Performance and the stability of the perovskite-based photovoltaic devices are directly linked to existing trap-states or defect profiles at the surface and/or in the bulk of perovskite layers. Hence identification of stemming the defects during perovskite formation is crucial for achieving superior and long-lasting performances. Here, we present the effect of 1-Pentanethiol incorporation into the one-step deposition of perovskite layers. A feasible glove box-free route results in high-quality CH3NH3PbI3layers under highly humid conditions (RH > 50%) but at low temperatures (T< 18 °C). 1-Pentanethiol addition into the washing solvent leads to the refinement of I/Pb stoichiometry, elimination of the iodide deficiencies, and reduction of the trap-state densities. Consequently, a precise amount 1-Pentanethiol addition enhances photovoltaic performances, resulting in a 54% PCE improvement for CH3NH3PbI3-based inverted solar cells.

The engineered Hand Test System (HTS) glove has shown high reliability in assessing the baseline functional status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) hand. Starting from this achievement, the aim of the present observational prospective study was to assess the functionality of the single fingers of rheumatoid hand at follow-up. Eighty RA patients performed HTS glove tests at baseline and among these fifty-six patients were re-tested after 7 months. The HTS glove parameters [Touch Duration (TD), Movement Rate (MR), Inter Tapping Interval (ITI)] were correlated with disease activity and disability clinimetric indexes [Disease Activity Score 28 joint count-C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP), Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI), Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI), Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI), grip strength, visual analogue scale of pain (VAS), patient global assessment (PGA)], and with laboratory values. HTS glove parameters (TD, ITI, and MR) showed statistically significant correlations with clinimetric and clinical indexes at both time points (p < 0.05). During follow-up, a statistically significant variation of all HTS glove parameters for the fingers that have performed both the worst or best HTS test at baseline was detected (p < 0.05), while the mean HTS glove parameter values by considering all fingers did not show a statistically significant variation over time, as well as the traditional clinimetric indexes. Besides the objective role in assessing the RA hand function by integrating the traditional clinimetric indexes, the HTS glove seems a useful tool for evaluating worst or best finger function during time by measuring the movement speed.

BACKGROUND: Comfort gloves are used in the management of hand dermatoses. OBJECTIVES: To compare the acceptance and tolerability of comfort gloves made of different materials in patients with hand dermatoses and their effects on skin lesions. METHODS: In a prospective multicenter study, 284 patients with hand dermatoses were invited to wear either a cotton glove (COT) or a semipermeable Sympatex glove underneath a cotton glove (SYM/COT) for two subsequent phases of 19 consecutive nights each. A total of 88 controls were asked not to wear any comfort gloves overnight. The severity of skin lesions over time was examined. Questionnaires were used to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and acceptance and tolerability of the gloves. RESULTS: The hand dermatoses improved in all groups. No substantial intergroup differences regarding severity and HRQoL were observed. SYM/COT received better ratings regarding climate conditions and tactility while COT showed superiority in fit, wearing comfort, and practicality. CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed that SYM/COT and COT are well tolerated and accepted suggesting that SYM/COT is a good alternative for COT as comfort gloves in patients with hand dermatoses. Individual requirements, needs, and preferences may direct the material choice.

