RESUMEN

The global decline of freshwater mussels and their crucial ecological services highlight the need to understand their phylogeny, phylogeography and patterns of genetic diversity to guide conservation efforts. Such knowledge is urgently needed for Unio crassus, a highly imperilled species originally widespread throughout Europe and southwest Asia. Recent studies have resurrected several species from synonymy based on mitochondrial data, revealing U. crassus to be a complex of cryptic species. To address long-standing taxonomic uncertainties hindering effective conservation, we integrate morphometric, phylogenetic, and phylogeographic analyses to examine species diversity within the U. crassus complex across its entire range. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (815 specimens from 182 populations) and, for selected specimens, whole mitogenome sequences and Anchored Hybrid Enrichment (AHE) data on âˆ¼ 600 nuclear loci. Mito-nuclear discordance was detected, consistent with mitochondrial DNA gene flow between some species during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Fossil-calibrated phylogenies based on AHE data support a Mediterranean origin for the U. crassus complex in the Early Miocene. The results of our integrative approach support 12 species in the group: the previously recognised Unio bruguierianus, Unio carneus, Unio crassus, Unio damascensis, Unio ionicus, Unio sesirmensis, and Unio tumidiformis, and the reinstatement of five nominal taxa: Unio desectusstat. rev., Unio gontieriistat. rev., Unio mardinensisstat. rev., Unio nanusstat. rev., and Unio vicariusstat. rev. Morphometric analyses of shell contours reveal important morphospace overlaps among these species, highlighting cryptic, but geographically structured, diversity. The distribution, taxonomy, phylogeography, and conservation of each species are succinctly described.

The thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788 is a species native to many European habitats, with declining populations. The impact of parasite communities on health status of this species is poorly understood. In this study, parasites of 30 U. crassus specimens from the Our and Sauer Rivers in Luxembourg were identified morphologically and, in some cases, using molecular genetic methods. The findings were correlated to selected parameters (total length, visceral weight, shell lesions, gonadal stage). The 2 populations did not differ in shell length, visceral weight, number of males and females, gonadal scoring, shell lesions, and the occurrence of glochidia. The prevalence and infestation intensities of detected Trichodina sp., Conchophthirus sp., and freshwater mite larvae did not differ between the 2 populations, whereas the prevalence and infestation intensities of mite eggs, nymphs, and adults were significantly higher in the Sauer River. Rhipidocotyle campanula and European bitterling Rhodeus amarus larvae were only present in the Sauer. Histopathology revealed the destruction of the gonads by R. campanula and tissue damage by the mites. The only significant correlation of the selected parameters was a positive correlation between R. amarus occurrence and total length as well as a negative correlation between R. amarus occurrence and gonadal stage. In the Sauer River, 2 mussels were found to be hermaphrodites.

The use of bivalve mollusks as bioindicators in automated monitoring systems can provide real-time detection of emergency situations associated with the pollution of aquatic environments. The behavioral reactions of Unio pictorum (Linnaeus, 1758) were employed in the development of a comprehensive automated monitoring system for aquatic environments by the authors. The study used experimental data obtained by an automated system from the Chernaya River in the Sevastopol region of the Crimean Peninsula. Four traditional unsupervised machine learning techniques were implemented to detect emergency signals in the activity of bivalves: elliptic envelope, isolation forest (iForest), one-class support vector machine (SVM), and local outlier factor (LOF). The results showed that the use of the elliptic envelope, iForest, and LOF methods with proper hyperparameter tuning can detect anomalies in mollusk activity data without false alarms, with an F1 score of 1. A comparison of anomaly detection times revealed that the iForest method is the most efficient. These findings demonstrate the potential of using bivalve mollusks as bioindicators in automated monitoring systems for the early detection of pollution in aquatic environments.

OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic cancer is a major site of gastrointestinal tumors and remains a leading cause of cancer death in adults in the United States. There is also a strong association between pancreatic cancer and depression. When struggling with cancer, along the different phases of illness, a human being is confronted with manifold issues, which might profoundly interfere with their sense of meaning and purpose. METHODS: From this standpoint, several different therapeutic techniques have been designed to manage the psychological needs of the patients. Here we provide 2 clinical scenarios, where there was a strong religious correlation to the therapeutic techniques employed with patients suffering from pancreatic cancer. RESULTS: The 2 cases described showed some improvement in their overall life view and could recalibrate their expectations based on a strong religious foundation. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: The role of religion and spirituality in health has also received increasing attention in literature. Religion and spirituality can help patients with cancer find meaning in their illness, provide comfort in the face of existential fears, and receive support from a community of like-minded individuals. In effect, they also provide evidence toward the scope of and integrating the domain of spirituality into holistic cancer care.

PURPOSE: Microplastic pollution is a major problem that threatens freshwater mussels as well as marine bivalves, since these filter-feeding organisms are directly exposed to microplastics in the water column. There is no study on the microplastic contamination of Unio stevenianus as a bioindicator organism. The aim of this study is to determine the microplastic contamination in U. stevenianus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 32 U. stevenianus were obtained from three different sites from Karasu River, in October 2020. The soft tissue of each mussel was digested and filtered. The filters with microplastics were observed under a stereomicroscope. RESULTS: A total of 1,253 microplastics, ranging from 0.81 to 6.69 items/gram (mean 2.85 ± 1.27 items/g) and 13.00 to 84.73 items/individual (mean 39.15 ± 16.95 items/individual), were extracted from soft tissues of mussel for all stations. The dominant of the detected microplastics consisted of fragment (48.8%) followed by fiber (47.5%) types, and ˂0.1 mm size (44.8%), irregular shape (48.7%) and black coloured (48.8%) items were the most uptaked microplastics. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that U. stevenianus has a lot of pollution where there are a lot of microplastics in the river.

Roundup (Rn), a glyphosate-based formulation, is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the world. It affects non-targeted organisms in several ways, including adhesive activity towards metal ions. Zinc (Zn) plays a crucial role in a number of biochemical processes. In this study, we aim to elucidate the direct impact of Rn on Zn accumulation and Zn-dependent activities in the ex vivo system. To this end, we exposed the samples of the digestive gland of a bivalve mollusk Unio tumidus to 3 µM of Rn (calculated as 3 µM of glyphosate), Zn, Zn chelator (N,N,N',N'-Tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine) (TPEN, Tp), and their combinations ZnTp and ZnRn for 17 h. We determined the levels of Zn in the tissue (Zn t) and metallothioneins (Zn-MT), metallothioneins (MTSH), and glutathione (GSH & GSSG), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), lysosomal membrane integrity, and caspase-3 activity. Our study demonstrated that Rn and Tp had different effects on the accumulation and functionality of Zn. Rn did not affect the accumulation of Zn (Zn t, Zn-MT) in the Zn- and ZnRn-groups. On the contrary, Tp produced effects antagonistic to Zn on caspase-3 activity, lysosomal stability, and MTSH concentration. Rn caused particular pro-oxidative effect that decreased GSH level (Rn- and ZnRn-groups) and lysosomal stability (Rn-group). The shared affected index was the GSH/GSSG ratio, which decreased by 2-8 times in each exposure. As the first experience with the application of Tp to indicate Zn activity in mollusks, the study concluded that the ex vivo approach could be useful in the study of numeral aquatic pollutants.

Even though bivalve molluscs are recognized as bioindicators of freshwater quality, their responses to multiple stressors are unpredictable. This study aims to elucidate the inter-population peculiarities of the effect in the sub-chronic environmentally relevant exposure to novel contaminants. The specimens of Unio tumidus from reference (Pr) and contaminated (Ct) areas were treated with ibuprofen (IBU, 0.8 µg L-1), microplastic (MP, 1.0 mg L-1, size 0.1-0.5 mm), or their combination (Mix) for 14 days. Untreated mussels (PrC- and CtC-groups) served as controls. The PrC-group had higher levels of antioxidants Mn-SOD, Cu,Zn-SOD, catalase, and cholinesterase (AChE) as well as lesser levels of oxidative lesions (TBARS and protein carbonyls) in digestive glands, indicating lower environmental impact than in the CtC-group. However, lysosomal stability was similar in both control groups. Among antioxidants, Mn-SOD activity was affected most prominently, increasing in all exposed Ct-groups. TBARS level was increased only in PrMP-group compared to responsive control. IBU and Mix enhanced protein carbonyl concentration in the Pr-groups, and decreased it in the Ct-groups. AChE was induced in the CtIBU- and PrMix-groups, and lysosomal integrity increased in the CtIBU and CtMix-groups. Discriminant analyses indicated lesser differences between Pr-groups, demonstrating lower cumulative stress compared to Ct-groups. Generally, the most remarkable response was revealed in the CtIBU-group, and distortion of individual effects was established in combined exposures. The qualification of stress-neutral and stress-positive populations was proposed for Pr- and Ct-populations correspondingly. Inter-site peculiarities must be taken into consideration when the environmental impact of MP and pharmaceuticals is evaluated.

