RESUMO

SIGNIFICANCE: Think Tank 2019 affirmed that the rate of infection associated with contact lenses has not changed in several decades. Also, there is a trend toward more serious infections associated with Acanthamoeba and fungi. The growing use of contact lenses in children demands our attention with surveillance and case-control studies. PURPOSE: The American Academy of Optometry (AAO) gathered researchers and key opinion leaders from around the world to discuss contact lens-associated microbial keratitis at the 2019 AAO Annual Meeting. METHODS: Experts presented within four sessions. Session 1 covered the epidemiology of microbial keratitis, pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the role of lens care systems and storage cases in corneal disease. Session 2 covered nonbacterial forms of keratitis in contact lens wearers. Session 3 covered future needs, challenges, and research questions in relation to microbial keratitis in youth and myopia control, microbiome, antimicrobial surfaces, and genetic susceptibility. Session 4 covered compliance and communication imperatives. RESULTS: The absolute rate of microbial keratitis has remained very consistent for three decades despite new technologies, and extended wear significantly increases the risk. Improved oxygen delivery afforded by silicone hydrogel lenses has not impacted the rates, and although the introduction of daily disposable lenses has minimized the risk of severe disease, there is no consistent evidence that they have altered the overall rate of microbial keratitis. Overnight orthokeratology lenses may increase the risk of microbial keratitis, especially secondary to Acanthamoeba, in children. Compliance remains a concern and a significant risk factor for disease. New insights into host microbiome and genetic susceptibility may uncover new theories. More studies such as case-control designs suited for rare diseases and registries are needed. CONCLUSIONS: The first annual AAO Think Tank acknowledged that the risk of microbial keratitis has not decreased over decades, despite innovation. Important questions and research directions remain.

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of total pars plana vitrectomies (PPVs) with peripheral shaving of the vitreous base on the rates of postoperative complications in patients with aphakic, snap-on type I Boston keratoprostheses (KPros). DESIGN: Retrospective, consecutive case series. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 48 eyes in 46 patients with implantation of aphakic, snap-on type 1 Boston KPros performed at a tertiary care facility between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2013, were included. METHODS: The cumulative incidences of postoperative complications were compared between patients who underwent total PPVs with shaving of the vitreous base (n = 22) and those who had partial PPVs or anterior vitrectomies (AVs) at the time of KPro implantation (n = 26). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Rates of complications between patients who underwent total PPVs and partial PPVs or AVs. RESULTS: The rate of total postoperative complications was lower in the total PPV group (P = 0.018, log-rank test). In particular, eyes that underwent total PPVs had lower rates of retroprosthetic membranes (RPMs) requiring intervention (P = 0.049) and less vision loss due to glaucoma progression (P = 0.046). There was also a trend for fewer corneal melts (P = 0.060) and less sight-threatening complications (P = 0.051) in the total vitrectomy group. There was no difference in the rates of KPro extrusion (P = 0.41), endophthalmitis or vitritis (P = 0.15), retinal detachments (P = 0.76), cystoid macular edema (P = 0.83), or timing of complications between the 2 groups. The mean preoperative and postoperative visual acuities were similar between the 2 groups (P = 0.97). The mean follow-up was 49±22 months. CONCLUSIONS: Eyes that underwent total PPVs during implantation of aphakic, snap-on, type I Boston KPros had less postoperative complications than eyes with partial PPVs or AVs during the average 4 years of follow-up.

RESUMO

Future ophthalmologists will need to have broad skills to thrive in complex health care organizations. However, training for ophthalmologists does not take advantage of all of the postgraduate years (PGYs). Although the traditional residency years seem to have little excess capacity, enhancing the internship year does offer an opportunity to expand the time for ophthalmology training in the same 4 PGYs. Integrating the internship year into residency would allow control of all of the PGYs, allowing our profession to optimize training for ophthalmology. In this white paper, we propose that we could capture an additional 6 months of training time by integrating basic ophthalmology training into the intern year. This would allow 6 additional months to expand training in areas such as quality improvement or time for "mini-fellowships" to allow graduates to develop a deeper set of skills.

