and validation.

RESUMEN

Block copolymers, comprising polyether and polyolefin segments, are an important and promising category of functional materials. However, the lack of efficient strategies for the construction of polyether-b-polyolefin block copolymers have hindered the development of these materials. Herein, we propose a simple and efficient method to obtain various block copolymers through the copolymerization of epoxides and acrylates via bimetallic synergistic catalysis. The copolymerization of epoxides and acrylates proceeds in a sequence-controlled manner, where the epoxides-involved homo- or copolymerization occurs first, followed by the homopolymerization of acrylates initiated by the alkoxide species from the propagating polymer chain, thus yielding copolymers with a block structure. Notably, the high monomer compatibility of this powerful strategy provides a platform for synthesizing various polyacrylate-based block copolymers comprising polyether, polycarbonate, polythiocarbonate, polyester, and polyurethane segments, respectively.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study investigated the physical fitness and oxygen uptake kinetics (τ[Formula: see text]) along with the O2 delivery and utilization (heart rate kinetics, τHR; deoxyhemoglobin/[Formula: see text] ratio, ∆[HHb]/[Formula: see text]) adaptations of untrained female participants responding to 4 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and 2 weeks of detraining. METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to HIIT (n = 11, 4 × 4 protocol) or nonexercising control (n = 9) groups. Exercising group engaged 4 weeks of treadmill HIIT followed by 2 weeks of detraining while maintaining daily activity level. Ramp-incremental (RI) tests and step-transitions to moderate-intensity exercise were performed. Aerobic capacity and performance (maximal oxygen uptake, [Formula: see text]; gas-exchange threshold, GET; power output, PO), body composition (skeletal muscle mass, SMM; body fat percentage, BF%), muscle oxygenation status (∆[HHb]), [Formula: see text], and HR kinetics were assessed. RESULTS: HIIT elicited improvements in aerobic capacity ([Formula: see text], + 0.17 ± 0.04 L/min; GET, + 0.18 ± 0.05 L/min, P < 0.01; PO-[Formula: see text], ± 23.36 ± 8.37 W; PO-GET, + 17.18 ± 3.07 W, P < 0.05), body composition (SMM, + 0.92 ± 0.17 kg; BF%, - 3.08% ± 0.58%, P < 0.001), and speed up the τ[Formula: see text] (- 8.04 ± 1.57 s, P < 0.001) significantly, extending to better ∆[HHb]/[Formula: see text] ratio (1.18 ± 0.08 to 1.05 ± 0.14). After a period of detraining, the adaptation in body composition and aerobic capacity, as well as the accelerated τ[Formula: see text] were maintained in the HIIT group, but the PO-[Formula: see text] and PO-GET declined below the post-training level (P < 0.05), whereas no changes were reported in controls (P > 0.05). Four weeks of HIIT induced widespread physiological adaptations in females, and the majority of improvements were preserved after 2 weeks of detraining except for power output corresponding to [Formula: see text] and GET.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study investigated the physical fitness and oxygen uptake kinetics ([Formula: see text]) along with the exercise-onset O2 delivery (heart rate kinetics, τHR; changes in normalized deoxyhemoglobin/[Formula: see text] ratio, Δ[HHb]/[Formula: see text]) adaptations of individuals with different physical activity (PA) backgrounds responding to 4 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and the possible effects of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) on training-induced adaptations. METHODS: Twenty subjects (10 high-PA level, HIIT-H; 10 moderate-PA level, HIIT-M) engaged in 4 weeks of treadmill HIIT. Ramp-incremental (RI) test and step-transitions to moderate-intensity exercise were performed. Cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, muscle oxygenation status, VO2 and HR kinetics were assessed at baseline and post-training. RESULTS: HIIT improved fitness status for HIIT-H ([Formula: see text], + 0.26 ± 0.07 L/min; SMM, + 0.66 ± 0.70 kg; body fat, - 1.52 ± 1.93 kg; [Formula: see text], - 7.11 ± 1.05 s, p < 0.05) and HIIT-M ([Formula: see text], 0.24 ± 0.07 L/min, SMM, + 0.58 ± 0.61 kg; body fat, - 1.64 ± 1.37 kg; [Formula: see text], - 5.48 ± 1.05 s, p < 0.05) except for visceral fat area (p = 0.293) without between-group differences (p > 0.05). Oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin amplitude during the RI test increased for both groups (p < 0.05) except for total hemoglobin (p = 0.179). The Δ[HHb]/[Formula: see text] overshoot was attenuated for both groups (p < 0.05) but only eliminated in HIIT-H (1.05 ± 0.14 to 0.92 ± 0.11), and no change was observed in τHR (p = 0.144). Linear mixed-effect models presented positive effects of SMM on absolute [Formula: see text] (p < 0.001) and ΔHHb (p = 0.034). CONCLUSION: Four weeks of HIIT promoted positive adaptations in physical fitness and [Formula: see text] kinetics, with the peripheral adaptations attributing to the observed improvements. The training effects are similar between groups suggesting that HIIT is effective for reaching higher physical fitness levels.

