In this paper, a collaboration scheme between a high-altitude platform (HAP) and several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for wireless communication networks is investigated. The main objective of this study is to maximize the total downlink throughput of the ground users by optimizing the UAVs' three-dimensional (3D) placements and user associations. An optimization problem is formulated and a separate genetic-algorithm-based approach is proposed to solve the problem. The K-means algorithm is also utilized to find the initial UAV placement to reduce the convergence time of the proposed genetic-algorithm-based allocation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed in terms of convergence time, complexity, and fairness. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed HAP-UAV integrated network achieves a higher total throughput through joint user association and UAV placement schemes compared to a scheme with a single HAP serving all users.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) providing additional on-demand communication and computing services have become a promising technology. However, the limited energy supply of UAVs, which constrains their service duration, has emerged as an obstacle in UAV-enabled networks. In this context, a novel task offloading framework is proposed in UAV-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. Specifically, heterogeneous UAVs with different communication and computing capabilities are considered and the energy consumption of UAVs is minimized via jointly optimizing user association and UAV deployment. The optimal transport theory is introduced to analyze the user association sub-problem, and the UAV deployment for each sub-region is determined by a dragonfly algorithm (DA). Simulation results show that the energy consumption performance is significantly improved by the proposed algorithm.

To manage a growing number of users and an ever-increasing demand for bandwidth, future 5th Generation (5G) cellular networks will combine different radio access technologies (cellular, satellite, and WiFi, among others) and different types of equipment (pico-cells, femto-cells, small-cells, macro-cells, etc.). Multi-connectivity is an emerging paradigm aiming to leverage this heterogeneous architecture. To achieve this, multi-connectivity proposes to enable UE to simultaneously use component carriers from different and heterogeneous network nodes: base stations, WiFi access points, etc. This could offer many benefits in terms of quality of service, energy efficiency, fairness, mobility, and spectrum and interference management. Therefore, this survey aims to present an overview of multi-connectivity in 5G networks and beyond. To do so, a comprehensive review of existing standards and enabling technologies is proposed. Then, a taxonomy is defined to classify the different elements characterizing multi-connectivity in 5G and future networks. Thereafter, existing research works using multi-connectivity to improve the quality of service, energy efficiency, fairness, mobility management, and spectrum and interference management are analyzed and compared. In addition, lessons common to these different contexts are presented. Finally, open challenges for multi-connectivity in 5G networks and beyond are discussed.

The ultra-dense network (UDN) is one of the key technologies in fifth generation (5G) networks. It is used to enhance the system capacity issue by deploying small cells at high density. In 5G UDNs, the cell selection process requires high computational complexity, so it is considered to be an open NP-hard problem. Internet of Vehicles (IoV) technology has become a new trend that aims to connect vehicles, people, infrastructure and networks to improve a transportation system. In this paper, we propose a machine-learning and IoV-based cell selection scheme called Artificial Neural Network Cell Selection (ANN-CS). It aims to select the small cell that has the longest dwell time. A feed-forward back-propagation ANN (FFBP-ANN) was trained to perform the selection task, based on moving vehicle information. Real datasets of vehicles and base stations (BSs), collected in Los Angeles, were used for training and evaluation purposes. Simulation results show that the trained ANN model has high accuracy, with a very low percentage of errors. In addition, the proposed ANN-CS decreases the handover rate by up to 33.33% and increases the dwell time by up to 15.47%, thereby minimizing the number of unsuccessful and unnecessary handovers (HOs). Furthermore, it led to an enhancement in terms of the downlink throughput achieved by vehicles.

With the emergence of 5G networks and the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of Mission-Critical Applications (MCAs), co-existing networks are expected to deliver higher-speed connections, enhanced reliability, and lower latency. IEEE 802.11 networks, which co-exist with 5G, continue to be the access choice for indoor networks. However, traditional IEEE 802.11 networks lack sufficient reliability and they have non-deterministic latency. To dynamically control resources in IEEE 802.11 networks, in this paper we propose a delay-aware approach for Medium Access Control (MAC) management via airtime-based network slicing and traffic shaping, as well as user association while using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). To fulfill the QoS requirements, we use Software-Defined Networking (SDN) for airtime-based network slicing and seamless handovers at the Software-Defined Radio Access Network (SD-RAN), while traffic shaping is done at the Stations (STAs). In addition to throughput, channel utilization, and signal strength, our approach monitors the queueing delay at the Access Points (APs) and uses it for centralized network management. We evaluate our approach in a testbed composed of APs controlled by SD-RAN and SDN controllers, with STAs under different workload combinations. Our results show that, in addition to load balancing flows across APs, our approach avoids the ping-pong effect while enhancing the QoS delivery at runtime. Under varying traffic demands, our approach maintains the queueing delay requirements of 5 ms for most of the experiment run, hence drawing closer to MCA requirements.

