BACKGROUND: Globally, COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be instrumental for promoting population health by reducing illness from SARS-CoV-2. Vaccine certificates emerged as a potentially promising solution for encouraging vaccination and facilitating the safe reopening of society, however, they were controversial due to criticisms of infringing upon individual rights. While there is extensive literature describing the ethical, legal, and public health implications of vaccine certificates, there is currently a gap in knowledge about the association of vaccine certificates on vaccine uptake during the COVID-19 pandemic and barriers and facilitators to their use. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this scoping review are to (i) describe the existing literature on the association of vaccine certificates on the rates of COVID-19 vaccine uptake across several countries and (ii) describe the intrinsic and extrinsic barriers or facilitators that moderate this relationship. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review based on PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRSIMA-ScR) guidelines. We searched three bibliographic databases (APA PsychInfo, Embase Classic + Embase, OVID-Medline) and preprint severs during the first week of July 2023. Three reviewers independently screened the studies based on pre-specified eligibility criteria and performed quality assessments of the primary literature and data extraction. RESULTS: Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria. 14 or these were surveys and 2 were modelling studies. The majority documented that vaccine certificates were significantly associated with increased rates of COVID-19 vaccine uptake (n = 12), motivated by factors such as travel/employer requirements, influence from the government/peers, and trust in the safety, efficacy, and science behind COVID-19 vaccines. Three studies had non-significant or mixed findings. Only one study found a significant decrease in COVID-19 vaccine uptake, motivated by pervasive distrust in the QR code-based system of digital vaccine certificates in Russia. Quality of survey studies was generally high. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide insights into the existing literature on vaccine certificates association with vaccine uptake in several different jurisdictions and barriers and facilitators to their uptake. This information can be used to guide future examinations of the implementation of vaccine certificates and more effective implementations.

BACKGROUND: Poor dietary intake is common in hospitalised older people. A targeted mealtime intervention is needed to improve nutrition care and dietary intake, especially for those at risk of malnutrition. OBJECTIVES: This quality improvement project designed, implemented and evaluated a mealtime assistance bundle consisting of care measures driven by the hospital nursing team. The aims were to improve the mealtime care process to promote dietary intake of the hospitalised older people and to improve nursing staff's knowledge, attitude and practice in malnutrition. METHODS: This project adopted a pre-post design, targeting older people aged 65 years and above, who were admitted to a general medical unit in a regional hospital in Singapore. A mealtime assistance bundle consisting of seven care measures, using the acronym CANFEED, was implemented for older adults at risk of malnutrition. Outcome measures on the amount of dietary intake during meals through chart reviews and surveys of nursing staff using Malnutrition Knowledge, Attitudes and perceived Practices (M-KAP) questionnaire were performed before and after implementation. RESULTS: There were fewer older adults with poor intake in the post-implementation group than the pre-implementation group. Among those at risk of malnutrition, older adults in the post-implementation group had higher average intake of all provided meals as well as the protein-dense main dish. Significant improvements were noted in the total scores rated by the nursing staff in both the Knowledge-Attitude subscale and Practice subscale of the M-KAP questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS: Integrating a nurse-driven mealtime assistance bundle into usual care may have positive outcomes on nutritional intake of hospitalised older people at risk of malnutrition, and on knowledge, attitude and practice of hospital nurses in nutrition care. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Nurses play a critical role in nutrition care for hospitalised older people. Continuing efforts to improve nutritional intake of hospitalised older people should focus on staff education, building a multidisciplinary food-promoting culture and patient, family and community empowerment. More efficient clinical processes incorporating information technology with the EMR to support better nutrition care of the hospitalised older people are needed.

Radioactive particles often contain very high radioactivity concentrations and are widespread. They pose a potential risk to human health and the environment. Their detection, quantification, and characterization are crucial if we are to understand their impact. Here, we present the use of a real-time autoradiography gaseous detector (using parallel ionization multiplier) to expedite and improve the accuracy of radioactive particle screening in complex environmental samples. First, standard particles were used to assess the detector capabilities (spatial resolution, spectrometry, and artefact contributions), then, we applied the technique to more complex and environmentally relevant samples. The real-time autoradiography technique provides data with a spatial resolution (≲100 µm) suitable for particle analysis in complex samples. Further, it can differentiate between particles predominantly emitting alpha and beta radiation. Here, the technique is applied to radioactive cesium-rich microparticles collected from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear exclusion zone, showing their accurate detection, and demonstrating the viability of real-time autoradiography in environmental scenarios. Indeed, for more complex samples (radioactive particles in a less radioactive heterogeneous background mix of minerals), the technique permits relatively high selectivity for radioactive particle screening (up to 61.2% success rate) with low false positive percentages (~ 1%).

