RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To explore the prevalence and causes of loss of visual acuity and visual field in highly myopic eyes. DESIGN: Population-based study. PARTICIPANTS: 4439 subjects of the Beijing Eye Study underwent ophthalmological and systemic examinations including frequency doubling technology perimetry. METHODS: High myopia was defined by a refractive error of ≤-6 diopters (D) or axial length >26.0 mm. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence of vision impairment causes. RESULTS: 212 highly myopic eyes from 154 participants were included with a mean age of 56.2 ± 9.6 years, a mean refractive error of -9.87 ± 3.70 D and a mean axial length of 27.2 ± 1.3 mm. We observed moderate/severe vision impairment (MSVI) in 40 eyes (18.9%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 13.6-24.2) and blindness in 10 eyes (4.7%; 95% CI, 1.8-7.6). Primary causes for MSVI and blindness were myopic macular degeneration (MMD) (29/50; 58%), age-related macular degeneration (1/50; 2%), and branch macular retinal vein occlusion (1/50; 2%). Secondary causes were MMD (4/50; 8%) and optic nerve atrophy (14/50, 28%), further differentiated into non-glaucomatous optic atrophy (NGOA) (9/50; 18%) and glaucomatous optic atrophy (GOA) (5/50; 10%). Prevalence of MMD as vision impairment cause increased significantly from 1/61 (1.6%) in the refractive error group of -6.00 to ≥-7.00 D, to 16/25 (64%) in the group of <-15.0 D. Higher MMD prevalence correlated with higher myopic refractive error (P < 0.001) and increased likelihood of concomitant optic neuropathy (P < 0.001). Similarly, prevalence of optic neuropathy as vision impairment cause increased from 0/61 (0%) in the refractive error group of -6.00 D to ≥-7.00 D, to 9/25 (36%) in the group of <-15.0 D. Higher optic neuropathy prevalence correlated with more myopic refraction (P < 0.001) and older age (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: In this population-based recruited cohort of highly myopic patients, optic neuropathy accounted for vision impairment in 9.0% eyes, which was lower than the prevalence of MMD as vision impairment cause (18.9%). Notably, optic neuropathy became a significant contributor to vision impairment in more advanced high myopia, reaching 36% in the group with refractive error of <-15.0 D. RESUMEN

This study investigates the distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) within the Beijing water system, specifically examining the Yongding, Chaobai, Beiyun, Jiyun, and Daqing rivers. Results indicate that the Beiyun River exhibits the highest REE concentrations, ranging from 35.95 to 59.78 µg/mL, while the Daqing River shows the lowest concentrations, ranging from 15.79 to 17.48 µg/mL. LREEs (La to Nd) predominate with a total concentration of 23.501 µg/mL, leading to a notable LREE/HREE ratio of 7.901. Positive Ce anomalies (0.70-1.11) and strong positive Eu anomalies (1.38-2.49) were observed. The study suggests that the Beijing water system's REEs may originate from geological and anthropogenic sources, such as mining and industrial activities in neighboring regions, including Inner Mongolia. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring and effective water management strategies to address REE-related environmental concerns.

RESUMEN

Beijing You Chicken, a valuable local chicken breed from Beijing, China, was once listed as an endangered breed. From the point of view of conservation, the preservation of this breed is an important task for the local researchers. Semen cryopreservation is a popular method to maintain valuable species. However, during cryopreservation, semen is susceptible to oxidative damage. Melatonin is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger, so it has been selected to improve the efficiency of sperm cryopreservation. In this study, the chicken semen was treated with different concentrations of melatonin in the cryopreservation solution. The results showed that melatonin at concentrations of 10-3 M and 10-5 M significantly improved sperm progressive motility and total motility, respectively, compared to the control (P < 0.05). Melatonin at 10-3 M also significantly improved the plasma membrane and acrosome integrity of spermatozoa compared to the control. The mechanisms are that melatonin significantly reduces the level of ROS and preserves sperm mitochondrial membrane potential. Most importantly, the melatonin-treated cryopreserved chicken sperm after artificial insemination significantly increased the hatching rate of chicks compared to the control (p < 0.05). The results show that melatonin has a positive effect on the quality of the cryopreserved spermatozoa. These results provide the theoretical and practical basis for using melatonin to improve Beijing You Chicken conservation, and they may also be applicable to poultry as a whole.