PURPOSE: To report clinical course and visual and anatomical outcomes of six eyes with histopathologically confirmed vitreous cavity and retina epithelial downgrowth. METHODS: This is a retrospective 15-year review of archived pathologic slides and corresponding medical records of patients with vitreous cavity and retina epithelial downgrowth. Posterior segment epithelial downgrowth was defined as epithelial or goblet cells in the vitreous cavity or on the surface of the retina. RESULTS: Histopathologic diagnosis of epithelial downgrowth was made in 122 patients. Of those, 6 patients (5%) had vitreous cavity and retina epithelial downgrowth. Three patients developed blind painful eye, and epithelial downgrowth was identified in enucleated specimens. The other three eyes with visual potential presented with tractional retinal detachments. Epithelial downgrowth was identified in epiretinal membranes obtained during pars plana vitrectomy. The latter group had more previous surgeries (P = 0.03), and all had keratoprosthesis implantation as their last surgery. All three had pathologic specimens obtained at the time of the keratoprosthesis implantation; no anterior segment epithelial downgrowth was noted in two patients, and one patient had involvement of corneal button, iris, and posterior capsule. Final visual acuity ranged from hand motion to light perception. CONCLUSION: In the current study, vitreous cavity and retina epithelial downgrowth occurred after multiple intraocular surgeries, including repair of the open globe injuries both in enucleated specimens and in eyes with visual potential. In eyes with visual potential, keratoprosthesis implantation seems to predispose the development of posterior segment epithelial downgrowth.

RESUMO

Antifungal drugs have been proposed as a novel treatment for Acanthamoeba keratitis. The cysticidal activity of several antifungal compounds was tested against different genotypes of culture collection and clinical isolates of Acanthamoeba. Only voriconazole and posaconazole were found to be cysticidal, with no differences in activity observed between clinical and culture collection isolates.

Increasingly, mutations in genes causing Mendelian disease will be supported by individual and small families only; however, exome sequencing studies have thus far focused on syndromic phenotypes characterized by low locus heterogeneity. In contrast, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is caused by >50 known genes, which still explain only half of the clinical cases. In a single, one-generation, nonsyndromic RP family, we have identified a gene, dehydrodolichol diphosphate synthase (DHDDS), demonstrating the power of combining whole-exome sequencing with rapid in vivo studies. DHDDS is a highly conserved essential enzyme for dolichol synthesis, permitting global N-linked glycosylation. Zebrafish studies showed virtually identical photoreceptor defects as observed with N-linked glycosylation-interfering mutations in the light-sensing protein rhodopsin. The identified Lys42Glu variant likely arose from an ancestral founder, because eight of the nine identified alleles in 27,174 control chromosomes were of confirmed Ashkenazi Jewish ethnicity. These findings demonstrate the power of exome sequencing linked to functional studies when faced with challenging study designs and, importantly, link RP to the pathways of N-linked glycosylation, which promise new avenues for therapeutic interventions.

PURPOSE: To report Achromobacter xylosoxidans as a cause of both acute-onset and delayed-onset postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. METHODS: A noncomparative consecutive case series of patients with culture-proven A. xylosoxidans endophthalmitis between 1970 and 2012. Cataract surgery and intraocular lens placement were performed in all patients before endophthalmitis. Positive cultures were obtained from the vitreous, capsular bag, and/or the removed intraocular lens. RESULTS: The clinical diagnosis was confirmed in four patients with positive cultures. Two patients with endophthalmitis had a preliminary culture report of Pseudomonas species. In addition to receiving intravitreal antibiotics, all patients underwent capsulectomy and intraocular lens removal at the time of pars plana vitrectomy. Visual acuity at last follow-up was 20/40 or better in 2 (50%) of the 4 patients, but the remaining 2 patients were 20/200 or worse. CONCLUSION: A. xylosoxidans may be a cause of acute, recurrent, and delayed-onset postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. Complete capsulectomy and intraocular lens removal can be considered in recurrent and recalcitrant patients.

