RESUMEN

Accurate prediction and measurement of yield stress are crucial for optimizing sludge treatment and disposal. However, the differences and applicability of various methods for measuring yield stress are subjects of ongoing debate. Meanwhile, literature on measuring sludge yield stress is limited to low solid concentrations (TS <10%), understanding and studying the yield stress of medium to high solid concentration sludge is crucial due to increasingly stringent standards for sludge treatment and disposal. So, this study employed a rotational rheometer to measure sludge yield stress across a wide range of TS (4-50%) using steady shear, dynamic oscillatory shear, and transient shear. The study derived significant conclusions by comparing and summarizing the applicability and limitations of each testing method: Dynamic oscillatory shear methods, including G'-σ curve method, γ-σ curve method, and G**γc method can measure sludge yield stress ranging from 4% to 40% TS, while other methods are restricted to low or limited solid concentrations; The G' = G″ method, utilizing the intersection of G' and G″ curves, consistently yields the highest value for yield stress when 4%≤ TS ≤ 12%; The rotational rheometer cannot measure sludge yield stress when the solid concentration exceeds 40% TS; The relationship between sludge yield stress and solid concentration is stronger as a power-law for TS ≤ 25%, transitioning to linear for higher concentrations (28%≤ TS <40%). This study systematically explores the applicability and limitations of various measurement methods for characterizing sludge yield stress across a wide range of solid concentrations, providing valuable guidance for scientific measurement and highlighting challenging research issues.

The utilization of municipal sludge as a seed sludge for initiating the autotrophic nitrogen removal (ANR) process presents a challenge due to the negligible abundance of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB). Here, a computational fluid dynamics model was used to simulate sludge volume fraction and sludge particle velocity. A high-height-to-diameter-ratio airlift inner-circulation partition bioreactor (HHAIPBR) was operated for 175 d to enrich AnAOB from municipal sludge, and the performance of the ANR process was investigated. The start-up period of HHAIPBR inoculated with municipal sludge required approximately 69 d. A high nitrogen removal performance, with a mean total nitrogen removal efficiency of 82.1%, was obtained for 1 month. The simulation results validated the presence of sludge circulation and revealed the distribution characteristics of dissolved oxygen inside the reactor, further supporting the promotion of sludge granulation via the high height-to-diameter ratio. Nitrosomonas (3.31%) of Proteobacteria and Candidatus Brocadia (6.56%) of Planctomycetota were dominant in the HHAIPBR. This study presents a viable approach for the industrial cultivation of anammox sludge and the rapid start-up of the partial nitritation-anammox system.

The aim of this study was to assess effects of MnO2 addition (CK-0%, T1-2% and T2-5%) on humification and bacterial community during municipal sludge (MS) composting. The results suggested that MnO2 addition inhibited the growth of Nitrospira but stimulated Nonomuraea, Actinomadura, Streptomyces and Thermopolyspora, facilitating the lignocellulose degradation and humification with the increase in organic matter degradation by 13.8%-19.2% and humic acid content by 10.9%-20.6%. Compared to CK, the abundances of exoglucanase (EC:3.2.1.91), endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (EC:3.2.1.136) and endomannanase (EC:3.2.1.78) increased by 88-99, 52-66 and 4-15 folds, respectively. However, 5%-MnO2 induced the enrichment of Mizugakiibacter that harms the environment of agricultural production. The addition of 2%-MnO2 was recommended for MS composting. Furthermore, metabolic function analysis indicated that MnO2 addition altered amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, especially enhancing propanoate metabolism and butanoate metabolism but inhibiting citrate cycle. Structural equation modeling revealed that Nonomuraea and Actinomadura were the main drivers for lignocellulose degradation. This study provided theoretical guidance in regulating humification via MnO2 for MS composting.

To investigate the influence of carbonization process parameters on the characteristics of municipal sludge carbonization products, this study selected carbonization temperatures of 300-700 °C and carbonization times of 0.5-1.5 h to carbonize municipal sludge. The results showed that with an increase in temperature and carbonization time, the sludge was carbonized more completely, and the structure and performance characteristics of the sludge changed significantly. Organic matter was continuously cracked, the amorphous nature of the material was reduced, its morphology was transformed into an increasing number of regular crystalline structures, and the content of carbon continued to decrease, from the initial 52.85 to 38.77%, while the content of inorganic species consisting continued to increase. The conductivity was reduced by 87.8%, and the degree of conversion of salt ions into their residual and insoluble states was significant. Natural water absorption in the sludge decreased from 8.13 to 1.29%, and hydrophobicity increased. The dry-basis higher calorific value decreased from 8,703 to 3,574 kJ/kg. Heavy metals were concentrated by a factor of 2-3, but the content of the available state was very low. The results of this study provide important technological support for the selection of suitable carbonization process conditions and for resource utilization.

