BACKGROUND: Advances in treatment could mitigate the expected adverse changes in the body composition of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). OBJECTIVES: To examine the evolution of weight status and body composition and their association with glycaemic control and partial clinical remission in youth with T1D. METHODS: Ninety-nine participants with T1D (median age 9.5 years [interquartile range 7.3, 12.9], 59.6% boys) were longitudinally followed for 3 years since diagnosis. Data at seven pre-determined time points were extracted from medical files. Outcome measures included body mass index (BMI) z-scores, muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) z-scores, haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, continuous glucose monitoring metrics, and insulin dose-adjusted HbA1c (IDAA1c) levels. RESULTS: The BMI z-scores increased significantly (p < 0.001) for both sexes, with no significant change in MFR z-scores over time. The girls had higher BMI z-scores (p < 0.001) and lower MFR z-scores than the boys (p = 0.016). The mean HbA1c levels decreased during the first month and at 3 months since diagnosis (p < 0.001), then plateaued and achieved a median overall HbA1c of 7.1% for the entire cohort. At 12 months, 37 participants (37.6%) were in partial clinical remission, as evidenced by IDAA1c ≤ 9. The odds of partial clinical remission at 2 years increased by 2.1-fold for each standard deviation increase in the MFR z-score (p < 0.001). Higher MFR z-scores were associated with better metabolic control. CONCLUSIONS: Integration of body composition assessments could mitigate adverse body changes in paediatric patients with T1D.

Cancer cachexia is a disorder that affects patient outcomes. The present study prospectively evaluated the prognostic value of the cachexia index (CXI) in elderly patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). We prospectively analyzed 51 elderly patients who were diagnosed with NHL at our institution. CXI was calculated as follows: CXI = SMI × Alb/NLR (SMI: skeletal muscle index, Alb: serum albumin, NLR: neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio). SMI was measured by a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using the InBody 720. We determined the sex-specific cutoff values of the CXI by a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and divided all patients into low- and high-CXI groups. The median age at the diagnosis was 78 years (60-93 years), and 28 (55%) were male. The histologic subtypes were B-cell lymphoma in 49 patients and T-cell lymphoma in 2. Twenty-eight (55%) patients were categorized into the high-CXI group, and 23 (45%) were categorized into the low-CXI group. The overall survival (OS) in the low-CXI group was significantly shorter than that in the high-CXI group (3-year OS, 70.4% vs. 95.7%, p = 0.007). Among 23 patients with DLBCL, patients with low-CXI had shorter OS than those with high-CXI (3-year OS, 55.6% vs. 92.9%, p = 0.008). On the other hand, sarcopenia had less impact on the clinical outcome of DLBCL patients. Low-CXI was associated with poor outcomes in elderly NHL and the CXI may be a clinical useful index for predicting prognosis. Further large prospective studies are needed to verify this conclusion.

