INTRODUCTION: The intrusion of posterior teeth had been considered challenging up to the development of orthodontic mini implants. In periodontally compromised teeth, the challenge is even greater, because of the root resorption risk due to periodontal ligament over-compression. Still, the precise strategy to determine the force reduction level remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine, by a finite element analysis (FEA), the force reduction needed to avoid root resorption and maintain the efficiency of orthodontic mechanics of periodontally compromised teeth similar to the sound one. METHODS: An anatomical model was constructed representing a premolar inserted into a maxillary bone. Based on the initial model (R0), three bone height loss conditions were simulated (R2 = 2 mm, R4 = 4 mm, and R6 = 6 mm). Two intrusive movements were simulated: pure intrusion (bilateral mini implant) and uncontrolled-tipping intrusion (buccal mini implant). The hydrostatic stress at the periodontal ligament was used to evaluate the risk of root resorption due to over-compression. RESULTS: For bilateral mini implant intrusion, the force had to be decreased by 16%, 32% and 48% for R2, R4 and R6, respectively. For buccal mini implant intrusion, the required reductions were higher (20%, 36% and 56%). A linear relationship between the intrusive force reduction and the alveolar bone height loss was observed in both intrusion mechanics. CONCLUSIONS: According to the FE results, 8% or 9.3% of force reduction for each millimetre of bone height loss is suggested for intrusion with bilateral or buccal mini implant, respectively. The buccal mini implant anchorage must be associated with a supplemental strategy to avoid buccal crown tipping.

This study aims to analyse the evolution of match running performance in relation to the age distribution of professional soccer players using a large-scale analysis. An explorational-longitudinal and retrospective study was designed and a total of 36,883 individual match observations were collected on outfield players competing across four consecutive Spanish LaLiga seasons (from 2015/16 to 2018/19), using an optical tracking system (ChyronHego). Soccer players were divided into 3 age groups: young (18-24 years old), middle-aged (25-30 years old), and seniors (31-41 years old). Relative total distance (TD/min), distance covered at 21-24 km · h-1 (HIRD/min), and > 24 km · h-1 per minute (VHIRD/min) were analysed; also, the number of efforts at 21-24 km · h-1 (Sp21) and > 24 km · h-1 (Sp24) were taken into consideration. Seasons were divided into four phases (P): P1 (matches 1-10), P2 (11-19), P3 (20-29), and P4 (30-38). The results showed that young players covered significantly greater TD, HIRD and VHIRD than the rest of the players (p < .05) in all season phases. In addition, TD significantly decreased along season phases in all player age group (p < .01). Crucially, young players performed significantly greater numbers of Sp21 and Sp24 than the rest of the players (p < .05) in all season phases. In addition, Sp21 and SP24 significantly decreased in middle-aged (p < .01) and senior players (p < .05) across the seasons. This study demonstrated that players' match running performance decreases with increasing years, especially in high-intensity running distances.