Fluctuation disturbance of organic loading rate (OLR) is common in actual anaerobic digestion (AD), but its effects on AD of municipal sludge gets little attention. This study investigated the responses of reactor performance and active microbial community in mesophilic and thermophilic AD of municipal sludge before, during and after OLR periodic fluctuation disturbance. The performance of both reactors were similar before and after disturbance although some parameter values changed during the disturbance, which indicated their enough buffer capacity to OLR periodic fluctuation. Different microbial community at RNA level was observed in the two reactors. When the OLR disturbance commenced, the microbial community changed greatly in thermophilic AD. Error and attack tolerance of the microbial network was analyzed in order to learn the response mechanisms to OLR disturbance. The results assisted that the thermophilic microbial community was more vulnerable, but the reactor performance of which could be maintained using the functional redundancy strategy under OLR fluctuation disturbance.

Municipal sledge water is a combination of residential wastewater, industrial effluent, and precipitation water. The water quality parameters analyses results demonstrated that most of the parameters (pH: 5.6 ± 0.3, Turbidity: 102.31 ± 2.8 mg L-1, TH: 946.38 ± 3.7 mg L-1, BOD: 295.63 ± 5.4 mg L-1, COD: 482.41 ± 4.9 mg L-1, Ca: 278.74 ± 1.8 mg L-1, SO42-: 559.64 ± 11.4 mg L-1, Cd: 18.56 ± 1.37 mg L-1, Cr: 31.25 ± 1.49 mg L-1, Pb: 21.45 ± 1.12 mg L-1, and Zn: 48.65 ± 1.56 mg L-1) were considerably increased in quantities with slightly acidic in condition. The in-vitro phycoremediation study was carried out for two weeks with pre-identified Scenedesmus sp. Biomass in different groups of treatments (A, B, C, and D). Interestingly, most of the physicochemical parameters were significantly reduced in group C (4 × 103 cells mL-1) treated municipal sludge water in a shorter treatment period than in the other treatment groups. The phycoremediation percentage of group C were found as pH: 32.85%, EC: 52.81%, TDS: 31.32%, TH: 25.58%, BOD: 34.02%, COD: 26.47%, Ni: 58.94%, Ca: 44.75%, K: 42.74%, Mg: 39.52%, Na: 36.55%, Fe: 68%, Cl: 37.03%, SO42-: 16.77%, PO43-: 43.15%, F: 55.55%, Cd:44.88%, Cr:37.21%, Pb:43.8%, and Zn:33.17%. These findings suggest that increased biomass from Scenedesmus sp. can be used to significantly remediate municipal sludge water and that the obtained biomass and treated sludge can be used as feedstock's for bio fuel as well as bio fertilizer, respectively.

The complexity of municipal sludge dewatering is a bottleneck problem limiting resource utilization. In this paper, adding municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) to municipal sludge for enhanced dewatering was applied, while the chlorine salt in MSWI FA was simultaneously removed using water in municipal sludge. The effects of different dosages and chemical components of MSWI FA on municipal sludge dewatering, and the removal effect of municipal sludge washing on Cl element were investigated. The results showed that the municipal sludge's specific resistance to filtration after co-treatment was significantly reduced, and more hydrophobic channels were formed in the vacuum suction filtration of the treated municipal sludge, conducive to efficient water removal. The moisture content of municipal sludge was reduced from 96.0% to 48.3%, and the moisture reduction rate increased from 17.7% to 32.1%. The chemical composition of MSWI FA could effectively promote the dewatering of municipal sludge, among which CaO was the best, followed by CaCl2 and NaCl, and KCl was the worst. Simultaneously, the municipal sludge showed a good effect on removing Cl from MSWI FA. The minimum Cl content in the mixture after Co-treatment is 1.5%. These results could provide a new way to dispose of MSWI FA and municipal sludge.