Iron (Fe) treatment is one of the most commonly used methods to restore eutrophic lakes and reservoirs. The Fe-based coagulants dosage results in an almost immediate improvement in water quality at a relatively low cost. However, the effects of the application of coagulants are not always predictable, and the scale of the risks is not fully understood. The dosage of coagulants changes the chemical and physical properties of water, thereby affecting aquatic biocenoses. In this study, several laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of Fe-based coagulant dosage on two bivalves species: Anodonta anatina and Unio tumidus. Their ability to efficiently filter water and reduce seston makes them a key component of aquatic ecosystems in terms of maintaining proper ecological health and stable functioning. Behavioral response, biochemical parameters, and body chemistry changes in mussels exposed to different doses of coagulant were surveyed. A dose-dependent reduction in filtration activity of both species was observed. As early as 10 g Fe m2 (which is a moderate dose used in lakes restoration), mussels of both species almost completely reduced their filtration activity and remained with closed valves for several subsequent days. Significant Fe accumulation in muscles of bivalves exposed to coagulant was also observed. This was particularly the case when very high doses of coagulant were applied. Then, the iron content in leg muscles of both species increased over fourfold. At the same time, a decrease in muscles calcium and phosphorus content was observed. No symptoms of oxidative stress (TBARS, H2O2) after mussels exposure to coagulants were found. The results suggest that the application of Fe-based coagulant for water ecosystem restoration may be a threat to the mussels population. These findings are significant for decisions on the selection of restoration methods for a specific lake.

Freshwater mussels are used as an effective bioindicator of metal pollution. There is no data on the accumulation of any metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in tissues of Unio tigridis. Thus, this study was undertaken to investigate accumulation of Al2O3, CuO, and TiO2 NPs following exposure to different concentrations (0, 1, 3, and 9 mg/L) of NPs for 14 days. Metal concentrations in tissues were determined by ICP-MS, while NP presence was demonstrated by transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. During the experiments, mussels were fed with cultured algae (Chlorella vulgaris). TEM images demonstrated the presence of NPs in digestive gland and muscle. TEM images also suggested that NPs were taken via the lysosomes or endosomes. Highest mean concentrations (µg/g d.w.) of aluminium (76.51), copper (111.63) and titanium (113.83) occurred in the gills and followed by the digestive glands and muscles. Algae consumption of mussels did not significantly differ among controls and NP-exposed groups.

In aquatic life, environmental chemicals are accumulated by mussels due to their sentinel nature and filter-feeding characteristics. Herein, the present study focused on assessing the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, Ca, K, and Na levels in freshwater mussels (Unio elangatulus eucirrus) depending on sex and age. For all trace metals, some important differences of bioaccumulations were determined depending on ages and sex. In details, the results indicated that an important age-related accumulation of Mg, Cd, Ca, and K was in females and all trace elements, except Cu, Mg, and K levels in males (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were determined in mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, and Na. There are statistical differences in Mg, Mn, Fe, and Ca levels between females and males in four aged mussels (p < 0.05). Lead levels were under detectable limits. Overall, metal levels and their toxicity in freshwater mussels should be closely monitored for health of the environment, animals, and humans, since mussels and fish species fed on them are consumed highly in the research region and around.