RESUMEN

Beijing Satellite 3 is a high-performance optical remote sensing satellite with a spatial resolution of 0.3-0.5 m. It can provide timely and independent ultra-high-resolution spatial big data and comprehensive spatial information application services. At present, there is no relevant research on the fusion method of BJ-3A satellite images. In many applications, high-resolution panchromatic images alone are insufficient. Therefore, it is necessary to fuse them with multispectral images that contain spectral color information. Currently, there is a lack of research on the fusion method of BJ-3A satellite images. This article explores six traditional pixel-level fusion methods (HPF, HCS, wavelet, modified-IHS, PC, and Brovey) for fusing the panchromatic image and multispectral image of the BJ-3A satellite. The fusion results were analyzed qualitatively from two aspects: spatial detail enhancement capability and spectral fidelity. Five indicators, namely mean, standard deviation, entropy, correlation coefficient, and average gradient, were used for quantitative analysis. Finally, the fusion results were comprehensively evaluated from three aspects: spectral curves of ground objects, absolute error figure, and object-oriented classification effects. The findings of the research suggest that the fusion method known as HPF is the optimum and appropriate technique for fusing panchromatic and multispectral images obtained from BJ-3A. These results can be utilized as a guide for the implementation of BJ-3A panchromatic and multispectral data fusion in real-world scenarios.

RESUMEN

The rapid transition of agricultural systems substantially affects residential and industrial land use systems in rural areas, often generating spatiotemporal trade-offs between residential and industrial functions and producing considerable ecological impacts, which has thus far not been well understood. We conduct an indicator-based assessment of transitioning agriculture systems, and then links the transitioning agricultural systems to trade-offs between residential and industrial functions from 2005 to 2020 by using a case study-the metropolitan suburbs of Beijing, China. Also, the associated ecological impacts of the trade-offs are characterized based on the calculation of the ecological quality index (EQI) and ecological contribution rate. The results show that trade-offs between residential and industrial functions in the metropolitan suburbs have gradually adapted to the different agricultural systems in transition, which can be characterized by increasing industrial function as well as declining residential function, together with the diversification of land use into a mixed pattern. Additionally, along with the transitioning process comes a U shape of the ecological quality curve, which indicates that relentless industrial sprawl into regions where the agricultural system has a low capacity for technology, as well as decay in rural areas attributed to a rural exodus and industrial decline in semi-subsistence agricultural areas, even cause ecological degradation. In general, trade-offs between residential and industrial functions (especially for the non-agricultural production function) in rural areas could partially and temporally generate unfavorable ecological impacts, but it seems to be a favorable phenomenon to promote ecological quality in the long term. Therefore, to achieve rural sustainable planning, it is necessary for land use management to observe the trade-offs between residential and industrial functions while avoiding negative impacts, such as low-density land use patterns, disordered land use functions, and eco-environmental deterioration. Such effective strategies can contribute to the feasible implementation of policies aiming to achieve the compatible development of liveable residences, highly efficient industrial production, and eco-friendly operations in rural areas.

RESUMEN

To investigate the particle sources before, during, and after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic (WOP) in Beijing, ambient particles were passively collected from January to March 2022. The physicochemical properties including morphology, size, shape parameters, and elemental compositions were analyzed by the IntelliSEM EPAS (an advanced computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy [CCSEM] system). Using the user-defined classification rules, 37,174 individual particles were automatically classified into 27 major groups and further attributed to seven major sources based on the source-associated characteristics, including mineral dust, secondary aerosol, combustion/industry, carbonaceous particles, salt-related particles, biological particles, and fiber particles. Our results showed that mineral dust (66.5%), combustion/industry (12.6%), and secondary aerosol (6.3%) were the three major sources in a wide size range of 0.2-42.8 µm. During the Winter Olympic Games period, low emission of anthropogenic particles and favorable meteorological conditions contributed to significantly improved air quality. During the Winter Paralympic Games period, more particles sourced from the dust storm, secondary formed particles, and the adverse meteorological conditions resulted in relatively worse air quality. The secondary aerosol all decreased during the competition period, while increased during the non-competition period. Sulfate-related particles had explosive growth and further aggravate the pollution degree during the non-competition period, especially under adverse meteorological conditions. These results provide microscopic evidence revealing variations of physicochemical properties and sources in response to the control measures and meteorological conditions.

