Prenatal per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure may influence gestational outcomes through bioactive lipidsâmetabolic and inflammation pathway indicators. We estimated associations between prenatal PFAS exposure and bioactive lipids, measuring 12 serum PFAS and 50 plasma bioactive lipids in 414 pregnant women (median 17.4 weeks' gestation) from three Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program cohorts. Pairwise association estimates across cohorts were obtained through linear mixed models and meta-analysis, adjusting the former for false discovery rates. Associations between the PFAS mixture and bioactive lipids were estimated using quantile g-computation. Pairwise analyses revealed bioactive lipid levels associated with PFDeA, PFNA, PFOA, and PFUdA (p < 0.05) across three enzymatic pathways (cyclooxygenase, cytochrome p450, lipoxygenase) in at least one combined cohort analysis, and PFOA and PFUdA (q < 0.2) in one linear mixed model. The strongest signature revealed doubling in PFOA corresponding with PGD2 (cyclooxygenase pathway; +24.3%, 95% CI: 7.3-43.9%) in the combined cohort. Mixture analysis revealed nine positive associations across all pathways with the PFAS mixture, the strongest signature indicating a quartile increase in the PFAS mixture associated with PGD2 (+34%, 95% CI: 8-66%), primarily driven by PFOS. Bioactive lipids emerged as prenatal PFAS exposure biomarkers, deepening insights into PFAS' influence on pregnancy outcomes.

The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-Wide Cohort Study (EWC), a collaborative research design comprising 69 cohorts in 31 consortia, was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2016 to improve children's health in the United States. The EWC harmonizes extant data and collects new data using a standardized protocol, the ECHO-Wide Cohort Data Collection Protocol (EWCP). EWCP visits occur at least once per life stage, but the frequency and timing of the visits vary across cohorts. As of March 4, 2022, the EWC cohorts contributed data from 60,553 children and consented 29,622 children for new EWCP data and biospecimen collection. The median (interquartile range) age of EWCP-enrolled children was 7.5 years (3.7-11.1). Surveys, interviews, standardized examinations, laboratory analyses, and medical record abstraction are used to obtain information in 5 main outcome areas: pre-, peri-, and postnatal outcomes; neurodevelopment; obesity; airways; and positive health. Exposures include factors at the level of place (e.g., air pollution, neighborhood socioeconomic status), family (e.g., parental mental health), and individuals (e.g., diet, genomics).

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between prenatal maternal stress (PREMS) and non-nutritive suck (NNS) and tested its robustness across 2 demographically diverse populations. METHODS: The study involved 2 prospective birth cohorts participating in the national Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program: Illinois Kids Development Study (IKIDS) and ECHO Puerto Rico (ECHO-PROTECT). PREMS was measured during late pregnancy via the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). NNS was sampled from 1- to 8-week-olds using a custom pacifier for ~5 min. RESULTS: Overall, 237 mother-infant dyads completed this study. Despite several significant differences, including race/ethnicity, income, education, and PREMS levels, significant PREMS-NNS associations were found in the 2 cohorts. In adjusted linear regression models, higher PREMS, measured through PSS-10 total scores, related to fewer but longer NNS bursts per minute. CONCLUSIONS: A significant association was observed between PREMS and NNS across two diverse cohorts. This finding is important as it may enable the earlier detection of exposure-related deficits and, as a result, earlier intervention, which potentially can optimize outcomes. More research is needed to understand how NNS affects children's neurofunction and development. IMPACT: In this double-cohort study, we found that higher maternal perceived stress assessed in late pregnancy was significantly associated with fewer but longer sucking bursts in 1- to 8-week-old infants. This is the first study investigating the association between prenatal maternal stress (PREMS) and infant non-nutritive suck (NNS), an early indicator of central nervous system integrity. Non-nutritive suck is a potential marker of increased prenatal stress in diverse populations. Non-nutritive suck can potentially serve as an early indicator of exposure-related neuropsychological deficits allowing for earlier interventions and thus better prognoses.