Cesium-134 and -137 are prevalent, long-lived, radio-toxic contaminants released into the environment during nuclear accidents. Large quantities of insoluble, respirable Cs-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were released into the environment during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Monitoring for CsMPs in environmental samples is essential to understand the impact of nuclear accidents. The current detection method used to screen for CsMPs (phosphor screen autoradiography) is slow and inefficient. We propose an improved method: real-time autoradiography that uses parallel ionization multiplier gaseous detectors. This technique permits spatially resolved measurement of radioactivity while providing spectrometric data from spatially heterogeneous samples-a potential step-change technique for use after nuclear accidents for forensic analysis. With our detector configuration, the minimum detectable activities are sufficiently low for detecting CsMPs. Further, for environmental samples, sample thickness does not detrimentally affect detector signal quality. The detector can measure and resolve individual radioactive particles ≥465 µm apart. Real-time autoradiography is a promising tool for radioactive particle detection.

A contaminated zone elongated toward Futaba Town, north-northwest of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), contains highly radioactive particles released from reactor Unit 1. There are uncertainties associated with the physio-chemical properties and environmental impacts of these particles. In this study, 31 radioactive particles were isolated from surface soils collected 3.9 km north-northwest of the FDNPP. Two of these particles have the highest particle-associated 134+137Cs activity ever reported for Fukushima (6.1 × 105 and 2.5 × 106 Bq per particle after decay-correction to March 2011). The new, highly-radioactive particle labeled FTB1 is an aggregate of flaky silicate nanoparticles with an amorphous structure containing ~0.8 wt% Cs, occasionally associated with SiO2 and TiO2 inclusions. FTB1 likely originates from the reactor building, which was damaged by a H2 explosion, after adsorbing volatilized Cs. The 134+137Cs activity in the other highly radioactive particle labeled FTB26 exceeded 106 Bq. FTB26 has a glassy carbon core and a surface that is embedded with numerous micro-particles: Pb-Sn alloy, fibrous Al-silicate, Ca-carbonate or hydroxide, and quartz. The isotopic signatures of the micro-particles indicate neutron capture by B, Cs volatilization, and adsorption of natural Ba. The composition of the micro-particles on FTB26 reflects the composition of airborne particles at the moment of the H2 explosion. Owing to their large size, the health effects of the highly radioactive particles are likely limited to external radiation during static contact with skin; the highly radioactive particles are thus expected to have negligible health impacts for humans. By investigating the mobility of the highly radioactive particles, we can better understand how the radiation dose transfers through environments impacted by Unit 1. The highly radioactive particles also provide insights into the atmospheric conditions at the time of the Unit 1 explosion and the physio-chemical phenomena that occurred during reactor meltdown.

BACKGROUND: Severe hemolytic disease of the newborn leads to the release of pro-oxidative free heme (FH). Heme oxygenase (HO) is primarily responsible for detoxifying FH. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effects of HO in a model of heme overload. METHODS: For in vitro studies, NIH3T3 HO-1-luc cells were incubated with 10, 30, or 60 µM FH or methemalbumin (MHA). HO-1 promoter activity was assessed 3, 6, and 24 h after treatment. Cell survival was indexed by viability assays. For in vivo studies, 1- and 5-week-old wild-type (Wt) or HO-1-heterozygous (Het, HO-1+/-) mice were given 60 µmol FH or MHA/kg intraperitoneally. After 24 h, plasma aspartate aminotransferease (AST)/alanine transaminase (ALT) and hemopexin, liver HO activity, and lipid peroxidation (LP) were determined. RESULTS: In HO-1-luc cells, HO-1 promoter activity peaked 6 h after incubation with 30 µM FH (1.6-fold) or 60 µM MHA (2.1-fold) over baseline. Twenty-four hours after exposure to 60 µM FH, a decrease in viability of 80% was found, compared with no decrease after exposure to 60 µM MHA. In 1-week-old Wt and HO-1 Het pups given 60 µmol FH/kg, HO activity significantly increased 3.5- and 3.1-fold, respectively. No changes in LP or AST/ALT levels were observed. In adult Wt and HO-1 Het mice, HO activity increased (3.0- and 2.6-fold, respectively). LP and AST levels significantly increased 28.4- and 2.7-fold, respectively, in adult HO-1 Het mice. Hemopexin levels at baseline were higher in adults compared with newborns for both Wt and Het mice. In addition, FH induced hemopexin levels in both adults and newborns, but to a lesser degree in newborns. CONCLUSIONS: FH is highly toxic in vitro, but its toxicity is abolished when bound to albumin. Newborns appear to be protected from the pro-oxidative effects of FH, which may be mediated by heme binding and a higher absolute HO activity at baseline and after FH-mediated induction.

We examined the feasibility and perception of cell-based (texting, voicemail [VM], and email/social media), health-related communication with adolescents in Genesee County, MI, where 22% reside below the poverty level. Results of an anonymous survey found that 86% of respondents owned a cell phone, 87% had data, 96% texted, 90.5% emailed/used social media, and 68% had VM. Most adolescents were interested in cell-based communication via texting (52%), VM (37%), and email/social media (31%). Interest in types of health communication included appointment reminders (99% texting; 94% VM; 95% email/social media), shot reminders (84.5% texting; 74.5% VM; 81% email/social media), call for test results (71.5% texting; 75% VM; 65% email/social media), medication reminders (63% texting; 54% VM; 58% e-mail/social media), and health tips (36% texting; 18.5% VM; 73% email/social media). Cell-based health-related communication with adolescents is feasible even within low socioeconomic status populations, primarily via texting. Health providers should embrace cell-based patient communication.