An intelligent fluorescent nanoprobe (lignite-CDs-Eu) was constructed by an effective and facile method based on lignite-derived carbon dots (CDs) and lanthanide europium ions (Eu3+), which exhibited high sensitivity, low detection limit (13.35 nM) and visual color variation (from blue to red) under ultraviolet light towards tetracycline (TC) detection. Significantly, portable and economical sensors were developed using lignite-CDs-Eu immobilized fiber material of filter paper and wearable glove with the aid of color extracting and image processing application (APP) in the smartphone. Facile, fast and real-time visual detection of TC in food samples was realized. Moreover, logic gate circuit was also designed to achieve intelligent and semi-quantitative inspection of TC. To some extent, this study extended the cross-application of intelligent computer software in food analytical science, and provided a certain reference for the development of small portable detection sensors which were suitable for convenience and non-professional use in daily life.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are pivotal in translating neural activities into control commands for external assistive devices. Non-invasive techniques like electroencephalography (EEG) offer a balance of sensitivity and spatial-temporal resolution for capturing brain signals associated with motor activities. This work introduces MOVING, a Multi-Modal dataset of EEG signals and Virtual Glove Hand Tracking. This dataset comprises neural EEG signals and kinematic data associated with three hand movements-open/close, finger tapping, and wrist rotation-along with a rest period. The dataset, obtained from 11 subjects using a 32-channel dry wireless EEG system, also includes synchronized kinematic data captured by a Virtual Glove (VG) system equipped with two orthogonal Leap Motion Controllers. The use of these two devices allows for fast assembly (∼1 min), although introducing more noise than the gold standard devices for data acquisition. The study investigates which frequency bands in EEG signals are the most informative for motor task classification and the impact of baseline reduction on gesture recognition. Deep learning techniques, particularly EEGnetV4, are applied to analyze and classify movements based on the EEG data. This dataset aims to facilitate advances in BCI research and in the development of assistive devices for people with impaired hand mobility. This study contributes to the repository of EEG datasets, which is continuously increasing with data from other subjects, which is hoped to serve as benchmarks for new BCI approaches and applications.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the impact of low-tempo, repetitive hand movements on vibrotactile sensitivity by employing various temporal and spatial patterns in the hand and wrist area. BACKGROUND: The investigation of a human's ability to perceive vibrotactile stimuli during dynamic hand movements remains understudied, despite the prevalence of slow to mild hand motions in applications such as hand navigation or gesture control using haptic gloves in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). METHOD: We investigated vibrotactile sensitivity, analyzing the impact of various factors, including Motion (static and low-tempo repetitive hand movements), Temporal Patterns (Single or Double vibrations with varying onset times), Tactor Placements (hand and wrist), Spatial Patterns, and Biological Sex. RESULTS: Our study revealed that Motion significantly influences vibrotactile sensitivity in the hand and wrist areas, leading to reduced accuracy rates during dynamic conditions. Additionally, as the stimulus onset approached in Double vibrations, accuracy rates markedly decreased. Notably, Hand Placement resulted in significantly higher accuracy rates compared to the Wrist Placement. CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore the impact of motion in reducing vibrotactile sensitivity on the back of the hand and around the wrist. APPLICATION: This research has wide-ranging practical applications, particularly in the field of VR/AR experiences, rehabilitation programs, and accessibility solutions through the use of haptic gloves. Insights from our study can be harnessed to enhance the efficacy of haptic gloves in conveying vibrotactile cues within these contexts.

BACKGROUND: A brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) can cause reduced ability to use the arm and hand in daily activities due to reduced grip strength and endurance. A soft robotic glove can increase the number of activities performed and improve activity performance for patients with neurological disease. The use of a soft robotic glove for patients with BPBI has not been studied. PURPOSE: To investigate if a soft robotic glove can improve activity performance and body function for patients with BPBI. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal Case Series. METHODS: A convenience sample of patients with BPBI, treated by the Brachial plexus injury service in Umeå, Sweden were studied. Eight patients used a soft robotic glove, (Carbonhand®), at home for three months. Data on activity performance and satisfaction with activity performance, active range of motion and strength were collected at baseline, and at three and four months. A patient evaluation form was filled out at three months, all patients kept a diary for three out of 12 weeks. RESULTS: Six out of eight patients wanted to continue using the device and improved their self-perception of activity performance and satisfaction with the performance due to a more secure grip, compared to when not using the device. All patients had improved maximum strength and endurance in elbow flexion at three months. The device was useful as an assisting device and as a training tool. CONCLUSION: A soft robotic glove (Carbonhand) may improve activity performance and perceived satisfaction and increase the number of activities that a person with BPBI can perform in everyday life. It is possible to increase strength in elbow flexion after using such a device. Due to this limited material, more research is needed.

This study investigated the permeation resistance of chemical protective gloves made of laminate film comprising nylon, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), and other materials against different chemical substances to examine their usability in different work processes. The permeation resistance of the chemical protective glove was tested using the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) test method against twelve substances: acetone, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 1,4-diethylene dioxide, and ethanol. After 480 min, no substance, except for methanol and ethanol, permeated at a standard permeation rate of 0.1 µg/cm2/min. Methanol and ethanol showed permeation at 1 min and 30 min elapsed, respectively. Hence, the gloves tested in this study exhibited permeation resistance to various chemical substances, and can thus be used in many work processes. Some film materials have short permeation time against certain chemical substances, but the chemical protective gloves tested in this study can be used at work sites, such as manufacturing sites, that require permeation resistance to different chemical substances.