Body composition and phase angle (PhA) have been used to predict mortality in multiple diseases. However, little has been studied regarding segmental measurements, which could potentially help assess subtle changes in specific tissue segments. This study aimed to identify the total PhA cut-off point associated with mortality risk and changes in body composition within a week of hospitalisation in non-critical hospitalised patients with COVID-19. A cohort study was conducted where patients underwent to a complete nutritional assessment upon admission and after seven days, and followed up until hospital discharge or death. A receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to determine the PhA cut-off point, and the Kaplan­Meier estimator was used to determine survival analysis. Segmental and complete body compositions on admission and after 7 d were compared. We included 110 patients (60 men) with a mean age of 50·5 ± 15·0 years and a median BMI of 28·5 (IQR, 25·6­33·5) kg/m2. The median length of hospital stay was 6 (IQR, 4­9) d, and the mortality rate was 13·6 %. The PhA cut-off point obtained was 4°, with significant differences in the survival rate (P < 0·001) and mortality (HR = 5·81, 95 % CI: 1·80, 18·67, P = 0·003). Segmental and whole-body compositions were negatively affected within one week of hospitalisation, with changes in the approach by the graphical method in both sexes. Nutritional status deteriorates within a week of hospitalisation. PhA < 4° is strongly associated with increased mortality in non-critical hospitalised patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Previous adult studies have yielded conflicting results regarding whether the presence (D +) or absence (D-) of peritoneal dialysate affects the accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measurements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the accuracy of BIA data varies between D + and D- measurements in children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited chronic kidney disease stage 5 patients aged 3 to 18 years who received peritoneal dialysis. Body composition was assessed by multifrequency BIA, and values were compared between D + and D- measurements using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: Fifty paired BIA measurements were collected from 18 patients with a mean age of 13.6 ± 4.1 years and a mean dialysate fill volume of 1,006 ± 239.7 ml/m2. Sixteen out of 17 BIA parameters (94.1%) exhibited excellent correlations between D + and D- measurements (ICC values = 0.954, 0.998). There was a trend of increased fluid status, including extracellular water, edema index, and overhydration, in D + measurements, with mean differences (95% CIs) of 0.5 (0.4, 0.6) L, 0.002 (0.001, 0.002), and 0.1 (0.1, 0.2) L, respectively. Soft lean mass and fat-free mass were higher in D + measurements, with mean differences (95% CIs) of 1.4 (1.2, 1.6), and 1.6 (1.4, 1.8) kg, respectively. In addition, patients older than 10 years had a stronger correlation between D + and D- measurements than younger patients. CONCLUSIONS: A total of 94.1% of BIA parameters exhibited excellent correlations between D + and D- measurements, especially patients older than 10 years. We recommend that BIA measurements be collected from children regardless of the presence of peritoneal dialysate.

The objectives of this study were to develop age- and sex-specific reference percentiles for fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) in adolescents aged 14 to 19 years and to determine differences in overweight/obesity classification by FMI and body mass index (BMI). The EVA4YOU study is a single-center cross-sectional study conducted in western Austria. Cardiovascular risks including anthropometric measurements and bioelectrical impedance analysis were assessed in adolescents (mean age 17 years). FMI and FFMI were calculated as the ratio of fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) to the square of height and compared to study population-specific BMI percentiles. One thousand four hundred twenty-two adolescents were included in the analysis. Girls had a significantly higher mean FM and FMI and a significantly lower mean FFM, FFMI (p < 0.001, each), and mean BMI (p = 0.020) than boys. Body composition classification by FMI and BMI percentiles shows a concordance for the < 75th and > 97th percentile, but a significant difference in percentile rank classifications between these two cut-off values (all p < 0.05). Based on FMI, 15.5% (221/1422) of the whole population and 29.4% (92/313) of those between the 75th and 97th percentiles are classified one category higher or lower than those assigned by BMI. CONCLUSION:  Classification of normal or pathologic body composition based on BMI and FMI shows good accordance in the clearly normal or pathologic range. In an intermediate range, FMI reclassifies categories based on BMI in more than a quarter of adolescents. Cut-off values to differentiate normal from pathologic FMI values on a biological basis are needed. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study is registered at www. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with major risk factors including unhealthy diets, harmful behaviors, and obesity. Obesity in children and adolescents is a key risk factor for later NCDs, which is commonly measured by Body Mass Index (BMI). • BMI can be misleading as it doesn't distinguish between fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM), leading to potential misclassification of obesity in children. Previous studies have already suggested the use of the Fat Mass Index (FMI) and Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) as a more accurate measures of body composition. WHAT IS NEW: • This study adds the first age- and sex-specific reference values for FMI and FFMI in Austrian adolescents using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as a safe and secure measurement method of a large representative cohort. • We found percentile misclassification between BMI and FMI when categorizing for obesity, especially in intermediate categories of body composition. Furthermore, when comparing the new reference values for FMI and FFMI to existing ones from the US, UK, and Germany we could show a good alignment within the European cohorts and major differences with American values, indicating and confirming the difference of FMI and FFMI for different populations of different ethnical background, living on different continents.

