RESUMEN

In recent years, many cities have taken measures to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs), an important precursor of ozone (O3), to alleviate O3 pollution in China. 116 VOC species were measured by online and offline methods in the urban area of Jiaozuo from May to October in 2021 to analyze the compositional characteristics. VOC sources were analyzed by a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, and the sensitivity of ozone generation was determined by ozone isopleth plotting research (OZIPR) simulation. The results showed that the average volume concentration of total VOCs was 30.54 ppbv and showed a bimodal feature due to the rush-hour traffic in the morning and at nightfall. The most dominant VOC groups were oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs, 29.3%) and alkanes (26.7%), and the most abundant VOC species were acetone and acetylene. However, based on the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) method, the major VOC groups in terms of ozone formation potential (OFP) contribution were OVOCs (68.09 µg/m3, 31.5%), aromatics (62.90 µg/m3, 29.1%) and alkene/alkynes (54.90 µg/m3, 25.4%). This indicates that the control of OVOCs, aromatics and alkene/alkynes should take priority. Five sources of VOCs were quantified by PMF, including fixed sources of fossil fuel combustion (27.8%), industrial processes (25.9%), vehicle exhaust (19.7%), natural and secondary formation (13.9%) and solvent usage (12.7%). The empirical kinetic modeling approach (EKMA) curve obtained by OZIPR on O3 exceedance days indicated that the O3 sensitivity varied in different months. The results provide theoretical support for O3 pollution prevention and control in Jiaozuo.

RESUMEN

Ozone (O3) pollution has emerged as a major air quality issue in China. Here we emphasize the great challenges in controlling O3 pollution by analyzing the recent experience of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China in reducing the autumn O3 peaks. Despite significant reductions in the concentration of O3 precursors, i.e., nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), regional O3 pollution in the PRD was largely worse in autumn 2019 than in autumn 2018. We found that the supra-regional and regional background concentrations of O3 increased significantly in the PRD in autumn 2019 due to increased concentrations of O3 in the vast surrounding areas. We also observed slight increases in the concentrations of PRD-regionally and Guangzhou-locally produced O3. A chemical box-model analysis confirmed a slight increase in the in-situ production of O3 and revealed that increased biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) and decreased NOx levels negated the effect of significant decrease in the anthropogenic VOCs. Taken together, these aspects exacerbated O3 pollution in the PRD region in autumn 2019 relative to autumn 2018. The findings from this study highlight the strong interactions of O3 pollution over multiple regions and the need for collaborative inter-regional efforts to control O3 pollution. The experience of PRD also underlines the key role of BVOCs and the importance of science-based strategies to decrease VOCs and NOx.

RESUMEN

Ozone (O3) isopleths describe the nonlinear responses of O3 concentrations to changes in nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and thus are pivotal to the determination of O3 control requirements. In this study, we innovatively use the Community Multiscale Air Quality model with the high-order decoupled direct method (CMAQ-HDDM) to simulate O3 pollution of China in 2017 and derive O3 isopleths for individual cities. Our simulation covering the entire China Mainland suggests severe O3 pollution as 97% of the residents experienced at least 1 day, in 2017, in excess of Chinese Level-II Ambient Air Quality Standards for O3 as 160 µg·m-3 (81.5 ppbV equally). The O3 responses to emissions of precursors vary widely across individual cities. Densely populated metropolitan areas such as Jing-Jin-Ji, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta are following NOX-saturated regimes, where a small amount of NOX reduction increases O3. Ambient O3 pollution in the eastern region generally is limited by VOCs, while in the west by NOX. The city-specific O3 isopleths generated in this study are instrumental in forming hybrid and differentiated strategies for O3 abatement in China.

