RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in Slovak population and compare the literature findings, whether the prevalence of MRONJ is underestimated. BACKGROUND: Antiresorptive drugs significantly increase quality of life, although during therapy, or in post-treatment period, osteonecrosis of the jaws might occur as a severe adverse effect. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a severe problem that has been observed in the past few years. METHODS: This multi-centric study evaluates the prevalence in Slovak population, assesses the values from 4 largest centres of maxillofacial surgery in Slovakia (1166 patients with MRONJ) and provides the comparison of literature review. RESULTS: Between 2010-2015, there was increasing number of newly diagnosed patients with MRONJ (1166 overall MRONJ patients) annually, except 2012 (mean growth of 123.88 %). This finding was supported by a statistical analysis of the rising tendency of prevalence in literature, where there was a significant difference in prevalence of non-oncologic patients before and after 2010 t(15) = 2.725, p = 0.016. The 6-year prevalence was 1.34 % in population with antiresorptive drugs intake, for osteoporosis 0.47 %, for breast cancer 4.10 %, prostate cancer 3.99 % and multiple myeloma 21.26 %. CONCLUSION: This study considers that there is a significant rising tendency of MRONJ in non-oncological patients, what could be caused by underestimation of the risk for development MRONJ in these patients. There should be a better cooperation and information among dentists and doctors indicating the antiresorptive treatment and strong emphasis on primary prevention before the initial treatment even in non-oncological patients (Tab. 5, Fig. 7, Ref. 69).

RESUMEN

A neoplastic proliferation of B cell lymphocyte is called plasma cell neoplasms, results from malignant plasma cells transformation in bone marrow. The authors present a clinical study and overview of this pathology in maxillofacial region for six years (Tab. 2, Ref. 14).

RESUMEN

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) in the mandible is a rare disease. LCH was formerly known as histiocytosis X. Histiocytosis X is a granulomatous condition that derives form a clonal proliferation of histiocytes. It has a variable clinical course. LCG may be local or disseminated. It is a reactive disorder or a truly malignant process. This article describes a case of a 45 - year old man with Langerhans cell histiocytosis in his jaw (Fig. 4, Ref. 11).

RESUMEN

A series of 453 patients admitted to the 2nd Clinic of Stomatology in Bratislava over the ten-year period from 1977-1986 was statistically evaluated. The series comprised patients with the diagnosis of epidermoid carcinoma of the oral cavity, with the exception of carcinoma of the lip. The condition of the regional lymphatic apparatus at the first examination and over the succeeding period was studied. The relationship between the treatment used, clinical stage and prognosis of tumorous disease in the orofacial region was evaluated. The possibilities of different types of cervical dissection are discussed along with the histological findings recorded. In the light of the survival period a direct relationship between the clinical stage of the disease at the onset of treatment and prognosis has been confirmed.

RESUMEN

At present we include under the term arthropathy of the temporomandibular joint a large group of affections of this joint. In recent years the term myofacial painful dysfunction syndrome was defined in mode detail. It is a condition characterized by its polyaetiological nature and is linked to the area of the temporo-mandibular joint and its surroundings. It is associated with pain without apparent destructive changes on the X-ray picture. In the submitted paper attention is paid to conservative treatment of painful dysfunctional muscular syndrome by means of an occulsion splint. In a group of 32 patient the advantages of the method are demonstrated.

RESUMEN

The authors draws attention to the possible use of acupuncture in stomatology used in the course of 13 years in diseases of polyaetiological nature or where the aetiology is not well known. They demonstrate the success of this therapeutic method in diseases such as glossodynia, stomatodynia, primary neuralgia of the trigreminal nerve, contractures of the jaws, myofacial dysfunctional syndrome and disorders of salivary secretion in 178 patients treated at the out-patient department of the Second Stomatological Clinic in Bratislava.