A single-nucleotide mutation in the gene that encodes DHDDS has been identified by whole exome sequencing as the cause of the non-syndromic recessive retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in a family of Ashkenazi Jewish origin in which three of the four siblings have early onset retinal degeneration. The peripheral retinal degeneration in the affected siblings was evident in the initial examination in 1992 and only one had detectable electroretinogram (ERG) that suggested cone-rod dysfunction. The pigmentary retinal degeneration subsequently progressed rapidly. The identified mutation changes the highly conserved residue Lys42 to Glu, resulting in lower catalytic efficiency. Patterns of plasma transferrin isoelectric focusing gel were normal in all family members, indicating no significant abnormality in protein glycosylation. Dolichols have been shown to influence the fluidity and of the membrane and promote vesicle fusion. Considering that photoreceptor outer segments contain stacks of membrane discs, we believe that the mutation may lead to low dolichol levels in photoreceptor outer segments, resulting in unstable membrane structure that leads to photoreceptor degeneration.

PURPOSE: Most ophthalmologists in the US recognize the name "Bascom Palmer" but few are familiar with the individual for whom the Eye Institute is named. This article reviews the biography of Bascom Headen Palmer, Jr., MD (1889-1954). DESIGN: Historical review. METHODS: Historical documents were reviewed, including the archives of the University of Miami, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and other sources. RESULTS: Palmer, born in Lake City, FL in 1889, was the younger son of a Florida politician. He graduated from what was then called the College of Medicine of the Tulane University of Louisiana (now the Tulane University School of Medicine) in 1914, followed by a two-year internship at Touro Infirmary, service in the army during World War I, and finally a post-graduate course in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1923. He then moved to Miami, where he became influential in two new organizations: the University of Miami, founded in 1925, and the Florida Association of Workers for the Blind (now the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired), founded in 1930. He forged collaborations between these two organizations which eventually led to the foundation of the eponymous Eye Institute. CONCLUSIONS: The decades-long collaboration between the Miami Lighthouse and the University of Miami, facilitated by Palmer, ultimately led to the founding of the Eye Institute.

Fluoroquinolones remain the most commonly used antimicrobials for the prevention and management of bacterial endophthalmitis. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are the most frequently recovered pathogens. Increasing resistance among this group has paralleled the presence of methicillin resistance. From 2005 to 2010, we recovered 38 methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus epidermidis (MSSE) isolates from endophthalmitis patients at our institute, including 15 (39.5%) isolates resistant to gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin, members of the C-8-methoxyfluoroquinolones family. Mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDR) of gyrA and parC were determined and correlated with fluoroquinolone MICs based on Etests of these 15 MSSE isolates. High-level resistance (MIC, >32 µg/ml) to gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin was documented for 46.7% of the MSSE isolates, and low-level resistance (MIC, 2 to 4 µg/ml) was determined for 53.3%. The MICs for ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and ofloxacin were >32 µg/ml for all isolates. The amino acid substitution Ser84Phe in gyrA was found among all isolates. A second mutation in gyrA (Glu88Lys) resulted in high-level resistance to moxifloxacin and gatifloxacin. Almost all (92.8%) isolates presented double point mutations in the parC gene at codons 80 and 84 with different combinations. Eighty-seven percent of the patients had prior exposure to topical 8-methoxyfluoroquinolones. Prior exposure to the 8-methoxyfluoroquinolones may contribute to the selection of MSSE strains containing multiple mutations in the QRDRs of gyrA and parC that results in low- and high-level resistance to these agents.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop and characterize a new contact lens-associated fungal keratitis rat model and to assess the ability of non-invasive spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to detect pathological changes in vivo in fungal keratitis. METHODS: We used SD-OCT to image and measure the cornea of Sprague Dawley rats. Fusarium infection was initiated in the rat eye by fitting Fusarium solani-soaked contact lenses on the experimental eye, while the control animals received contact lenses soaked in sterile saline. The fungal infection was monitored with periodic slit-lamp examination and in vivo SD-OCT imaging of the rat eye, and confirmed by histology, counting of viable fungi in the infected rat cornea, and PCR with specific primers for Fusarium sp. RESULTS: We imaged and measured the rat cornea with SD-OCT. Custom-made contact lenses were developed based on the OCT measurements. Incubation of contact lenses in a F. solani suspension resulted in biofilm formation. We induced contact lens-associated Fusarium keratitis by fitting the rat eyes for 4 h with the Fusarium-contaminated contact lenses. The SD-OCT images of the cornea correlated well with the slit-lamp and histopathological results and clearly defined clinical signs of infection, namely, increased corneal thickening, loss of epithelial continuity, hyper-reflective areas representing infiltrates, and endothelial plaques characteristic of fungal infection. Moreover, in three cases, SD-OCT detected the infection without any clear findings on slit-lamp examination. Infection was confirmed with histological fungal staining, PCR, and microbiological culture positivity. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a highly reproducible rat contact lens model and successfully induced contact lens-associated Fusarium keratitis in this model. The clinical presentation of contact lens-associated Fusarium keratitis in the rat model is similar to the human condition. SD-OCT is a valuable tool that non-invasively revealed characteristic signs of the fungal infection and could provide sensitive, objective monitoring in fungal keratitis.

