RESUMEN

Members of the genus Ortholinea are among the worldwide distributed myxozoan parasites that mainly infect marine fish. In this study, a new myxosporean species, Ortholinea hamsiensis n. sp., was isolated from the urinary bladder of European anchovy Engraulis engrasicolus collected from the Sinop coasts of the Black Sea. The prevalence and density values of infection were 1.4% and 15 individuals in the field of view (1 + ), respectively. Mature myxospores are subspherical with slight tapering down to the less pronounced tip in the frontal view and subspherical in the sutural view. Myxospores measured 9.1 ± 0.25 (8.89.9) µm in length, 9.2 ± 0.11 (8.99.4) µm in thickness, and 8.4 ± 0.33 (8.2-9.1) µm in width. Two polar capsules equal in size measured 3.1 ± 0.11 (3.03.3) µm in length and 2.7 ± 0.11 (2.62.9) µm in width. The polar tubule had 34 coils. Along with morphological peculiarities, the results of the 18S rDNA also revealed it to be a new species for science compared to the other species of the genus. In this study, another myxosporean species O. gobiusi was also detected in round goby Neogobius melanostomus with a prevalence of infection value of 4.8% and a density of 15 individuals in the field of view (1 + ). The present study also provided the first data of 18S rDNA of O. gobiusi from N. melanostomus and type species of the genus O. divergens from Gobius niger and the phylogenetic relationships of these species with other Ortholinea species have been revealed.

RESUMEN

A 3-D transport and dispersion model was applied to study the recent past and future dynamics of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) concentrations in the Black Sea for the 2016-2030 period. The modelled surface concentrations show a distinct seasonal behaviour, shaped by winter to spring convective mixing. A significant increasing long-term trend in PFOS concentrations is established, with concentrations in water layers 200 m below the surface increasing at 4-8% per year. Driving mechanisms for PFOA and PFOS transport and accumulation in the subsurface and deeper layers are the cooling of the surface water in winter and the transport of water masses from the North Western Shelf (NWS) of the Black Sea. A simulated 50% phase-out of PFOA and PFOS from 2020 to 2030 shows a 21% reduction in PFOA, while PFOS continues to increase.

RESUMEN

The study presented here reports the concentration of major, trace, and rare earth elements in soil, sediments, and vegetation samples collected from 13 locations around Anapa City located on the northern coast of the Black Sea in Russia. The neutron activation analysis technique has been used to fulfill this objective. Along with this, the bioconcentration and translocation factors were calculated. Overall, the content of 31 elements was detected in soil and sediments while 20 elements were determined in three types of vegetation: macroalgae (Cystoseira sp. and Ulva sp.), aquatic plants (Phragmites australis), and sea grass (Zostera sp.). The quantified concentration followed the order soil > sediment > vegetation. The phytotoxic levels for Zn, V, Mn, and Fe have been quantified as the highest. Bromine was the most abundant and accumulated in Phragmites australis. Based on the results obtained from this investigation, there is a possibility of contamination in the study area.

RESUMEN

This study explored whether wildfire alters the soil properties and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community composition when compared with burnt rangeland, non-burnt rangeland and adjacent tilled in mesothermal ecosystems. The study was carried out in August 2020, 1 year later after wildfire. The results of this study showed that the wildfire played a key role in altering soil characteristics and AMF community composition in Bartin Province located in the Western Black Sea Region. Soil samples were made according to standard methods. AMF spores were isolated according to the wet sieving method, and the spores of AMF were identified according to their morphological characteristics. Analysis of variance was performed to determine the differences between the parameters, and correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationships between the parameters. The highest values of soil organic carbon (2.20%), total nitrogen (0.18%), K2O (74.68 kg/da), root colonization (87.5%) and the frequency of occurrence of Funneliformis geosporum (20%), Claroideoglomus claroideum (16%) and Claroideoglomus etunicatum (11%) were found in burnt rangeland. Sporulation of Acaulospora dilatata, Acaulospora morrowiae, Acaulospora tuberculata, Scutellospora castanea, Scutellospora coralloidea, Scutellospora scutata, Glomus coremioides and Glomus multicaule was either decreased or completely inhibited in the burnt rangeland. While species diversity of AMF (12) decreased, the number of AMF spores (325.6 (number/50 gr soil)) increased in burnt areas. In conclusion, the number of spores and root colonization of AMF increased but species diversity of AMF reduced after the wildfire. In ecosystems with high fire risk where AMF transfer is planned, it is suggested that it would be more appropriate to select species with an increase in spore number after fire.