RESUMEN

Exploring the spatiotemporal variations of vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) and analyzing the relationships between NPP and its influencing factors are vital for ecological protection in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. In this study, we employed the CASA model in conjunction with spatiotemporal analysis techniques to estimate and analyze the spatiotemporal variations of NPP in BTH and different ecological function sub-regions over the past two decades. Subsequently, we established three scenarios (actual, climate-driven and land cover-driven) to assess the influencing factors and quantify their relative contributions. The results indicated that the overall NPP in BTH exhibited a discernible upward trend from 2000 to 2020, with a growth rate of 3.83 gC·m-2a-1. Furthermore, all six sub-regions exhibited an increase. The Bashang Plateau Ecological Protection Zone (BP) exhibited the highest growth rate (5.03 gC·m-2a-1), while the Low Plains Ecological Restoration Zone (LP) exhibited the lowest (2.07 gC·m-2a-1). Geographically, the stability of NPP exhibited a spatial pattern of gradual increase from west to east. Climate and land cover changes collectively increased NPP by 0.04 TgC·a-1 and 0.07 TgC·a-1, respectively, in the BTH region. Climate factors were found to have the greatest influence on NPP variations, contributing 40.49% across the BTH region. This influence exhibited a decreasing trend from northwest to southeast, with precipitation identified as the most influential climatic factor compared to temperature and solar radiation. Land cover change has profound effects on ecosystems, which is an important factor on NPP. From 2000 to 2020, 15.45% area of the BTH region underwent land cover type change, resulting in a total increase in NPP of 1.33 TgC. The conversion of grass into forest brought about the 0.89 TgC increase in NPP, which is the largest of all change types. In the area where land cover had undergone change, the land cover factor has been found to be the dominant factor influencing variations in NPP, with an average contribution of 49.37%. In contrast, in the south-central area where there has been no change in land cover, the residual factor has been identified as the most influential factor influencing variations in NPP. Our study highlights the important role of land cover change in influencing NPP variations in BTH. It also offers a novel approach to elucidating the influences of diverse factors on NPP, which is crucial for the scientific assessment of vegetation productivity and carbon sequestration capacity.

RESUMEN

Increasing socioecological systems (SESs) sustainability requires establishing a reasonable cross-regional social and ecological interaction. In this study, we examine how cross-regional ecological and social interactions affect synergistic effects. Using InVEST and correlation analysis with data from 2010 through 2020, we assessed ESs (i.e., water retention-WR, nutrient retention-NR, and carbon storage-CS) in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. A small watershed, a river network, and settlement development capacity are used to delineate ecological and social interactions units. Based on a Bayesian network model that considers population, economy, and spatial agglomeration patterns between social units, we assessed the potential for achieving a synergistic improvement of ESs and the driving forces behind them. The results show that ESs in the BTH region compete, only a small percentage (6.38%) shows synergetic improvement across CS, WR, and NR. It is beneficial for upstream watersheds to retain water and nutrients, but to maintain carbon storage they may sacrifice water retention. Upstream areas with less development and higher vegetation density have better ecosystem integrity of up- and down-stream watersheds, and can be enhanced with minimal human impact, as social interactions and settlement spatial structures influence ES synergies. There is a higher risk for ecological issues in downstream areas, but greater awareness and collaboration can lead to better ES synergies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rice vinegar is a popular cereal vinegar worldwide and is typically produced in an open environment, and the ecosystem of solid-state fermentation is complicated and robust. The present study aimed to reveal the shaping force of the establishment of the ecosystem of Beijing rice vinegar, the core function microbiota and their correlation with critical environmental factors. [Correction added after first online publication on 29 May 2024; the word "worldwide" has been removed from the first sentence under the section Background.] RESULTS: The experimental findings revealed the changes in environmental factors, major metabolites and microbial patterns during Beijing rice vinegar fermentation were obtained. The major metabolites accumulated at the middle and late acetic acid fermentation (AAF) periods. Principal coordinates and t-test analyses revealed the specific bacterial and fungal species at corresponding stages. Kosakonia, Methlobacterium, Sphingomonas, unidentified Rhizobiaceae, Pseudozyma and Saccharomycopsis dorminated during saccharification and alcohol fermentation and early AAF, whereas Lactococcus, Acetobacter, Rhodotorula and Kazachstania dominated the later AAF stages. Canonical correspondence analysis of environmental factors with core microbiota. Temperature and total acid were the most significant factors correlated with the SAF bacterial profile (Pediococcus, Weissella, Enterococcus and Kosakonia). Ethanol was the most significant factor between AAF1 and AAF3, and mainly affected Acetobacter and Lactobacillus. Conversely, ethanol was the most significant factor in the SAF, AAF1 and AAF3 fungi communities; typical microorganisms were Saccharomyces and Malassezia. Furthermore, the predicted phenotypes of bacteria and their response to environmental factors were evaluated. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the present study has provided insights into the process regulation of spontaneous fermentation and distinguished the key driving forces in the microbiota of Beijing rice vinegar fermentation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