The pharmacodynamics in patients with high body fat percentage might be similar to those in obese patients. This randomised controlled clinical trial observed the effects of rocuronium in patients with different percent body fats (PBFs). Fifty-four patients who underwent elective urological or pelvic surgery under general anaesthesia at Shanghai General Hospital were included in the present study; 51 patients were included for data analysis. Patients with normal PBF (<25%) were given a single dose of rocuronium calculated based on total body weight (N-TBW, control group). Patients with a higher PBF (≥25%) were given a single dose of rocuronium calculated based on total body weight (H-TBW). Patients with higher PBF and rocuronium were dosed based on fat-free mass (H-FFM). A train of four (TOF)-Watch acceleromyography monitor was used to measure the effects of the rocuronium. H-TBW (91.9 ± 28.8 s) had significantly shorter onset time than N-TBW and H-FFM (p = 0.003). H-TBW had significantly longer clinical duration time and pharmacological duration time than the other groups (p = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively); the TOF ratio0.25-0.9 time was significantly different among the three groups (p = 0.005). There were no significant differences in the recovery time (p = 0.103) or recovery index (p = 0.159) among the three groups. The effects of rocuronium dosed based on FFM in patients with high PBFs are similar to those in normal patients. A single dose of rocuronium calculated based on TBW might shorten the onset time, prolong the clinical and pharmacological duration times, and prolong the recovery time.

AIM: Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is a common syndrome in patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD) and is associated with poor prognosis. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)-derived phase angle (PA) is useful for predicting PEW, but sex and age need to be considered. We aimed to reveal sex-specific cut-off values of PA predicting PEW in HD patients aged ≥65. METHODS: This two-centre retrospective cohort study included patients on HD who underwent BIA. PEW was detected using the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) criteria as a reference. The PA was measured using a multifrequency bioimpedance device. Sex-specific cut-off values of PA predicting PEW were detected by receiver-operator characteristic analysis. We investigated the association between PEW determined using sex-specific cut-off values for PA and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: This study included 274 patients undergoing HD, with a median age of 75 (70-80) years, mean PA of 3.8 ± 1.1° and PEW of 43%. Over a median follow-up duration of 1095 (400-1095) days, 111 patients died. Cut-off values of PA predicting PEW were as follows: female, 3.00° (sensitivity, 87.3%; specificity, 77.5%), and male, 3.84° (sensitivity, 77.6%; specificity, 71.4%). The kappa coefficient between sex-specific cut-off values of the PA and ISRNM criteria had a moderate coincidence level of 0.55. PEW detected by PA was independently associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 2.40; 95% confidence interval: 1.51-3.85; p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Sex-specific cut-off values for PA in older HD patients may be useful as a screening tool for predicting PEW and mortality.

