Environmental stress triggered by climate change can alter the plant's metabolite profile, which affects its physiology and performance. This is particularly important in medicinal species because their economic value depends on the richness of their phytocompounds. We aimed to characterize how water deficit modulated the medicinal species Melia azedarach's lipophilic profile and antioxidant status. Young plants were exposed to water deficit for 20 days, and lipophilic metabolite profile and the antioxidant capacity were evaluated. Leaves of M. azedarach are rich in important fatty acids and oleamide. Water deficit increased the radical scavenging capacity, total phenol, flavonoids, and catechol pools, and the accumulation of ß-sitosterol, myo-inositol, succinic acid, sucrose, d-glucose and derivatives, d-psicofuranose, d-(+)-fructofuranose, and the fatty acids stearic, α-linolenic, linoleic and palmitic acids. These responses are relevant to protecting the plant against climate change-related stress and also increase the nutritional and antioxidant quality of M. azedarach leaves.

In recent decades, atmospheric pollution led to a progressive reduction of the ozone layer with a consequent increase in UV-B radiation. Despite the high adaptation of olive trees to the Mediterranean environment, the progressive increase of UV-B radiation is a risk factor for olive tree cultivation. It is therefore necessary to understand how high levels of UV-B radiation affect olive plants and to identify olive varieties which are better adapted. In this study we analyzed two Italian olive varieties subjected to chronic UV-B stress. We focused on the effects of UV-B radiation on RubisCO, in terms of quantity, enzymatic activity and isoform composition. In addition, we also analyzed changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPox) to get a comprehensive picture of the antioxidant system. We also evaluated the effects of UV-B on the enzyme sucrose synthase. The overall damage at biochemical level was also assessed by analyzing changes in Hsp70, a protein triggered under stress conditions. The results of this work indicate that the varieties (Giarraffa and Olivastra Seggianese) differ significantly in the use of specific antioxidant defense systems, as well as in the activity and isoform composition of RubisCO. Combined with a different use of sucrose synthase, the overall picture shows that Giarraffa optimized the use of GPox and opted for a targeted choice of RubisCO isoforms, in addition to managing the content of sucrose synthase, thereby saving energy during critical stress points.

This study aimed to determine the AR of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) to commercial drugs in sheep flocks naturally infected, grazing in irrigated (IA) and dry (DA) areas of the semiarid region in northeastern Brazil. Fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed at 10 farms. From each flock, 36 adult sheep were selected and divided into five groups (G1 (0.08% ivermectin), G2 (10% albendazole), G3 (5% levamisole), G4 (1% moxidectin), G5 (10% closantel) and one control group, G6). All the commercial drugs were found to reduce the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Resistance to ivermectin (37.1%), albendazole (52.1%), and levamisole (52.0%) was detected at all the farms, but nematodes proved to be susceptible to moxidectin (87.9%) and closantel (83.9%). The overall average efficacy of the commercial drugs was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in DA (49.2%), where moxidectin (90.4%) showed high effectiveness. The presence of the parasite Haemonchus contortus predominated at all the farms. The variables irrigated area (P = 0.002), intensive breeding (P = 0.018), uncovered enclosures (P = 0.05), cultivated (P = 0.043) and native/cultivated (P = 0.007) pastures, and rotational grazing (P = 0.013) were significantly associated with GIN infection; irrigated area (P = 0.009), semi-intensive breeding (P = 0.05), rotational grazing (P = 0.045), cultivated (P = 0.021) and native/cultivated (P = 0.04) pastures, and estimated weighing of animals (P = 0.002) were significantly associated with AR. Therefore, improved management practices and strategic deworming must be implemented to prevent the development of AR.