Purpose of Review: In this article, we reviewed the impact resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic on the traditional model of care in ophthalmology. Recent Findings: Though virtual eye care has been present for more than 20 years, the COVID-19 pandemic has established a precedent to seriously consider its role in the evolving paradigm of vision and eye care. New hybrid models of care have enhanced or replaced traditional synchronous and asynchronous visits. The increased use of smart phoneography and mobile applications enhanced the remote examination of patients. Use of e-learning became a mainstream tool to continue accessing education and training. Summary: Teleophthalmology has demonstrated its value for screening, examining, diagnosing, monitoring treatment, and increasing access to education. However, much of the progress made following the COVID-19 pandemic is at risk of being lost as society pushes to reestablish normalcy. Further studies during the new norm are required to prove a more permanent role for virtual eye care.

The present report describes a case of semi-autologous corneal transplantation with bilateral surgery using two operating microscopes simultaneously. An 86-year-old man with history of six prior failed penetrating keratoplasties in his right eye presented with decreased vision. His other eye was deeply amblyopic but had a clear 30-year-old Castroviejo-square graft with an endothelial cell count of 803 cells/mm2. A semi-autologous graft was performed from the left eye to the right. Surgery was performed simultaneously on both eyes by two different surgeons using a standard ophthalmic operating microscope as well as a second ENT microscope. Upon trephination of the right failed corneal graft, vitreous opacities were noted and sent for culture. The semi-autologous tissue was directly transferred from the left eye to the right without any storage in preservation media to avoid endothelial cell loss. The semi-autologous graft remained clear in the immediate postoperative period. However, the vitreous cultures grew coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. Despite all efforts, the patient eventually developed a retinal detachment and vision in the right eye decreased to light perception. Autologous penetrating keratoplasty is an option for patients with loss of corneal function in a potentially seeing eye and a clear cornea in a contralateral eye with poor visual potential due to non-corneal disease. This case is unique in that part of the autologous penetrating keratoplasty had an old square graft in the center and corneal transplant surgery was done simultaneously in both eyes. It also highlights chronic indolent endophthalmitis as a potential cause of multiple graft failures.