Located at the junction between Europe, Africa, and Asia, with distinct evolutionary origins and varied ecological and geographical settings, together with a marked history of changes in orogeny and configuration of the main river basins, turned the Eastern Mediterranean into a region of high diversity and endemism of freshwater taxa. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionidae) from the Western Palearctic have been widely studied in their European range, but little attention has been dedicated to these taxa in the Eastern Mediterranean region and their diversity and phylogeography are still poorly understood. The present study aims to resolve the diversity, biogeography, and evolutionary relationships of the Eastern Mediterranean freshwater mussels. To that end, we performed multiple field surveys, phylogenetic analyses, and a thorough taxonomic revaluation. We reassessed the systematics of all Unionidae species in the region, including newly collected specimens across Turkey, Israel, and Iran, combining COI + 16S + 28S and COI phylogenies with molecular species delineation methods. Phylogeographical patterns were characterized based on published molecular data, newly sequenced specimens, and species distribution data, as well as ancestral range estimations. We reveal that Unionidae species richness in the Eastern Mediterranean is over 70% higher than previously assumed, counting 19 species within two subfamilies, the Unioninae (14) and Gonideinae (5). We propose two new species, Anodonta seddonisp. nov. and Leguminaia anatolicasp. nov. Six additional taxa, Unio delicatusstat. rev., Unio eucirrusstat. rev., Unio huetistat. rev., Unio sesirmensisstat. rev., Unio terminalisstat. rev. removed from the synonymy of Unio tigridis, as well as Unio damascensisstat. rev. removed from the synonymy of Unio crassus, are re-described. The nominal taxa Unio rothi var. komarowi O. Boettger, 1880 and Unio armeniacus Kobelt, 1911 are proposed as new synonyms of Unio bruguierianus, and Anodonta cyrea Drouët, 1881 and Anodonta cilicica Kobelt & Rolle, 1895 as new synonyms of Anodonta anatina. Also, the presence of Unio tumidus in the Maritza River is confirmed. The phylogeographic patterns described here are interpreted concerning major past geological events. Conservation needs and implications are presented, together with populations and species conservation priorities.

PURPOSE: Mussels are known as the natural filters of the aquatic systems and are accepted as one of the best bioindicator organism. There is no data on the response of Unio tigridis to metal-oxide nanoparticle (NP) exposures. This study aimed to investigate the response of the antioxidant enzymes of U. tigridis following exposure to NPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mussels were exposed to different concentrations (0, 1, 3, 9 mg NP/L) of Al2O3, CuO and TiO2 NPs for 14 days and subsequently, the activities of CAT (catalase), SOD (superoxide dismutase), GPx (glutathione peroxidase), GST (glutathione S-transferase) and GR (glutathione reductase) were measured in the gill and digestive gland. Mussels were fed with cultured unicellular algae (Chlorella vulgaris) during experiments. RESULTS: Data showed that algae consumptions of mussels were not significantly (p>0.05) altered by NPs. However, all enzyme activities in the digestive gland and gill altered significantly (p<0.05) after NP exposures. The activities of CAT and SOD decreased, while the activities of enzymes belonging to glutathione metabolism (GPx and GST) increased in both tissues. CONCLUSION: This study representing the first record on the antioxidant system response of U. tigridis toward NP exposures suggests that NP toxicity should be investigated thoroughly in organisms and some regulations must be done on their usages.

A sample of 30 thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus Philipsson (Unionida: Unionidae) was collected from the River Sauer in Luxembourg to acquire data on parasitic infestations of the mussels. Among other parasites, different development stages of freshwater mites were collected from the gills and the mantle of the mussels and were documented with bright-field, stereo, and confocal laser scanning microscopy and microscopic X-ray computed tomography. The retrieved data allowed a morphological description of larvae and female adults of the mites and assigning them to the genus Unionicola Haldeman (Trombidiformes: Unionicolidae) and the subgenus Pentatax Thor. Additionally, adult stages and larvae were barcoded by sequencing a section of the mitochondrial COI and 18S rRNA genes. This resulted in 4 new, similar Unionicola lineages from the adult stages, which differ in at least 14.7% (uncorrected p distance) from those already published. Barcoding of larval DNA was not successful. The comparison with known European species of the genus Unionicola and analysis of the barcoding results allowed the proposal of a new species of the genus Unionicola. The species was named Unionicola sauerensis sp. nov. after the River Sauer in Luxembourg, where the infested mussels were collected.