MAIN CONCLUSION: A water-deficit period, leading to stomatal control and overexpression of protective proteins (sHSP and DHN), contributes to olive´s tolerance to later imposed stress episodes. Aquaporins modulation is important in olive recovery. Olive is traditionally cultivated in dry farming or in high water demanding irrigated orchards. The impact of climate change on these orchards remains to unveil, as heat and drought episodes are increasing in the Mediterranean region. To understand how young plants face such stress episodes, olive plants growing in pots were exposed to well-irrigated and non-irrigated treatments. Subsequently, plants from each treatment were either exposed to 40 °C for 2 h or remained under control temperature. After treatments, all plants were allowed to grow under well-irrigated conditions (recovery). Leaves were compared for photosynthesis, relative water content, mineral status, pigments, carbohydrates, cell membrane permeability, lipid peroxidation and expression of the protective proteins' dehydrin (OeDHN1), heat-shock proteins (OeHSP18.3), and aquaporins (OePIP1.1 and OePIP2.1). Non-irrigation, whilst increasing carbohydrates, reduced some photosynthetic parameters to values below the ones of the well-irrigated plants. However, when both groups of plants were exposed to heat, well-irrigated plants suffered more drastic decreases of net CO2 assimilation rate and chlorophyll b than non-irrigated plants. Overall, OeDHN1 and OeHSP18.3 expression, which was increased in non-irrigated treatment, was potentiated by heat, possibly to counteract the increase of lipid peroxidation and loss of membrane integrity. Plants recovered similarly from both irrigation and temperature treatments, and recovery was associated with increased aquaporin expression in plants exposed to one type of stress (drought or heat). These data represent an important contribution for further understanding how dry-farming olive will cope with drought and heat episodes.

BACKGROUND: Physiopathological processes in hypertensive heart disease are controlled by complex interactions between cardiomyocytes, extracellular matrix, microvasculature and other cells present in the myocardium. OBJECTIVE: To analyze morphological changes in hypertensive cardiopathy and to describe and compare findings in order to help clarify determinant factors. METHODS: 42 fragments of the left ventricular myocardium and circumflex branch of the left coronary artery were obtained from individuals autopsied at the Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM) in the period ranging from 1984 to 2018. Groups were split into individuals with hypertensive heart disease (HD) and individuals without heart disease (ND). Wall thickness was measured with a digital caliper and Computed Tomography. Quantification of collagen fibers was conducted by computerized morphometry and mast cell density was assessed by immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: There was a significant increase of heart weight in the HD group compared to the ND group, (p = 0.0002). There was a significant increase of thickness of the middle third of the free wall in the HD group compared to the ND group, (p = 0.04). There was a significant increase of collagen fibers in the left ventricle in the HD group compared to the ND group, (p < 0.0001). Concerning mast cell density, there was a significant increase in the left ventricle of individuals with HD immuno-labeled by the set anti-chymase/anti-tryptase (p < 0.0001). There was a significant increase of mast cell density in the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery of individuals with HD immuno-labeled by the set anti-chymase/anti-tryptase (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Mast cells are involved in the development of hypertensive heart disease, contributing to the remodeling of collagen fibers in this disease.