RESUMEN

Sturgeon movements were monitored during a pile-driving operation. Fewer sturgeon were detected during pile driving and remained for a shorter time than during silent control periods. Moreover, the short time spent by sturgeon near pile driving suggests that they were unlikely to have reached the criterion of 187 dB re 1 µPa(2)·s cumulative sound exposure level. These results suggest that sturgeon are likely to avoid impact pile driving and not remain long enough to experience physiological effects, thus providing empirical evidence that the 206 dB re 1 µPa peak sound pressure level is the appropriate criterion for assessing the impacts of pile-driving noise on sturgeon.

RESUMEN

The interaction between transport and chemistry is pivotal for local ozone (O3) concentration, especially for a coastal region where the upstream sources might change diurnally. In the current emission control policy, most pollutants, such as particulate matter, SO2, NOx, and CO, decrease while the annual O3 trend might increase due to the complex feedbacks of precursors. In this study, we investigate the influence of transport upon the wintertime O3 diurnal trend over ZuoYing Kaohsiung, an urban coastal site in southern Taiwan, by constructing a two-dimensional numerical model coupling both physical mechanisms and core chemical processes and provide a feasible emission control strategy. The transport process (i.e., import vs. export) for the daytime is determined using the Leighton Ratio (Φ), the ratio of O3-production over O3-loss rate, under the pseudo-steady-state condition. Φ shows a deviation of -9 to +13% from the photo-stationary state, and experiences a transition from import effect before 10:15 to weakening import or net export effect afterward associated with a net O3 production as sea breeze starts developing. The significantly higher Φ derived from observation than from simulation by a factor of 1.35 might be resulted from the over-reported NO2 due to NOy contribution on the NO2 measurement, and the influence of aerosol and cloud possibly reducing ∼30% on applied NO2 photolysis rate constant, associated with aerosol optical depth of 0.75 ± 0.15 and single scattering albedo of 0.85 ± 0.15. In this studied NOx-saturated regime, the addition of sea breeze convergence over the land enhances the maximal O3 by ∼10%, mainly due to the O3 accumulation (∼88%). Furthermore, the ozone isopleth analysis as a function of non-methane hydrocarbons and NOx emissions provides an achievable strategy to decrease both maximum daily ozone and the increment of ozone from morning to maximum by reducing hydrocarbons and NOx emissions, which can also eliminate the additional nitrate contribution on the aerosols.

RESUMEN

Tropospheric ozone pollution has been continuously worsening in China during the past decade. Identification of long-term evolution of ozone sensitivity to precursors is essential to evaluating the impact of emission reduction measures on ozone pollution. Traditional observation-based model and 3-d numerical model are not suitable for analyzing long-term variation of ozone sensitivity to precursors. In this study, by transforming the conventional ozone isopleth plot into a VOCR isopleth plot in the functional space of NOx and ozone concentrations, we developed a novel approach to identify ozone sensitivity to precursors by simply using long-term monitoring data of ozone, NOx and temperature. This approach estimated ozone formation regimes (OFR) by ozone sensitivity to NOx and temperature separately, and the convergence of OFR serves as a way of mutual verification. We found that ozone formation was generally in the VOCR-limited or transitional regime in Shanghai, the largest metropolitan area in China. However, OFR was shifted to NOx-limited at Pudong station during 2017-19 due much to the stringent NOx emission control. OFR was also shifted to NOx-limited along with the increasing temperature. When temperature was over 30 °C, Shanghai was mostly in a NOx-limited OFR. This highlights that the NOx emission control measures need to be strengthened to reduce peak ozone levels more efficiently. Jinshan station exhibited a different trend with OFR shifted to VOCR-limited in 2017-19, which proved the effectiveness of VOCs emission control on petrochemical sector. However, OFR was shifted to NOx-limited when temperature was over 30 °C, suggesting more stringent VOCs emissions control should be targeted on days with higher temperature.

