RESUMEN

AIM: Skeletal muscles of Body Builders (BB) represent an interesting model to study muscle mass gains in response to high volume resistance training. It is debated whether muscle contractile performance improves in proportion to mass. Here, we aim to assess whether muscle hypertrophy does not occur at the expense of performance. METHODS: Six BB and Six untrained controls (CTRL) were recruited. Cross-sectional area (CSA) and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of quadriceps femoris muscle (QF) and CSA and architecture of vastus lateralis (VL) were determined. Moreover, a biopsy was taken from VL mid-portion and single fibres were analysed. RESULTS: QF CSA and MVC were 32% (n.s., P = .052) and 58% (P = .009) higher in BB than in CTRL, respectively. VL CSA was 37% higher in BB (P = .030). Fast 2A fibres CSA was 24% (P = .048) greater in BB than in CTRL, when determined in immunostained sections of biopsy samples. Single permeabilized fast fibres CSA was 37% (n.s., P = .052) higher in BB than in CTRL, and their force was slightly higher in BB (n.s.), while specific tension (P0 ) was 19% (P = .024) lower. The lower P0 was not explained either by lower myosin content or by impaired calcium diffusion. Conversely, the swelling caused by skinning-induced permeabilization was different and, when used to correct P0 , differences between populations disappeared. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that high degree of muscle hypertrophy is not detrimental for force generation capacity, as increases in fibre size and force are strictly proportional once the differential swelling response is accounted for.

Methods for assessing the wicking properties of individual fibre bundles have been developed from models based on the original Washburn equation (WE) and the modified Washburn equation (MWE), which also accounts for swelling. Both models gave indication of differences in wicking properties of flax and the viscose fibres, though MWE gave additional information that could be interpreted in terms of the physical model. Wicking of the viscose fibres is mainly via inter-fibre capillaries while that of flax is a combination of inter-fibre capillaries and lumen present in some elementary fibres. The degree of swelling and associated rotation of flax fibre in a vapour pressure range of 1-6torr were monitored using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). Viscose fibre exhibited swelling under the same conditions but did not rotate. The two techniques highlighted different mechanisms of wicking which can be used for monitoring moisture uptake/swelling of treated fibres for fabrication of composites.

RESUMEN

The saltwater immersion method was developed to inhibit mould growth on flood- or tsunami-damaged paper. Commercially available fine paper used for printing and writing showed decreased tensile indices after saltwater immersion. The salt remaining in the paper tended to increase the moisture content because of the salt deliquescence and moisture in the air. The tensile index was restored by removing salt from the paper. Crystallization and distribution of salt in interfibre pores were also considered to influence interfibre rebonding. The difference in the fibre responses to saltwater depended on the relationship between nano-scaled pores in the fibre walls, osmotic pressure, and the degree of sizing, which resulted in low water retention values. More of the starch applied as a surface sizing agent was dissolved or dispersed during distilled water immersion than saltwater immersion. This loosened the fibre network, which was a factor that decreased the sizing degree of the paper.