PURPOSE: Lateral sleep position has a significant beneficial effect on the severity of Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central sleep apnea (CSR-CSA) in patients with heart failure (HF). We hypothesized that a reduction in rostral fluid shift from the legs in this position compared with the supine position may contribute to this effect. METHODS: In patients with CSR-CSA and an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15/h (by standard polysomnography), uncalibrated leg fluid volume was measured in the supine, left lateral decubitus, and right lateral decubitus positions (in-laboratory assessment). The correlation between postural changes in fluid volume and corresponding changes in AHI was evaluated. Since there was no difference in both leg fluid volume and AHI between the right and left positions, measurements in these two conditions were combined into a single lateral position. RESULTS: In 18 patients with CSR-CSA, leg fluid volume increased by 2.7 ± 3.1% (p = 0.002) in the lateral position compared to the supine position, while AHI decreased by 46 ± 20% (p < 0.0001) with the same postural change. The correlation between postural changes in AHI and leg fluid volume was 0.22 (p = 0.42). Changes in leg fluid volume were a slow phenomenon, whereas changes in CSR-CSA severity were almost synchronous with changes in posture. CONCLUSION: Lateral position causes a reduction in rostral fluid shift compared to the supine position, but this change does not correlate with the corresponding change in CSR-CSA severity. The two changes occur on different time scales. These findings question the role of postural changes in rostral fluid shift as a determinant of corresponding changes in CSR-CSA severity.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the association between phase angle (PA) and a composite adverse outcome in patients requiring off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). DESIGN: A prospective observational study. SETTING: High-volume single center. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 229 adult patients who underwent OPCAB from May 2019 to October 2020. INTERVENTIONS: Each patient underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis, including PA assessment before surgery (PApre), immediately postoperatively (PApost), and 1 day postoperatively (PAPOD1), using an Inbody S10. Frailty index and nutritional assessments also were obtained before surgery. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Patient outcomes were assessed using a composite adverse outcome comprising death, myocardial infarction, revascularization, new-onset atrial fibrillation, acute kidney injury, stroke, postoperative pulmonary complications, wound complications, sepsis, reoperation, and/or delirium occurring during hospitalization and over the following year. Patients for whom composite adverse outcomes were reported had lower PApre than those without complications (5.4 ± 0.9 v 6.0 ± 0.9, p < 0.001). The PA was significantly associated with in-hospital and 1-year composite postoperative outcomes. The odds ratios (OR, [95% confidence interval]) for PApre by time were in-hospital complications (0.435 [0.314, 0.604], p < 0.001; 1-year complications: 0.459 [0.330, 0.638], p < 0.001) and PAPOD1 (OR, in-hospital complications: 0.400 [0.277, 0.576], 1-year complications: 0.429 [0.298, 0.619], p < 0.001). The PApre was significantly associated with days alive and out of hospital until 1 year. The cut-off value of PApre for optimal prediction of in-hospital complications was 6.0 (area under the curve: 0.691 [0.623-0.758], p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Low PA as an indicator of frailty is associated with adverse postoperative outcomes after OPCAB. Low PA may be employed as a noninvasive and practical tool for the prediction of prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc degeneration and sarcopenia are both age-related diseases without effective treatments. Their comorbidities may worsen the prognosis, and further studies on interaction and therapy are needed. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in intervertebral disc degeneration, and to compare the characteristics of intervertebral disc degeneration with and without sarcopenia and effects of interferential current. METHODS: One hundred twenty disc degeneration patients were included from 2021 to 2022 in a single institute. Medical records, examination results and radiological reports were reviewed. Patients with sarcopenia were screened and grouped according to Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. VAS, ODI, SARC-F, SMI, gait speed (GS), grip strength, disc Pfirrmann grading, standard cross-sectional area (SCSA), degree of fatty infiltration (DFF), and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) were assessed before and after treatment. RESULTS: The prevalence of sarcopenia in intervertebral disc degeneration was 28.3%. The difference of VAS, ODI, disc Pfirrmann grading, SCSA, DFF and NCV between two groups were significant before intervention (P < 0.05), SCSA and DFF were related to the degree of disc degeneration. The improvement of SMI, GS, grip strength, VAS, SARC-F and ODI in intervertebral disc degeneration with sarcopenia group was significant after intervention, as well as SMI, GS, grip strength, VAS and ODI in those without sarcopenia (P < 0.05). The improvement of grip strength, GS, ODI and SARC-F in intervertebral disc degeneration with sarcopenia group were greater than the one without sarcopenia (P < 0.05), whereas there was no significance in improvement degree of other indicators between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of sarcopenia was high in intervertebral disc degeneration, and paravertebral muscles degeneration correlated with the degree of disc degeneration. Compared to those without sarcopenia, intervertebral disc degeneration patients with sarcopenia have more severe pain, poorer mobility and neurological function. Interferential current is effective in intervertebral disc degeneration patients and sarcopenia patients.

BACKGROUND: Few reports have performed a prognostic analysis based on bioelectrical impedance analysis in patients with radical resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and its usefulness in prognostic analysis remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate body composition changes in patients undergoing radical resection for PDAC and analyze its impact on prognosis. METHODS: The medical records of radical resection for patients with PDAC were retrospectively reviewed, and the parameters of body composition, including body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass (BFM), and extracellular water-total body water ratio, from preoperatively to 12 months postoperatively, for each surgical procedure were measured based on direct segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis with an InBody 770 (InBody Inc., Tokyo, Japan) device. The clinicopathological and prognostic factors were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 79 patients who underwent radical resection for PDAC, 36 (46%), 7 (8%), and 36 (46%) underwent pancreatoduodenectomy, total pancreatectomy, and distal pancreatectomy, respectively. The multivariate overall survival analysis demonstrated that BFM loss percentage at 1 month postoperatively ≧14% (p = 0.021), lymph node metastasis (p = 0.014), and non-adjuvant chemotherapy (p <  0.001) were independent poor prognostic factors. Multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative BFM < 12 kg and preoperative albumin < 3.5 g/dL were independently associated with BFM loss percentage at 1 month postoperatively ≧14% (p = 0.021 and p = 0.047, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Loss of BFM in the early postoperative period may have a poor prognosis in radical resection of PDAC.