RESUMEN

Unconscious and excessive use of plastic supports the diversity and abundance of microplastics (MPs) in marine environments. As a result of MP exposure, organisms in the marine environment are faced with adverse scenarios up to death. In this study, ten-year MP composition was investigated in gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of low-mobility seahorses (90 individuals per period) from the Southeastern Black Sea. Seahorse GITs sampled during both 2012 and 2022 contain 102 and 135 MP items, respectively. The number of MPs per unit individual seahorse and unit seahorse weight was higher in the 2022 period. On the other hands, no significant differences were observed between the MP lengths of both periods. The majority of MPs in both sample periods were materials shorter than 1000 µm. Of the eight found synthetic polymers, five belonged to the 2012 period, while seven were observed during the 2022 period. Additionally, the most abundant synthetic polymer for both periods is polyvinyl stearate (PVS). As a result, 43% of the total plastic material belonged to the 2012 period, while 57% was observed in the 2022 period. Considering both the diversity of polymers and the abundance of plastics, the region was adversely affected by plastic materials in the 2022 period.

RESUMEN

Tea is a worldwide consumed herbal beverage and it was aimed in this study to reveal the major fractions of green and black tea in order to enlighten the in vitro inhibition potency on the well-known drug metabolizing enzyme CYP2D6 activity. Methylxanthine fractions were extracted from green and black tea and a yield of 0.265 g (1.06%) for 25 g of dried black tea and 0.302 g (1.2%) for 25 g of green tea was calculated. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis represented that the major components of the methylxanthine fractions were caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. Methylxanthine content of black tea was 368.25 ± 4.6 µg/ml caffeine, 89.30 ± 2.3 µg/ml theobromine, and 3.40 ± 0.5 µg/ml theophylline, whereas that of green tea was 176.50 ± 3.7 µg/ml caffeine, 53.85 ± 1.4 µg/ml theobromine, and 2.06 ± 0.7 µg/ml theophylline. The results of concentration-dependent inhibition studies were 76% green tea, 75% black tea, and 55% caffeine at concentration of 10 mg/ml. The inhibition rates of green and black tea on CYP2D6 activity were 76% and 75%, respectively, where that of quinidine, the well-known inhibitor of CYP2D6, was 82%. Our results indicate that green and black tea is very likely to modify the CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

RESUMEN

Northern Hemispheric high-latitude climate variations during the last glacial are expected to propagate globally in a complex way. Investigating the evolution of these variations requires a precise synchronization of the considered environmental archives. Aligning the globally common production rate variations of the cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be in different archives provides a tool for such synchronizations. Here, we present a 10Be record at <40-y resolution along with subdecadal proxy records from one Black Sea sediment core around Greenland Interstadial 10 (GI-10) ∼41 ka BP and the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion. We synchronized our 10Be record to that from Greenland ice cores based on its globally common production rate variations. The synchronized environmental proxy records reveal a bipartite climate response in the Black Sea region at the onset of GI-10. First, in phase with Greenland warming, reduced sedimentary coastal ice rafted detritus contents indicate less severe winters. Second, and with a lag of 190 (± 44) y, an increase in the detrital K/Ti ratio and authigenic Ca precipitation point to enhanced regional precipitation and warmer lake surface temperatures. We explain the lagged climatic response by a shift in the dominant mode of atmospheric circulation, likely connected with a time-transgressive adjustment of the regional thermal ocean interior to interstadial conditions.

RESUMEN

The morphological and molecular identification of Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes in the Black Sea remains unresolved and incomplete. The aim of current study was to provide a detailed morphological identification with rDNA whole ITS (ITS‒1, 5.8S subunit, ITS‒2) and mtDNA cox2 sequences data of Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes infecting four commonly edible marine fish species, including European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus (L.), horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus (L.), whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.), and red mullet, Mullus barbatus ponticus (E.) in the Black Sea (FAO fishing area 37.4.2). Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes were morphologically classified, followed by whole ITS and cox2 sequencing. Four Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes, III, IV, VIII, and IX, are described based on morphological and molecular data. The present study provides the first study reporting whole ITS and cox2 sequences for Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes III, IV, VIII and III, IV, VIII, IX, respectively, in the Black Sea. Here, we offer a foundation for future research on the distribution, morphologic and molecular identification of Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes infecting edible some marine fish in the Black Sea.