Sanz, A, Pablos, C, Ballester, R, Sanchez-Alarcos, JV, and Huertas, F. Range of motion and injury occurrence in elite Spanish soccer academies. Not only a hamstring shortening-related problem. J Strength Cond Res 34(7): 1924-1932, 2020-Age-related development of range of motion (ROM) during an active hip flexion (active straight leg raise) and its relationship with hamstring injury occurrence were examined in 1657 young male soccer players (9-18 years of age). Age-related differences in ROM showed a significant decrease from U9 to U11 (p = 0.001), from U11 to U13 (p < 0.005), and from U9 to U13 (p < 0.001), whereas ROM increased from U13 to U15 and from U13 to U18 (both p's < 0.001). Interestingly, younger and older players reached similar ROM values (U9-U18, p = 0.87). Higher ROM was found in dominant than nondominant leg in all age groups (all ps < 0.001). No differences related to playing position were found on ROM (all ps > 0.478). During the follow-up period (11 months) 97 hamstring injuries were reported showing higher rates in the older age groups (p < 0.001) and outfield players (p < 0.001). Remarkably, no differences in ROM average were found between injured players and noninjured players (p = 0.152). Our results suggest that ROM during hip flexion does not only depend on the hamstrings shortening but also on the variables related to joint stability, motor control, and hip flexor muscle weakness. Sport scientists in youth sport soccer academies should develop age-specific screening and action plans to develop strength, motor control, and flexibility to optimize ROM and reduce injuries from the grassroots stages.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Analysis of the wear coefficient (k) of the superficial and deep layers of acrylic resin teeth can help predict denture durability, but little has been published on the wear coefficient of denture teeth. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the k value for the superficial and deep layers of the acrylic resin teeth of 6 different brands by using the fixed-ball microabrasive wear method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six artificial tooth specimens of 4 commercial brands were tested: Artiplus IPN (Ar), Biotone IPN (Bi), Magister (Ma), Premium (Pr), Trilux (Tr), and SR Vivodent (Vi). Two specimens from each brand were created, one for the superficial layer and the other for the deep layer. The test was performed on fixed-ball microabrasive wear equipment set to operate at a constant normal force of 0.5 N and a rotation speed of 100 rpm. The test time periods were 5.00, 8.33, and 11.66 minutes. The characteristics of the wear craters were measured by using an optical microscope at a magnification of ×50 and Leica Microsystems software. Wear coefficient (k) values were deduced by using the Archard equation for abrasive wear, Q=k·N, and were analyzed by using 1-way analysis of variance, complemented by the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). A different analysis was used for each layer. RESULTS: The analysis of variance of the wear coefficient revealed significant differences among the groups regarding the superficial layers (P=.009). The Tukey HSD test showed that the k values for the superficial layers of Artiplus specimens were significantly lower than those of the Vivodent and Magister specimens. CONCLUSIONS: One brand (Ar) presented significantly lower wear coefficient value for the surface layer. No difference in wear coefficient values was found among the tooth brands for the deep layer.

BACKGROUND: The theory of planned behavior (TPB), socio-cognitive model (SCM), and information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model are effective in predicting condom use. However, the adequacy of these three theoretical models in predicting the frequency of condom use (FCU) among young people has not been compared. This cross-sectional study tested the applicability and suitability of these three models in predicting the FCU, and analyzed the relationships among the postulated constructs. METHODS: Sexually experienced adolescents (n = 410) aged 13-18 completed a survey assessing the TPB, SCM, and IMB model constructs. Participants were students recruited from 18 high schools, randomly selected from the north, south, east, and southeast of Spain. A structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis was applied to test TPB, SCM and IBM and constructs relationships of each model using R. RESULTS: The results of SEM demonstrated that behavioral skills predict behavior via motivation as hypothesized by the IMB model, but not directly via knowledge about condom use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Cognitive factors, such knowledge about condom use and STIs as well as condom use self-efficacy, directly predicted the FCU when modeled as per the SCM. According to the TPB, condom use intention was the best predictor of the FCU, and condom use intention was predicted by attitudes toward condom use and subjective norms related to condom use, but perceived control was not directly or indirectly related to the FCU. Based on the data, the TPB becomes the best-fit model for predicting the FCU among young people compared to the SCM and IMB model. CONCLUSIONS: From a statistical perspective, the TPB seems to be the most suitable model for predicting the FCU among young people compared to the other models. Overall, key direct predictors of the FCU in adolescents included condom use intention, behavioral skills and cognitive factors, such as STIs knowledge and condom use self-efficacy. The next step should be to test integrative models that include personal, contextual, environmental, and social factors.

This study sought to compare the shrinkage of 3 resin composites after polymerization, using different curing modes and 2 methods of analysis, with 45 samples in each group. To evaluate free linear shrinkage, specimens were prepared in Teflon molds (8 mm diameter x 2 mm thick) with 1 of 2 methacrylate-based resins or a silorane-based resin. To evaluate wall-to-wall shrinkage, cavities (1.5 mm thick x 3 mm diameter) were prepared in 45 healthy bovine incisors and then restored. In both tests, the same curing lights were used: conventional quartz-tungsten-halogen, a conventional light-emitting diode (LED), and an exponential LED. Gaps were measured microscopically, and the gap percentage was calculated. The results were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Curing modes differed significantly in the free linear shrinkage test group, while resin composites did not. In the wall-to-wall shrinkage group, there were significant differences between the resin composites.