BACKGROUND: Plasma volume (PV) calculated from hematocrit and body weight has applications in cardiovascular disease. The current study investigated the validity of the calculated PV for predicting volume overload and its prognostic utility in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-four HD patients were prospectively enrolled, and their actual PV (aPV) and relative PV status (PVS) were calculated. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) with assessment of and total body water (TBW), intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), and overhydration (OH) and routine blood examinations were performed before dialysis. A second cohort of 164 HD patients was retrospectively enrolled to evaluate the relationship between the calculated PVS and the outcome, with an endpoint of all-cause mortality. RESULTS: aPV was significantly associated with TBW, ICW, ECW, OH, and ECW/TBW (all p < 0.001), and most strongly with ECW (r = 0.83). aPV predicted the extent of volume overload with an AUC of 0.770 (p < 0.001), but PVS did not (AUC = 0.617, p = 0.091). Median follow-up time was 53 months, during the course of which 60 (36.58%) patients died. Values for PVS (12.94 ± 10.87% vs. 7.45 ± 5.90%, p = 0.024) and time-averaged PVS (12.83 ± 11.20 vs. 6.78 ± 6.22%, p < 0.001) were significantly increased in patients who died relative to those who survived. A value of time-averaged PVS >8.72% was significantly associated with an increased incidence of all-cause mortality (HR = 2.48, p = 0.0023). CONCLUSIONS: aPV was most strongly associated with ECW measured using BIA. HD patients with higher time-averaged PVS had a higher rate of all-cause mortality.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease, in which permanent joint deformation is largely preventable with the timely introduction of appropriate treatment strategies. However, there is no consensus for patients with RA to monitor their progress and communicate it to the rheumatologist till the condition progresses to remission. In response to this unmet need, we proposed the design of a self-measuring device based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for regular monitoring of inflammation levels. Twenty joints of both hands were measured to monitor trends in inflammation levels. Three electrodes were used to measure two joints of each finger. A central electrode was used for two consecutive measurements. A suitable form factor for the device was proposed for the vertical placement of the hand. To ensure the stability of measurements, an air cushion was incorporated into the back of the hand, hand containers were designed on both sides, and a mobile application was designed. We conducted a convergence-assessment experiment with five air pressures to validate the consistency and convergence of bioimpedance measurements. A heuristic evaluation of the usability around the product and mobile application was conducted in parallel by six subject matter experts and validated the design. This study underscores the significance of considering patients' disease activity during intervals between hospital visits and introduces a novel approach to self-RA care.