RESUMEN

This study was carried out at a vital stopover site of migrating birds in the Turkish Thrace, European part of Turkey, on the Mediterranean/Black Sea Flyway. Ticks were collected from the birds captured in the four migration periods, i.e., autumn 2020, spring 2021, autumn 2021, and spring 2022, and identified morphologically. Throughout the study, 10,651 birds from 77 species were examined, and 671 belonging to 34 species were found infested. The infestation prevalence in total birds and the mean number of ticks per infested bird were 6.3% and 3.8 (range: 1-142), respectively. A total of 2573 ticks were collected with the following species distribution and numbers: Ixodes spp. 70 larvae, I. frontalis 1829 larvae, 337 nymphs, and 30 adults, I. acuminatus 16 nymphs and 42 adults, I. ricinus 39 larvae, 141 nymphs, and one adult, Hyalomma spp. seven larvae and 60 nymphs, and Haemaphysalis sp. one larva. Prevalence, intensity, and species distribution of the ticks in birds varied depending on the month, season, year, and species-specific migration phenology of the birds. The results show that precise determination of the tick-borne risk associated with migratory birds for a particular region necessarily requires long-term and comprehensive studies and indicates that anthropogenic climate change and habitat degradation can significantly differentiate the risk by influencing the migration phenology in birds and by making new regions suitable for the establishment of different ticks.

RESUMEN

The work presents the findings of the laboratory and in situ studies of ctenophore Pleurobrachia pileus O.F. Müller, 1776 which have shown that this species has bioluminescent properties. These organisms were considered non-luminous before. P. pileus bioluminescence was studied on board RV Professor Vodyanitsky during its 116th voyage. Sampling live organisms was preceded by probing with the Salpa MA+ probe to register the daily maximum glow in redoxcline, which in this zone was recorded, as a rule, in the depth range of 60-70 m, where dense clusters of P. pileus were formed at that time. The samples of ctenophores were taken by a Bogorov-Rass plankton net. After the net was closed, it was lifted to the surface at a speed of 0.4-0.5 m s-1 . It was shown that only at a temperature not exceeding 14°C, the P. pileus remained alive for 2-3 days. The data provided indicate that the temperature above 14°C is close to the maximum permissible for P. pileus; therefore, chemical and mechanical stimulation experiments were carried out at this temperature (14°C) to agitate ctenophores luminescence. Though, the nature of their signal was significantly different. The total percentage of luminous organisms from the entire catch was 32.43%, which unequivocally proves that P. pileus glows and makes a significant contribution to the intensity of the glow at great depths in redoxcline.

RESUMEN

The findings of the study on the impact of hypoxia on the glow of the Black Sea ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865 of three size groups (20-30, 30-45, and 45-60 mm) were obtained under experimental conditions. Peculiarities of ctenophore bioluminescence were studied during mechanical and chemical stimulation under the conditions of normoxia (at an oxygen concentration of 5.6-6.7 mg O2  L-1 ), moderate hypoxia (2.5-2.8 mg O2  L-1 ), and acute hypoxia (1.2-1.5 mg O2  L-1 ). An increase in the amplitude and energy of luminescence of the ctenophores mechanically and chemically stimulated was observed at an oxygen concentration of 1.2-1.5 mg O2  L-1 (acute hypoxia) in two size groups in the lobate form (30-45 and 45-60 mm). The inhibition of amplitude, energy, and duration of the signal was registered in M. leidyi ctenophores at the transitional stage from larva to the lobate form under conditions of acute hypoxia. It was noted that in normoxia, the values of the amplitude and energy of the bioluminescent signal of M. leidyi increase along with a size growth of an individual. This phenomenon was observed both during mechanical and chemical stimulations. Under conditions of acute hypoxia, this trend was mainly preserved. The universality of the relation between the bioluminescence of the organisms and their bioenergetics is obvious. The bioluminescent system of ctenophores has the role of an antioxidant system and is engaged in the neutralization of reactive oxygen species (ROS), that is the process during which photons are emitted. The response of the bioluminescent system to a decrease in oxygen concentration can be associated with an increase in the production of ROS that provides high values of the ctenophore luminescence under hypoxic conditions.