PURPOSE: To describe the incidence, microbiology, associated factors, and clinical outcomes of patients with infectious keratitis progressing to endophthalmitis. DESIGN: Nonrandomized, retrospective, consecutive case series. PARTICIPANTS: All patients treated for culture-proven keratitis and endophthalmitis between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 2009, at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. METHODS: Ocular microbiology and medical records were reviewed on all patients with positive corneal and intraocular cultures over the period of the study. Univariate analysis was performed to obtain P values described in the study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Microbial isolates, treatment strategies, and visual acuity (VA) outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 9934 corneal cultures were performed for suspected infectious keratitis. Only 49 eyes (0.5%) progressed to culture-proven endophthalmitis. Fungi (n = 26) were the most common responsible organism followed by gram-positive bacteria (n = 13) and gram-negative bacteria (n = 10). Topical steroid use (37/49 [76%]) was the most common associated factor identified in the current study, followed by previous surgery (30/49 [61%]), corneal perforation (17/49 [35%]), dry eye (15/49 [31%]), relative immune compromise (10/49 [20%]), organic matter trauma (9/49 [18%]), and contact lens wear (3/49 [6%]). There were 27 patients in whom a primary infectious keratitis developed into endophthalmitis, and 22 patients in whom an infectious keratitis adjacent to a previous surgical wound progressed into endophthalmitis. Patients in the primary keratitis group were more likely to be male (22/27 [81%] vs 8/22 [36%]; P = 0.001), have history of organic matter trauma (8/27 [30%] vs 1/22 [5%]); P = 0.030), and have fungal etiology (21/27 [78%] vs 5/22 [23%]; P<0.001). Patients in the surgical wound-associated group were more likely to use topical steroids (20/22 [91%] vs 17/27 [63%]; P = 0.024). A VA of ≥ 20/50 was achieved in 7 of 49 patients (14%), but was <5/200 in 34 of 49 (69%) at last follow-up. Enucleation or evisceration was performed in 15 of 49 patients (31%). CONCLUSIONS: Progression of infectious keratitis to endophthalmitis is relatively uncommon. The current study suggests that patients at higher risk for progression to endophthalmitis include patients using topical corticosteroids, patients with fungal keratitis, patients with corneal perforation, and patients with infectious keratitis developing adjacent to a previous surgical wound. BACKGROUND: Cervical and endometrial measurement in the gynecological and obstetric patients is of vital importance. There is no consensus for the correct way in which should be made the measurement, more than anything is for an opinion of some experts. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are differences in measurement of endometrial or sagittal cross section of the uterus and cervix in the measurement of fractional linear fashion or along the cervical canal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using a transvaginal ultrasound, was measured in a transverse and longitudinal endometrial lining. And by fractional measuring along the cervical canal and a linear manner from the internal to the external. RESULTS: We studied a total of 63 patients. The mean endometrial transversal measurement in a cross was 7.1. mm (SD +/- 3.3) The mean endometrial longitudinally measured were: 7.9 mm (SD +/- 3.4). The mean cervical measurement was fractionally 3.3 cm (SD +/- 0.4) Mean cervical linear measurement was 3.9 cm (SD +/- 0.4). Using student's t test where the value of p in the endometrial measurement was 0.0871 and p value in cervical measurement was 0.009, the latter being statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: With respect to the measurement of the endometrial lining, there is no significant difference do any of the two different techniques. However, measurement of the cervix, another significant difference (p = 0.009), so it should be further investigated which of these two techniques is the right way to establish more accurate diagnoses.

The frequencies of 19 respiratory pathogens other than SARS-CoV-2 were assessed in 6,"?>235 Brazilian individuals tested for COVID-19. Overall, only 83 individuals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 had codetection of other pathogens. Individuals infected with Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Human Coronavirus (HCoV)-HKU1, HCoV-NL63, HPIV-4, Influenza A (-H1N1 and other subtypes), Influenza B, Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Human Metapneumovirus were less likely to test positive for SARS-CoV-2. Infection with Streptococcys pyogenes, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Bordetella pertussis were more frequent in individuals who tested negative for SARS-CoV-2, but without significancy. We found 150 individuals infected with ≥2 pathogens other than SARS-CoV-2, only 3 out of whom tested positive for COVID-19. The codetection frequency was low in individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. Other viral infections may provide a cross-reactive, protective immune response against SARS-CoV-2. Screening for bacterial respiratory infections upon COVID-19 testing is important to drive suitable therapeutic approaches and avoid unnecessary antibiotic prescription.