Background: Purple glove syndrome (PGS) is a rare condition characterized by limb edema, discoloration, and pain associated with intravenous and oral phenytoin administration. The pathophysiology is poorly understood, and there is no established treatment. Simple cases have previously been managed with hyaluronidase subcutaneous injections, with more severe cases resulting in compartment syndrome, debridement, or even amputation. Methods/Results: In this case report, a 2-year-old boy with status epilepticus developed PGS after receiving intravenous phenytoin via a cannula on the dorsum of the right hand. The patient was successfully managed by locally infiltrating subcutaneous hyaluronidase diffusely to the affected area, titrating its dose to effect, rather than aiming to adhere to any specific dosing limitation. The child was reviewed daily by the Plastic Surgery team until being discharged, and focal lesions began to demarcate after 48 hours, with epidermal loss but no deeper trauma. The epidermis peeled within one month, with healthy underlying skin found underlying when followed up in clinic. Conclusions: This case illustrates that subcutaneous administration of hyaluronidase and titrating to effect provides an effective and safe treatment for treating distal cases of early PGS in children.

BACKGROUND: Semipermeable membranes might be suitable for glove liners or comfort gloves in individuals with irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of different glove materials on inflammation and epidermal barrier impairment after experimental skin irritation. METHODS: Nine test areas on the volar forearms of 24 healthy volunteers were irritated with sodium lauryl sulfate (1%) and afterward covered for 6 days (6 or 8 h/day) with semipermeable Sympatex (SYM), vinyl (OCC), combinations of vinyl with Sympatex (SYM/OCC) or cotton (COT/OCC), or left uncovered (CON). Up to day 10, measurements of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema (a*), skin humidity (SH) and visual scoring (VS) were applied. RESULTS: No significant differences in skin parameters were found between COT/OCC and SYM/OCC as well as between each of the combinations and CON. SYM, COT/OCC and SYM/OCC led to better results for most skin parameters than OCC alone. CONCLUSIONS: Occlusive material has a negative impact on skin barrier recovery and inflammation after skin irritation whereas SYM is not inferior to uncovered areas indicating good tolerability. Altogether, the data suggest that SYM is a useful alternative to COT as material for glove liners and comfort gloves in ICD patients.

BACKGROUND: Glove occlusion might enhance skin sensitivity to a subsequent detergent challenge (occlusion effect). Thus, some skin protection creams (PC) claim to protect against this effect of occlusion, and are recommended to be used before wearing liquid-proof gloves. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of PC applied prior to glove occlusion on the 'occlusion effect'-refers to increased susceptibility of the skin to a model detergent. METHODS: One hundred and eleven volunteers were enrolled in a single-blind, randomized study. Seven PCs were applied before glove occlusion over 7 days (D1-D7). After sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) challenge, we compared the irritation between the areas treated with PC and occlusion alone. Clinical scoring and bioengineering methods (capacitance, transepidermal water loss [TEWL], and colourimetry [erythema]) were used to quantify the irritant reactions. RESULTS: After 1 week of occlusion and PC application, we did not observe significant changes in TEWL, nor in erythema, whereas skin hydration raised in three cream-treated areas. On day 10, after a challenge with SLS, some products significantly aggravated the skin irritation as compared to occlusion alone. CONCLUSIONS: The 'occlusion effect'-shown as higher skin susceptibility to a model detergent-was not mitigated by PCs when applied prior to glove occlusion. On the contrary, some PCs might have negative effects on skin barrier function and augment such sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have shown that the incidence of glove lesions during arthroscopy is much lower than that during primary and revision arthroplasty. However, the rate of glove damage after knot tying has not yet been systematically recorded. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the impact of surgical knot tying on glove integrity. It was hypothesized that knot tying increases the rate of glove damage, especially in arthroscopic surgery, which could be of special relevance in the treatment of rotator cuff tears. METHODS: Gloves that were changed immediately before suturing and only worn during knot tying were investigated for their integrity by means of water tightening test according to EN455. A total of 234 gloves from 40 total hip arthroplasties (THAs), 42 total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) and 36 rotator cuff repairs (RCRs) were collected. A bacterial pass-through test (BPTT) on glove lesions was performed under simulated sterile surgical conditions for 3 surgeons after a wear duration of 45 min. RESULTS: Glove damage by knot tying occurred in 25% of THA, 36.6% of TKA and 25% of RCR surgeries. In THA, the pulling hand (PH) was affected in 46.2%, and the main area of damage (15.4%) was detected on the tip of the middle finger; in TKAs the PH was damaged in 75%, and in RCRs the PH was affected in 66.7%, with most of the lesions (20% each) occurring on the tip of the index finger and the ring finger. The BPTT showed Staphylococcus hominis and Bacillus cereus. CONCLUSION: Intraoperative knot tying causes damage to gloves, which is of special relevance for arthroscopic surgery. Whereas knot tying is only partly responsible for glove damage in arthroplasty, the general rate of glove damage in arthroscopic surgery is low without knot tying. The surgical knot tying process must be understood as a possible damaging impact on the glove. Therefore, single gloving is not recommended, which is especially important in arthroscopic surgery, where double gloving is not yet standard. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

