RESUMO
The results from a study on serum interferon in newborns and their mothers are described. The newborns infants receive serum interferon transplacentally in a relative part of the examined cases. Coincidence in the levels of interferon in newborns and their mothers is found in 50% of the cases. Intrauterine synthesized interferon (5.8%) with considerable concentration is also established, due probably to ascendant virus infection.

The interferon reaction of leucocytes (IRL) in the newborns and their mothers were examined in vitro. The ability of leucocytes, obtained from the blood of the umbilical cord of newborns, to synthesize interferon was established in 48.78% of the investigated newborns while in their mothers the relative part was 70.73%. The mean geometrical titre of the leucocytic interferon was lower than that of the parturients (30.90-1.02 against 41.69-1.70).

Five hundred and five operations for intracranial meningiomas were complicated by 18 postoperative hematomas (POH)--3.56%. The POH were more frequently encountered in older patients and/or patients with atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension and diabetes. Longer lasting operations especially cases with intraoperative fall of blood pressure were more often complicated by POH. The POH were more frequently observed following total excision than partial removal and after convexity meningioma operations than other locations. The outcome of the operations complicated by POH was related to the time of their clinical manifestation and removal.

A 20-year-old pregnant woman (8th month of gestation) developed signs of intracranial hypertension and coordination disorders. The CT examination demonstrated hydrocephalus, occlusion of the IV ventricle and hyperdense mass lesion in the right cerebellar hemisphere. Following ventricular drainage cesarean section was performed and then total removal of cerebellar hemangioblastoma, which resulted in rapid and complete reversal of neurological abnormalities of the mother and the child.

The presence of complement fixing antibodies to four viruses with oncogenic potential for animals was studied in children (including neonates and infants). Antibodies to herpes, adenovirus and avian "gs" sarcoma-leukosis antigens were detected, but there were no antibodies to SV-40. Positivity percentages varied with age and with the antigen used. Possible explanations of the appearance of these antibodies in the child are provided.