As energy efficiency (EE) is a key performance indicator for the future wireless network, it has become a significant research field in communication networks. In this paper, we consider multi-cell multi-carrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MCMC-NOMA) networks and investigate the EE maximization problem. As the EE maximization is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming NP-hard problem, it is difficult to solve directly by traditional optimization such as convex optimization. To handle the EE maximization problem, we decouple it into two subproblems. The first subproblem is user association, where we design a matching-based framework to perform the user association and the subcarriers' assignment. The second subproblem is the power allocation problem for each user to maximize the EE of the systems. Since the EE maximization problem is still non-convex with respect to the power domain, we propose a two stage quadratic transform with both a single ratio quadratic and multidimensional quadratic transform to convert it into an equivalent convex optimization problem. The power allocation is obtained by iteratively solving the convex problem. Finally, the numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method could achieve better EE compared to existing approaches for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and considerably outperforms the fractional transmit power control (FTPC) scheme for orthogonal multiple access (OMA).

Future-generation radio access networks (RAN) are projected to fulfill the diverse requirements of user equipment (UE) by adopting a heterogeneous network (HetNet) environment. Necessary integration of different radio access technologies (RAT), such as 2G, 3G, 4G, wireless local area network (WLAN), and visible light communication (VLC) is inevitable. Moreover, UEs equipped with diverse requirements will be capable of accessing some or all the RATs. The complex HetNet environment with diverse requirements of UEs will present many challenges. The HetNet is likely to suffer severely from load imbalance among the base stations (BSs) from inheriting the traditional user association scheme such as max-SINR (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio)/max-RSSI (received signal strength indicator), unless some sophisticated schemes are invented. In this paper, a novel scheme is devised for a joint-user association for load balancing, where BSs are densely deployed and UEs typically have a certain degree of mobility. Unlike most of the present works, a dynamic network is considered where the position and channel condition of the UEs are not fixed. We develop two complex and distributed association schemes based on probability and d-choices, while carefully considering both loads of the BSs and SINR experienced by the UEs. Numerical results validate the efficiency of the proposed schemes by showing a received data-rate fairness among UEs and an improvement in the UE's minimum received data rate.

Mobile edge caching is regarded as a promising way to reduce the backhaul load of the base stations (BSs). However, the capacity of BSs' cache tends to be small, while mobile users' content preferences are diverse. Furthermore, both the locations of users and user-BS association are uncertain in wireless networks. All of these pose great challenges on the content caching and content delivery. This paper studies the joint optimization of the content placement and content delivery schemes in the cache-enabled ultra-dense small-cell network (UDN) with constrained-backhaul link. Considering the differences in decision time-scales, the content placement and content delivery are investigated separately, but their interplay is taken into consideration. Firstly, a content placement problem is formulated, where the uncertainty of user-BS association is considered. Specifically, different from the existing works, the specific multi-location request pattern is considered that users tend to send content requests from more than one but limited locations during one day. Secondly, a user-BS association and wireless resources allocation problem is formulated, with the objective of maximizing users' data rates under the backhaul bandwidth constraint. Due to the non-convex nature of these two problems, the problem transformation and variables relaxation are adopted, which convert the original problems into more tractable forms. Then, based on the convex optimization methods, a content placement algorithm, and a cache-aware user association and resources allocation algorithm are proposed, respectively. Finally, simulation results are given, which validate that the proposed algorithms have obvious performance advantages in terms of the network utility, the hit ratio of the cache, and the quality of service guarantee, and are suitable for the cache-enabled UDN with constrained-backhaul link.