RESUMEN

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease resulted from the unrestrained inflammatory attack towards the insulin-producing islet ß cells. Although the exact etiology underlying T1D remains elusive, viral infections, especially those specific strains of enterovirus, are acknowledged as a critical environmental cue involved in the early phase of disease initiation. Viral infections could either directly impede ß cell function, or elicit pathological autoinflammatory reactions for ß cell killing. Autoimmune responses are bolstered by a massive body of virus-derived exogenous pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and the presence of ß cell-derived damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). In particular, the nucleic acid components and the downstream nucleic acid sensing pathways serve as the major effector mechanism. The endogenous retroviral RNA, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and genomic fragments generated by stressed or dying ß cells induce host responses reminiscent of viral infection, a phenomenon termed as viral mimicry during the early stage of T1D development. Given that the interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) are considered as hub transcription factors to modulate immune responses relevant to viral infection, we thus sought to summarize the critical role of IRFs in T1D pathogenesis. We discuss with focus for the impact of IRFs on the sensitivity of ß cells to cytokine stimulation, the vulnerability of ß cells to viral infection/mimicry, and the intensity of immune response. Together, targeting certain IRF members, alone or together with other therapeutics, could be a promising strategy against T1D.

RESUMEN

The internet is a critical source of health information. It is important to understand online health information seeking related factors among college students, as modifications in this have the potentials to enhance their health-promoting behaviors in their transition into early adulthood. This study assessed the associations among cognitive social factors, eHealth literacy, online health information seeking and health-promoting behaviors; and examined the potential mediation effect of online health information seeking and eHealth literacy on the association between cognitive social factors and health-promoting behaviors. A cross-sectional, Internet-based survey was conducted in a sample of Chinese college students (n = 289) during April to June 2018. The structural model fitted the data well: X2/df = 2.27; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.94; RMSEA = 0.07 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.08); SRMR = 0.07 and the results showed that performance expectancy and health motivation were significantly and positively associated with health-promoting behaviors indirectly through eHealth literacy, adjusting for other cognitive social factors, frequency of online health information seeking and background factors. eHealth literacy is a strong mediator of the association between cognitive social factors (performance expectancy and health motivation) and health-promoting behaviors. Implications and potential interventions to promote eHealth literacy and health-promoting behaviors are discussed.

RESUMEN

Decapoda is one of the most diverse crustacean orders, and has become an important research subject. However, the phylogenetic relationships among the main lineages of Decapoda remain uncertain, especially in the order Brachyura. Herein, we sequenced the whole mitochondrial genome of V. litterata and constructed a phylogenetic tree to understand its phylogenetic relationships with other species. The results showed that the mitochondrial genome of V. litterata was generally similar to mitogenomes of Metazoa reported in the literature, with a size of 16,247 bp, 37 genes, and a control region. Both AT-skew and GC-skew were negative, indicating more abundant Cs and Ts than Gs and As. The gene arrangement of V. litterata is identical to those of Eriocheir hepuensis, Cyclograpsus granulosus, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, Helicana wuana, and Helice tientsinensis but differs from the pancrustacean ground pattern and typical arrangement of Brachyuran crabs. Phylogenetic reconstruction showed that V. litterata belongs to the Varunidae.