To investigate the temporal behaviors of heavy metals in sewage sludge in typical cities of industrial, industrial-agricultural, agricultural, or energy focused. Samples were collected every 10 days for a period of 1 year in four types of cities of Lanzhou, Tianshui, Qingyang, and Zhangye. The average annual values for all four cities were Cd (1.59-3.16 mg/kg), Pb (41.9-55.1 mg/kg), Cr (63.8-92.0 mg/kg), Cu (75.7-92.6 mg/kg), Zn (498-612 mg/kg), and Ni (3.66-4.25 mg/kg). The highest values were observed in June for Cd, Cr, and Zn, at Lanzhou and Tianshui. At Qingyang and Zhangye, the Cd, Cr, and Zn contents were stable throughout the year. There was a similar monthly change among the four cities regarding the levels of Ni content, and it was far below the background value. The monthly fluctuations in Cd, Pb, Cr, and Zn are mainly due to street dust effect. For cities with a developed industry, the impact of street dust during the first rains of the year on sewage sludge's heavy metal content must be highlighted as being of particular importance.

The thermochemical and kinetic behavior of co-combustion of coal, municipal sludge (MS) and their blends at different ratios were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Simulation experiments were performed in a vacuum tube furnace to determine the conversion behavior of toxic elements. The results show that the combustion processes of the blends of coal and municipal sludge are divided into three stages and the combustion curves of the blends are located between those of individual coal and municipal sludge samples. The DTGmax of the sample with 10% sludge addition reaches a maximum at the heating rate of 20 °C/min, indicating that the combustion characteristics of coal can be improved during co-combustion. Strong interactions were observed between coal and municipal sludge during the co-combustion. The volatilization rates of toxic elements decrease with an increasing proportion of sludge in the blends during co-combustion, which indicates that the co-combustion of coal and sludge can effectively reduce the volatilization rate of toxic elements. The study reflects the potential of municipal sludge as a blended fuel and the environmental effects of co-combustion of coal and municipal sludge.

To increase the degree of immobilization of heavy metals subjected to sludge pyrolysis, we investigated the effects of pretreating sludge with Ochrobactrum supplementation on the immobilization of chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu) during sludge pyrolysis. The sequential extraction procedure was used to test the metallic forms of Cr and Cu. The immobilization of Cr and Cu was characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, etc. Results show that: 1) the addition of Ochrobactrum (1-8%) can accelerate the mineralization process in blank sludge and can accelerate the conversion of the oxidizable forms of Cr and Cu into the residual forms subjected to pyrolysis; 2) pretreatment with Ochrobactrum supplementation can inhibit the volatilization of Cr and Cu during sludge pyrolysis, particularly in the case of a high concentration of Cu. Notably, the pretreatment with Ochrobactrum can reduce 20.38-85.09% of the potential ecological risk of Cr and Cu. The pretreatment with Ochrobactrum contributes to the immobilization of Cr and Cu subjected to sludge pyrolysis and thus can prevent pollution of the environment. The results of this study can be used for harmless disposal of municipal sludge.

In this study, we analyzed the effects of sludge aging pre-treatment on the stabilization mechanisms of heavy metals during sludge pyrolysis. First, the form of copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) was conducted using the sequential extraction procedure proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). The stabilization mechanisms for the sludge pyrolysis of Cu and Cr were then analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results indicate the following: 1) with aging pre-treatment, the improvement in adsorption performance and the formation of newly crystallized materials, like polyhydroxy copper phosphate and chromium phosphate minerals, occur concurrently with the stabilization of heavy metals during pyrolysis; 2) after four weeks of aging, active functional groups like amino and carboxyl groups were significantly sharpened, and caused sustained complexation of the heavy metals. Results suggested that the aging pre-treatment aided the stabilization of heavy metals during sludge pyrolysis. Notably, the aging effect can decrease the potential ecological risk of heavy metals.

Treatment of emerging contaminants, such as antimicrobials, has become a priority topic for environmental protection. As a persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative antimicrobial, the accumulation of triclosan (TCS) in wastewater sludge is creating a potential risk to human and ecosystem health via the agricultural use of biosolids. The impact of microwave (MW) pretreatment on TCS levels in municipal sludge is unknown. This study, for the first time, evaluated how MW pretreatment (80 and 160 °C) itself and together with anaerobic digestion (AD) under various sludge retention times (SRTs: 20, 12, and 6 days) and temperatures (35 and 55 °C) can affect the levels of TCS in municipal sludge. TCS and its potential transformation products were analyzed with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. Significantly higher TCS concentrations were detected in sludge sampled from the plant in colder compared to those in warmer temperatures. MW temperature did not have a discernible impact on TCS reduction from undigested sludge. However, AD studies indicated that compared to controls (no pretreatment), MW irradiation could make TCS more amenable to biodegradation (up to 46%), especially at the elevated pretreatment and digester temperatures. At different SRTs studied, TCS levels in the thermophilic digesters were considerably lower than that of in the mesophilic digesters.