Although machine learning methods have enabled considerable progress in air quality assessment, challenges persist regarding data privacy, cross-regional data processing, and model generalization. To address these issues, we introduce an advanced federated Bayesian network (FBN) approach. By integrating federated learning, adaptive optimization algorithms, and homomorphic encryption technologies, we substantially enhanced the efficiency and security of cross-regional air quality data processing. The novelty of this research lies in the improvements implemented in federated learning for air quality data analysis, particularly in distributed model training optimization and data consistency. Through the integration of adaptive structural modification strategies and simulated annealing immune optimization algorithms, we markedly enhanced the structural learning accuracy of the Bayesian network, resulting in a 20% improvement in prediction accuracy. Moreover, employing homomorphic encryption ensured data transmission security and confidentiality. In our Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei case study, our method demonstrated a 15% improvement in air quality classification accuracy compared to conventional methods and exhibited superior interpretability in analyzing environmental factor interactions. We quantified complex air pollution patterns across regions and found that a 30% fluctuation in the air quality index correlated with NO2 concentrations. We also observed a moderate positive correlation between specific pollutant indicators in Hebei Province and Tianjin and changes in air quality. Additionally, the FBN exhibited better operational efficiency and data confidentiality than other machine learning models in handling large-scale and multisource environmental data. Our FBN approach presents a novel perspective for environmental monitoring and assessment, vital for understanding complex air pollution patterns and formulating future ecological protection policies.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and summarize the medical security situation of the snowmobile, sled, and steel frame snowmobile tracks at the National Sliding Centre, and to provide experience for future event hosting and medical security work for mass ice and snow sports. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of injuries and treatment of athletes participating in the International Training Week and World Cup for Ski, Sled, and Steel Frame Ski from October to November 2021(hereinafter referred to as "International Training Week"), as well as the Ski, Sled, and Steel Frame Ski events at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022 (hereinafter referred to as the "Beijing Winter Olympics"). We referred to and drew on the "Medical Security Standards for Winter Snow Sports" to develop specific classification standards for analyzing injured areas, types of injuries, and accident locations. RESULTS: A total of 743 athletes participated in the International Training Week and the Beijing Winter Olympics. During the competition, there were 58 incidents of overturning, prying, and collision, of which 28 (28 athletes) were injured, accounting for 48.3% of the total accidents and 3.8% of the total number of athletes. Among them, there were 9 males (32.1%) and 19 females (67.9%), with an average age of (26.3 ± 4.7) years. Among the 28 injured athletes, 20 cases (71.4%) received on-site treatment for Class Ⅰ injuries, while 8 cases (28.6%) had more severe injuries, including Class Ⅱ injuries (7 cases) and Class Ⅲ injuries (1 case), which were referred to designated hospitals for further treatment. Among the 28 injured athletes, 3 cases (10.7%) experienced multiple injuries, including 2 cases of 2 injuries and 1 case of 3 injuries. The most common injuries were in the ankle and toes (10/32, 31.3%). Out of 28 injured athletes, one (3.6%) experienced two types of injuries simultaneously, with joint and/or ligament injuries being the most common (11/29, 37.9%). The most accident prone point on the track was the ninth curve (18/58, 31.0%). CONCLUSION: Through the analysis and summary of medical security work, it can provide better experience and reference for the future development of snowmobile, sled, and steel frame snowmobile sports in China, making the National Snowy and Ski Center truly a sustainable Olympic heritage.

