RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To quantitatively investigate alterations of retinal microcirculation in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and to identify the ability of retinal microcirculation parameters in differentiating coronary artery disease (CAD) subtypes. METHODS: All participants with angina pectoris underwent coronary computed tomography angiography. Patients with lumen diameter reduction of 20-50 % in all major coronary arteries were defined as NOCAD, while patients with at least one major coronary artery lumen diameter reduction ≥ 50 % were recruited as obstructive coronary artery disease (OCAD). Participants without a history of ophthalmic or systemic vascular disease were recruited as healthy controls. Retinal neural-vasculature was measured quantitatively by OCTA, including peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and vessel density (VD) of the optic disc, superficial vessel plexus (SVP), deep vessel plexus (DVP), and foveal density (FD 300). p < 0.017 is considered significant in multiple comparisons. RESULTS: A total of 185 participants (65 NOCAD, 62 OCAD, and 58 controls) were enrolled. Except for the DVP fovea (p = 0.069), significantly reduced VD in all other regions of SVP and DVP was detected in both the NOCAD and OCAD groups compared to control group (all p < 0.017), while a more significant decrease was found in OCAD compared to NOCAD. Multivariate regression analysis showed that lower VD in superior hemi part of whole SVP (OR: 0.582, 95 % CI: 0.451-0.752) was an independent risk factor for NOCAD compared to controls, while lower VD in the whole SVP (OR: 0.550, 95 % CI: 0.421-0.719) was an independent risk factor for OCAD compared to NOCAD. Using the integration of retinal microvascular parameters, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for NOCAD versus control and OCAD versus NOCAD were 0.840 and 0.830, respectively. CONCLUSION: Significant retinal microcirculation impairment, while milder than that in OCAD was observed in NOCAD patients, indicating retinal microvasculature assessment might provide a new systemic microcirculation observation window for NOCAD. Furthermore, retinal microvasculature may serve as a new indicator to assess the severity of CAD with good performance of retinal microvascular parameters in identifying different CAD subtypes.

Background: Identifying the fundus objective biomarkers for the major depressive disorders (MDD) may help promote mental health. The aim of this study was to evaluate retinal neurovascular changes and further investigate their association with disease severity in MDD. Methods: This cross-sectional study conducted in the hospital enrolled patients with MDD and healthy controls.The retinal neurovascular parameters for all subjects, including vessel density (VD), thickness of ganglion cell complex (GCC) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and optic nerve head (ONH) eg are automatically calculated by the software in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The severity of MDD including depressive symptoms, anxiety, cognition, and insomnia was assessed by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) respectively. Results: This study included 74 MDD patients (n=74 eyes) and 60 healthy controls (HCs) (n=60 eyes). MDD patients showed significantly decreased VD of superficial and deep capillary plexus, thickness of GCC and RNFL, and volume of ONH (all p<0.05) and increased vertical cup-to-disc ratio and global loss volume (GLV) (all p<0.05) compared to HCs. Positive associations were found between HAMD scores and cup area (r=0.30, p=0.035), cup volume (r=0.31, p=0.029), and disc area (r=0.33, p=0.020) as well as ISI scores and RNFL thickness (r=0.34, p=0.047). Conclusion: We found the retinal neurovascular impairment and its association with disease severity in MDD patients. OCTA showed promise as a potential complementary assessment tool for MDD.

The relationship between temperature and the mechanical properties of an end cross-linked equal molar random copolyether elastomer of 3,3-bis(azidomethyl)oxetane and tetrahydrofuran (P(BAMO-r-THF)) was investigated. During this investigation, the performances of two P(BAMO-r-THF) elastomers with different thermal histories were compared at different temperatures. The elastomer as prepared at 20 °C (denoted as S0) exhibited semi-crystallization morphology. Wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the crystal grains within elastomer S0 result from the crystallization of BAMO micro-blocks embedded in P(BAMO-r-THF) polymeric chains, and the crystallinity is temperature irreversible under static conditions. After undergoing a heating-cooling cycle, this elastomer became an amorphous elastomer (denoted as S1). Regarding mechanical properties, at 20 °C, break strains and stresses of 315 ± 22% and 0.46 ± 0.01 MPa were obtained for elastomer S0; corresponding values of 294 ± 6% and 0.32 ± 0.02 MPa were obtained for elastomer S1. At -40 °C, these strains and stresses simultaneously increased to 1085 ± 21% and 8.90 ± 0.72 MPa (S0) and 1181 ± 25% and 10.23 ± 0.44 MPa (S1), respectively, owing to the strain-induced crystallization of BAMO micro-blocks within the P(BAMO-r-THF) polymeric chains.