The growing ubiquity of recalcitrant organic contaminants in the aqueous environment poses risks to effective and efficient water treatment and reuse. A novel three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical flow-through reactor employing activated carbon (AC) encased in a stainless-steel (SS) mesh as a cathode is proposed for the removal and degradation of a model recalcitrant contaminant p-nitrophenol (PNP), a toxic compound that is not easily biodegradable or naturally photolyzed, can accumulate and lead to adverse environmental health outcomes, and is one of the more frequently detected pollutants in the environment. As a stable 3D electrode, granular AC supported by a SS mesh frame as a cathode is hypothesized to 1) electrogenerate H2O2 via a 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction on the AC surface, 2) initiate decomposition of this electrogenerated H2O2 to form hydroxyl radicals on catalytic sites of the AC surface 3) remove PNP molecules from the waste stream via adsorption, and 4) co-locate the PNP contaminant on the carbon surface to allow for oxidation by formed hydroxyl radicals. Additionally, this design is utilized to electrochemically regenerate the AC within the cathode that is significantly saturated with PNP to allow for environmentally friendly and economic reuse of this material. Under flow conditions with optimized parameters, the 3D AC electrode is nearly 20% more effective than traditional adsorption in removing PNP. 30 grams of AC within the 3D electrode can remove 100% of the PNP compound and 92% of TOC under flow. The carbon within the 3D cathode can be electrochemically regenerated in the proposed flow system and design thereby increasing the adsorptive capacity by 60%. Moreover, in combination with continuous electrochemical treatment, the total PNP removal is enhanced by 115% over adsorption. It is anticipated this platform holds great promises to eliminate analogous contaminants as well as mixtures.
RESUMO
The fabrication of a cost-efficient cathode is critical for in-situ electrochemical generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to remove persistent organic pollutants from groundwater. Herein, we tested a stainless-steel (SS) mesh wrapped banana-peel derived biochar (BB) cathode for in-situ H2O2 electrogeneration to degrade bromophenol blue (BPB) and Congo red (CR) dyes. Furthermore, polarity reversal is evaluated for the activation of BB surface via introduction of various oxygen containing functionalities that serve as active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to generate H2O2. Various parameters including the BB mass, current, as well as the solution pH have been optimized to evaluate the cathode performance for efficient H2O2 generation. The results reveal formation of up to 9.4 mg/L H2O2 using 2.0 g BB and 100 mA current in neutral pH with no external oxygen supply with a manganese doped tin oxide deposited nickel foam (Mn-SnO2@NF) anode to facilitate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This iron-free electrofenton (EF) like process enabled by the SSBB cathode facilitates efficient degradation of BPB and CR dyes with 87.44 and 83.63% removal efficiency, respectively after 60 min. A prolonged stability test over 10 cycles demonstrates the effectiveness of polarity reversal toward continued removal efficiency as an added advantage. Moreover, Mn-SnO2@NF anode used for the OER was also replaced with stainless steel (SS) mesh anode to investigate the effect of oxygen evolution on H2O2 generation. Although Mn-SnO2@NF anode exhibits better oxygen evolution potential with reduced Tafel slope, SS mesh anode is discussed to be more cost-efficient for further studies.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on perinatal outcomes while accounting for maternal depression or perceived stress and to describe COVID-specific stressors, including changes in prenatal care, across specific time periods of the pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: Data of dyads from 41 cohorts from the National Institutes of Health Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program (N = 2,983) were used to compare birth outcomes before and during the pandemic (n = 2,355), and a partially overlapping sample (n = 1,490) responded to a COVID-19 questionnaire. Psychosocial stress was defined using prenatal screening for depression and perceived stress. Propensity-score matching and general estimating equations with robust variance estimation were used to estimate the pandemic's effect on birth outcomes. RESULTS: Symptoms of depression and perceived stress during pregnancy were similar prior to and during the pandemic, with nearly 40% of participants reporting mild to severe stress, and 24% reporting mild depression to severe depression. Gestations were shorter during the pandemic (B = - 0.33 weeks, p = 0.025), and depression was significantly associated with shortened gestation (B = - 0.02 weeks, p = 0.015) after adjustment. Birth weights were similar (B = - 28.14 g, p = 0.568), but infants born during the pandemic had slightly larger birth weights for gestational age at delivery than those born before the pandemic (B = 0.15 z-score units, p = 0.041). More women who gave birth early in the pandemic reported being moderately or extremely distressed about changes to their prenatal care and delivery (45%) compared with those who delivered later in the pandemic. A majority (72%) reported somewhat to extremely negative views of the impact of COVID-19 on their life. CONCLUSION: In this national cohort, we detected no effect of COVID-19 on prenatal depression or perceived stress. However, experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic in pregnancy was associated with decreases in gestational age at birth, as well as distress about changes in prenatal care early in the pandemic. KEY POINTS: · COVID-19 was associated with shortened gestations.. · Depression was associated with shortened gestations.. · However, stress during the pandemic remained unchanged.. · Most women reported negative impacts of the pandemic..