RESUMEN

To investigate photochemical ozone (O3) formation and provide localized control strategies, an intensive sampling of O3 and its precursors (i.e. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2)) were conducted at an urban site in Leshan, Sichuan province during 4-13 August 2019. The mixing ratios of O3, total VOCs (TVOCs) and NOx were 40.0 ± 5.3, 22.5 ± 2.6 and 14.6 ± 3.8 ppbv, respectively (±95% confidence intervals). O3 and its precursors existed a well negative correlation, indicating intensive local O3 formation. To further explore the O3-precursors relationship and observation-oriented O3 control strategies, a photochemical box model coupled with master chemical mechanism (PBM-MCM) was adapted. The relative incremental reactivity (RIR) calculated by model results showed that Leshan was in the VOCs-limited and O3 production was most sensitive to alkenes. Moreover, O3 isopleth diagram was drawn using the PBM-MCM simulation results and seven reduction scenarios were evaluated in Leshan. The reduction ratio of VOCs/NOx on 3:1 was proposed to be the best solution, which can be achieved effective reduction on local O3 formation. At last, since VOCs were the key precursors of O3 in Leshan, VOC sources and their potential contributions to O3 formation were investigated by using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Seven sources were identified, and traffic related emissions (including vehicle exhaust and gasoline evaporation, 29.9%) and fixed combustion (27.7%) had the large contribution to ambient VOCs. Among anthropogenic sources, fixed combustion and solvent usage in painting were the large contributors to O3 formation, accounting for 30.9% and 18.3%, respectively, which should have high priorities on source reduction. This study provides scientific advices for future O3 pollution control strategies in Leshan, which can be extended to other cities.

RESUMEN

A variety of methods are commonly used to quantify animal home ranges using location data acquired with telemetry. High-volume location data from global positioning system (GPS) technology provide researchers the opportunity to identify various intensities of use within home ranges, typically quantified through utilization distributions (UDs). However, the wide range of variability evident within UDs constructed with modern home range estimators is often overlooked or ignored during home range comparisons, and challenges may arise when summarizing distributional shifts among multiple UDs. We describe an approach to gain additional insight into home range changes by comparing UDs across isopleths and summarizing comparisons into meaningful results. To demonstrate the efficacy of this approach, we used GPS location data from 16 bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) to identify distributional changes before and after habitat alterations, and we discuss advantages in its application when comparing home range size, overlap, and joint-space use. We found a consistent increase in bighorn sheep home range size when measured across home range levels, but that home range overlap and similarity values decreased when examined at increasing core levels. Our results highlight the benefit of conducting multiscale assessments when comparing distributions, and we encourage researchers to expand comparative home range analyses to gain a more comprehensive evaluation of distributional changes and to evaluate comparisons across home range levels.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Global positioning system (GPS) technology for monitoring home range and movements of wildlife has resulted in prohibitively large sample sizes of locations for traditional estimators of home range. We used area-under-the-curve to explore the fit of 8 estimators of home range to data collected with both GPS and concurrent very high frequency (VHF) technology on a terrestrial mammal, the Florida panther Puma concolor coryi, to evaluate recently developed and traditional estimators. RESULTS: Area-under-the-curve was the highest for Florida panthers equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology compared to VHF technology. For our study animal, estimators of home range that incorporated a temporal component to estimation performed better than traditional first- and second-generation estimators. CONCLUSIONS: Comparisons of fit of home range contours with locations collected would suggest that use of VHF technology is not as accurate as GPS technology to estimate size of home range for large mammals. Estimators of home range collected with GPS technology performed better than those estimated with VHF technology regardless of estimator used. Furthermore, estimators that incorporate a temporal component (third-generation estimators) appeared to be the most reliable regardless of whether kernel-based or Brownian bridge-based algorithms were used and in comparison to first- and second-generation estimators. We defined third-generation estimators of home range as any estimator that incorporates time, space, animal-specific parameters, and habitat. Such estimators would include movement-based kernel density, Brownian bridge movement models, and dynamic Brownian bridge movement models among others that have yet to be evaluated.