This study compared nanofilled and microhybrid composites polymerized by different light polymerization modes, and the effects these modes had on the mechanical properties of the composites. The following mechanical properties were measured: Vickers microhardness numbers, diametral tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus. The filler content (Wt%) present in the resins was investigated. Data were treated statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test (P ≤ 0.05) and the interaction of the inorganic content with the mechanical properties was analyzed by Pearson's correlation (P ≤ 0.05). The nanofilled material showed a higher percentage of inorganic filler and better mechanical properties when compared to the microhybrid composite. The correlation of Wt% with the tested properties was positive for all but the flexural strength test. Different light polymerization modes were shown not to have a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the composites in this study.

This study aimed at investigating (1) the cognitive and motor predictors of divergent movement ability (DMA) in childhood and (2) the role of sport and enriched physical education (PE) experience. Participants were 165 fifth graders, aged 10-11 years, with different histories (onset and duration) of participation in enriched PE. They were assessed in cognitive/attentional and motor/sport skills and active play/sport habits at baseline, and six months later in DMA. Results of regression analyses showed an overall prediction of DMA by sport practice and a nuanced prediction of individual DMA indices (fluency, flexibility, originality) by decision making and spatial attention ability. Linear mixed models revealed better DMA in children exposed to enriched PE, with differential effects on DMA indices depending on its duration and earlier/later onset. The results identify novel cognitive determinants of children's DMA and suggest that sport practice and experience of designed enrichment in PE may benefit DMA.

This study aimed to explore the relevance of the relative age effect (RAE), maturity status and anthropometry, and their influence on coaches' assessment of players' performance, analyzing both genders and different types of academies (elite vs. non-elite). The sample included 603 soccer players (385 male), from the under 12 (U12), under 14 (U14) and under 16 (U16) categories, belonging to elite and nonelite teams. Coaches' assessment of players' performance, chronological age, anthropometric characteristics, maturity offset (MO) and peak height velocity (PHV) were registered. Our results showed that RAE was present in both genders within the elite, but not in the nonelite academies. Early maturity players were overrepresented in the male elite, but not in the female academies. No relationship was found between RAE and anthropometry in male elite academies. Male elite players showed better anthropometric characteristics than nonelite players, while this pattern of results was not found for female players. The coaches' assessment on players' current performance was not influenced by the chronological age nor anthropometry, but it was linked to the PHV. Coaches from nonelite academies rated better in current assessment of performance the taller players. Our findings suggest that maturity status and RAE play an independent and important role in the talent selection process.

Femoral neck fractures are a massive personal and health programme burden. Methods to study femoral neck strength, across its combined trabecular and cortical components are therefore essential. Rodent ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis models are commonly coupled with ex vivo 3-/4-point bending methods to measure changes in femoral cortical diaphysis. The loading direction used to assess these properties are often non-physiologic and, moreover, these ovariectomy models are linked to marked weight gain that can influence the biomechanical properties. Herein, we explore whether more physiological axial ex vivo loading protocols applied to femoral neck samples of ovariectomised (OVX) rodents provide anatomically-relevant models for the assessment of strength. We examine the use of mouse and rat femurs, loaded in constrained and unconstrained configuration, respectively, and explore whether weight-correction increases their utility. Accordingly, the mid-shaft of the proximal half of femurs from OVX and sham-operated (Sham) mice was methacrylate-anchored and the head loaded parallel to the diaphysis (constrained). Alternatively, femurs from OVX and Sham rats were isolated intact and axially-loaded through hip and knee joint articular surfaces (unconstrained). Yield displacement, stiffness, maximum load and resilience were measured and fracture pattern classified; effects of body weight-correction via a linear regression method or simple division were assessed. Our data reveal significant deficiencies in biomechanical properties in OVX mouse femurs loaded in constrained configuration, only after weight-correction by linear regression. In addition, evaluation of rat femur biomechanics in unconstrained loading demonstrated greater variation and that weight-correction by simple division improved scope to reveal significant OVX impact. We conclude that greater femoral neck fracture susceptibility can indeed be measured in OVX rodents as long as multiple biomechanical parameters are reported, care is taken in choosing the method for assessing load-bearing strength and weight-correction applied. These studies advance the establishment of more relevant rodent models for the study of femoral neck fracture.

