Significant progress has been made in the field of micro/nano-retinal implant technologies. However, the high pixel range, power leakage, reliability, and lifespan of retinal implants are still questionable. Active implantable devices are safe, cost-effective, and reliable. Although a device that can meet basic safety requirements set by the Food and Drug Administration and the European Union is reliable for long-term use and provides control on current and voltage parameters, it will be expensive and cannot be commercially successful. This study proposes an economical, fully controllable, and configurable wireless communication system based on field-programmable gated arrays (FPGAs) that were designed with the ability to cope with the issues that arise in retinal implantation. This system incorporates hexagonal biphasic stimulation pulses generated by a digital controller that can be fully controlled using an external transmitter. The integration of two separate domain analog systems and a digital controller based on FPGAs is proposed in this study. The system was also implemented on a microchip and verified using in vitro results.

This paper presents an adaptive control and communication protocol (ACCP) for the ultra-low power simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system for sensor applications. The SWIPT system-related operations depend on harvested radio frequency (RF) energy from the ambient environment. The necessary power for SWIPT system operation is not always available and it depends on the available RF energy in the ambient environment, transmitted RF power from the SWIPT transmitter, and the distance from the transmitter and channel conditions. Thus, an efficient control and communication protocol is required which can control the SWIPT system for sensor applications which mainly consists of a transmitter and a receiver. Multiple data frame structures are used to optimize the exchange of bits for the communication and control of the SWIPT system. Both SWIPT transmitter and receiver are capable of using multiple modulation schemes which can be switched depending on the channel condition and the available RF energy in the ambient environment. This provides support for automatic switching between the time switching scheme and power splitting scheme for the distribution of received RF power in the SWIPT receiver. It also adjusts the digital clock frequency at the SWIPT receiver according to the harvested power level to optimize the power consumption. The SWIPT receiver controller with ACCP is implemented in 180 nm CMOS technology. The RF frequency of the SWIPT operation is 5.8 GHz. Digital clock frequency at the SWIPT receiver can be adjusted between 32 kHz and 2 MHz which provides data rates from 8 to 500 kbps, respectively. The power consumption and area utilization are 12.3 µW and 0.81 mm².

In this article, a highly reliable radio frequency (RF) wake-up receiver (WuRx) is presented for electronic toll collection (ETC) applications. An intelligent digital controller (IDC) is proposed as the final stage for improving WuRx reliability and replacing complex analog blocks. With IDC, high reliability and accuracy are achieved by sensing and ensuring the successive, configurable number of wake-up signal cycles before enabling power-hungry RF transceiver. The IDC and range communication (RC) oscillator current consumption is reduced by a presented self-hibernation technique during the non-wake-up period. For accommodating wake-up signal frequency variation and enhancing WuRx accuracy, a digital hysteresis is incorporated. To avoid uncertain conditions during poor and false wake-up, a watch-dog timer for IDC self-recovery is integrated. During wake-up, the digital controller consumes 34.62 nW power and draws 38.47 nA current from a 0.9 V supply. In self-hibernation mode, its current reduces to 9.7 nA. It is fully synthesizable and needs 809 gates for its implementation in a 130 nm CMOS process with a 94 × 82 µm2 area. The WuRx measured power consumption is 2.48 µW, has -46 dBm sensitivity, and a 0.484 mm² chip area.

Recently, piezoresistive-type (PRT) pressure sensors have been gaining attention in variety of applications due to their simplicity, low cost, miniature size and ruggedness. The electrical behavior of a pressure sensor is highly dependent on the temperature gradient which seriously degrades its reliability and reduces measurement accuracy. In this paper, polynomial-based adaptive digital temperature compensation is presented for automotive piezoresistive pressure sensor applications. The non-linear temperature dependency of a pressure sensor is accurately compensated for by incorporating opposite characteristics of the pressure sensor as a function of temperature. The compensation polynomial is fully implemented in a digital system and a scaling technique is introduced to enhance its accuracy. The resource sharing technique is adopted for minimizing controller area and power consumption. The negative temperature coefficient (NTC) instead of proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT) or complementary to absolute temperature (CTAT) is used as the temperature-sensing element since it offers the best temperature characteristics for grade 0 ambient temperature operating range according to the automotive electronics council (AEC) test qualification ACE-Q100. The shared structure approach uses an existing analog signal conditioning path, composed of a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). For improving the accuracy over wide range of temperature, a high-resolution sigma-delta ADC is integrated. The measured temperature compensation accuracy is within ±0.068% with full scale when temperature varies from -40 °C to 150 °C according to ACE-Q100. It takes 37 µs to compute the temperature compensation with a clock frequency of 10 MHz. The proposed technique is integrated in an automotive pressure sensor signal conditioning chip using a 180 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process.

