RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preprint manuscripts, rapid publications and opinion pieces have been essential in permitting the lay press and public health authorities to preview data relating to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), including the range of clinical manifestations and the basic epidemiology early on in the pandemic. However, the rapid dissemination of information has highlighted some issues with communication of scientific results and opinions in this time of heightened sensitivity and global concern. MAIN TEXT: Rapid publication of COVID-19 literature through expedited review, preprint publications and opinion pieces are important resources for the medical scientific community. Yet the risks of unverified information loom large in times when the healthcare community is desperate for information. Information that has not been properly vetted, or opinion pieces without solid evidence, may be used to influence public health policy decisions. We discuss three examples of unverified information and the consequences in this time of high anxiety surrounding COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: In an era when information can be widely and swiftly disseminated, it is important to ensure that the scientific community is not an inadvertent source of misinformation. This will require a multimodal approach, with buy-in from editors, publishers, preprint servers, authors and journalists. The landscape of medical publications has changed, and a collaborative approach is required to maintain a high standard of scientific communications.

RESUMO

The influence of 2-methyl-6-ethyl-3-hydroxypiridine hemisuccinate on the morphological state of rat brain tissue after the occlusion of left middle cerebral artery has been studied. It was found that 6- and 12-day treatment with 2-methyl-6-ethyl-3-hydroxypyridine hemisuccinate at a dose of 100 mg/kg (intraperitoneal) led to regenerative processes in ischemic brain tissue. The latter treatment duration was most effective.

RESUMO

The effect of 5-hydroxyadamantane-2-one was studied on morphological state of brain tissue of rats after the occlusion of left middle cerebral artery. It was shown that intraperitoneal administration of 5-hydroxyadamantane-2-on at dose 100mg/kg, in 30 minutes after occlusion and once daily for the following 6 and 12 days leads to significant regenerative processes in brain tissue. These processes were more profound after the 12-day treatment with 5-hydroxyadamanta-ne-2-one.

RESUMO

Hospital-acquired infections are on the rise and are a substantial cause of clinical and financial burden for healthcare systems. While infection control plays a major role in curtailing the spread of outbreak organisms, it is not always successful. One organism of particular concern is Acinetobacter baumannii, due to both its persistence in the hospital setting and its ability to acquire antibiotic resistance. A. baumannii has emerged as a nosocomial pathogen that exhibits high levels of resistance to antibiotics, and remains resilient against traditional cleaning measures with resistance to Colistin increasingly reported. Given the magnitude and costs associated with hospital acquired infections, and the increase in multidrug-resistant organisms, it is worth re-evaluating our current approaches and looking for alternatives or adjuncts to traditional antibiotics therapies. The aims of this review are to look at how this organism is spread within the hospital setting, discuss current treatment modalities, and propose alternative methods of outbreak management.

RESUMO

The efficacy of multimodality conservative treatment for prostate and bladder cancer and cervical carcinoma was improved due to integration of such modem modalities as intra-arterial chemotherapy, local hyperthermia and hyperglycemia and combination of local and systemic radiomodifiers. Our methods use criteria of actual survival and are intended to raise it.

RESUMO

A "stone in the pond" strategy is a practical approach to investigating large-scale nosocomial tuberculosis (TB) exposures. Here, we describe such a risk-stratified approach to contact tracing after a TB exposure that occurred over 5 months in a pediatric inpatient ward in a country with a moderate TB burden. RESUMO

The value of sonography in acute trauma evaluation is generally underestimated, and the opinions are controversial. Sonography was performed as a primary screening procedure in 400 of 750 mass casualty patients with trauma admitted to a large hospital within the first 72 hours after the 1988 Armenian earthquake. Two real-time sector scanners were used in the reception area of the hospital, and the average time spent on one patient was 4 minutes. More than 130 followup sonographic examinations were required. Trauma-associated pathology of the abdomen and retroperitoneal space was detected in 12.8% of the patients, with 1% false negatives and no false positives. The authors believe that sonographic screening of mass casualties is a quick and effective means for detection of abdominal and retroperitoneal injuries. Sonography should be used for this purpose more routinely to gain experience and maintain preparedness of the sonographers for screening of trauma cases in mass casualty situations.