RESUMEN

Sesarmops sinensis is a dominant omnivorous crab species, which plays an important ecological function in salt marsh ecosystems. To better understand its immune system and immune related genes under pathogen infection, the transcriptome was analyzed by comparing the data of S. sinensis hepatopancreas stimulated by PBS and PGN. A set of assembly and annotation identified 39,039 unigenes with an average length of 1105 bp, obtaining 1300 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in all, which included 466 remarkably up-regulated unigenes and 834 remarkably down-regulated unigenes. In addition, based on mensurable real time-polymerase chain reaction and high-throughput sequencing, several immune responsive genes were found to be markedly up-regulated under PGN stimulation. In conclusion, in addition to enriching the existing transcriptome data of S. sinensis, this study also clarified the immune response of S. sinensis to PGN stimulation, which will help us to further understand the crustacean's immune system.

RESUMEN

This study isolated CFI gene from Pelteobagrus fulvidraco and named it PfCFI. The cDNA of PfCFI is 2374 bp long, including a 52 bp 5' untranslated sequence, a 222 bp 3' untranslated sequence, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 2100 bp encoding polypeptide consisting of 699 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the PfCFI was closely related to CFI of Ictalurus punctatus. Real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis indicate that there is the PfCFI gene which expressed in all the rest of tested tissues in varied levels, and mainly distributed in liver and least in heart. The reseachers induce the expressions level of PfCFI gene in liver, spleen, head kidney and blood at different points in time after challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and polyriboinosinic polyribocytidylic acid (poly I:C), respectively. Together these results suggested that CFI gene plays an important role in resistance to pathogens in yellow catfish immunity.

RESUMEN

The usage of elemental sulfur (S8 ) for constructing sulfur-containing polymers is of great significance in terms of sulfur resource utilization or fabrication of high-performance polymers. Currently, the random disassembly of S8 hinders its direct use in the precise synthesis of sulfur-containing polymers. Herein, we provide an effective strategy for controlling the dismantlement of S8 to synthesize polydisulfides, a promising category of dynamic bonds containing polymers. In this strategy, the completely alternating copolymerization of one sulfur atom, which is orderly derived from S8 , with episulfides is achieved with MTBD (7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene) as catalyst and [PPN]SbF6 ([PPN]+ is bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium) as cocatalyst. Delightedly, the living- polymerization feature, and the good monomer compatibility allows for the access to diverse polydisulfides. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) was employed to elaborate the copolymerization process.

RESUMEN

Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) is the latest identified small gaseous mediator enabled by its lipophilic nature to freely permeate the biological membranes. Initially, H2 S was recognized by its roles in neuronal activity and vascular relaxation, which makes it an important molecule involved in paracrine signalling pathways. Recently, the immune regulatory function of gasotransmitters, H2 S in particular, is increasingly being appreciated. Endogenous H2 S level has been linked to macrophage activation, polarization and inflammasome formation. Mechanistically, H2 S-induced protein S-sulphydration suppresses several inflammatory pathways including NF-κB and JNK signalling. Moreover, H2 S serves as a potent cellular redox regulator to modulate epigenetic alterations and to promote mitochondrial biogenesis in macrophages. Here in this review, we intend to summarize the recent advancements of H2 S studies in macrophages, and to discuss with focus on the therapeutic potential of H2 S donors by targeting macrophages. The feasibility of H2 S signalling component as a macrophage biomarker under disease conditions would be also discussed.

RESUMEN

As an important economic species in China, aquaculture of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii has suffered huge losses due to infection by pathogenic bacteria, mainly by Aeromonas hydrophila, which leads to high mortality and huge economic loss. To better understand the immune response of crayfish against bacterial infection, we compared and analyzed transcriptome data of hepatopancreatic tissue from P. clarkii that were either challenged with A. hydrophila or treated with PBS. After assembly and annotation of the data, 32,041 unigenes with an average length of 1512 base pairs were identified. Compared to control group, Differential gene expression (DEG) analysis revealed 608 DEGs were obtained, of which 274 unigenes were upregulated and 334 were downregulated in the A. hydrophila group. Furthermore, the expression levels of eight selected immune-related DEGs were validated by qRT-PCR, substantiating the reliability of RNA-seq results. This study not only provides effective data support for immune defense strategies of P. clarkii in response to bacterial infections, but also provides new information about the P. clarkii immune system and defense mechanisms, and a valuable basis for further studies to elucidate the molecular immune mechanisms of this species.