BACKGROUND: To compare the surgical outcomes and costs of in-bag abdominal manual morcellation (AMM) and contained power morcellation (PM) in laparoscopic myomectomy. METHODS: A total of 61 patients were divided into two groups based on their myomectomy specimen extraction methods: AMM group (n = 33) and electromechanical contained PM group (n = 28). The surgical outcomes and cost were compared between groups. During AMM, a glove bag (in 27 patients) and an endo bag were used (in 6 patients) according to the myoma size. RESULTS: Morcellation time (18 ± 9.2 min vs. 37.4 ± 14.1 min) and total operation time (100 ± 24.3 min vs. 127 ± 33.1 min) were significantly lower in the AMM group compared to those in the PM group. Other surgical outcomes, which were similar between groups, included delta hemoglobin, length of hospital stay and VAS score at 12 and 24 h postoperatively. There were no per- or postoperative complications in both group with no conversion to laparotomy. One patient was transfused with two units of erythrocyte suspension postoperatively in the PM group. Sarcoma was not diagnosed in any of the cases in both group. CONCLUSION: The in-bag AMM or contained PM for specimen extraction resulted in similar outcomes in terms of delta hemoglobin, postoperative pain intensity (VAS score at 12 and 24 h postoperatively), the need for additional analgesia, and the length of hospital stay; however, total operation time and morcellation time were significantly shorter in the AMM group, indicating a prominent advantage. Significant cost-effectiveness is also a critical advantage of in-bag AMM compared to containing PM.

The application of copper-based nanoparticles synthesized via green synthesis and their integration with a wearable electrode is reported for designing a flexible catalytic electrode on a glove for onsite electroanalysis of paraquat. A copper precursor and an orange extract from Citrus reticulata are used to synthesize an economical electrocatalytic material for supporting the selective and sensitive detection of paraquat. The electrode yields multidimensional fingerprints due to two redox couples in a square wave voltammogram, corresponding to the presence of paraquat. The developed lab-on-a-finger sensor provides the fast electroanalysis of paraquat within 10 s, covering a wide range from 0.50 to 1000 µM, with a low detection limit down to 0.31 µM and high selectivity. It is also possible to use this sensor at a fast scan rate as high as 6 V s-1 (< 0.5 s for a scan). This wearable glove sensor allows the user to directly touch and analyze samples, such as surfaces of vegetables and fruits, to screen the contamination. It is envisioned that these glove-embedded sensors can be applied to the on-site analysis of food contamination and environments.

Considering the ever-growing volume of electronic documents made available in our daily lives, the need for an efficient tool to capture their gist increases as well. Automatic text summarization, which is a process of shortening long text and extracting valuable information, has been of great interest for decades. Due to the difficulties of semantic understanding and the requirement of large training data, the development of this research field is still challenging and worth investigating. In this paper, we propose an automated text summarization approach with the adaptation of static and contextual representations based on an extractive approach to address the research gaps. To better obtain the semantic expression of the given text, we explore the combination of static embeddings from GloVe (Global Vectors) and the contextual embeddings from BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer) and GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) based models. In order to reduce human annotation costs, we employ policy gradient reinforcement learning to perform unsupervised training. We conduct empirical studies on the public dataset, Gigaword. The experimental results show that our approach achieves promising performance and is competitive with various state-of-the-art approaches.

This study introduces a new wearable fiber-optic sensor glove. The glove utilizes a flexible material, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and a silicone tube to encapsulate fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). It is employed to enable the self-perception of hand posture, gesture recognition, and the prediction of grasping objects. The investigation employs the Support Vector Machine (SVM) approach for predicting grasping objects. The proposed fiber-optic sensor glove can concurrently monitor the motion of 14 hand joints comprising 5 metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP), 5 proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP), and 4 distal interphalangeal joints (DIP). To expand the measurement range of the sensors, a sinusoidal layout incorporates the FBG array into the glove. The experimental results indicate that the wearable sensing glove can track finger flexion within a range of 0° to 100°, with a modest minimum measurement error (Error) of 0.176° and a minimum standard deviation (SD) of 0.685°. Notably, the glove accurately detects hand gestures in real-time and even forecasts grasping actions. The fiber-optic smart glove technology proposed herein holds promising potential for industrial applications, including object grasping, 3D displays via virtual reality, and human-computer interaction.