RESUMEN

During the parasitological examination of molluscs Abra segmentum obtained from the Black Sea basin, parthenitae belonging to the family Faustulidae were found. The cercariae were obtained by natural emergence and were studied using differential interference contrast microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Specimens resemble Cercaria pennata ex Tapes rugatus which was described from the Sevastopol area, in the shape and length of the body, tail length, location and shape of internal organs, suckers, pharynx, testicular rudiments, and the number and position of longitudinal lamellae on the tail finlets. To date, there are only limited descriptions of the parthenitae of C. pennata without detailed measurements, thus the taxonomic position of the individuals studied needs thorough revision and molecular verification. According to the molecular analyses, C. pennata was identical to that of published sequences of Pronoprymna ventricosa.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Mad honey poisoning is a common public health problem that can be seen in many parts of the world. In this study, the symptoms and clinical findings of mad honey poisoning cases and their distribution worldwide were investigated based on current data. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were searched. The demographic characteristics of the cases, clinical findings, amount of consumed honey, duration of hospitalization, and data of the region where mad honey was produced were recorded. RESULTS: 900 cases were identified. The majority of poisoning cases (91.44%) were reported from mad honey produced in Turkey, Nepal (4.67%) came second and Korea (1.56) third. The majority of cases in Turkey were due to honey produced in the Black Sea Region. It was also determined that the mad honey was produced in the west Black Sea Region in most of the cases (35.22%), followed by the east Black Sea Region with a rate of 33.22%. In poisonous cases, it was determined that the mad honey was mostly produced in Rize, followed by Trabzon and Kastamonu, respectively. The most common signs of mad honey poisoning were bradycardia (88.48%) and hypotension (76.04%). CONCLUSION: The majority of cases have been reported from Turkey. When examining where the mad honey was produced in Turkey, it was seen that the western Black Sea Region came first, and the eastern Black Sea Region came second. Rize came first among the provinces, followed by Trabzon and Kastamonu. There is a parallelism between the distribution of mad honey poisoning cases and the distribution areas of Rhododendron species. However, although Rhododendron species show a widespread distribution throughout the world, why the majority of the cases were reported from Turkey draws attention as an issue that needs to be investigated.

RESUMEN

MP contamination in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) used in fishmeal production was examined. The samples were collected from Balik Lake, Karabogaz Lake, and Liman Lake located in Kizilirmak Delta, Türkiye. The overall average abundance was 3.20±0.18 MP per fish and 0.036±0.002 MP per g. No significant correlation was determined between the MP abundance in the fish, fish length, and fish weight. The polymers were composed of 56.91% PET, 25.20% PP, 9.76% PE, and 8.13% PA. The determined shapes were fiber (78.0%), fragment (13.46%), and film (8.54%). The size ranged between 112 and 4775 µm with an average of 1341.41±66.07 µm. Depending on the occurrence frequency and abundance, it can be concluded that Carassius gibelio can be considered a MP vector in fishmeal. The results provide an essential baseline for future MP studies on the potential effects of MPs on aquatic organisms, fate, and impact on the fishmeal production process, aquaculture practices, and human health.

RESUMEN

Underwater sea caves form a relatively under-examined habitat type within the marine regions of Europe, although they provide unique physical conditions such as reduced light and wave energy, in addition to reduced temperature amplitude. This study aimed at revealing the characteristics of submerged cavities on the southern Romanian continental shelf where six protected areas exist. We used high-resolution bathymetry data and side-scan sonar imaging to identify limestone outcrops where cavities would be most probable to form and then performed visual observation during SCUBA diving activities. We found that submerged cavities appear in all marine-protected areas and their neighboring unprotected areas from the shore to ~20-m depth mostly in the form of caverns, niches, and overhangs that meet the physical requirements of the habitat type 8330 as defined by the European Commission. We propose that habitat type 8330 should be listed in the Natura 2000 Standard Data Forms of the protected areas where it is missing, and we also propose that some protected areas should be expanded to include important areas with the occurrence of this habitat type. Finally, we note here for the first time the occurrence of Movile-type karst and an associated sulfidic water spring on the southern shore of Lake Techirghiol, similar to the region near Mangalia where it was first described in the literature. Although our finding prompts for a more detailed study, it indicates the existence of an underground ecosystem similar to that from the well-studied Movile Cave, but isolated by a distance of over 20 km.