The priority list of freshwater pollutants is increasingly amended by pharmaceuticals. Their impact on the aquatic biota can be modulated by the presence of typical pollutants, like pesticides, and/or abnormal heating. The aim of this study was to elucidate potentially hazardous impact of combined environmental factors on the freshwater mussels by analyzing various sets of biochemical markers. We treated the bivalve molluscs of Unio tumidus with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac (Dc, 2 nM), calcium antagonist and antihypertensive drug nifedipine (Nf, 2 nM) or organophosphonate glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup MAX (Rn, 79 nM of glyphosate) at 18 °C as well as with the mixture of these substances at 18 °C (Mix) or 25 °C (MixT) during 14 days. The concentrations used were correspondent to the environmentally relevant levels. The biomarkers of stress and toxicity were evaluated in digestive gland, except the lysosomal membrane stability measured in hemocytes. Exposures caused an oxidative stress due to the decreased SOD and GST activities and GSH/GSSG ratio, increased levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and protein carbonyls (with some exceptions). Dc increased cathepsin D activity in lysosomes. Nf increased lysosomal membrane stability and caspase-3 activity. Rn caused a dramatic distortion of metallo-thiolome due to increased levels of GSH and metallothionein-related thiols (MTSH) as well as depletion of Zn, Cu and Cd in the composition of metallothioneins, and decreased Zn/Cu molar ratio in the tissue. The particular toxicity of Rn was also attested by decreased lysosomal membrane stability and cholinesterase activity. Canonical discriminant analysis separated Rn-, Mix- and MixT-groups from the joint set of C-, Dc- and Nf-groups. Generally, compound-specific effects were expressed in U. tumidus responses to the mixtures, but in MixT-group some effects were particular or extremely strong. Multi-marker approach and integrative analysis proved to be a useful tool for understanding possible future risks to freshwater mussels under a combination of xenobiotics and warming climate.

Hydropower plants (HPPs) can affect the hydrological regime. However, biochemical responses of aquatic animals for the evaluation of this disturbing are not applied yet. The specimens of Unio tumidus were sampled in a reservoir (R) of a small HPP as well as downstream from the dam (DS). Biochemical indexes in the digestive gland and alkali labile phosphates (ALP) in the gonads were examined. The R-mollusks showed low cholinesterase, catalase and caspase-3 activities, and metallothionein concentration, but elevated levels of zinc and copper, oxidized glutathione and protein carbonyls. Concentrations of lactate, pyruvate and ALP, activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase, and lipid peroxidation level were similar in both groups. Integrated biomarker response (IBR/n) index (n = 13) was 2.17 and 0.29 in the R- and DS-groups correspondingly. We suggest that using integrative biological response based on the biochemical markers of bivalve mollusks can be a valid early warning step in assessing 'environmental flow' impact.

A pesticide is a chemical substance used for the disposal of pests, such as insects, weeds, invertebrates, or rodents. Pesticides interfere with the normal metabolism of the target species; however, some of them may inadvertently affect organisms other than those targeted. Increased quantities of pesticides in water disturb various ecological processes and may increase the mortality rate of various native species of flora and fauna. One of the groups of organisms that are at the greatest risk from the adverse effects of pesticides is the bivalves. This study was designed to assess the behavioural reaction of bivalves to widespread pesticides. As a representative example, the Polish native Unio tumidus (Philipsson 1788) was used. The study investigated different groups of toxic pesticides, such as herbicides (lenacil), insecticides (thiacloprid, DDT and dichlorvos), and fungicides (tebuconazole), in concentrations of 10 mg L-1. The results showed various behavioural reactions of bivalves to the pesticides. The most evident were activity time and shell opening rate. Moreover, as a result of DDVP contamination, effects were recorded in terms of shell opening level as well as rapid onset of death. Among the five analysed plant protection products, the most toxic was DDVP. Its presence caused adductor muscle paralysis in all analysed individuals. The least toxic pesticides were DDT and thiacloprid. A strong reaction to lenacil was observed especially in the shell opening rate. Tebuconazole caused significant reductions in activity. Despite the fact that the impact of pesticides on ecosystems is under regular observation, with the use of a wide range of scientific techniques, the use of bivalves was shown to have considerable potential for water quality monitoring.