Municipal sludge is difficult to treat and dispose of because of its high moisture content (MC) and volume. In this study, a novel dewatering method that utilizes ultrahigh pressure filtration (UHPF) and thin-cake-press (TCP) coupled with microwave pretreatment was proposed to reduce the MC of sludge cake. The influence of microwave contact time (MCT), microwave intensity (MI), initial MC of sludge, dewatering time, applied pressure and sludge weight (Ws) on the MC of a sludge cake was investigated by the single-factor experiment. Moreover, a water discharge path model was developed to understand the dewatering mechanism and explain the relationship between thickness and MC of the cake. The key factors affecting the MC of the cake were explored by the orthogonal experiment. The experimental results showed that microwave irradiation could effectively improve the dewatering performance and reduce the MC of the sludge cake. The MC of the cake reached its lowest value of 28% at MCT of 120 s and MI of 400 W, which is much lower than the value obtained by the traditional dewatering method. Among the parameters mentioned above, Ws has the most significant influence on MC because a large amount of sludge leads to a thicker cake, which seriously hampers the flow of filtrate and inevitably increases the MC of the cake.

Electrolysis is a promising technology to improve sludge dewaterability efficiently with negligible environmental impact. To intensify the electrolytic efficiency, the effect of electrolytes (NaCl, Na2SO4, NaNO3, and NaClO4) on electrolysis pretreatment of municipal sludge and its mechanisms was investigated using Ti/PbO2 electrodes. The electrolytes, which enhanced the production of oxidative radicals, showed a significant synergetic effect in reducing the capillary suction time (CST) of sludge. NaCl was distinguished from the other electrolytes since it formed a large amount of active chlorine species, which oxidized the sludge cells to improve the sludge dewaterability. The surface morphologies as well as the soluble proteins and polysaccharides were analyzed to unravel the underlying mechanisms of sludge dewaterability. Additionally, an economic assessment showed that NaCl addition in the electrolysis pretreatment can be a suitable technique for enhancing municipal sludge dewaterability.

This paper presents results for a comprehensive study that compares the performance of three electricity-based thermal pretreatment methods for improving the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion (AD) to process municipal wastewater sludge. The study compares thermal pretreatment using conventional heating (CH), microwave (MW), and radio frequency (RF) heating techniques. The effectiveness of the pretreatment methods was assessed in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biopolymers solubilization, AD bioenergy production, input electrical energy, and overall net energy production of the sequential pretreatment/AD process. The heating applicators for the bench-scale testing consisted of a custom-built pressure-sealed heating vessel for CH experiments, an off-the-shelf programmable MW oven operating at a frequency of 2.45 GHz for MW heating experiments, and a newly developed 1 kW RF heating system operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz for RF heating experiments. Under identical thermal profiles, all three thermal pretreatment methods achieved similar sludge disintegration in terms of COD and biopolymer solubilization as well as AD bioenergy production (p-value > 0.05). According to the energy assessment results, the application of CH and MW pretreatments resulted in overall negative energy production, while positive net energy production was obtained through the sequential pretreatment/AD process utilizing RF pretreatment.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns that fertilization using sludge in semi-arid areas, where water is limiting, will compound the effect of drought, resulting in the decline of yield from potential salt accumulation. This study investigated impacts of annual sludge application at 0, 4, 8 and 16 Mg ha-1 on weeping lovegrass hay yield, crude protein (CP) content, rainfall use efficiency (RUE), nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and trace metal uptake over eight consecutive years. RESULTS: Both hay yield and RUE increased by 5-53% as the sludge rate increased. Hay yield was highest (13.3 Mg ha-1 ) during the wet season and RUE (27.1 kg mm-1 ) during the dry season. RUE was highest at sludge rates of 16 Mg ha-1 and NUE at 4 Mg ha-1 . Similarly, municipal sludge application increased CP content as well as crop Cr and Zn uptake from the 16 Mg ha-1 treatment. CONCLUSION: Results from this study indicated that eight consecutive years of treated municipal sludge application increased weeping lovegrass hay yield, CP content and RUE. Similarly, trace metal uptake by crop did not differ between the zero control and the 16 Mg ha-1 treatment, except for Zn and Cr, which showed a slight increment. Nonetheless, all trace metals remained well below the maximum tolerable dietary concentrations for domestic animals. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