This paper presents a fully integrated photodiode-based low-power and low-mismatch stimulator for a subretinal prosthesis. It is known that a subretinal prosthesis achieves 1600-pixel stimulators on a limited single-chip area that is implanted beneath the bipolar cell layer. However, the high-density pixels cause high power dissipation during stimulation and high fabrication costs because of special process technologies such as the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor CMOS image sensor process. In addition, the many residual charges arising from the high-density pixel stimulation have deleterious effects, such as tissue damage and electrode corrosion, on the retina tissue. In this work, we adopted a switched-capacitor current mirror technique for the single-pixel stimulator (SPStim) that enables low power consumption and low mismatch in the subretinal device. The customized P+/N-well photodiode used to sense the incident light in the SPStim also reduces the fabrication cost. The 64-pixel stimulators are fabricated in a standard 0.35-µm CMOS process along with a global digital controller, which occupies a chip area of 4.3 × 3.2 mm² and are ex-vivo demonstrated using a dissected pig eyeball. According to measured results, the SPStim accomplishes a maximum biphasic pulse amplitude of 143 µA, which dissipates an average power of 167 µW in a stimulation period of 5 ms, and an average mismatch of 1.12 % between the cathodic and anodic pulses.

Bioreactors are commonly used apparatuses generally equipped with several built-in specifications for the investigation of biological treatment studies. Each bioreactor test may require different types of specialty such as heating, agitation, re-circulation and some further technologies like online sensoring. Even thought, there are many ready-to-use fabricated bioreactors available in the market with a cost usually over than 1000 , it is often not possible to access those advanced (but inflexible) systems for many students, young-researchers or small-scale private R&D companies. In this work, a new low cost (≈100) packed-bed anaerobic bioreactor was developed, and all methodological details including open-source coding and 3D design files are shared with informative descriptions. Some preliminary tests were conducted to verify the developed bioreactor system's credibility in terms of leak-tightness, accurate gas monitoring, temperature controlling, and mass balance (COD-eq) coverage, which all have shown a very promising performance.â¢A consistent model bioreactor that will be called as "tetrapod" was developed for anaerobic treatment of challenging substrates such as pyrolytic liquids.â¢Coarse biochar grains were used as an organic packing material to stimulate the microbial bioconversion by increasing the active surface area for the attached-growth anaerobic mixed microbial culture (MMC).â¢An open-source Arduino based digital gasometer was developed for online monitoring of biogas change in the lab-scale system. Arduino was also used as a digital controller for maintaining pulse-mode liquid recirculation of the bioreactor.

INTRODUCTION: A methodology was developed for implementing closed-loop control algorithms and for evaluating the behavior of a system, considering certain component restrictions used in laboratory implementation. METHODS: Mathematical functions representing a model of the biological system were used for knee extension/flexion movements. A Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller and another one using the root locus method were designed to control a patient’s leg position by applying functional electrical stimulation (FES). The controllers were simulated in Matlab and ISIS Proteus. After the simulations were performed, the codes were embedded in a microcontroller, and tests were conducted on a paraplegic volunteer. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that ISIS Proteus software resources have been used prior to implementing a closed-loop system designed to control the leg position of patients. RESULTS:This method obviates the application of initial controller tests directly to patients. The response obtained in the experiment with a paraplegic patient complied with the specifications set in terms of the steady-state error, the settling time, and the percentage overshoot. The proposed procedure was successfully applied for the implementation of a controller used to control the leg position of a paraplegic person by electrical muscle stimulation. CONCLUSION:The methodology presented in this manuscript can contribute to the implementation of analog and digital controllers because hardware limitations are typically not taken into account in the design of controllers.