BACKGROUND/AIM: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are important regulators of uterine remodeling, a critical process for healthy pregnancies, and studies have revealed a link between an imbalance in MMPs and adverse birth outcomes. Toxicological studies have indicated that exposure to heavy metals can alter the levels of inflammatory cytokines, including MMPs. Despite growing evidence, the clear association between heavy metal exposure and MMPs has yet to be explored extensively in human populations. To have a better understanding of the association, in this study, we assessed associations between maternal blood metal levels with MMPs among 617 pregnant women in the Puerto Rico PROTECT birth cohort. METHODS: We measured blood concentrations for 11 metals in the first and/or second trimester of pregnancy using ICP-MS. MMPs (MMP1, MMP2, and MMP9) were quantified using a customized Luminex assay. Linear mixed effects models (LMEs) were used to regress MMPs on metals and included random intercepts for study participants to account for correlated repeated outcome measures. Fetal sex effects were estimated using interaction terms between metal exposure variables and fetal sex indicators. RESULTS: We observed significant associations between cesium, manganese, and zinc with all the MMPs that were measured. We also observed differences in metal-MMPs associations by fetal sex. Cobalt was positively associated with MMP1 only in women with male fetuses, and cesium was negatively associated with MMP1 only in women with female fetuses. MMP2 had significant associations with maternal blood metal concentrations only in women with female fetuses. CONCLUSION: Certain metals were significantly associated with MMPs that are responsible for uterine remodeling and healthy pregnancies. Most of these associations differed by fetal sex. This study highlighted significant metal-MMPs associations that may inform research on new avenues for understanding heavy metal-induced adverse birth outcomes and the development of diagnostic tools.

Sulfite as precursor to generate sulfate radical (SO4 â¢-) for water treatment has gained attention. Here we report a metal-free and highly efficient electro/UV/sulfite process to produce SO4 â¢- for water treatment. UV/sulfite reaction induces sulfite radical (SO3 â¢-), which transforms into SO4 â¢- in the presence of oxygen generated by water electrolysis. Electro/UV/sulfite process generates a steady-state SO4 â¢- concentration of 0.2 to 1.1 × 10-12 M in our tests. Solution pH affects sulfite species distribution, and higher pH mediates improved yield of steady-state SO4 â¢- concentration. Effect of sulfite concentration exhibits a bell-shaped pattern toward SO4 â¢- production due to self-scavenging. The oxidation capability of electro/UV/sulfite process is manifested by removing representative micropollutants (i.e., ibuprofen, salicylic acid, and bisphenol A) and Escherichia coli model pathogen, in both synthetic and natural water matrices. This novel electro/UV/sulfite process has obvious advantages, since it bypasses metal ion catalysts, supplies reaction with electrolytically generated nascent oxygen, and overcomes the acidic pH requirement, that are challenging to traditional metal/sulfite processes. Considering the features of environmental friendliness and low cost, the proposed electro/UV/sulfite process should lead to successful applications in the future.