Statement of the problem: Narrow implants have been recommended in high esthetic demand regions to ensure greater buccal bone thickness (BBT) and minimize soft-tissue recession due to insufficient bone support. However, a limited area of bone-implant interface can increase the risk of peri-implant bone resorption due to occlusal forces. Purpose: This article encourages the use of evidence-based finite element analysis to optimize the aesthetic outcomes in maxillary lateral incisor single-supported implant crown by accurate biomechanical planning. This study aimed to analyze the best implant dimensions that would preserve the maximum BBT and avoid peri-implant bone resorption due to occlusal forces. Materials and methods: A maxilla segment was constructed based on anthropological measurements. Four implant diameters (Ø = 3.25; 3.50; 3.75 or 4.00 mm) and two lengths (L = 10 or 13 mm) were simulated. The occlusal force parameters were defined to simulate clinical conditions. The bone resorption risk analysis was based on Frost's mechanostat theory altering the strain output to strain energy density (SED). The peri-implant bone resorption risk indexes (PIBRri) were calculated by dividing the average of the top ten SED elements of the cortical and trabecular buccal wall by the pathologic resorption limit for each bone. Results: For trabecular bone, only the model Ø4.00L13 exhibited a low PIBRri. For cortical bone, all models presented a low PIBRri, except for models Ø3.25. Conclusion: The selection of a 3.25 mm dental implant to preserve a 2 mm BBT should be avoided since it generates a high peri-implant bone resorption risk induced by occlusal overload.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the risk of orthodontic mini-implant (OMI) failure between maxilla and mandible. A critical analysis of finite-element studies was used to explain the contradiction of the greatest clinical success for OMIs placed in the maxilla, despite the higher quality bone of mandible. Materials and Methods: Four tridimensional FE models were built, simulating an OMI inserted in a low-dense maxilla, control maxilla, control mandible, and high-dense mandible. A horizontal force was applied to simulate an anterior retraction of 2 N (clinical scenario) and 10 N (overloading condition). The intra-bone OMI displacement and the major principal bone strains were used to evaluate the risk of failure due to insufficient primary stability or peri-implant bone resorption. Results: The OMI displacement was far below the 50-100 µm threshold, suggesting that the primary stability would be sufficient in all models. However, the maxilla was more prone to lose its stability due to overload conditions, especially in the low-dense condition, in which major principal bone strains surpassed the pathologic bone resorption threshold of 3000 µstrain. Conclusions: The differences in orthodontic mini-implant failures cannot be explained by maxilla and mandible bone quality in finite-element analysis that does not incorporate the residual stress due to OMI insertion.