Both depression and cancer are related to a dysregulation of inflammatory and immune pathways. Indeed, depression is associated with increased expression of interferon-γ, interleukin-1ß, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). In contrast, reductions of the activity of major histocompatibility complex protein molecules - class I and class II and natural killer cells are also observed. Similarly, cancers present elevated levels of TNF-α, reduced major histocompatibility complex class I and II, and natural killer cells. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), the rate-limiting enzyme of the tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) pathway, is induced by interferon-γ, interleukin-6, TNF-α, and oxidative stress. IDO catabolizes tryptophan, the amino acid precursor of serotonin and melatonin, to the metabolites collectively called TRYCATs. TRYCAT pathway activation is accompanied by downregulation of immune cell proliferation, function, and survival. The increase in IDO activity in tumor microenvironments is related to tumor cell escape from immune surveillance. Despite the evidence of inflammatory mechanisms underlying cancer and depression, it is important to emphasize that both diseases are heterogeneous and, as such, inflammatory mechanisms may not be relevant to all patients. Thus, the purpose of this review is to examine whether detrimental TRYCATs - synthesis of which increases in depression and cancer - are a pathophysiological link between the two diseases, and whether IDO is a potential pharmacological target for the treatment of the comorbid depression and cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic extrafascial hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy after primary chemoradiation (CRT) in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) without evidence of nodal metastasis. BACKGROUND: Currently, the standard of care for patients with advanced cervical cancer is concurrent CRT. There is an unequivocal correlation between presence of residual disease and risk of local relapse. Nevertheless, the importance of hysterectomy in adjuvant setting remains controversial. METHODS: Prospective study with patients affected by bulky LACC (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB2 up to IIB) treated initially with radical CRT who underwent laparoscopic surgery 12 weeks after therapy conclusion. Inclusion criteria were absence of signs for extrapelvic or nodal involvement on initial imaging staging, as well as complete clinical and radiologic response. RESULTS: From January 2011 to March 2013, 33 patients were endoscopically operated. The mean age was 44 years (range, 21-77 years). Histologic finding revealed squamous cell carcinoma in 19 (60%) cases and adenocarcinoma in 14 (40%) cases. International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stages distribution were as follow: 1B2, n = 3 (9%); IIA, n = 4 (11%); and IIB, n = 26 (80%). The mean pretherapeutic tumor size was 5.2 cm (range, 4-10.2 cm). Estimated blood loss was 80 mL (range, 40-150 mL), and mean operative time was approximately 104 minutes (range, 75-130 minutes). No casualty or conversion to laparotomy occurred. Hospital stay was in average 1.7 days (range, 1-4 days). Significant complication occurred in 12% of the cases; 2 vaginal vault dehiscence, 1 pelvic infection, and 1 ureterovaginal fistula. Nine (27%) patients had pathologic residual disease, and in 78% of these cases, histologic finding was adenocarcinoma (P = -0.048). All patients had free margins. After median follow-up of 16 months, all women have no signs of local recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic extrafascial hysterectomy (completion surgery) after primary CRT in patients with apparent node-negative LACC is a feasible and safe strategy to improve tumor local control mainly in cases of adenocarcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Biological monoclonal antibodies play a pivotal role in cancer treatment, with biosimilars significantly enhancing their accessibility. In Brazil's ethnically diverse setting, real-world evidence is crucial for assessing the effectiveness and applicability of these therapies in routine clinical practice. METHODS: We performed a multicentric, observational, prospective real-world study on biosimilar trastuzumab-dkst for adjuvant treatment of early HER2-positive breast cancer in Brazilian patients. Data were collected using a case-report form. RESULTS: Of the 176 recruited, we present data from the first 59 patients (mean age 51.7 ± 12.9 years) who had completed treatment with trastuzumab-dkst. The mean time from diagnosis to the first adjuvant treatment with trastuzumab-dkst was 5.5 ± 2.7 months. Of the patients, 59% of patients achieved at least a 30-month follow-up. The 31.7-month invasive disease-free survival rate (IDFS) was 94.5% (95% CI 83.9-98.2%) and median IDFS was not achieved, since only three patients had invasive disease recurrence. The overall survival rate was 100% until the last assessment. The observed adverse events were similar to those presented by other studies using biosimilar or reference trastuzumab. Four serious adverse events (8.5%) were observed. A reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction of at least 10% was observed in 16.9% of participants. There was no treatment interruption, and three participants (5.1%) had their trastuzumab-dkst dose reduced. CONCLUSION: Our study reinforces the existing pivotal data, underscoring the real-world efficacy and safety of biosimilar trastuzumab-dkst in the adjuvant treatment for early HER2-positive breast cancer. The preliminary long-term effectiveness and safety data we present further validate trastuzumab-dkst's role as a cost-saving alternative in oncological care. These findings have important implications for improving patient access to crucial treatments and for the more efficient use of healthcare resources. GOV REGISTRATION: NCT03892655.

BACKGROUND: This study examined associations between scores of depression (DEPs), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase activity (CAT) in master athletes and untrained controls. METHODS: Participants were master sprinters (MS, n = 24; 50.31 ± 6.34 year), endurance runners (ER, n = 11; 51.35 ± 9.12 year), untrained middle-aged (CO, n = 13; 47.21 ± 8.61 year), and young untrained (YU, n = 15; 23.70 ± 4.02 year). CAT, SOD, and TBARS were measured in plasma using commercial kits. DEPs were measured by the Beck Depression Inventory-II. An ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson's, and Spearman's correlations were applied, with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: The CATs of MS and YU [760.4 U·µL 1 ± 170.1 U·µL 1 and 729.9 U·µL 1 ± 186.9 U·µL 1] were higher than CO and ER. The SOD levels in the YU and ER [84.20 U·mL-1 ± 8.52 U·mL-1 and 78.24 U·mL-1 ± 6.59 U·mL-1 (p < 0.0001)] were higher than CO and MS. The TBARS in CO [11.97 nmol·L-1 ± 2.35 nmol·L-1 (p < 0.0001)] was higher than in YU, MS and ER. MS had lower DEPs compared to the YU [3.60 ± 3.66 vs. 12.27 ± 9.27 (p = 0.0002)]. A negative correlation was found between CAT and DEPs for master athletes [r = -0.3921 (p = 0.0240)] and a weak correlation [r = -0.3694 (p = 0.0344)] was found between DEPs and the CAT/TBARS ratio. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the training model of master sprinters may be an effective strategy for increasing CAT and reducing DEPs.