RESUMO
H2O2 generation by 2-electron oxygen electroreduction reaction (2eORR) has attracted great attention as an alternative to the industry-dominant anthraquinone process. Electro-Fenton (EF) process, which relies on the H2O2 electrogeneration, is regarded as an important environmental application of H2O2 generation by 2eORR. However, its application is hindered by the relatively expensive electrode materials. Proposing cathode materials with low cost and facile synthetic procedures are the priority to advance the EF process. In this work, a composite cathode structure that uses graphitic granular bamboo-based biochar (GB) and stainless steel (SS) mesh (GBSS) is proposed, where SS mesh functions as current distributor and GB supports synergistic H2O2 electrogeneration and activation. The graphitic carbon makes GB conductive and the oxygen-containing groups serve as active sites for H2O2 production. 11.3 mg/L H2O2 was produced from 2.0 g GB at 50 mA after 50 min under neutral pH without external O2/air supply. The O-doped biochar further increased the H2O2 yield to 18.3 mg/L under same conditions. The GBSS electrode is also effective for H2O2 activation to generate ·OH, especially under neutral pH. Ultimately, a neutral Fe-free EF process enabled by GBSS cathode is effective for removal of various model organic pollutants (reactive blue 19, orange II, 4-nitrophenol) within 120 min, and for their partial mineralization (48.4% to 63.5%). Long-term stability of the GBSS electrode for H2O2 electrogeneration, H2O2 activation, and pollutants degradation were also examined and analyzed. This work offers a promising application for biomass waste for removals of organic pollutants in neutral Fe-free EF process.
RESUMO
This study performed a comprehensive assessment of the impact of Hurricane Maria (HM) on drinking water quality in Puerto Rico (PR) by integrating targeted chemical analysis of both inorganic (18 trace elements) and organic trace pollutants (200 micropollutants) with high-throughput quantitative toxicogenomics and in vitro biomarkers-based toxicity assays. Average concentrations of 14 detected trace elements and 20 organic micropollutants showed elevation after HM. Arsenic, sucralose, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), atrazine-2-hydroxy, benzotriazole, acesulfame, and prometon were at significantly (p < 0.05) higher levels in the post-HM than in the pre-HM samples. Thirteen micropollutants, including four pesticides, were only detected in posthurricane samples. Spatial comparison showed higher pollutant and toxicity levels in the samples from northern PR (where eight Superfund sites are located) than in those from southern PR. Distinctive pathway-specific molecular toxicity fingerprints for water extracts before and after HM and at different locations revealed changes in toxicity nature that likely resulted from the impact of HM on drinking water composition. Correlation analysis and Maximum Cumulative Ratio assessment suggested that metals (i.e., arsenic) and PFOA were the top ranked pollutants that have the potential to cause increased risk after HM, providing a possible direction for future water resource management and epidemiological studies.

Efficient electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is critical for treatment of refractory pollutants by the electro-Fenton process. An effective strategy is developed by combining a flow-through reactor with a poly- tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-modified graphite felt cathode. In this design, anodic oxygen is directly used for efficient H2O2 generation at the modified cathode. Experimental results show that the modified cathode with the optimum PTFE content can produce 29.6 mg/L of H2O2, which is 16 times higher than the unmodified graphite felt cathode for a flow rate of 3 mL/min. Maximum H2O2 production, up to 30.7 mg/L, was obtained under the following conditions: 120 mA, 3 mL/min, initial pH 13, no external aeration.
RESUMO
Limit of detection (LOD) issues are ubiquitous in exposure assessment. Although there is an extensive literature on modeling exposure data under such imperfect measurement processes, including likelihood-based methods and multiple imputation, the standard practice continues to be naïve single imputation by a constant (e.g., (Equation is included in full-text article.)). In this article, we consider the situation where, due to the practical logistics of data accrual, sampling, and resource constraints, exposure data are analyzed in multiple batches where the LOD and the proportion of censored observations differ across batches. Compounding this problem is the potential for nonrandom assignment of samples to each batch, often driven by enrollment patterns and biosample storage. This issue is particularly important for binary outcome data where batches may have different levels of outcome enrichment. We first consider variants of existing methods to address varying LODs across multiple batches. We then propose a likelihood-based multiple imputation strategy to impute observations that are below the LOD while simultaneously accounting for differential batch assignment. Our simulation study shows that our proposed method has superior estimation properties (i.e., bias, coverage, statistical efficiency) compared to standard alternatives, provided that distributional assumptions are satisfied. Additionally, in most batch assignment configurations, complete-case analysis can be made unbiased by including batch indicator terms in the analysis model, although this strategy is less efficient relative to the proposed method. We illustrate our method by analyzing data from a cohort study in Puerto Rico that is investigating the relation between endocrine disruptor exposures and preterm birth.