The main purpose of this study was to explore the association between the regular practice of open-skill sports (i.e., soccer) and executive control, along with other attentional functions (i.e., alerting and orienting) during preadolescence. The study was conducted on 131 participants (70 non-athletes and 61 soccer players). To measure cognitive performance, participants performed the Attentional Network Test-Interactions (ANT-I) task. Compared to non-athletes, soccer players showed overall faster responses and better executive control (e.g., reduced interference from distractors). Overall, our results provide new empirical evidence supporting the positive association between regular sports practice and cognitive performance, and more specifically executive functions. However, is important to note that the relationship between regular sport practice and cognition is complex and multifactorial. Our findings can be partly explained by the "cardiovascular fitness hypothesis" and the "cognitive component skills approach," suggesting that an externally paced sport environment with high physical fitness and perceptual-cognitive demands may be an appropriate setting to optimize the development of cognitive functioning during early adolescence.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic aligners use have increased in dentistry. The resolution of complex movements such as extrusion demands the use of attachments to reach the aimed force, but just a few studies have been developed to evaluate the biomechanical performance of the aligners and their accessories. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate on the three axes (X, Y and Z) the forces generated by three different attachment designs for the extrusion of the maxillary central incisor using esthetic orthodontic aligners. METHODS: Three prototypes of maxillary models were developed, each one with a specific attachment inserted in the central incisor. Three aligners were manufactured for each of the three attachment designs, with 0.33-mm activation in the direction of the extrusion. An analytical device was used to evaluate the forces applied to the three axes by each aligner/attachment. The data were assessed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: All of the studied attachment designs could satisfactorily perform the extrusion movement. However, force intensities were different in the three designs (design 1 = 2.5 N; design 2 = 2.2 N, and design 3 = 1.1 N). Furthermore, two of the three attachment designs (designs 1 and 2) eventually exerted significant forces on the X (mesiodistal) and Y (buccopalatal) axes. CONCLUSION: The attachment design 3 presents the best distribution of forces for extrusion movement, generating almost null forces on X and Y axes, and lower intensity of force on the Z axis.

This investigation aims to explore the relationship between the academic backgrounds of youth soccer coaches (U10 and U12 age groups) in Spain and the type of verbal behavior used during training sessions. The sample consisted of 70 coaches divided into two groups, depending on whether or not they had engaged with a university-level academic studies related to Physical Education and or Sport Sciences. A modified version of the "Coach Analysis and Intervention System" (CAIS), developed by Cushion et al. (2012), was used to collect data. A total of 32,886 verbal behaviors were noted and analyzed. Our results suggest that the coaches with university academic backgrounds frequently use more verbal behaviors and that these could be associated with positive effects on the players' learning and development processes. We suggest it is important to develop specific training programs aimed at optimizing the coaches' communicative and socio-affective skills in order to maximize their impact in youth athletes' learning process.

AIMS: The processes linking long-term bisphosphonate treatment to atypical fracture remain elusive. To establish a means of exploring this link, we have examined how long-term bisphosphonate treatment with prior ovariectomy modifies femur fracture behaviour and tibia mass and shape in murine bones. METHODS: Three groups (seven per group) of 12-week-old mice were: 1) ovariectomized and 20 weeks thereafter treated weekly for 24 weeks with 100 µm/kg subcutaneous ibandronate (OVX+IBN); 2) ovariectomized (OVX); or 3) sham-operated (SHAM). Quantitative fracture analysis generated biomechanical properties for the femoral neck. Tibiae were microCT scanned and trabecular (proximal metaphysis) and cortical parameters along almost its whole length measured. RESULTS: Fracture analyses revealed that OVX+IBN significantly reduced yield displacement (vs SHAM/OVX) and resilience, and increased stiffness (vs SHAM). OVX+IBN elevated tibial trabecular parameters and also increased cortical cross-sectional area and second moment of area around minor axis, and diminished ellipticity proximally. OBJECTIVE: To establish a simplified method for measuring the edge bevel radius of 0.019×0.025-in steel rectangular orthodontic wires, achievable in the clinical environment, and to compare it with the photographic method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Aided by the AutoCAD™ 2016 software, the theoretical mathematical relationship was determined between the edge rounding radius and cross-sectional dimensions (height, width, diagonals), through rectangle drawings that represent cross-sections. Two hundred segments (n=20) were obtained from the posterior portions of 100 archwires from 10 brands (Dentaurum™; American-Orthodontics™; GAC™; 3M-Unitek™; Abzil™; Morelli™; Orthometric™; Aditek™; A-Company™; Orthomundi™). The cross-sectional measures of each segment were obtained with a micrometer and a caliper, and the edge bevel radii of these segments were calculated with the use of a mathematical formula. For the "gold standard", the segments were included longitudinally in a phenolic resin cylinder, cross-sectioned, polished, and photographed in scanning electron microscope (SEM). The images were amplified 770× and the radii were measured with an acetate template. The micrometer and caliper measuring methods were subjected to Bland-Altman analysis and compared with the gold standard (SEM), considering ±10µm as the maximum acceptable difference between methods. RESULTS: In the micrometre measurement, 95% of the differences from the standard were within the limits of agreement (-7.21 and 5.56µm). For the caliper method, 95% of the differences were between -5.46 and 19.83µm, which exceeded the fixed limit ±10µm. CONCLUSION: The calculation method with micrometre measurements is equivalent to the photographic method, but there is no such equivalence for the caliper measurements.

