RESUMEN

Since the inception of the Higher Education Opportunity Act in 2008, there has been an increase in the number of post-secondary education institutions in the United States that have established inclusive postsecondary programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities to attend college and achieve higher levels of employment. Previous studies have investigated the development and outcomes of these programs, however, less has been explored related to professors' experiences and perceptions regarding this unique student population, particularly within Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI). The current study focused on professors teaching inclusive courses within a new Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary Program at a HSI and aimed to identify their perceptions and experiences related to instructing students with intellectual disabilities. Six professors participated in pre- and post-semester in-depth interviews. Findings from applied thematic analysis included: (a) barriers to success; (b) academic supports and strategies; (c) successful outcomes and (d) considerations for future, related programming.

RESUMEN

In 2019, the nursing sciences section of the Conseil national des universités des disciplines de santé was created. One of its missions is to evaluate the applications of candidates wishing to qualify as university professors and associate professors. Qualification authorizes the applicant to apply a competitive examination for the position of university professor or assistant professor at a French university offering a position. The members of the section must assess whether the requirements in terms of research, teaching, and expertise have been met by the candidate so that they can sit the competitive examination. As a result, there are a number of requirements, which it is useful to reiterate in order to enhance the quality of future applications. Only those requirements relating to qualification as a associate professor will be covered here.

Learning-focussed educational models require the development of pedagogical, methodological, assessment and technological competences among the faculty community. The COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the need for this training. This study evaluates the impact of the training project "Educate to Transform" on teacher attitudes, knowledge and on the implementation of innovative teaching methodologies. There were 695 faculty participants in the program conducted at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV). Participants included full-time professors (FULL-PROF) and part-time professors (PART-PROF). The measurement instrument was validated using the entire sample and a subsample of 357 participants was used to analyse the impact of the program (pre and post measurement). Professor attitudes and knowledge of or familiarity with innovative methodologies and their application in the classroom were evaluated. The findings show that the program improved the attitudes of teachers towards innovation, raised the level of awareness and number of methodologies implemented in the classroom. The methodology towards more experiential and collaborative learning is effective in transforming teaching practice. Furthermore, the implementation of the program through the CANVAS platform, making teachers live the experience as learners, seems to have contributed to improve the teachers' attitude towards the LMS. The only difference found among the participants was a worse attitude towards innovation on the part of medical teachers, with a clearly differentiated profile of teachers and students, as well as a greater implementation of active methodologies by teachers with a lower teaching load. Overall, it may be concluded that the program achieved its proposed objectives.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify which dimensions of faculty members' evaluation criteria changed from the viewpoint of students after their graduation, and to determine the effective factors in changing their viewpoints. METHODS: This study was carried out through the qualitative approach and with conventional content analysis method. The target population included all graduates who accomplished their job duty and had a working experience of 2-4 years. A purposive sampling technique with maximum variation used to recruit and interview. Twenty-eight in depth semi-structured interviews were conducted in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (TBZMED), Iran. The data were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS: The data analysis led to the development of two themes and 8 categories. The two types of changes in the viewpoint that were experienced by graduates in evaluating the performance of faculty members were: individual and environmental. Individual factors included the responsibility of graduates, social maturity, personal experience, intellectual maturity, understanding the causes of teachers' behaviors, and understanding the importance of evaluation. The environmental factors were applicability of learning experiences in the work environment and workplace conditions. CONCLUSION: From the perspective of graduates, the importance of some evaluation criteria in the educational, professional, and personal dimensions changed over their study period due to some factors, such as personal experience, experiences in the work environment, workplace conditions, and intellectual maturity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to measure the burden of burnout in a sample of healthcare workers (HCWs) consisting of general practitioners, professors from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, nurses, medical students and nursing students. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional questionnaire survey. METHODS: A descriptive analysis was carried out, using averages, medians, standard deviations (SD) and ranges for quantitative variables. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses were also performed. RESULTS: In total, 535 HCWs completed the survey. Multivariate analysis shows that increasing age (ß = -0.183; P = 0.047), being a university professor (ß = -0.118; P = 0.001), having a high physical score (ß = -0.370; P < 0.001) and a high mental score (ß = -0.574; P < 0.001) resulted in less personal burnout. Low work burnout was associated with being a student (ß = -0.144; P < 0.001), a university professor (ß = -0.146; P < 0.001), having a high physical score (ß = -0.366; P < 0.001) and having a high mental score (ß = -0.648; P < 0.001). Being female (ß = -0.122; P < 0.001), a university professor (ß = -0.333; P = 0.001), a student (ß = -0.433; P < 0.001), having a high physical score (ß = -0.26; P < 0.01) and having a high mental score (ß = -0.460; P < 0.001) were predictors for reduced client burnout. However, high client burnout was seen in individuals who had a commuting time >30 min (ß = 0.084; P = 0.012) predicts. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that burnout is an important issue among HCWs and that prevention strategies must be considered, with a particular focus on physical and mental health.

RESUMEN

The International Cannabis Consortium (ICC) was founded in 2013 by Jacqueline Vink, Nathan Gillespie, Karin Verweij and Eske Derks. The largest contribution to the first meta-analysis was made by Prof. Nick Martin. The ICC has published two primary publications, in Translational Psychiatry and Nature Neuroscience, and many secondary publications. The study's principal investigators will always be grateful for Nick's contribution to science as they would not have been able to do any of this work without the contributions of Nick and others who collected samples. Nick has made unique contributions to the careers of many junior researchers by supporting their development and growth into senior positions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Female physicians are significantly less likely than male physicians to be full professors, even after accounting for age, experience, specialty, and measures of research and clinical productivity. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate sex differences in academic rank in the allergy and immunology workforce. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional physician data set containing the allergist's sex, age, years since residency, faculty appointment, authored publications, National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, clinical trial investigation, and Medicare reimbursement to investigate sex differences in the academic allergy and immunology workforce using multilevel logistic regression models. RESULTS: Among 507 academic allergists (9.3% of practicing US allergists in 2014), 323 (63.7%) were men, and 184 (36.3%) were women. Female allergists were younger (47.9 vs 56.9 years, P < .001), had fewer total (12.5 vs 28.7, P < .001) and first/last author (8.0 vs 21.5, P < .001) average publications, were less likely to have NIH funding (13.0% vs 23.5%, P = .004), were less frequently a clinical trial investigator (10.3% vs 16.1%, P = .07), and generated less average annual Medicare revenue ($44,000 vs $23,000, P = .10). Of 152 (30.0%) full professors, 126 (82.9%) were male, and 26 (17.0%) were female. After multivariable adjustment, rates of full professorship among female and male allergists were not significantly different (absolute adjusted difference for female vs male allergists, 6.0%; 95% CI, -8.3% to 20.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Among allergists with US medical school faculty appointments, men and women were similarly likely to be full professors after accounting for factors influencing promotion. Underlying differences in research productivity and NIH funding not explained by age differences alone warrant additional investigation.

RESUMEN

Professor GVR Born, Gus to his friends, was one of the great pioneers of platelet research. My early memories of him have enabled me to look back at his early years in Oxford and London. A brilliant and generous man with always the time to discuss and advise he was instrumental in deciphering the principle stages of the aggregation of blood platelets by ADP, a path aided by his development and use of the platelet aggregometer. He applied his knowledge to the real time analysis of platelet and leukocyte involvement in thrombus formation in animal models and to the development of atherosclerosis and thrombosis and their pharmacological inhibition. What follows is a personal account of the major steps in this early work and of the actors involved.