OBJECTIVES: To detect RSV or other thirteen respiratory viruses as possible causer agent of bronchiolitis in infants. METHOD: This is an epidemiological analytical study, conducted using a nasopharyngeal aspirate of 173 hospitalized children younger than two years old with severe bronchiolitis in three hospitals in the Campinas Metropolitan Region (CMR) during 2013-14. The data was statically evaluated by Pearson's chi-squared test with statistical significance of 0.05 and 95% confidence level. RESULTS: As expected, the most prevalent viruses detected were RSV A and B in 47% and 16% of the samples, respectively. However, almost a third of severe bronchiolitis cases there were no detection of RSV, and the viruses more commonly detected were rhinoviruses, which were identified in almost a quarter of all positive samples for at least a viral agent. CONCLUSIONS: Although nothing could be concluded from the disease severity and clinical-epidemiological data, the present study's results indicate that severe bronchiolitis is not always related to RSV infections in children younger than two years old, and the rhinoviruses were more prevalent in these cases. These findings reinforce the need to carry out a viral diagnosis in the hospital emergency would be very appropriate for all cases of respiratory infections in children, even for diseases in which the primary etiological agent seems to be well known.

Some chronic respiratory diseases can cause hypoxemia and, in such cases, long-term home oxygen therapy (LTOT) is indicated as a treatment option primarily to improve patient quality of life and life expectancy. Home oxygen has been used for more than 70 years, and support for LTOT is based on two studies from the 1980s that demonstrated that oxygen use improves survival in patients with COPD. There is evidence that LTOT has other beneficial effects such as improved cognitive function, improved exercise capacity, and reduced hospitalizations. LTOT is indicated in other respiratory diseases that cause hypoxemia, on the basis of the same criteria as those used for COPD. There has been an increase in the use of LTOT, probably because of increased life expectancy and a higher prevalence of chronic respiratory diseases, as well as greater availability of LTOT in the health care system. The first Brazilian Thoracic Association consensus statement on LTOT was published in 2000. Twenty-two years later, we present this updated version. This document is a nonsystematic review of the literature, conducted by pulmonologists who evaluated scientific evidence and international guidelines on LTOT in the various diseases that cause hypoxemia and in specific situations (i.e., exercise, sleep, and air travel). These recommendations, produced with a view to clinical practice, contain several charts with information on indications for LTOT, oxygen sources, accessories, strategies for improved efficiency and effectiveness, and recommendations for the safe use of LTOT, as well as a LTOT prescribing model.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term results of femtosecond laser-assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty (FALK) for anterior corneal pathologies. DESIGN: Retrospective, noncomparative, interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen consecutive patients who underwent FALK for anterior corneal pathologies. INTERVENTION: Femtosecond laser-assisted sutureless anterior lamellar keratoplasty. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), manifest refraction, need for adjunctive surgery, and complications. RESULTS: Follow-up ranged from 12 to 69 months (mean = 31 months). The BSCVA was significantly improved over preoperative values at the 12-, 18-, 24-, and 36-month visits. A BSCVA greater than 20/30 was achieved in 54% of patients at the 12-month visit when all 13 patients were available for follow-up, in 50% and 33% of patients at the 18- and 24-month visits, respectively, when 12 patients were available, and in 60% and 50% of patients at the 36- and 48-month visits when 5 and 2 patients were available, respectively. The BSCVA of the eye that completed the 60- and 70-month visits was 20/50. Patients achieved a mean gain of 5 lines of BSCVA at the 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month visits, 4 lines at the 36-month visit, 5 lines at the 48-month visit, and 6 lines at the 60- and 72-month visits. Two patients lost a mean of 1.5 lines of BSCVA because surface haze developed after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and granular dystrophy recurred in the graft. At a mean of 5 weeks postoperatively, 83.3% of patients achieved BSCVA within 2 lines of that recorded at the 24-month visit. At the 12-month visit, mean spherical equivalent and refractive astigmatism were -0.4 diopters (D) and 2.2 D, respectively, with no significant shift from preoperative values or values recorded in different follow-up visits. Adjunctive surgeries included phototherapeutic keratectomy, PRK, cataract extraction, and epithelial ingrowth debridement. Complications included residual corneal pathology, mild interface haze, anisometropia, recurrence of pathology, haze after adjunctive PRK, dry eye, epithelial ingrowth, and suspicious ectasia. CONCLUSIONS: Femtosecond laser-assisted sutureless anterior lamellar keratoplasty improves the BSCVA of patients with anterior corneal pathologies with rapid visual rehabilitation and no significant induced astigmatism. Our preliminary results indicate that FALK results remained stable throughout the follow-up period.