A low maintenance, "self-cleaning" electrochemical approach is evaluated for regeneration of dye-loaded granular activated carbon (GAC). To do so, batch experiments were conducted using a low-cost granular activated carbon/stainless steel mesh (GACSS) composite cathode and a stable Ti/mixed metal oxides (Ti/MMO) anode without the addition of oxidants or iron catalysts. The GACSS cathode supports simultaneous H2O2 electrogeneration via the in situ supplied O2 from Ti/MMO anode and the subsequent H2O2 activation for ·OH generation, thus enabling the cracking of dye molecules adsorbed on GAC and regenerating the GAC's sorption capacity. Results show that a prolonged electrochemical processing for 12h will achieve up to 88.7% regeneration efficiency (RE). While RE decreases with multi-cycle application, up to 52.3% could still be achieved after 10 adsorption-regeneration cycles. To identify the mechanism, experiments were conducted to measure H2O2 electrogeneration, H2O2 activation, and ·OH generation by various GAC samples. The dye-loaded GAC and GAC treated after 10 adsorption-regeneration cycles were still capable of ·OH generation, which contributes to effective "self-cleaning" and regeneration over multi-cycles.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to certain xenobiotics has been associated with adverse birth outcomes. We examined the associations of triclocarban, phenols and parabens in a cohort of 922 pregnant women in Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats Program (PROTECT). METHODS: Urinary triclocarban, phenols and parabens were measured at three time points in pregnancy (visit 1: 16-20 weeks, visit 2: 20-24 weeks, visit 3: 24-28 weeks gestation). Multiple linear regression (MLR) models were conducted to regress gestational age and birthweight z-scores against each woman's log average concentrations of exposure biomarkers. Logistic regression models were conducted to calculate odds of preterm birth, small or large for gestational age (SGA and LGA) in association with each of the exposure biomarkers. An interaction term between the average urinary biomarker concentration and infant sex was included in models to identify effect modification. The results were additionally stratified by study visit to look for windows of vulnerability. Results were transformed into the change in the birth outcome for an inter-quartile-range difference in biomarker concentration (Δ). RESULTS: Average benzophenone-3, methyl- and propyl-paraben concentrations were associated with an increase in gestational age [(Δ 1.90 days; 95% CI: 0.54, 3.26); (Δ 1.63; 95% CI: 0.37, 2.89); (Δ 2.06; 95% CI: 0.63, 3.48), respectively]. Triclocarban was associated with a suggestive 2-day decrease in gestational age (Δâ¯-â¯1.96; 95% CI: -4.11, 0.19). Bisphenol A measured at visit 1 was associated with a suggestive increase in gestational age (Δ 1.37; 95% CI: -0.05, 2.79). Triclosan was positively associated with gestational age among males, and negatively associated with gestational age among females. Methyl-, butyl- and propyl-paraben were associated with significant 0.50-0.66 decreased odds of SGA. BPS was associated with an increase in the odds of SGA at visit 3, and a suggestive increase in the odds of LGA at visit 1. CONCLUSION: Benzophenone-3, methyl-paraben and propyl-paraben were associated with an increase in gestational age. Concentrations of triclocarban, which were much higher than reported in other populations, were associated with a suggestive decrease in gestational age. The direction of the association between triclosan and gestational age differed by infant sex. Parabens were associated with a decrease in SGA, and BPS was associated with both SGA and LGA depending on the study visit. Further studies are required to substantiate these findings.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to some phenols and parabens has been associated with adverse birth outcomes. Hormones may play an intermediate role between phenols and adverse outcomes. We examined the associations of phenol and paraben exposures with maternal reproductive and thyroid hormones in 602 pregnant women in Puerto Rico. Urinary triclocarban, phenol and paraben biomarkers, and serum hormones (estriol, progesterone, testosterone, sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), total triiodothyronine (T3), total thyroxine (T4), free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)) were measured at two visits during pregnancy. METHODS: Linear mixed models with a random