BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the impact of interactive lecture (IL) and team-based learning (TBL) on improving clinical reasoning skills (CRSs) and achieving learning outcomes (LO). Students' feedback was obtained about the strategies. METHODS: This study was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine in Rabigh, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Two modules, endocrinology, and emergency were selected. Students of each batch in both modules were divided into two arms. With a randomized crossover design, IL & TBL were used for two separate topics in each module. After each topic, a quiz in the form of well-structured MCQs was taken. A questionnaire was designed to obtain students' feedback. SPSS version 23 was used to analyse results. The difference between the mean values was calculated by Student's t-test. Feedback data is presented as frequency. P-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Learning outcomes were achieved by all groups in two modules, with both instructional strategies, IL and TBL. Students attempted >70% correct answers. However, in the emergency module, the groups with TBL as the instructional strategy performed better in quiz1 and quiz 2 (p = 0.026 and p = 0.016, respectively). Similarly, in the endocrinology module (3rd year), although the groups with TBL as the instructional strategy performed better in both quizzes, it was significant in quiz1 (p = 0.02). The difficulty indices of the clinical reasoning questions (CRQ) were used as the parameters for comparison. In the emergency module, group1, in quiz1, with TBL as an instructional strategy performed better in the CRQ (p = 0.017), while in quiz2, group2 with TBL as the instructional strategy performed better (p < 0.001). Group1 of the third-year students (endocrinology module) performed better in the CRQ in quiz 1 with TBL as an instructional strategy than group 2 with IL (p = 0.04). Mostly, students in both modules preferred TBL over IL, and especially they liked team application. Students perceived that TBL was a better strategy to learn CRS. CONCLUSIONS: Students achieved LOs and CRS better with TBL as an instructional strategy. They preferred TBL over IL. It is suggested to include TBL, or increase its percentage, in the curriculum.

Background: High breastfeeding self-efficacy is linked with lower rates of postpartum depression. No study from Saudi Arabia has previously assessed the relation between breastfeeding self-efficacy and postpartum depression. Objective: To determine the correlation between breastfeeding self-efficacy and postpartum depression in a cohort from Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included mothers who had given birth between February to June 2022 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and were between 2 weeks and 3 months postpartum. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire comprising the following three sections: sociodemographic characteristics, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), and Breastfeeding Self Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF). Results: A total of 257 participants completed the questionnaire, with most aged 25-34 years (59.1%). The prevalence of postpartum depression was 25.3%, and it was significantly associated with lack of support from the husband and family during pregnancy (for both, P < 0.001), history of violence (P < 0.001), family history of depression (P = 0.045), complications during pregnancy (P = 0.004), and multiple pregnancies (P = 0.004). The mean score on the BSES-SF was 47.4, and participants who scored above the mean had significantly lower rates of postpartum depression (P = 0.003). In addition, an inverse relation was noted between BSES-SF and postpartum depression scores (r = -0.297): when the scores of BSES-SF increased, the scores of postpartum depression decreased. Conclusion: The rate of postpartum depression was high in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; nonetheless, positive breastfeeding self-efficacy was found to be correlated with lower rates of postpartum depression. These findings indicate the need for careful screening of patients at risk of postpartum depression and for providing breastfeeding support/knowledge, both in the antenatal and postpartum periods.

Background: Childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is commonly diagnosed in Saudi Arabia, but there is negligible evidence regarding adult ADHD in college students. Objective: To determine the prevalence and correlates of ADHD among undergraduates at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 2280 undergraduate students from 11 colleges at King Abdulaziz University, one of the largest university in Saudi Arabia, were approached in person with a questionnaire that elicited information regarding demographics, education, psychiatric history, health behaviors, and ADHD. A validated Arabic version of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale was used. Results: A total of 2059 students (90%) completed the questionnaire (mean age: 21.2 years). Almost one-tenth (11.9%) of the sample met the criteria for adult ADHD; only 6.5% had been diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and <1% (0.8%) had taken medication for the same. Multivariate analyses revealed that high family income, low grade in the last semester, parental divorce, diagnosis of childhood ADHD, prior diagnosis of depression, greater severity of current depression and anxiety, and cigarette smoking increased the likelihood of adult ADHD. Conclusion: A notable proportion of students in this study had suspected adult ADHD. Early evaluation of students with ADHD and identification of those at risk may potentially help in improving their academic performance and quality of life.

Background: The present study examined the prevalence of and risk factors for symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in the general population of Jeddah, a large port city in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed a convenience sample of 520 adults. We used a validated self-screening measure to assess BDD, the body dysmorphic disorder questionnaire (BDDQ). Results: The prevalence of significant BDD symptoms among the general Saudi population was 8.8% (ie, those scoring above the cut off for BDD on the BDDQ). Over half (52%) of all respondents reported concerns about the attractiveness of their body parts, and of those expressing such concerns, 66% were preoccupied with these thoughts. Only 3% of all respondents opted for cosmetic surgery because of these concerns, and most of those individuals (69%) had only one surgery. Nearly 9% of all respondents reported that these concerns affected their relationships with family and friends. Almost 15% of all participants spent an hour or more each day thinking about these concerns. Patients who reported a history of depression were 3.8 times more likely to have BDD. Other variables included in the model predicting high BDD scores (eg, age, job status, and marital status) did not achieve statistical significance. Conclusion: Significant symptoms of BDD (based on the BDDQ) are not uncommon among the general population of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Risk factors for this condition were female gender, younger age, being unmarried, and in bivariate and multivariate analyses, history of depression and female gender. These findings underscore the need for increased awareness by clinicians of this disorder, particularly when treating patients with depressive disorder, particularly among women.

Introduction: Skin Picking Disorder (SPD) is a skin-related disease, also recognized as psychogenic excoriation, dermatillomania, or excoriation disorder. SPD is defined as a habitual picking of skin, which in turn harms skin tissue. Given the paucity of information on SPD symptoms, their prevalence, and risk factors in Saudi Arabia, the present study seeks to fill this gap by investigating these factors in a community sample from Jeddah. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the city of Jeddah. The Skin Picking Scale-Revised (SPS-R) scale was administered to a convenience sample of 520 respondents. A partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) for "impairment" and "symptoms severity" subscales was assessed by evaluating the validity of measurement and structural models. Results: Skin picking behavior was reported by 28.8% (n=150). A significant level of skin picking disorder symptoms was present in 1.2% (n=6). Skin picking visual effect, depressive symptoms, and being unmarried were the only positive independent predictors of the total SPS-R score. Conclusion: SPD symptoms are relatively common among the adult population in Jeddah, but those with threshold symptoms indicative of SPD are relatively few. Such behavior is particularly common in vulnerable groups such as those with depressive symptoms and the unmarried. More attention to this condition by clinicians will improve the quality of life of those affected, and reduce the emotional and physical health consequences of this often unrecognized condition.