Background: Reliable and accurate estimates of body composition are essential when studying the various health correlates of disease. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an affordable and feasible body composition assessment technique for clinical and field settings. Total body water (TBW) and hence fat-free mass is estimated by predictive regression algorithms using anthropometric measurements plus the resistance index. Aim: The study aimed to develop a BIA prediction equation for TBW in children in Myanmar using the deuterium dilution technique as the reference method. Methods: The study design was cross-sectional in a school setting with convenience sampling of participants. One hundred and two healthy children (57 boys and 45 girls) with aged 4 and 8 years participated; randomly divided into the prediction group (29 boys and 22 girls) and cross-validation group (28 boys and 23 girls). Whole-body impedance, anthropometric and TBW (by D2O dilution) measurements. The prediction equation was cross-validated using a split-group design and compared to published equations for contemporaneous populations. Results: TBW could be predicted by the following equation. TBW = 0.4597 * Weight (kg) + 0.1564 * Impedance index + 0.6075 (R2 = 0.891, P < 0.0001) with a correlation coefficient of 0.942 and limits of agreement of 0.98 kg TBW on cross-validation. Conclusions: This equation can be used to predict body composition in young (aged 4-8 years) children in Myanmar but because the age range of the participants in the present study was relatively narrow, more research in different age groups is required to establish its broader applicability.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters, including the extracellular water-to-total body water ratio (ECW/TBW), and the activities of daily living (ADL) improvement, in patients who experienced acute stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 307 patients (mean age, 72 years; 39 % female) who experienced acute stroke and were admitted to the stroke unit of the Nippon Medical School Hospital (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan) between April 2021 and March 2022. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) was assessed at initial rehabilitation and discharge, and FIM effectiveness was calculated as ADL improvement in the participating acute care hospitals. BIA markers included the skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), phase angle (PhA), and ECW/TBW. Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate the relationship between the FIM effectiveness and each BIA marker. RESULTS: The mean (±SD) FIM effectiveness was 0.45 ± 0.36. The proportions of low SMI (male, <7.0 kg/m2; female, <5.7 kg/m2) and low PhA (male <5.36 degrees, female <3.85 degrees), were 48.9 % and 43.3 %, respectively. In addition, the proportions of of low (<0.36), normal (0.36-0.40), and high (>0.4) ECW/TBW ratios were 1.3 %, 78.5 %, and 20.2 %, respectively. After adjustments for demographic and clinical variables, low PhA, low ECW/TBW, and high ECW/TBW were all significantly associated with FIM effectiveness (P < 0.05), with ß coefficients of -0.126, -0.089, and -0.117, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Low and High ECW/TBW and low PhA levels were negatively correlated with improvements in ADL. The ECW/TBW ratio may be an additional indicator of rehabilitation trainability in patients who experience acute stroke.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is considered one of the most common diseases that occur during pregnancy. In addition to increasing the risk of numerous complications throughout gestation, it is also believed to have a long-term potential to impact the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease for the mother and her offspring. While there are clear guidelines for healthy weight gain in pregnancy depending on pre-pregnancy BMI, as well as dietary and training recommendations to achieve this, an increasing number of women are experiencing excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG). Such patients have a higher risk of developing GDM and gestational hypertension, as well as requiring caesarian delivery. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) is a glycoprotein that seems to play an important role in glucose metabolism, and inhibition of its activity positively affects glucose regulation. The aim of our study was to compare DPP-4 concentrations in patients with GDM and EGWG with healthy women. DPP-4 levels were assessed in serum and urine samples collected on the day of delivery. The bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method was also used to analyze the body composition of patients on the second day of the postpartum period. DPP-4 serum concentrations were significantly higher in patients in the GDM and EGWG groups compared to healthy women. Urinary DPP-4 concentrations were significantly higher in the control and GDM groups than in the EGWG group. Serum DPP-4 levels were positively correlated with BMI measured before pregnancy, on the delivery day, and in the early postpartum period, among other factors. According to our knowledge, this is the first study to determine DPP-4 levels in EGWG patients. DPP-4 may be related to the occurrence of GDM and EGWG; however, this requires further research.

The simplification of diagnostic criteria is critical to promoting interventions for sarcopenia. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sarcopenia and bone mass [measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)], as well as to identify new indicators associated with this disease. Basic interviews and measurement of physical function were performed on 474 community-dwelling older adults (aged 77.1 ±â€…7.6 years), including older adult patients with sarcopenia, in Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture. The findings led to 363, 71, and 40 participants being classified as 'normal', 'pre-sarcopenia', and 'having sarcopenia', respectively. An Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis showed that age, bone mass phase angle (lower limb), Fat-free Mass Index, and leg muscle score were aggravating factors for sarcopenia in both men and women. A receiver operating characteristic analysis of bone mass and sarcopenia status showed that the area under the curve and cut-off value, as well as its sensitivity and specificity, in men were 0.915 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.853-0.977], 2.2 kg, 81%, and 87%, respectively, and 0.913 (95% CI: 0.858-0.968), 1.6 kg, 91%, and 88%, respectively, in women. This study revealed that the BIA method of measuring bone mass has excellent accuracy in detecting sarcopenia in both males and females.

