PURPOSE: To assess the acquisition rate and agreement of axial length (AL) measurements with the OA-2000, Anterion, and IOLMaster 500 in cataractous patients. METHODS: In total, 298 eyes of 191 cataractous patients were enrolled and scanned with the three devices in random order. The success rate of AL measurements per device was calculated and a chi-square test was utilized to identify the differences in acquisition rate between the three devices. Logistic regression analysis was applied to evaluate the association of different cataract types and severity with the AL measurement acquisition rate. Bland-Altman plots were mapped to appraise the agreement of AL values. RESULTS: AL measurements were successfully achieved in 288 eyes (96.64%) with the OA-2000, in 282 eyes (94.30%) with the Anteiron, and in 246 eyes (82.55%) with the IOLMaster 500. Significant differences in the acquisition rate were found between either of the SS-OCT devices and IOLMaster 500 by chi-square analysis (P < 0.001). No significant difference was noted between OA-2000 and Anterion. Increasing severity of posterior subcapsular cataract was associated with a higher failure rate with the IOLMaster 500. Bland-Altman analysis identified good agreement between the three biometers with narrow 95% limits of agreement. CONCLUSIONS: The OA-2000 and Anterion showed similarly higher acquisition rate of AL measurements than IOLMaster 500 in cataractous patients. Good agreement for AL values was found between the three biometers in cataractous patients.

RESUMEN

This article presents a novel and reliable low-cost data acquisition solution for high frequency and real-time applications in vehicular dynamics. Data acquisition systems for highly dynamic systems based on low-cost platforms face different challenges such as a constrained data retrieval rate. Basic data reading functions in these platforms are inefficient and, when used, they limit electronics acquisition rate capabilities. This paper explains a new low-cost, modular and open platform to read different types of sensors at high speed rates. Conventional reading functions are avoided to speed up acquisition rate, but this negatively affects data reliability of the system. To solve this and exploit higher data managing rates, a number of custom secure layers are implemented to secure a reliable acquisition. This paper describes the new low-cost electronics developed for high rate acquisition applications and inspects its performance and robustness against the introduction of an increasing number of sensors connected to the board. In most cases, acquisition rates of the system are duplicated using this new solution.

IntroductionIn 2012 a large epidemic of pertussis occurred in the Netherlands. We assessed pertussis toxin (PT) antibody levels in longitudinal serum samples from Dutch 10-18 year-olds, encompassing the epidemic, to investigate pertussis infection incidence. Methods: Blood was sampled in October 2011 (n = 239 adolescents), then 1 year (2012; n = 228) and 3 years (2014; n = 167) later. PT-IgG concentrations were measured by immunoassay and concentrations ≥50 IU/mL (seropositive) assumed indicative of an infection within the preceding year. Results: During the 2012 epidemic, 10% of participants became seropositive, while this was just 3% after the epidemic. The pertussis acquisition rate proved to be sixfold higher during the epidemic (97 per 1,000 person-years) compared with 2012-2014 (16 per 1,000 person-years). In 2012, pertussis notifications among adolescents nationwide were 228/100,000 (0.23%), which is at least 40 times lower than the seropositivity percentage. Remarkably, 17 of the 22 seropositive participants in 2011, were still seropositive in 2012 and nine remained seropositive for at least 3 years. Discussion: Longitudinal studies allow a better estimation of pertussis infections in the population. A PT-IgG concentration ≥50 IU/mL as indication of recent infection may overestimate these numbers in cross-sectional serosurveillance and should be used carefully.