Sirt1 is an enzyme involved in several anti-aging pathways. Associations between Sirt1, age, and body fat (BF) were assessed in master sprinters (MS; n = 35; 50.25 ±5.93 yr.), untrained young non-athletes (UY; n = 32; 23.78 ±3.98 yr.), and untrained middle-aged (UMA; n = 24; 47.29 ±8.04 yr.). BF was assessed using a skinfold protocol, and Sirt1 was measured in plasma by using commercial kits. Sirt1 of MS (17.18 ±4.77 ng/mL) was higher than UMA (6.36 ±2.29 ng/mL; p<0.0001) and did not differ from UY (20.26 ±6.20 ng/mL). Relative BF of MS was lower than UMA (12.71 ±4.07% vs. 22.13 ±4.18%; p<0.0001). Sirt1 was negatively correlated with chronological age (r = -0.735; p<0.0001) when combining UY and UMA in the analysis. However, when Sirt1 of MS and UY was analyzed together, no significant relationship between Sirt1 and chronological age was observed (r = -0.243; p = 0.083). Sirt1 correlated inversely with BF (r = -0.743; p<0.0001) for UY and UMA. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that being either a young or master athlete and body adiposity are possible predictors of Sirt1 levels. MS and UY were associated with higher levels of Sirt1, while UMA and increased BF were associated with lower levels of this enzyme. The relationships among Sirt1, BF, and chronological age of young and middle-aged non-athletes were not statistically significant when the middle-aged participants were MS. These findings suggest possible links between Sirt1 and body composition, which may play roles in the rate of biological aging.HighlightsLower levels of Sirt1 are associated with higher body fat.Master athlete lifestyle seems to promote higher Sirt1 Levels.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate feasibility and safety of a novel technique for uterine morcellation in patients scheduled for laparoscopic treatment of gynecologic malignances. BACKGROUND: The laparoscopic management of uterine malignancies is progressively gaining importance and popularity over laparotomy. Nevertheless, minimal invasive surgery is of limited use when patients have enlarged uterus or narrow vagina. In these cases, conventional uterus morcellation could be a solution but should not be recommended due to risks of tumor dissemination. METHODS: Prospective pilot study of women with endometrial cancer in which uterus removal was a realistic concern due to both organ size and proportionality. Brief technique description: after completion of total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral anexectomy, a nylon with polyurethane Lapsac® is vaginally inserted into the abdomen; the specimen is placed inside the pouch that will be closed and rotated 180° toward the vaginal vault and, posteriorly, pushed into the vaginal canal; in the transvaginal phase, the surgeon pulls the edges of the bag up to vaginal introitus and all vaginal walls will be covered; inside the pouch, the operator performs a uterus bisection-morcellation. RESULTS: In our series of 8 cases, we achieved successful completion in all patients, without conversion to laparotomy. Average operative time, blood loss and length of hospitalization were favorable. One patient presented with a vesicovaginal fistula. CONCLUSION: The vaginal morcellation following oncologic principles is a feasible method that permits a rapid uterine extraction and may avoid a number of unnecessary laparotomies. Further studies are needed to confirm the oncological safety of the technique.

Cork oak (Quercus suber) is a species native to Mediterranean areas and its adaptation to the increasingly prevalent abiotic stresses, such as soil salinization, remain unknown. In sequence with recent studies on salt stress response in the leaf, it is fundamental to uncover the plasticity of roots directly exposed to high salinity to better understand how Q. suber copes with salt stress. In the present study we aimed to unveil the antioxidants and key-genes involved in the stress-responses (early vs. later responses) of Q. suber roots exposed to high salinity. Two-month-old Q. suber plants were watered with 300 mM NaCl solution and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, lipid peroxidation and the relative expression of genes related to stress response were analysed 8 h and 6 days after salt treatment. After an 8 h of exposure, roots activated the expression of QsLTI30 and QsFAD7 genes involved in stress membrane protection, and QsRAV1 and QsCZF1 genes involved in tolerance and adaptation. As a result of the continued salinity stress (6 days), lipid peroxidation increased, which was associated with an upregulation of QsLTI30 gene. Moreover, other protective mechanisms were activated, such as the upregulation of genes related to antioxidant status, QsCSD1 and QsAPX2, and the increase of the antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, concomitantly with total antioxidant activity and phenols. These data suggest a response dependent on the time of salinity exposure, leading Q. suber roots to adopt protective complementary strategies to deal with salt stress.