RESUMEN

Tuberculosis remains a serious threat to human health as an infectious disease in Mexico. Data about the genotypes of circulating Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates (MTB) in the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico are scarce. We aimed to determine the genotypes of circulating MTB belonging to the Beijing lineage recovered from patients in the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. A total of 406 MTB isolates from this state were genotyped using the spoligotyping method and 18-locus MIRU-VNTR. Lineage classification and MTB transmission analysis were performed. Based on the spoligotyping analysis, we found 24 strains belonging to the Beijing genotype that were characterized phylogenetically. The MIRUs showed greater discriminatory power than the standard RFLP-IS6110 method; therefore, the greatest allelic diversity among the Beijing strains was observed with MIRU10, MIRU31, MIRU39, MRU40, and MIRU 26. MVLA analysis showed a profile variation between Beijing and non-Beijing strains. The minimum spanning tree (MST) showed that 79% (19) of the strains are related. All Beijing strains exhibited the deletion of region TbD1, which is a characteristic of modern strains. The application of spoligotyping and MIRU-VNTR-18 methods together proved to be more sensitive, discriminatory, and rapid than the standard method for the epidemiological analysis of Mycobacterium Beijing isolates. This study is one of the first to describe the genomic diversity of M. Beijing in the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

RESUMEN

More than a quarter of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, only about 10% of those infected develop active TB. This indicates a key role for innate immunity in limiting M. tuberculosis replication. Most often, bacteria can regulate the expression of host-specific molecules and weaken host immunity. OBJECTIVE: To use a biological model, in order to determine significant molecular immunohistochemical markers characterizing the virulence of the "Buryat" and "Omsk" subtypes of the M. tuberculosis Beijing genotype in lung tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Lung samples of the C57BL/6 male mice were obtained during experimental infection with M. tuberculosis strains: the reference laboratory strain H37Rv, multidrug-resistant clinical strains 396 (highly lethal and hypervirulent «Buryat¼ genotype Beijing 14717-15) and 6691 (low-lethal and low-virulent "Omsk" genotype Beijing 1071-32) on days 14, 21, 60 and 120. They were studied by histological and immunohistochemical methods. The relative areas of expression of IL-6, IL-12A, iNOS, and TNF-α in the lung tissue of model animals were established. RESULTS: A study of strain 396 showed that both disease progression and damage to lung tissue are associated with a highly reactive immune response and increased synthesis of iNOS and strain characteristics that block the production of TNF-α. On the contrary, for strain 6691 a low reactivity of the immune response was revealed, with statistically significantly lower values of the relative area of expression of NOS and TNF-α during all observation periods (days 14-120). All animals that survived to day 120 showed a similar morphological picture with differences in cytokine levels, indicating a nonlinear relationship between proinflammatory factors and the damage substratum. CONCLUSION: The progression of the disease and damage of lung tissue were associated with a highly reactive immune response and increased synthesis of iNOS, strain properties that block the TNF-α production. Thus, iNOS and TNF-α can act as molecular markers characterizing the virulence of the "Buryat" and "Omsk" subtypes of M. tuberculosis in lung tissue.