INTRODUCTION: Immunosuppressed patients exhibit low antibody acquisition rates following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination. Kidney transplant recipients previously exhibited low antibody acquisition rates after two vaccine doses, which increased after the third dose. We evaluated antibody titers of Japanese post-kidney transplant patients after the fourth and fifth vaccinations. METHODS: Antibody titers for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were measured between 3 weeks and 3 months after the fourth or fifth vaccination. RESULTS: Increased antibody acquisition rates were observed after the fourth (75.0% antibody-positive) and fifth (81.5% antibody-positive) vaccinations. The antibody-acquired group after the fourth vaccination exhibited a higher body mass index and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) than the non-acquired group. A higher eGFR was associated with antibody acquisition after the fifth vaccination. CONCLUSION: In Japanese post-kidney transplant patients, the antibody acquisition rate increased with each vaccine additional dose. Additional vaccinations are recommended to protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Biologging now allows detailed recording of animal movement, thus informing behavioural ecology in ways unthinkable just a few years ago. In particular, combining GPS and accelerometry allows spatially explicit tracking of various behaviours, including predation events in large terrestrial mammalian predators. Specifically, identification of location clusters resulting from prey handling allows efficient location of killing events. For small predators with short prey handling times, however, identifying predation events through technology remains unresolved. We propose that a promising avenue emerges when specific foraging behaviours generate diagnostic acceleration patterns. One such example is the caching behaviour of the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), an active hunting predator strongly relying on food storage when living in proximity to bird colonies. METHODS: We equipped 16 Arctic foxes from Bylot Island (Nunavut, Canada) with GPS and accelerometers, yielding 23 fox-summers of movement data. Accelerometers recorded tri-axial acceleration at 50 Hz while we obtained a sample of simultaneous video recordings of fox behaviour. Multiple supervised machine learning algorithms were tested to classify accelerometry data into 4 behaviours: motionless, running, walking and digging, the latter being associated with food caching. Finally, we assessed the spatio-temporal concordance of fox digging and greater snow goose (Anser caerulescens antlanticus) nesting, to test the ecological relevance of our behavioural classification in a well-known study system dominated by top-down trophic interactions. RESULTS: The random forest model yielded the best behavioural classification, with accuracies for each behaviour over 96%. Overall, arctic foxes spent 49% of the time motionless, 34% running, 9% walking, and 8% digging. The probability of digging increased with goose nest density and this result held during both goose egg incubation and brooding periods. CONCLUSIONS: Accelerometry combined with GPS allowed us to track across space and time a critical foraging behaviour from a small active hunting predator, informing on spatio-temporal distribution of predation risk in an Arctic vertebrate community. Our study opens new possibilities for assessing the foraging behaviour of terrestrial predators, a key step to disentangle the subtle mechanisms structuring many predator-prey interactions and trophic networks.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a low-cost multimodal intervention on the acquisition of carbapenem-non-susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by patients in low-resource intensive care units. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a quasi-experimental study in a referral hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia: pre-intervention phase 1 (2013-2014), intervention phase 2 (2014-2015) and post-intervention phase 3 (2015-2016). The intervention was hand hygiene promotion and environmental cleaning and disinfection combined with patient disinfection and cohorting. The primary outcome was acquisition of resistant bacteria per 100 patient-days at risk, which was assessed by active microbiological surveillance and analysed with a multilevel Poisson segmented regression model. RESULTS: In phase 1 (387 patients), the acquisition rate was 4.3/100 days for carbapenem-non-susceptible A. baumannii versus 1.1/100 days for both K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa. There was a significant step change from phase 1 to phase 3 (361 patients) in the acquisition of carbapenem-non-susceptible strains, the incidence rate ratio (IRR) was 0.343 (99%CI: 0.164-0.717). This significant change was mainly due to reduced acquisitions of resistant A. baumannii (IRR 0.4, 99%CI: 0.181-1.061). Negative confounding was observed. CONCLUSION: A multimodal intervention to prevent acquisition of resistant pathogens is feasible and may be effective in ICUs in lower-middle income countries.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) are highly drug-resistant pathogens. Screening the contacts of newly-identified CPE patients is crucial for nosocomial transmission control. We evaluated the acquisition rate of CPE in close contacts as a function of CPE genotype. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted in Asan Medical Center, a 2,700-bed, tertiary teaching hospital in Seoul, Korea, between November 2010 and October 2017. Index cases were defined as patients with positive tests for CPE from any infected or colonized site during hospitalization who had no direct epidemiologic linkage with existing CPE patients; close contact patients were defined as those whose hospital stay overlapped with the stay of an index case for at least one day and who occupied the same room or intensive care unit (ICU). Secondary patients were defined as those who produced positive CPE culture isolates from surveillance cultures that had the same CPE enzyme as that of the index case patients. RESULTS: A total of 211 index case patients and 2,689 corresponding contact patients were identified. Of the contact patients, 1,369 (50.9%) including 649 New-Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) and 448 Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing CPE exposures were screened, and 44 secondary patients (3.2%; 95% confidence interval 2.3 - 4.3%) were positive for NDM-1-producing CPE (16 patients) and KPC-producing (24 patients) CPE. The CPE acquisition rate (5.4%) for KPC-producing CPE exposures was significantly higher than that for NDM-1 exposures (2.7%) (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: The CPE acquisition rate was 3.2% among close contacts sharing a multi-patient room, with about a two-fold higher risk of KPC-producing CPE than NDM-1-producing CPE.