Extreme climate events are increasingly frequent, and the 2017 summer was particularly critical in the Mediterranean region. Olive is one of the most important species of this region, and these climatic events represent a threat to this culture. However, it remains unclear how olive trees adjust the antioxidant enzymatic system and modulate the metabolite profile under field stress conditions. Leaves from two distinct adjacent areas of an olive orchard, one dry and the other hydrated, were harvested. Tree water status, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes, and phenolic and lipophilic metabolite profiles were analyzed. The environmental conditions of the 2017 summer caused a water deficit in olive trees of the dry area, and this low leaf water availability was correlated with the reduction of long-chain alkanes and fatty acids. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide radical (O2•-) levels increased in the trees collected from the dry area, but lipid peroxidation did not augment. The antioxidant response was predominantly marked by guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX) activity that regulates the H2O2 harmful effect and by the action of flavonoids (luteolin-7-O-glucuronide) that may act as reactive oxygen species scavengers. Secoiridoids adjustments may also contribute to stress regulation. This work highlights for the first time the protective role of some metabolite in olive trees under field drought conditions.

An inclusion complex between the dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor pyrimethamine (PYR) and alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) was prepared and characterized. From the phase-solubility diagram, a linear increase of PYR solubility was verified as a function of alpha-CD concentration, suggesting the formation of a soluble complex. A 1:1 host-guest stoichiometry can be proposed according to the Job's plot, obtained from the difference of PYR fluorescence intensity in the presence and absence of alpha-CD. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements provided additional evidences of complexation such as the absence of the endothermic peak assigned to the melting of the drug. The inclusion mode characterized by two-dimensional (1)H NMR spectroscopy (ROESY) involves penetration of the p-chlorophenyl ring into the alpha-CD cavity, in agreement to the orientation optimized by molecular modeling methods.

Although the salivary glands present several functions, there are few studies evaluating these glands in Chagas disease (CD). This study aimed to compare the percentage of collagen, the presence of inflammation, the density of chimase and tryptase mast cells, the area and density of lingual salivary gland acini in autopsied individuals with and without (CD). We analyzed 400 autopsy reports performed in a tertiary public hospital from 1999 to 2015 and selected all the cases in which tongue fragments were collected (27 cases), 12 with chronic CD without megaesophagus (CH) and 15 without CD (non-chagasic - NC). The histological sections of the tongue were stained by Picrosirius red for collagen evaluation and Hematoxylin-eosin for morphometric evaluation of salivary gland acini and inflammation. Anti-chimase and anti-tryptase antibodies were used for the immunohistochemical evaluation of mast cells. The chagasic patients presented higher volume and lower density of salivary glands acini. There was no difference in the collagen percentage, inflammation and density of mast cell chymase and tryptase between the groups. Although we did not observe a significant difference between the groups regarding the collagen percentage, inflammatory process and mast cell density, our results suggest that even without megaesophagus, chagasic patients present hypertrophy of the lingual salivary glands and lower acinar density probably due to mechanisms independent of the esophagus-glandular stimulus.

RESUMO

In this work we prepared and characterized an inclusion complex of the dihydropteroate synthase inhibitor sulfadiazine (SDZ) in 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPBCD). From the phase-solubility diagram we observed an increase in the water solubility of the drug, calculating a binding constant of 1879M(-1). The inclusion mode involves a NH(2)-in orientation of the drug in the HPBCD cavity, according to the 2D NMR (ROESY) data and confirmed by molecular modeling using the semiempirical PM6 and RM1 methods.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze muscle activation of lower limbs (LL) of subjects in hippotherapy sessions. METHODS: The study included 10 healthy subjects, five male and five female, with an average age of 24.03 (±4.06) years. Subjects underwent four hippotherapy sessions of 30 min with interval of one week, and each session was performed with a different type of mount material in the following order: 1st performed with saddle and feet in the stirrups (S1), 2nd with saddle and feet off the stirrups (S2), 3rd with blanket and feet off the stirrup (S3) and 4th with blanket and feet in the stirrups (S4). Surface electromyographies were performed at 1, 10, 20 and 30 min of session, and the electrodes were placed on muscle bellies bilaterally on the muscles rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and tibialis anterior. RESULTS: The analysis of muscle activity during these four sessions showed a significant difference in muscle recruitment in LL, and sessions with blanket and feet in the stirrups provided greater muscle activation of quadriceps and tibialis anterior with the horse at step gait (p = 0.0002). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that feet positioned in the stirrups is a relevant factor for greater muscle recruitment in LL to maintain postural balance while riding, especially using a blanket as mount material for ride a horse.