RESUMEN

China experienced a severe influenza season that began at the end of February 2023. The aim of this post hoc analysis was to investigate the clinical, epidemiological, and genomic features of this outbreak in Beijing. The number of cases increased rapidly from the end of February and reached its peak in March, with 7262 confirmed cases included in this study. The median age was 33 years, and 50.3% of them were male. The average daily positive rate reached 69% during the peak period. The instantaneous reproduction number (Rt) showed a median of 2.1, exceeded 2.5 initially, and remaining above 1 for the following month. The most common symptoms were fever (75.0%), cough (51.0%), and expectoration (42.9%), with a median body temperature of 38.5°C (interquartile range 38-39). Eight clinical symptoms were more likely to be observed in cases with fever, with odds ratio greater than 1. Viral shedding time ranged from 3 to 25 days, with median of 7.5 days. The circulating viruses in Beijing mainly included H1N1pdm09 (clades 5a.2a and 5a.2a.1), following with H3N2 (clade 2a.2a.3a.1). The descriptive study suggests that influenza viruses in this influenza season had a higher transmissibility and longer shedding duration, with fever being the most common symptom.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: . The Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype is globally spread lineage with important medical properties that however vary among its subtypes. M. tuberculosis Beijing 14717-15-cluster was recently discovered as both multidrug-resistant, hypervirulent, and highly-lethal strain circulating in the Far Eastern region of Russia. Here, we aimed to analyze its pathogenomic features and phylogeographic pattern. RESULTS: . The study collection included M. tuberculosis DNA collected between 1996 and 2020 in different world regions. The bacterial DNA was subjected to genotyping and whole genome sequencing followed by bioinformatics and phylogenetic analysis. The PCR-based assay to detect specific SNPs of the Beijing 14717-15-cluster was developed and used for its screening in the global collections. Phylogenomic and phylogeographic analysis confirmed endemic prevalence of the Beijing 14717-15-cluster in the Asian part of Russia, and distant common ancestor with isolates from Korea (> 115 SNPs). The Beijing 14717-15-cluster isolates had two common resistance mutations RpsL Lys88Arg and KatG Ser315Thr and belonged to spoligotype SIT269. The Russian isolates of this cluster were from the Asian Russia while 4 isolates were from the Netherlands and Spain. The cluster-specific SNPs that significantly affect the protein function were identified in silico in genes within different categories (lipid metabolism, regulatory proteins, intermediary metabolism and respiration, PE/PPE, cell wall and cell processes). CONCLUSIONS: . We developed a simple method based on real-time PCR to detect clinically significant MDR and hypervirulent Beijing 14717-15-cluster. Most of the identified cluster-specific mutations were previously unreported and could potentially be associated with increased pathogenic properties of this hypervirulent M. tuberculosis strain. Further experimental study to assess the pathobiological role of these mutations is warranted.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a severe public health problem globally. Previous studies have revealed insufficient and inconsistent associations between air pollutants, meteorological factors and TB cases. Yet few studies have examined the associations between air pollutants, meteorological factors and TB cases in Beijing. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of air pollutants and meteorological factors on TB in Beijing, and to provide novel insights into public health managers to formulate control strategies of TB. METHODS: Data on the daily case of TB in Beijing during 2014-2020 were obtained from Chinese tuberculosis information management system. Concurrent data on the daily PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO and O3, were obtained from the online publication platform of the Chinese National Environmental Monitoring Center. Daily average temperature, average wind speed, relative humidity, sunshine duration and total precipitation were collected from the China Meteorological Science Data Sharing Service System. A distributed lag non-linear model was fitted to identify the non-linear exposure-response relationship and the lag effects between air pollutions, meteorological factors and TB cases in Beijing. RESULTS: In the single-factor model, the excess risk (ER) of TB was significantly positively associated with every 10 µg/m3 increase in NO2 in lag 1 week (ER: 1.3%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.4%, 2.3%) and every 0.1 m/s increase in average wind speed in lag 5 weeks (ER: 0.3%; 95% CI: 0.1%, 0.5%), and was negatively associated with every 10 µg/m3 increase in O3 in lag 1 week (ER: -1.2%; 95% CI: -1.8%, -0.5%), every 5 °C increase in average temperature (ER: -1.7%; 95% CI: -2.9%, -0.4%) and every 10% increase in average relative humidity (ER: -0.4%; 95% CI: -0.8%, -0.1%) in lag 10 weeks, respectively. In the multi-factor model, the lag effects between TB cases and air pollutants, meteorological factors were similar. The subgroup analysis suggests that the effects of NO2, O3, average wind speed and relative humidity on TB were greater in male or labor age subgroup, while the effect of CO was greater in the elderly. In addition, no significant associations were found between PM2.5, SO2, sunshine duration and TB cases. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide a better understanding of air pollutants and meteorological factors driving tuberculosis occurrence in Beijing, which enhances the capacity of public health manager to target early warning and disease control policy-making.