BACKGROUND: Peroral cholangioscopy (POCS)-guided forceps biopsy is a method for diagnosing indeterminate biliary strictures and for the preoperative identification of the exact perihilar and distal margins of biliary tract cancer (BTC). However, POCS-guided forceps biopsy may result in an insufficient amount of specimen at times. Therefore, we evaluated the adequate tissue acquisition rate and the factors affecting the adequate tissue acquisition of POCS-guided forceps biopsy for the biliary tract. METHODS: Patients who underwent POCS-guided forceps biopsy for biliary disease between September 2016 and October 2018 at our hospital were enrolled retrospectively. We evaluated the adequate tissue acquisition rate of POCS-guided forceps biopsy for the biliary lesion and that for non-stenotic bile duct. In addition, the factors affecting the adequate tissue acquisition rate of POCS-guided forceps biopsy were evaluated. RESULTS: We enrolled 47 patients with biliary disease and performed POCS-guided forceps biopsy for biliary lesion and POCS-guided forceps mapping biopsy for non-stenotic bile duct in 40 and 36 patients, respectively. The adequate tissue acquisition rates of POCS-guided forceps biopsy for biliary lesions and that for non-stenotic bile duct were 86.4%, and 68.9%, respectively. In the multivariate logistic regression analyses, age, and previous biliary stenting before POCS were factors affecting the adequate tissue acquisition rate of POCS-guided forceps biopsy for the biliary lesion. For non-stenotic bile duct, the location of the biliary lesion, endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST), and procedure time of POCS were factors affecting the adequate tissue acquisition rate of POCS-guided forceps mapping biopsy. CONCLUSIONS: Previous biliary stenting was a factor affecting a low tissue acquisition rate of POCS-guided forceps biopsy for the biliary lesion. In the POCS-guided forceps mapping biopsy, the location of the biliary lesion, EST, and procedure time were factors affecting tissue acquisition rates.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC/TOFMS) is used to characterize complex bio-oil samples because of the high peak capacity associated with the high acquisition rate and mass spectra deconvolution capability of TOFMS. A recent application of fast GC × GC for this type of analysis improved sample throughput while achieving the same peak capacity without the use of cryogenic liquids. This work evaluates the effect of the TOFMS data acquisition rate on the quality of the analytical information obtained by GC × GC/TOFMS. In the analysis of coconut fiber bio-oil under fast GC × GC/TOFMS conditions, use of high data acquisition rates (200-300 Hz) increases the number of identifiable peaks by more than 50% compared with that achieved at the conventional rate of 100 Hz. The acquisition rate can affect the peak capacity by a factor of 3 or more. This is the first study to demonstrate the importance of optimizing the data acquisition rate, a parameter that has previously been neglected in the literature, in GC × GC/TOFMS development.

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas-mediated immunity in bacteria allows bacterial populations to protect themselves against pathogens. However, it also exposes them to the dangers of auto-immunity by developing protection that targets its own genome. Using a simple model of the coupled dynamics of phage and bacterial populations, we explore how acquisition rates affect the probability of the bacterial colony going extinct. We find that the optimal strategy depends on the initial population sizes of both viruses and bacteria. Additionally, certain combinations of acquisition and dynamical rates and initial population sizes guarantee protection, owing to a dynamical balance between the evolving population sizes, without relying on acquisition of viral spacers. Outside this regime, the high cost of auto-immunity limits the acquisition rate. We discuss these optimal strategies that minimize the probability of the colony going extinct in terms of recent experiments. Xylella fastidiosa causes Pierce's disease (PD) and is transmitted by xylem-sap-feeding insects. While X. fastidiosa -infected grapevines have been detected, the transmission vectors reported have never been recorded in Taiwan. Previous studies have suggested that Kolla paulula (Walker) and Bothrogonia ferruginea (F.) are candidate vectors in Taiwan. Here, we explored the life history of these two leafhoppers, evaluated the transmission efficiency of X. fastidiosa by the vectors, and investigated the genetic identity of three collected X. fastidiosa strains, namely, GMb, BQa, and BQ7f from the grapevine cultivars Golden Muscat (GM) and Black Queen (BQ), and one previously extracted strain GV148 from Kyoho (GV) showing PD symptoms in local vineyards. The results showed that all four strains were 100% identical to X. fastidiosa isolate Temecula1 from a naturally infected grapevine in the United States based on sequence analyses of 16S rRNA and 16S-23S ITS. The acquisition rates by K. paulula and B. ferruginea from the symptomatic cultivar Golden Muscat were 83.3 and 70.0% per individual, and the transmission rates to healthy grapevines were 13.3 and 6.7%, respectively. The acquisition rates by the groups of three K. paulula from the symptomatic cultivars Golden Muscat and Black Queen were 54.7 and 49.6%, respectively. Additionally, the transmission rates by K. paulula from and to each of these two grapevine cultivars were not significantly different. In view of their acquisition from infected grapevines and the effective transmission of X. fastidiosa to healthy grapevines, these two sharpshooter species are vectors of X. fastidiosa in Taiwan.