Body composition assessment is often used in clinical practice to assess and monitor nutritional status. For example, body fat mass is a predictor of metabolic diseases, and for an athlete it is a criterion of performance. "Gold standard" - the method of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry - in contrast to bioelectrical impedance analysis, is difficult to apply in everyday clinical practice. Therefore, it becomes relevant to compare the consistency of measured body fat mass using densitometry and bioimpedanceometry. The aim of the study was to perform a comparative analysis of body fat mass estimated by bioimpedanceometry (two bioelectric impedance devices and three household scales with a function of determining body composition) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Material and methods. Sixteen healthy, physically active adults aged 25 [23; 26] years, male (n=7) and female (n=9), participated in the cross-sectional study. Body composition was assessed under standard conditions in the morning, after a 12-hour fast, using densitometry (Stratos Dr X-ray densitometer) and bioimpedanceometry [bioelectric impedance devices: Medass ABC-01, Diamant AIST (with manufacturer's predictive equations); household scales with a function of determining body composition: Tanita BC-718, Picooc Mini, Scarlett SC-216]. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 10 package (StatSoft, USA), and included Friedman's chi-criterion, Lin's correlation concordance coefficient, Bland-Altman method, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and Wilcoxon's criterion with Bonferroni correction for multiple studies. Results. None of the bioimpedanceometry devices studied showed a relationship (Bland- Altman coefficient >0.2) or consistency (Lin's correlation concordance coefficient <0.9) when compared to densitometry, although Spearman correlation was moderate for Tanita BC-718 (r=0.603, p<0.05), Diamant AIST (r=0.641, p<0.01) and Scarlett SC-216 (r=0.609, p<0.05), and notable for Medass ABC-01 (r=0.841, p<0.01) and Picooc Mini (r=0.718, p<0.01). Conclusion. This study found that no bioelectrical impedance device has consistency with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in assessing body fat mass. Since the accuracy of body fat mass measurement is critical in body composition diagnosis, the assessment results obtained by bioimpedanceometry should be interpreted with caution.

For decades, cardiologists have largely underestimated the role of the right heart in heart failure due to left heart disease. Nowadays, the importance of evaluating right ventricular (RV) structure and function in left heart failure is well documented and this concept has been emphasized in the most recent heart failure guidelines. However, several relevant questions remain unanswered such as the following: (a) which imaging technique (standard or 3D echocardiography or strain imaging or cardiac magnetic resonance) and, more, which parameters should be used to grade the severity of RV dysfunction? (b) do less widespread and less applied diagnostic tools such as cardiopulmonary stress testing and bioelectrical impedance analysis play a role in this field? (c) are there specific biochemical aspects of RV failure? (d) why notion of pathophysiology of heart and lung interaction are so well appreciated at an academic level but are not applied in the clinical setting? The present review has been prepared by the Heart Failure (HF) working group of the Italian Society of Cardiology and its main objective is to improve our understanding on RV dysfunction in heart failure.

The biophysical response of the human body to electric current is widely appreciated as a barometer of fluid distribution and cell function. From distinct raw bioelectrical impedance (BIA) variables assessed in the field of body composition, phase angle (PhA) has been repeatedly indicated as a functional marker of the cell's health and mass. Although resistance training (RT) programs have demonstrated to be effective to improve PhA, with varying degrees of change depending on other raw BIA variables, there is still limited research explaining the biological mechanisms behind these changes. Here, we aim to provide the rationale for the responsiveness of PhA determinants to RT, as well as to summarize all available evidence addressing the effect of varied RT programs on PhA of different age groups. Available data led us to conclude that RT modulates the cell volume by increasing the levels of intracellular glycogen and water, thus triggering structural and functional changes in different cell organelles. These alterations lead, respectively, to shifts in the resistive path of the electric current (resistance, R) and capacitive properties of the human body (reactance, Xc), which ultimately impact PhA, considering that it is the angular transformation of the ratio between Xc and R. Evidence drawn from experimental research suggests that RT is highly effective for enhancing PhA, especially when adopting high-intensity, volume, and duration RT programs combining other types of exercise. Still, additional research exploring the effects of RT on whole-body and regional BIA variables of alternative population groups is recommended for further knowledge development.