Wearing gloves during machinery operation in workshops is essential for preventing accidental injuries, such as mechanical damage and burns. Ensuring that workers are wearing gloves is a key strategy for accident prevention. Consequently, this study proposes a glove detection algorithm called YOLOv8-AFPN-M-C2f based on YOLOv8, offering swifter detection speeds, lower computational demands, and enhanced accuracy for workshop scenarios. This research innovates by substituting the head of YOLOv8 with the AFPN-M-C2f network, amplifying the pathways for feature vector propagation, and mitigating semantic discrepancies between non-adjacent feature layers. Additionally, the introduction of a superficial feature layer enriches surface feature information, augmenting the model's sensitivity to smaller objects. To assess the performance of the YOLOv8-AFPN-M-C2f model, this study conducted multiple experiments using a factory glove detection dataset compiled for this study. The results indicate that the enhanced YOLOv8 model surpasses other network models. Compared to the baseline YOLOv8 model, the refined version shows a 2.6% increase in mAP@50%, a 63.8% rise in FPS, and a 13% reduction in the number of parameters. This research contributes an effective solution for the detection of glove adherence.

RESUMEN

Telerehabilitation is important for post-stroke or post-surgery rehabilitation because the tasks it uses are reproducible. When combined with assistive technologies, such as robots, virtual reality, tracking systems, or a combination of them, it can also allow the recording of a patient's progression and rehabilitation monitoring, along with an objective evaluation. In this paper, we present the structure, from actors and functionalities to software and hardware views, of a novel framework that allows cooperation between patients and therapists. The system uses a computer-vision-based system named virtual glove for real-time hand tracking (40 fps), which is translated into a light and precise system. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that it gives the therapist quantitative, not only qualitative, information about the hand's mobility, for every hand joint separately, while at the same time providing control of the result of the rehabilitation by also quantitatively monitoring the progress of the hand mobility. Finally, it also offers a strategy for patient-therapist interaction and therapist-therapist data sharing.

In this study, we developed a new haptic-mixed reality intravenous (HMR-IV) needle insertion simulation system, providing a bimanual haptic interface integrated into a mixed reality system with programmable variabilities considering real clinical environments. The system was designed for nursing students or healthcare professionals to practice IV needle insertion into a virtual arm with unlimited attempts under various changing insertion conditions (e.g., skin: color, texture, stiffness, friction; vein: size, shape, location depth, stiffness, friction). To achieve accurate hand-eye coordination under dynamic mixed reality scenarios, two different haptic devices (Dexmo and Geomagic Touch) and a standalone mixed reality system (HoloLens 2) were integrated and synchronized through multistep calibration for different coordinate systems (real world, virtual world, mixed reality world, haptic interface world, HoloLens camera). In addition, force-profile-based haptic rendering proposed in this study was able to successfully mimic the real tactile feeling of IV needle insertion. Further, a global hand-tracking method, combining two depth sensors (HoloLens and Leap Motion), was developed to accurately track a haptic glove and simulate grasping a virtual hand with force feedback. We conducted an evaluation study with 20 participants (9 experts and 11 novices) to measure the usability of the HMR-IV simulation system with user performance under various insertion conditions. The quantitative results from our own metric and qualitative results from the NASA Task Load Index demonstrate the usability of our system.

BACKGROUND: This article presents the system architecture and validation of the NeuroSuitUp body-machine interface (BMI). The platform consists of wearable robotics jacket and gloves in combination with a serious game application for self-paced neurorehabilitation in spinal cord injury and chronic stroke. METHODS: The wearable robotics implement a sensor layer, to approximate kinematic chain segment orientation, and an actuation layer. Sensors consist of commercial magnetic, angular rate and gravity (MARG), surface electromyography (sEMG), and flex sensors, while actuation is achieved through electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and pneumatic actuators. On-board electronics connect to a Robot Operating System environment-based parser/controller and to a Unity-based live avatar representation game. BMI subsystems validation was performed using exercises through a Stereoscopic camera Computer Vision approach for the jacket and through multiple grip activities for the glove. Ten healthy subjects participated in system validation trials, performing three arm and three hand exercises (each 10 motor task trials) and completing user experience questionnaires. RESULTS: Acceptable correlation was observed in 23/30 arm exercises performed with the jacket. No significant differences in glove sensor data during actuation state were observed. No difficulty to use, discomfort, or negative robotics perception were reported. CONCLUSIONS: Subsequent design improvements will implement additional absolute orientation sensors, MARG/EMG based biofeedback to the game, improved immersion through Augmented Reality and improvements towards system robustness.