Travel to (sub)tropical countries is a well-known risk factor for acquiring resistant bacterial strains, which is especially of significance for travellers from countries with low resistance rates. In this study we investigated the rate of and risk factors for travel-related acquisition of extended spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E), ciprofloxacin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CIPR-E) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Data before and after travel were collected from 445 participants. Swabs were cultured with an enrichment broth and sub-cultured on selective agar plates for ESBL detection, and on plates with a ciprofloxacin disc. ESBL production was confirmed with the double-disc synergy test. Species identification and susceptibility testing were performed with the Vitek-2 system. All isolates were subjected to ertapenem Etest. ESBL and carbapenemase genes were characterized by PCR and sequencing. Twenty-seven out of 445 travellers (6.1%) already had ESBL-producing strains and 45 of 445 (10.1%) travellers had strains resistant to ciprofloxacin before travel. Ninety-eight out of 418 (23.4%) travellers acquired ESBL-E and 130 of 400 (32.5%) travellers acquired a ciprofloxacin-resistant strain. Of the 98 ESBL-E, predominantly Escherichia coli and predominantly blaCTX-M-15, 56% (55/98) were resistant to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and co-trimoxazole. Multivariate analysis showed that Asia was a high-risk area for ESBL-E as well as CIPR-E acquisition. Travellers with diarrhoea combined with antimicrobial use were significantly at higher risk for acquisition of resistant strains. Only one carbapenemase-producing isolate was acquired, isolated from a participant after visiting Egypt. In conclusion, travelling to Asia and diarrhoea combined with antimicrobial use are important risk factors for acquiring ESBL-E and CIPR-E.

Optimization of peak bone mass during adolescence is important for osteoporosis prevention. Studies in rodents and humans have demonstrated the harmful effects of sugar intake on bone health. With the high levels of sucrose in the diets of adolescents, it is necessary to understand the influence of glucose and fructose on growing bones. This study compared the effects of dietary glucose and fructose on bone formation, microarchitecture, and strength. Because of the different metabolic effects of glucose and fructose, we hypothesized that their individual effects on bone would be different. Eighteen male Sprague-Dawley rats (age, 60 days) were randomly assigned to high-fructose (n = 9; 40% fructose, 10% glucose) or high-glucose diet (n = 9; 50% glucose) for 12 weeks. Bone measurements included histology and histomorphometry of trabecular bone in the distal femur and a 3-point bending test of the whole tibia. Whole liver mass and postprandial serum glucose, insulin, and triglycerides were used to assess differences in energy metabolism between the diets. There were no differences in food intake, body weight, or visceral adiposity between groups, but fructose consumption led to heavier livers (P = .001) and elevated serum triglycerides (P = .00). The distal femurs of fructose-fed rats had greater bone volume (bone volume/total volume; P = .03), lower bone surface (bone surface/bone volume; P = .02), and thicker trabeculae (trabecular thickness; P = .01). The tibias of the fructose-fed rats also withstood a greater maximum flexure load (P = .032). These results indicate that consumption of the high-fructose diet resulted in stronger bones with enhanced microarchitecture than consumption of the high-glucose diet.

Objective To investigate the method of establishing a model of delay eyeblink condi-tioning ( DEC) in no surgical cynomolgus monkey and analyze the related acquisition rule.Methods Using the special monkey chairs to fix 6 adult male cynomolgus monkeys,they were sitting on the chairs and keep-ing awake,and heads could rotate freely during the whole training session.In the experiment,the 6 monkeys were trained in DEC with a tone (500 ms,85 dB) as the conditioned stimulus (CS),paired with a corneal oxygen-puff (100 ms,5 psi) as the unconditioned stimulus (US).There were 120 trials per-session,and 2 sessions per-day.During the experiments,an infrared emitter/detector attached to spectacles for eyeblink re-cording,the data of conditioned response ( CR) and startle response ( SR) were analyzed offline.Result-s Among the 6 cynomolgus monkeys,4 of them completed all of the training process of DEC and 3 monkeys had successful acquisition of DEC.The average CR rate in the last training session reached ( 64.67 ± 2.00)%,(P<0.01);1 monkey only showed a high acquisition rate( 85.00%) at the first training session, and the low CR rate in the next training sessions with the average rate of 18.16%,suggesting that the DEC model was failed to established.The SR rates in 4 cynomolgus monkeys were low with average rate of 5.47%. Conclusion Although the DEC behavior training of the cynomolgus monkey is easy to be influenced by many inside or outside factors,DEC can be obtained under the condition of non surgery and proper braking.