Introdução: O tabagismo é capaz de causar intoxicação química desencadeando efeitos deletérios de natureza aguda ou crônica em diversas estruturas do corpo, afetando significativamente a saúde. É considerada uma epidemia que mais ameaça à saúde pública em todo o mundo. Objetivo: Para tanto, esse estudo objetiva-se analisar o grau de dependência, a história tabágica, a caracterização sociodemográfica a adesão terapêutica dos usuários em tratamento de cessação do tabagismo atendidos pela rede CAPS-AD em um município do interior do Ceará. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo e descritivo. Foi desenvolvido por meio de reuniões coletivas com o grupo de cessação tabágica, os usuários foram convidados a participar da pesquisa, respeitando o princípio da autonomia, após apresentação dos objetivos e esclarecimentos a cerda do estudo. Resultados: Foram recrutados 19 usuários em tratamento de cessação tabágica. Desses, 10 participantes eram do sexo masculino e 9 ao sexo feminino. Com relação a faixa etária, 42,11% estavam entre as idades de 46 a 55 anos e a maioria dos participantes não tinha o ensino fundamental completo e eram civilmente casados. Analisando o IMC, 57,9% estavam com peso normal e 21,05% com sobrepeso. Mais de 80% iniciaram o vício na adolescência e68% relataram não conviver com fumantes em casa. Em relação à adesão terapêutica, cerca de 52% foram satisfatórias. Conclusão: De um modo geral observa-se que a população do estudo, tem um elevado índice de dependência à nicotina em decorrência do prolongado tempo de uso, do início precoce e de uma procura de tratamento tardia.


Introduction: Smoking is able to cause chemical intoxication triggering deleterious effects of acute or chronic nature in several structures of the body, significantly affecting health. It is considered an epidemic that most threatens public health worldwide. Objective: Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the degree of dependence, smoking history, sociodemographic characterization, and therapeutic adherence of users in smoking cessation treatment assisted by the CAPS-AD network in a city in the interior of Ceará. Methods: This is a quantitative and descriptive study. It was developed through collective meetings with the smoking cessation group, users were invited to participate in the research, respecting the principle of autonomy, after presentation of the objectives and clarifications about the study. Results: Nineteen users in smoking cessation treatment were recruited. Of these, 10 participants were male and 9 were female. Regarding the age range, 42.11% were between 46 and 55 years old, and most participants did not have complete elementary school education and were civilly married. Analyzing the BMI, 57.9% were normal weight and 21.05% were overweight. More than 80% started smoking during adolescence and 68% reported not living with smokers at home. In relation to therapeutic adherence, about 52% were satisfactory. Conclusion: In general, it is observed that the study population has a high rate of nicotine dependence due to the prolonged time of use, the early onset and a late search for treatment.

En cuanto al rango de edad, el 42,11% tenía entre 46 y 55 años y la mayoría de los participantes no había completado los estudios primarios y estaban casados por lo civil. Analizando el IMC, el 57,9% tenían un peso normal y el 21,05% tenían sobrepeso. Más del 80% iniciaron la adicción en la adolescencia y el68% declararon no convivir con fumadores en casa. En cuanto a la adherencia terapéutica, cerca del 52% fue satisfactoria. Conclusión: En general se observa que la población de estudio, presenta una alta tasa de dependencia nicotínica debido al tiempo prolongado de consumo, inicio precoz y demanda tardía de tratamiento.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze, through the morphometric method, the perimeter and length of the tongue, the collagen fibers, and the perimeter of blood vessels at different gestational ages and fetal weights. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Tongues (n=55) of stillborns autopsied at 23-40 weeks of gestational age were macroscopically analyzed, and their length and perimeter were measured. Fifty-five tongue fragments were collected through a longitudinal section in the region that accompanies the median lingual sulcus and histologically processed. Slides were stained with picrosirius and immunolabeled with CD31 antibody. Quantification was performed on collagen fibers under polarized light, and on the perimeter of vessels with the CD31. RESULTS: A positive and significant correlation of gestational age with tongue perimeter and length was found. There was a positive and significant correlation between collagen fibers and gestational age, as well as between gestational age and the perimeter of blood vessels. Between collagen fibers and fetal weight, a positive and significant increase was observed. Regarding the correlation between the perimeter of blood vessels and the fetal weight, an increase was observed. CONCLUSION: As gestational age advances, there is an increase in tongue perimeter and length, in the percentage of collagen fibers, and in vascular perimeter, demonstrating that tongue formation is directly related to tongue growth and development.
