RESUMEN
A 14-year-old cat presented with right-sided epistaxis, right facial swelling, hyporexia, and sneezing. A right nasal mass was diagnosed based on dental radiography and computed tomography (CT), and nasal angiofibroma was diagnosed based on histopathology. Treatment consisted of stereotactic body radiation therapy in three consecutive daily doses. Self-limiting grade 3 oral mucositis developed which resolved within 6 weeks. Recheck CT 169 days after treatment confirmed a partial response by RECIST(1) based on digital CT measurements . Disease progression was confirmed on CT 642 days after treatment, per RECIST criteria, with the longest tumor diameter measuring 3.4 cm.

A 6-year-old dog presented with a modified Adams stage 3 angiofibroma of the right nasal cavity, causing fluid accumulation along the right frontal sinus. Treatment consisted of step-and-shoot intensity-modulated radiation therapy in 12 daily treatments of 3.5 Gy, for a total dose of 42 Gy to 95% of the planning target volume. The dog developed self-limiting grade 2 oral mucositis which resolved within 2 weeks of course completion. A recheck exam 668 days after treatment confirmed a stable disease response by RECIST and a tumor volume decrease of 55.4%.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a histologic benign but locally aggressive vascular tumor described in humans. The description of this disease in dogs is limited. A mixed-breed female dog was presented with a history of epistaxis and nasal discharge. Rhinoscopy and computed tomography revealed a soft-tissue mass obstructing the entire nasal cavity, choana, maxillary recess, and right frontal sinus, but there was no bone or lymph node involvement. Histopathologic evaluation revealed irregular groups of blood vessels within a stroma of connective tissue, with secondary inflammation. Immunohistochemistry showed strong vimentin staining, mild factor VIII-related antigen staining, and negative staining for S100. The patient underwent tumor resection with fenestration surgery through the right maxillary bone, and there was tumor recurrence one year after surgery. This case report describes new findings regarding the immunohistochemical evaluation of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in a dog. The laboratory and imaging findings, associated with a long-term follow-up, reinforce similar features between human and canine angiofibroma and may serve as a basis for immunohistochemical evaluation of this tumor in dogs.

Human angiofibromas are rare and arise typically in the nasopharynx. In veterinary medicine they have only been described in the dog. Microscopically, angiofibromas consist of irregular groups of blood vessels within a stroma of connective tissue, with oedema and secondary inflammation often present. A cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was presented with an oral mass that consisted of aggregates of blood vessels surrounded by a connective tissue stroma, with the presence of oedema and secondary inflammation. Tumours of the oral cavity are uncommon in birds and to the authors' knowledge this is the first case of avian angiofibroma.

This case series describes a rare entity, nasal angiofibroma, in 13 dogs that were presented to the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine from 1988 to 2000. All dogs in this case series presented with clinical signs and radiographic changes that were strongly suggestive of a locally invasive neoplasm. However, histopathology completed on transnostral core biopsy samples revealed benign appearing vascular proliferation with secondary lymphosuppurative inflammation was established despite cytologic criteria of malignancy present in five dogs. On the basis of the outcomes in this case series, nasal angiofibroma should be considered a differential for dogs presenting with clinical signs consistent with a malignant nasal tumour.