In networking systems such as cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) where users receive the connection and data service from short-range, light-weight base stations (BSs), users' mobility has a significant impact on their association with BSs. Although communicating with the closest BS may yield the most desirable channel conditions, such strategy can lead to certain BSs being over-populated while leaving remaining BSs under-utilized. In addition, mobile users may encounter frequent handovers, which imposes a non-negligible burden on BSs and users. To reduce the handover overhead while balancing the traffic loads between BSs, we propose an optimal user association strategy for a large-scale mobile Internet of Things (IoT) network operating on C-RAN. We begin with formulating an optimal user association scheme focusing only on the task of load balancing. Thereafter, we revise the formulation such that the number of handovers is minimized while keeping BSs well-balanced in terms of the traffic load. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, we implement a discrete-time network simulator. The evaluation results show that the proposed optimal user association strategy can significantly reduce the number of handovers, while outperforming conventional association schemes in terms of load balancing.

Due to the high splitting-gain of dense small cells, Ultra-Dense Network (UDN) is regarded as a promising networking technology to achieve high data rate and low latency in 5G mobile communications. In UDNs, each User Equipment (UE) may receive signals from multiple Base Stations (BSs), which impose severe interference in the networks and in turn motivates the possibility of using Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) transmissions to further enhance network capacity. In CoMP-based Ultra-Dense Networks, a great challenge is to tradeoff between the gain of network throughput and the worsening backhaul latency. Caching popular files on BSs has been identified as a promising method to reduce the backhaul traffic load. In this paper, we investigated content placement strategies and user association algorithms for the proactive caching ultra dense networks. The problem has been formulated to maximize network throughput of cell edge UEs under the consideration of backhaul load, which is a constrained non-convex combinatorial optimization problem. To decrease the complexity, the problem is decomposed into two suboptimal problems. We first solved the content placement algorithm based on the cross-entropy (CE) method to minimize the backhaul load of the network. Then, a user association algorithm based on the CE method was employed to pursue larger network throughput of cell edge UEs. Simulation were conducted to validate the performance of the proposed cross-entropy based schemes in terms of network throughput and backhaul load. The simulation results show that the proposed cross-entropy based content placement scheme significantly outperform the conventional random and Most Popular Content placement schemes, with with 50% and 20% backhaul load decrease respectively. Furthermore, the proposed cross-entropy based user association scheme can achieve 30% and 23% throughput gain, compared with the conventional N-best, No-CoMP, and Threshold based user association schemes.

Enterprise Wireless LANs (E-WLANs) such as airport WiFi, have become a convenient way for Internet access for mobile users. In an E-WLAN, access points (APs) are usually deployed with high-density around the infrastructure to provide sufficient coverage and for a better service, where a mobile user chooses one AP to associate with among multiple available APs in the vicinity. Many studies have been done on developing user association techniques to increase system performance, with various objectives including network throughput maximization, load balancing etc. Our work is unique in that we focused on bandwidth cost minimization via user association from the perspective of the E-WLAN operators. Specifically, by considering the bandwidth demands from mobile users, we modeled the joint user association and cost minimization problem in the heterogeneous E-WLAN with additional constraints from individual bandwidth demands as an optimization problem. To solve the optimization problem efficiently, we propose an approximation algorithm using relaxation and rounding techniques. We prove that the proposed algorithm has performance bound with a constant ratio to the optimization problem. Furthermore, our simulation results exhibit the superiority of our proposed algorithm over prior schemes.

Due to its flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and quick deployment abilities, unmanned aerial vehicle-mounted base station (UmBS) deployment is a promising approach for restoring wireless services in areas devastated by natural disasters such as floods, thunderstorms, and tsunami strikes. However, the biggest challenges in the deployment process of UmBS are ground user equipment's (UE's) position information, UmBS transmit power optimization, and UE-UmBS association. In this article, we propose Localization of ground UEs and their Association with the UmBS (LUAU), an approach that ensures localization of ground UEs and energy-efficient deployment of UmBSs. Unlike existing studies that proposed their work based on the known UEs positional information, we first propose a three-dimensional range-based localization approach (3D-RBL) to estimate the position information of the ground UEs. Subsequently, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the UE's mean data rate by optimizing the UmBS transmit power and deployment locations while taking the interference from the surrounding UmBSs into consideration. To achieve the goal of the optimization problem, we utilize the exploration and exploitation abilities of the Q-learning framework. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms two benchmark schemes in terms of the UE's mean data rate and outage percentage.