RESUMEN

In this research, the effect of flooding caused by heavy precipitation, postulated to be one of the consequences of climate change, on toxic metal concentrations in two demersal fish species, whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) and red mullet (Mullus barbatus), was investigated. For both demersal fish species, concentrations of Hg, Fe, Cd, Pb, Se, Al, Zn, Cu, Sr, B, Cr, Mn, Ni, Ba, and Li were compared between samples taken from Türkeli, Sinop, Black Sea, before and after the flood event in August 2021. Hg, Mn, Se, Li, B, and Sr metal concentrations increased in whiting and in red mullet in the post-flood samples. Estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient, cancer risk, the maximum allowable daily consumption rate and minimum daily requirements, and health risk analyses indicated that daily consumption of whiting and red mullet was risky due to the heavy metal Hg level after the flood. In addition, it was found that the samples had higher levels of Se than Hg, Se/Hg ratios were above 1, and Se-HBV were positive. Therefore, whiting and red mullet fishing should be restricted for a limited time period in the region.

RESUMEN

Port State Control (PSC) is a crucial process that controls the compatibility of ships with maritime standards and regulations. PSC's duty is to provide a safe and secure maritime environment, as well as the protection of coastal regions, through inspections. After the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the PSC inspection process, and the number of inspections and detentions, has changed. This study aims to find the most influential deficiency types that cause ship detentions both before and during the pandemic with the Entropy-based Grey Relation Analysis (GRA) method and to study the hidden relationships of deficiency types by examining the frequency of co-occurrence of them with the Association Rule Mining (ARM) method, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Detention data was gathered from the Black Sea Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Region covering the 1st of January 2018-31st December 2021 period. GRA analysis reveals that deficiencies related to Fire Safety and Emergency Systems are found as the most crucial deficiency types for ship detentions in both pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. ARM analysis indicates that there is a strong relationship between International Safety Management (ISM) and Certificate and Documentation (CD) during the pandemic. The findings of this study imply that changes in the PSC regime during the pandemic period led to sub-standard inspections. Based on these results and implications, this study gives recommendations to improve the efficiency of PSC inspections during the pandemic and similar conditions.

RESUMEN

Sandgrouse (Pteroclidae, Pterocliformes) are specialized ground birds of open arid landscapes with a very poorly studied evolutionary history. In the late Pliocene-early Pleistocene, Pteroclidae are known only from few localities in Southern Europe. The article describes a relatively large fossil sandgrouse from the early Pleistocene of the Taurida cave in the Crimea. This is the first record of Pteroclidae in the ancient faunas of the Black Sea region and Eastern Europe. The unusual structure of the tibiotarsus makes it possible to describe the fossil form from Taurida Cave as a new species, Pterocles bosporanus sp. nov.

RESUMEN

Buttonquails (family Turnicidae of the order Charadriiformes) are a morphologically specialized group of small, predominantly tropical birds of open landscapes, which is extremely poorly represented in the fossil record. The article describes a fragmentary humerus of a buttonquail from the Lower Pleistocene of the Taurida Cave in central Crimea. This is the first find of the family Turnicidae in Eurasia in a chronological interval from the Pliocene through the Middle Pleistocene. The find highlights the limited nature of available information on the taxonomic composition of Early Quaternary Eurasian avifaunas, even at the family level, and sheds light on the Late Cenozoic evolutionary history of Turnicidae.

In the present study, 2 species of myxozoan parasites, the novel Ceratomyxa scophthalmi sp. nov. and Myxidium finnmarchicum, were documented from the gallbladder of Scophthalmus maeoticus inhabiting the Turkish Black Sea coast at Sinop. C. scophthalmi sp. nov. had mostly spherical, clavate, and fine-grained polymorphic plasmodia that ranged in diameter from 16.0 to 29.0 µm. Spores were arcuate with a convex anterior margin and concave posterior. Valves of spores were highly elongated and unequal in thickness with one valve 1.1-1.3 times thicker than the other. Valves narrowed gradually toward slightly truncated ends. The mean (range) dimensions of spores were 9.4 (8.5-10.0) µm in length and 49.6 (44.5-55.0) µm in thickness, with polar capsules that were 3.1 (2.7-3.5) µm in length and 3.2 (2.7-3.5) µm in width. Polar filaments were coiled with 4-5 turns. Large numbers of immature forms of C. scophthalmi sp. nov., which were often 'crumpled', and mature forms were found together in the gallbladder bile. Along with morphological differences, phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rDNA, including pairwise nucleotide similarities with other related Ceratomyxa species, suggests C. scophthalmi as a novel species. Moreover, this report provides the first morphological and molecular descriptions of M. finnmarchicum outside of its original geographical location and type host species.