Primary Fine-Sieved Solids (PFSS) are produced from wastewater by the use of micro-sieves, in place of primary clarification. Biosolids is considered as a nuisance product, however, it contains significant amounts of energy, which can be utilized by biological (anaerobic digestion) or thermal (combustion or gasification) processes. In the present study, an semi-industrial scale UHT rotary kiln gasifier, operating with electric energy, was employed for the gasification of PFSS (at 17% moisture content), collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Two gasification temperatures (950 and 1050 °C) had been tested, with minimal differences, with respect to syngas yield. The system appears to reach steady state after about 30-40 min from start up. The composition of the syngas at near steady state was measured approximately as 62.4% H2, 30.0% CO, 2.4% CH4 and 3.4% CO2, plus 1.8% unidentified gases. The potential for electric energy production from the syngas produced is theoretically greater than the electric energy required for gasification. Theoretically, approximately 3.8 MJ/kg PFSS of net electric energy may be produced. However, based on the measured electric energy consumption, and assuming that all the syngas produced is used for electric energy production, addition of excess electric energy (about 0.43 MJ/kg PFSS) is required to break even. The latter is probably due to heat losses to the environment, during the heating process. With the improvement of energy efficiency, the process can be self sustained, form the energy point of view.

Sewage sludge management is an energy intensive process. Anaerobic digestion contributes to energy efficiency improvement but is limited by the biological process. A review has been conducted prior to experimentation in order to evaluate the mass and energy balances on anaerobic digestion followed by gasification of digested sludge. The purpose was to improve energy recovery and reuse. Calculations were based on design parameters and tests that are conducted with the anaerobic digester of a local wastewater treatment plant and a small commercial gasification system. Results showed a very significant potential of energy recovery. More than 90% of the energy content from sludge was extracted. Also, approximately the same amount of energy would be transferred in both directions between the digester (biogas) and the gasifier (thermal energy). This extraction resulted in the same use of biogas as the reference scenario but final product was a totally dry biochar, which represented a fraction of the initial mass. Phosphorus was concentrated and significantly preserved. This analysis suggests that anaerobic digestion followed by dehydration, drying and gasification could be a promising and viable option for energy and nutrient recovery from municipal sludge in replacement of conventional paths.

A 20-day sludge biodrying process was coupled with photocatalysis to improve biodrying efficiency and investigate the effect of photocatalysis on biodegradation. After biodrying, the moisture content in the coupled photocatalytic group (TCA) and the control group (TUCA) decreased from 63.61% to 50.82% and 52.94%, respectively, and the volatile solids content decreased from 73.18% to 63.42% and 64.39%, respectively. Neutral proteinase activity decreased by 9.38% and 28.69%, and lipase activity decreased by 6.12% and 26.17%, respectively, indicating that photocatalysis helped maintain neutral proteinase and lipase activities. The Chao1 and Shannon indices showed that photocatalysis increased fungal diversity and reduced bacterial richness and diversity. The ß diversity clustering analysis indicated that the bacterial community structure during the thermophilic phase in TCA differed from that in TUCA. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes annotation showed that photocatalysis has the potential to promote the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies. Biodrying coupled with photocatalysis can improve the dewatering of sludge without negatively affecting biodegradation.

Municipal sludge generated from wastewater treatment plants can cause a serious environmental and economic burden. A novel hybrid conditioning strategy was developed to enhance the dewatering performance of sludge, employing 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([C4mim][CF3SO3]) treatment combined with H2SO4 acidification. Following conditioning, the capillary suction time ( CST normalized ), the specific resistance of filtration (SRF), and moisture content of the treated sludge were decreased to 1.99 ± 0.24 (s·L/g TSS), 1.33 ± 0.05 (1012 m/kg), and 72.01 ± 0.94%, respectively. The results were superior to those achieved with sludge treated solely by H2SO4 acidification or [C4mim][CF3SO3] alone. The biomacromolecules within the sludge flocs were dissolved by [C4mim][CF3SO3], while simultaneously, the microorganisms were inactivated. Consequently, the colloidal-like structures of the sludge flocs were destroyed. Additionally, the ionizable functional groups of the biomacromolecules were instantly protonated by the introduced H+ ions, and their negative charges were neutralized during the H2SO4 acidification process. The presence of H+ ions promoted the weakening of electrostatic repulsion between the sludge flocs. As a result, an enhancement of sludge dewaterability was obtained after treatment with [C4mim][CF3SO3] and H2SO4 acidification. The finding of the intensification mechanism of sludge dewaterability brought by hybrid treatment of acidification and [C4mim][CF3SO3] provides novel insights into the field of sludge disposal.