Basic dosimetric studies are necessary to support the use of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), since the great variety of laser parameters that are reported in the literature have created an obstacle to identifying reproducible results. Thus, the present study evaluates the process of tissue repair after the photobiomodulation therapy, taking into consideration the dose, frequency and the mode of energy delivery used. For this, 6 mm diameter wounds were created on dorsal skin of Wistar rats, and the animals were divided in control and irradiated groups, where L1 and L4 (irradiated with 1 point of 10 J/cm2), L2 and L5 (5 points of 10 J/cm2), L3 and L6 (1 point of 50 J/cm2), respectively for one or multiple days of irradiations. A diode laser, λ 660 nm, 40 mW of power and 0.028 cm2 of spot area was used. Our data showed that the group receiving multiple treatments over the first week post wounding, applied at 10 J/cm2 at each of 5 points on and around the wound (group L5) presented the best improvement of wound closure, higher cytokeratin 10, lower macrophage infiltration, and greater tissue resistance to rupture. We conclude that PBMT improves the skin wound healing process, and the outcomes were directly related to the chosen laser parameters and irradiation mode.

This study evaluated the influence of adhesive layer thickness (ADL) on the resin-dentin bond strength of two adhesive systems (AS) after thermal and mechanical loading (TML). A flat superficial dentin surface was exposed with 600-grit SiC paper on 40 molars. After primer application, the adhesive layer of Scotchbond Multipurpose (SBMP) or Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB) was applied in one or two layers to a delimited area (52 mm2) and resin blocks (Filtek Z250) were built incrementally. Half of the sample was stored in distilled water (37 degrees C, 24 hours) and submitted to thermal (1,000; 5 degrees -55 degrees C) and mechanical cycles (500,000; 10kgf) [TML]. The other half was stored in distilled water (72 hours). The teeth were then sectioned to obtain sticks (0.8 mm2) to be tested under tensile mode (1.0 mm/minute). The fracture mode was analyzed at 400x. The BS from all sticks from the same tooth was averaged for statistical purposes. The data was analyzed by three-way ANOVA. The chi2 test was used (p < 0.05) to compare the frequency of pre-testing failure specimens. Higher BS values were observed for SBMP regardless of the ADL. The TML reduced the BS values irrespective of the adhesive employed and the ADL. A higher frequency of pre-testing failure specimens was observed for the cycled groups. A thicker adhesive layer, acting as an intermediate flexible layer, did not minimize the damage caused by thermal/mechanical load cycling for a three-step etch-and-rinse and two-step self-etch system.

The definition of an optimal elastic modulus for a post is controversial. This work hypothesized that the influence of the posts' elastic modulus on dentin stress concentration is dependent on the load direction. The objective was to evaluate, using finite element analysis, the maximum principal stress (sigma(max)) on the root, using posts with different elastic modulus submitted to different loading directions. Nine 3D models were built, representing the dentin root, gutta-percha, a conical post and the cortical bone. The softwares used were: MSC.PATRAN2005r2 (preprocessing) and MSC.Marc2005r2 (processing). Load of 100 N was applied, varying the directions (0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees) in relation to the post's long axis. The magnitude and direction of the sigma(max) were recorded. At the 45 degrees and 90 degrees loading, the highest values of sigma(max) were recorded for the lowest modulus posts, on the cervical region, with a direction that suggests debonding of the post. For the 0 degrees loading, the highest values of sigma(max) were recorded for higher modulus posts, on the apical region, and the circumferential direction suggests vertical root fracture. The hypothesis was accepted: the effect of the elastic modulus on the magnitude and direction of the sigma(max) generated on the root was dependent on the loading direction.