intercept were constructed to examine the associations between hormones and urinary biomarkers. Results were additionally stratified by study visit. Results were transformed to hormone percent changes for an inter-quartile-range difference in exposure biomarker concentrations (%Δ). RESULTS: Bisphenol-S was associated with a decrease in CRH [(%Δ -11.35; 95% CI: -18.71, - 3.33), and bisphenol-F was associated with an increase in FT4 (%Δ: 2.76; 95% CI: 0.29, 5.22). Butyl-, methyl- and propylparaben were associated with decreases in SHBG [(%Δ: -5.27; 95% CI: -9.4, - 1.14); (%Δ: -3.53; 95% CI: -7.37, 0.31); (%Δ: -3.74; 95% CI: -7.76, 0.27)]. Triclocarban was positively associated with T3 (%Δ: 4.08; 95% CI: 1.18, 6.98) and T3/T4 ratio (%Δ: 4.67; 95% CI: -1.37, 6.65), and suggestively negatively associated with TSH (%Δ: -10.12; 95% CI: -19.47, 0.32). There was evidence of susceptible windows of vulnerability for some associations. At 24-28 weeks gestation, there was a positive association between 2,4-dichlorophenol and CRH (%Δ: 9.66; 95% CI: 0.67, 19.45) and between triclosan and estriol (%Δ: 13.17; 95% CI: 2.34, 25.2); and a negative association between triclocarban and SHBG (%Δ: -9.71; 95% CI:-19.1, - 0.27) and between bisphenol A and testosterone (%Δ: -17.37; 95% CI: -26.7, - 6.87). CONCLUSION: Phenols and parabens are associated with hormone levels during pregnancy. Further studies are required to substantiate these findings.

Major challenges for effective implementation of the Electro-Fenton (EF) water treatment process are that conventional efficient cathodes are relatively expensive, and H2O2 activation by Fe2+ may cause secondary pollution. Herein, we propose a low-cost activated carbon/stainless steel mesh (ACSS) composite cathode, where the SS mesh distributes the current and the AC simultaneously supports H2O2 electrogeneration, H2O2 activation, and organic compounds (OCs) adsorption. The oxygen-containing groups on the AC function as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) sites for H2O2 electrogeneration; while the porous configuration supply sufficient reactive surface area for ORR. 8.9 mg/L H2O2 was obtained with 1.5 g AC at 100 mA under neutral pH without external O2 supply. The ACSS electrode is also effective for H2O2 activation to generate â§OH, especially under neutral pH. Adsorption shows limited influence on both H2O2 electrogeneration and activation. The iron-free EF process enabled by the ACSS cathode is effective for reactive blue 19 (RB19) degradation. 61.5% RB19 was removed after 90 min and 74.3% TOC was removed after 720 min. Moreover, long-term stability test proved its relatively stable performance. Thus, the ACSS electrode configuration is promising for practical and cost-effective EF process for transformation of OCs in water.
RESUMO
Electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 offers a great potential for water treatment. However, a significant challenge is the development of efficient cathode materials for the process. Herein, we implement a practical electrochemical cathode modification to support efficient H2O2 electrogeneration via the reduction of dissolved anodic O2. Graphite felt (GF) is in situ anodically modified by electrode polarity reversal technique in an acid-free, low-conductivity electrolyte. The modified GF exhibits a significantly higher activity towards O2 reduction. Up to 183.3% higher H2O2 yield is obtained by the anodized GF due to the increased concentrations of oxygen-containing groups and the hydrophilicity of the surface, which facilitates electron and mass transfer between GF and the electrolyte. Another significant finding is the ability to produce H2O2 at a high yield under neutral pH and low current intensity by the modified GF (35% of the charge need to produce the same amount by unmodified GF). Long-term stability testing of the modified GF showed a decay in the electrode's activity for H2O2 production after 30 consecutive applications. However, the electrode regained its optimal activity for H2O2 production after a secondary modification by electrode polarity reversal. Finally, in situ electrochemically modified GF is more effective for removal of reactive blue 19 (RB19, 20 mg/L) and ibuprofen (IBP, 10 mg/L) by the electro-Fenton process. The modified GF removed 62.7% of RB19 compared to only 28.1% by the unmodified GF in batch reactors after 50 min. Similarly, 75.3% IBP is removed by the modified GF compared to 57.6% by the unmodified GF in a flow-through reactor after 100 min.