RESUMEN

Runs of homozygosity (ROHs) has become an effective method for analysing inbreeding in livestock populations. Moreover, ROHs is well-suited to detect signatures of selection via ROH islands. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and distribution of ROHs, compare the genomic inbreeding coefficients and identify the genomic regions with high ROH frequencies in different Beijing-You chicken (BY) populations, including a random conservation population (BY_R), a pedigree conservation population (BY_P), and a commercial population obtained from the market (BY_C). Among them, BY_R in 2010 and 2019 were BY_R1 and BY_R2 respectively. A total of 27 916 ROHs were identified. The average number of ROHs per individual across the three BY populations ranged from 213 (BY_P) to 161 (BY_C), and the average length of ROHs ranged from 0.432 Mb (BY_R2) to 0.451 Mb (BY_P). The highest inbreeding coefficient calculated based on ROHs (FROH ) was 0.1 in BY_P, whereas the lowest FROH was 0.0743 in BY_C. In addition, the inbreeding coefficient of BY_R2 (FROH  = 0.0798) was higher than that of BY_R1 (FROH  = 0.0579). Furthermore, the highest proportion of long ROH fragments (>4 Mb) was observed in BY_P and BY_C. This study showed the top 10 ROH islands of each population, and these ROH islands harboured 53 genes, some of which were related to limb development, body size and immune response. These findings contribute to the understanding of genetic diversity and population demography, and might help improve breeding and conservation strategies for BY populations.

RESUMEN

Increasing intramuscular fat (IMF) content can enhance the sensory quality of meat, including tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and color. Genome-wide association study and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis were used to identify candidate IMF genes in Beijing Black pigs, a popular species among consumers in northern China. Two and three single nucleotide polymorphisms were significantly associated with IMF in SSC13 and SSC15 respectively. Solute carrier family 4 member 7 (SLC4A7) on SSC13 and insulin induced gene 2 (INSIG2), coiled-coil domain containing 93 (CCDC93), and diazepam binding inhibitor acyl-CoA binding protein (DBI) on SSC15 are good candidate genes in this population. Furthermore, RNA-seq analysis was performed between high and low IMF groups, and 534 differentially expressed genes were identified. In addition, based on differentially expressed genes, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and FoxO signaling pathway pathways might contribute to IMF. Moreover, the DBI gene was identified as a candidate for IMF both by genome-wide association study and RNA-seq analysis, suggesting that it might be a crucial candidate gene for influencing IMF in Beijing Black pigs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Obesity is the most serious global epidemic and body composition is the main indicator to evaluate obesity. This study aimed to investigate the changing trends of body composition by age and gender in Beijing adults aged 20-60 years and explore the distribution of obesity rates in different age groups of both sexes under different evaluation criteria. METHODS: A total of 24,948 adults aged 20-60 years in Beijing, including 10,225 males and 14,192 females, were included, divided into four age groups (20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and ≥ 50 years) with each decade of age as an age group. Body composition indicators (BMI, fat mass, BF%, muscle mass, visceral fat area, and WHR) were measured in all subjects. RESULTS: BMI and total fat mass peaked in males aged 40-49 years (BMI = 25.75 kg/m2, total fat mass = 17.70 kg). Female BMI, fat mass and BF% all increased significantly with age (p < 0.01). Total muscle peaked in males aged 30-39 years and decreased significantly thereafter (p < 0.0001). Visceral fat area and WHR increased significantly with age in both sexes (p < 0.0001). Age was significantly positively correlated with BMI, BF%, fat mass, WHR, and visceral fat area in both sexes (p < 0.0001), and age was negatively correlated with muscle mass in males (standard ß = - 0.14, p < 0.0001) while positive in female (standard ß = 0.05, p < 0.0001). Under the BMI criterion, the obesity rate peaked at 27.33% in males at the age of 20-29 years. Under the BF% criterion, the obesity rate peaked at 17.41% in males at the age of 30-39 years, and increased in females with age. The central obesity rate of both sexes increased with age under the criteria of WHR and visceral fat area. CONCLUSION: The results of this study reveal that age- and sex-related patterns of body composition and obesity change among Beijing adults aged 20-60 years may differ across age groups and that such patterns of change should be considered when developing public health strategies.