Mollusc shells are complex organomineral structures, the arrangement and composition depending on the species. Most studies are dedicated to shells composed of an aragonite nacreous and a calcite prismatic layer, so the nacreous prismatic model based on Pinctada and Atrina-Pinna. Here, we studied the micro- and nanostructure, the mineralogy and composition of a nacroprismatic bivalve species: Unio pictorum. The prismatic layer of Unio is aragonite, and the inner structure of the prismatic units strongly differs from those of the calcitic layers. The shape of the prisms varies depending on their growth stage. The first layers of nacre are similar to those of gastropods (columnar nacre), then evolve towards the typical bivalve arrangement (sheet nacre). Na, Sr, Mg, P and S are present in both prisms and nacre. The organic prismatic envelopes are rich in sulphur amino acids, whereas organic sulphate is present within the prisms and the nacreous tablets. P is present as phosphate, probably a mixture of organic and mineral complex. Chemical distribution maps confirm the absence of an organic membrane between the nacre and the prisms. The comparison of the structure, mineralogy and composition of Unio pictorum and different species show the diversity of nacroprismatic shells, and that these features are taxonomically dependent.

To investigate the effect one of the oil products, domestic heating oil (DHO), on freshwater mollusks, Unio tigridis and Viviparous bengalensis were exposed to three DHO concentrations for each species (5.8, 8.7, and 17.4 ml L-1 for mussels; 6.5, 9.7, and 19.5 mlL-1 for snails, respectively). Antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase), malondialdehyde, acetylcholinesterase and DNA damage in both species tissues were monitored over 21 days. The results showed that both antioxidant enzymes concentration (SOD and CAT) increased in the lowest DHO concentrations (5.8, and 8.7 ml L-1), and then decreased in the highest concentration (17.4 ml L-1) as the same pattern for Unio tigridis, but this not occurred for Viviparous bengalensis. MDA values recorded significantly increased compared to control. No reduction was observed in AChE concentrations in soft tissues of both mollusks may due to that DHO was a non-neurotoxicant to Unio tigridis and Viviparous bengalensis. The results of DNA damage parameters were showed significant differences (p≤ 0.05) between control and DHO concentrations except lowest concentration for each parameter measured in digestive gland of Unio tigridis. As well as, these significant differences were recorded between control and three concentrations of DHO exposure for comet length, and tail length parameters, and between control and highest oil concentration for tail moment in Viviparous bengalensis. DHO has the ability to prevent the reproduction of Viviparous bengalensis snail relation to control, that is what we considered strong evidence of the toxicity properties of DHO on the reproductive status of this species of snails. SOD, CAT, and MDA were useful biomarkers for evaluating the toxicity of DHO in mussel and snails, and comet assay was a good tool to assess the potential genotoxicity of DHO.

The availability of a rapidly growing number of complete mitochondrial genome sequences provokes high confidence dating approaches. However, even if the congruence between mitochondrial and nuclear markers is reasonable, the resulting topologies are frequently questionable. The unique opportunity to study the evolutionary history of two independent mitochondrial genomes in one phylogenetic context exists in the freshwater mussels family Unionidae. The two lineages function under doubly uniparental inheritance since well before the emergence of the family. Despite the relatively high number of available complete sequences of maternally inherited genomes, comparative analyses are limited by the small number of sequences of counterpart paternally inherited genomes. We have sequenced for the first time the representative set of five sequences (two maternal and three paternal) from the species Unio crassus. Comparative analysis of the phylogenies reconstructed using relevant mitogenomic data available in GenBank (13 species in total) reveal that single - genome inferences are congruent only if the relaxed clock is assumed.

Two parasitic amoebian species are found in mollusks of the water bodies of Ukraine. Vahlkampfia sp. is found in hepatopankreas of Unio conus Spengler, 1793, and Acanthamoeba sp. is observed in mantle cavity of Viviparus viviparus Linnaeus, 1758. For these protist species, the mollusks are shown to be intermediate hosts where amoebae feed and reproduce. An experimental infection with Vahlkampfia sp. and Acanthamoeba sp. was not successful, no pathological changes in mollusks were observed. These amoebae are successfully cultured in fresh water and agar medium, hence we can safely consider them free-living.