RESUMO
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) mitigation and water treatment are two key aspects towards a sustainable environment, and simultaneous achievement of these two goals is extremely attractive. Inspired by the iron ion catalyzed auto-oxidation of aqueous SO2 (i.e., Fe(II)/sulfite process), that generates intermediary sulfate radical able to oxidize organic compounds, we propose a feasible energy-water-environment nexus by using waste SO2 to alleviate water contamination. As a demonstration, electrolysis is used to assist Fe(II)/sulfite (i.e., electro/Fe(II)/sulfite) process to enhance contaminant removals. Results showed 91% of 10 µM ibuprofen (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) contaminant at neutral pH was removed, due to sulfate radical oxidation. Synergy mechanisms of electro/Fe(II)/sulfite process were revealed. Moreover, the electro/Fe(II)/sulfite process could effectively degrade contaminants in water bodies from fields, indicating its promising practical application. Energetic analysis indicated that electric treatment cost is 8.65 cent/m3, and is affordable by most water treatment plants. Possible procedures to realize the proposed energy-water-environment nexus were also suggested. The strategy proposed in this study adds new value to the waste produced in energy production and will create renewed interest considering its potential use towards environmental treatment.
RESUMO
The in situ generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for water treatment is more practical than the use of liquid H2O2, which is costly to store and transport. Calcium peroxide (CaO2), a solid carrier of H2O2, can release H2O2 on dissolution in water. However, the constant H2O2 release rate of CaO2 has been a bottleneck constraining its wider application. In this study, a practical electrochemical method using a divided cell is developed to control the rate of release of H2O2 from CaO2. The results show that the rate of H2O2 release from CaO2 is enhanced in the anolyte. The increase in H2O2 release is positively correlated with the current. Under a current of 100 mA, the H2O2 concentration was 2.5 times higher after 30 min of electrolysis than in the control experiment in which no current was applied. Water electrolysis in the anodic compartment generates protons that not only: (i) en-hance dissolution of CaO2 and release of H2O2, but also (ii) neutralize the alkaline pH resulting from CaO2 dissolution, thus providing new advantages for the use of CaO2. This effective technique may be suitable for the sophisticated control of H2O2 release in environmental applications.
RESUMO
The performance of the Electro-Fenton (EF) process for contaminant degradation depends on the rate of H2O2 production at the cathode via 2-electron dissolved O2 reduction. However, the low solubility of O2 (≈1×10-3 mol dm-3) limits H2O2 production. Herein, a novel and practical strategy that enables the synergistic utilization of O2 from the bulk electrolyte and ambient air for efficient H2O2 production is proposed. Compared with a conventional "submerged" cathode, the H2O2 concentration obtained using the "floating" cathode is 4.3 and 1.5 times higher using porous graphite felt (GF) and reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) foam electrodes, respectively. This surprising enhancement results from the formation of a three-phase interface inside the porous cathode, where the O2 from ambient air is also utilized for H2O2 production. The contribution of O2 from ambient air varies depending on the cathode material and is calculated to be 76.7% for the GF cathode and 35.6% for the RVC foam cathode. The effects of pH, current, and mixing on H2O2 production are evaluated. Finally, the EF process enhanced by the "floating" cathode degraded 78.3% of the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen after 120 min compared to only 25.4% using a conventional "submerged" electrode, without any increase in the cost.