RESUMEN

Effects of chemical structure, concentration, and pH on antimicrobial activity of conjugated bile acids were investigated in 4 strains of lactobacilli. Considerable differences were observed in the antimicrobial activity between the 6 human conjugated bile acids, including glycocholic acid, taurocholic acid, glycodeoxycholic acid, taurodeoxycholic acid, glycochenodeoxycholic acid, and taurochenodeoxycholic acid. Glycodeoxycholic acid and glycochenodeoxycholic acid generally showed significantly higher antimicrobial activity against the lactobacilli, but glycocholic acid and taurocholic acid exhibited the significantly lower antimicrobial activity. Glycochenodeoxycholic acid was selected for further analysis, and the results showed its antimicrobial activity was concentration-dependent, and there was a significantly negative linear correlation (R2 > 0.98) between bile-antimicrobial index and logarithmic concentration of the bile acid for each strain of lactobacilli. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of glycochenodeoxycholic acid was also observed to be pH-dependent, and it was significantly enhanced with the decreasing pH, with the result that all the strains of lactobacilli were unable to grow at pH 5.0. In conclusion, chemical structure, concentration, and pH are key factors influencing antimicrobial activity of conjugated bile acids against lactobacilli. This study provides theoretical guidance and technology support for developing a scientific method for evaluating the bile tolerance ability of potentially probiotic strains of lactobacilli.

RESUMEN

Chromium (Cr) as a chromate anion has a strong redox capacity that seriously threatens the ecological environment and human health. Cr can contaminate water and impart toxicity to aquatic species. Procambarus clarkii is an important food source that once represented a large proportion of the aquaculture industry due to its rapid reproduction and high economic value. However, there have been reports on the death of P. clarkii due to heavy metal pollution. The underlying mechanism regarding heavy metal toxicity was studied in this paper. The transcriptome data of hemocytes extracted from P. clarkii injected with Cr were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing and compared to the control group. In total, 48,128,748 clean reads were obtained in the treatment group and 56,480,556 clean reads were obtained in the control group. The reads were assembled using Trinity and the identified unigenes were then annotated. Then, 421 differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) were found, 170 of which were upregulated and 251 downregulated. Many of these genes were found to be related to glutathione metabolism and transportation. The glutathione metabolic pathway of P. clarkii was thus activated by Cr exposure to detoxify and maintain body function. Validation of DEGs with quantitative real-time PCR confirms the changes in gene expression. Thus, this study provides data supporting a glutathione-focused response of P. clarkii to exposure to heavy metals.

RESUMEN

Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) help advance our learning of molecular evolution and phylogenetic relationships. The mitogenome of H. latimera is 16,246 bp in length, which typically contains 37 animal mitogenome genes consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes, as well as a control region. The AT content of H. latimera is 69.1%. The A + T skew of the mitogenome of H. latimera was slightly negative (-0.017). The size of Thirteen PCGs is from 162 bp to 1731 bp. Twenty-two tRNA genes ranged from 62 to 73 bp and were highly A + T biased. All tRNA genes owed a typical cloverleaf structure, not including the trnS1 gene lacking a dihydroxyuridine arm. One PCG, two rRNAs, and 12 of the tRNAs were rearranged compared to the pancrustacean gene order. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the locationt of H. latimera among the Varunidae family.

RESUMEN

Polymeric materials possessing both high refractive indices and high Abbe numbers are much in demand for the development of advanced optical devices. However, the synthesis of such functional materials is a challenge because of the trade-off between these two properties. Herein, a synthetic strategy is presented for enhancing the optical properties of CO2 -based polycarbonates by modifying the polymer's topological structure. Terpolymers with thiocarbonate and carbonate units randomly distributed in the polymers' main chain were synthesized via the terpolymerization of cyclohexene oxide with a mixture of CO2 and COS in the presence of metal catalysts, most notably a dinuclear aluminum complex. DFT calculations were employed to explain why different structural sequence were obtained with distinct bimetallic catalysts. Varying the CO2 pressure made it possible to obtain terpolymers with tunable carbonate linkages in the polymer chain. More importantly, optical property studies revealed that terpolymers with comparable thiocarbonate and carbonate units exhibited a refractive index of 1.501 with an enhanced Abbe number as high as 48.6, much higher than the corresponding polycarbonates or polythiocarbonates. Additionally, all terpolymers containing varying thiocarbonate content displayed good thermal properties with Tg >109 °C and Td >260 °C, suggesting little loss in the thermal stability compared to the polycarbonate. Hence, modification of the topological structure of the polycarbonate is an efficient method of obtaining polymeric materials with enhanced optical properties without compromising thermal performance.
