BACKGROUND: Hot flashes are a common side effect of endocrine therapy (ET) that contribute to poor quality of life and decreased treatment adherence. METHODS: Patients with breast cancer wo were receiving ET and experiencing hot flashes were enrolled through three parallel, randomized trials conducted in the United States, China, and South Korea. Participants were randomized to either immediate acupuncture (IA) or delayed acupuncture control (DAC). IA participants received 20 acupuncture sessions over 10 weeks, whereas DAC participants received usual care, then crossed over to acupuncture with a reduced intensity. The primary end point was a change in score on the endocrine symptom subscale of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT)-Endocrine Symptoms between baseline and week 10. Secondary end points included the hot flash score and the FACT-Breast score. A planned pooled analysis of individual patient data was performed using longitudinal mixed models. RESULTS: In total, 158 women with stage 0-III breast cancer were randomized (United States, n = 78; China, n = 40; South Korea, n = 40). At week 10, IA participants reported statistically significant improvements in the endocrine symptom subscale score (mean change ± standard error: 5.1 ± 0.9 vs. 0.2 ± 1.0; p = .0003), the hot flash score (-5.3 ± 0.9 vs. -1.4 ± 0.9; p < .003), and the FACT-Breast total score (8.0 ± 1.6 vs. -0.01 ± 1.6; p = .0005) compared with DAC participants. The effect of the acupuncture intervention differed by site (p = .005). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture led to statistically and clinically meaningful improvements in hot flashes, endocrine symptoms, and breast cancer-specific quality of life in women undergoing ET for breast cancer in the United States, China, and South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common T cell-mediated oral mucosal immune inflammatory disease. Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) are a unique subset of T cells that play an important role in regulating immune response. This study aims to investigate the phenotype and the differentiation mechanism of IELs in OLP. METHODS: The expression of CD4, CD8α, CD8ß, T-helper-inducing POZ/Krueppel-like factor (ThPOK), and RUNX family transcription factor 3 (Runx3) in the epithelium and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of OLP was determined by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry. Then, the correlations among them were analyzed. Naïve CD4+ T cells were sorted from blood of OLP patients and stimulated with retinoic acid (RA) and transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1). Then the expression of CD4, CD8α, CD8ß, ThPOK, and Runx3 was investigated by immunocytochemistry. RESULTS: CD8α expression and CD8αα+ cells were upregulated in the epithelium of OLP, whereas they were downregulated in PBMCs of OLP. CD8ß was not expressed in the epithelium of OLP. CD4, CD8α, and Runx3 expression and CD4+CD8α+ cells were increased, whereas ThPOK expression was decreased in the epithelium of OLP. CD8α expression was positively correlated with Runx3 expression, whereas ThPOK expression was negatively correlated with Runx3 expression. After RA and TGF-ß1 stimulation, CD8α and Runx3 expression was upregulated, and ThPOK expression was downregulated in naïve CD4+ T cells. CONCLUSION: CD4+CD8αα+ IELs may be the dominant phenotype of IELs in OLP, and the differentiation of CD4+CD8αα+ IELs in OLP is negatively regulated by ThPOK and positively regulated by Runx3.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a catastrophic complication following joint replacement surgery. One potential treatment approach for PJI could be the combination of one-stage revision and intra-articular infusion of antibiotics. Meropenem is one of the commonly used intra-articular antibiotics in our institution. Determining the concentration of meropenem in the joint cavity could be crucial for optimizing its local application, effectively eradicating biofilm infection, and improving PJI treatment outcomes. In this study, we developed a simple, precise, and accurate method of two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) for determining the concentration of meropenem in human synovial fluid. The method was then validated based on the guidelines of the Food and Drug Administration and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Meropenem showed good linearity in the range of 0.31-25.01 µg/mL (r ≥ .999). Selectivity, intra-day and inter-day precision and accuracy, extraction recovery, and stability validation results were all within the acceptance range. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of synovial fluid samples from PJI patients, providing a useful detection method for meropenem therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) in PJI patients.

Fibrosis is caused by extensive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, which play a crucial role in injury repair. Fibrosis attributes to ~45% of all deaths worldwide. The molecular pathology of different fibrotic diseases varies, and a number of bioactive factors are involved in the pathogenic process. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cells that have promising therapeutic effects in the treatment of different diseases. Current updates of fibrotic pathogenesis reveal that residential MSCs may differentiate into myofibroblasts which lead to the fibrosis development. However, preclinical and clinical trials with autologous or allogeneic MSCs infusion demonstrate that MSCs can relieve the fibrotic diseases by modulating inflammation, regenerating damaged tissues, remodeling the ECMs, and modulating the death of stressed cells after implantation. A variety of animal models were developed to study the mechanisms behind different fibrotic tissues and test the preclinical efficacy of MSC therapy in these diseases. Furthermore, MSCs have been used for treating liver cirrhosis and pulmonary fibrosis patients in several clinical trials, leading to satisfactory clinical efficacy without severe adverse events. This review discusses the two opposite roles of residential MSCs and external MSCs in fibrotic diseases, and summarizes the current perspective of therapeutic mechanism of MSCs in fibrosis, through both laboratory study and clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: A few studies have reported phthalate exposure as a risk factor for depressive symptoms, but the results have been inconsistent. Whether chronic inflammation mediates the relationship between phthalates (PAEs) and depressive symptoms remains unclear. In this study, we establish mediating models of inflammatory factors and explore the mediating role of chronic inflammation in the association between PAEs exposure and depressive symptoms. METHODS: The sample included 989 participants from the Study on Health and Environment of the Elderly in Lu'an City, Anhui Province. Geriatric depression scale (GDS-30) was used to screen depressive symptoms of the elderly. The levels of seven kinds of PAEs in urine samples and four inflammatory factors in serum of the elderly were measured. To establish the mediating effect of inflammatory factors to explore the potential effect of PAEs exposure on the increased odds of depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Adjusted for multiple variables, the highest tertiles of Mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) (95%CI = 1.051-2.112), Mono benzyl phthalate (MBzP) (95%CI = 1.016-2.082) and Mono butyl phthalate (MBP) (95%CI = 1.102-2.262) were positively correlated with depressive symptoms. The mediating effect of IL-6 and generalized inflammation factor between MEHP exposure and depressive symptoms were 15.96% (95%CI=0.0288-0.1971) and 14.25% (95%CI = 0.0167-0.1899). CONCLUSIONS: High levels of MEHP, MBzP and MBP increased the odds of depressive symptoms in the elderly, and chronic inflammation had a partial mediating effect on the increased odds of depressive symptoms due to MEHP exposure.

The precise structural solution of crystals on a mesostructural scale is challenging due to the difficulties in obtaining electron diffraction and the complicated relationship between the crystal structure factors (CSFs) and the conventional underfocus phase-contrast transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images due to the large unit cell and the complex structures. Here, we present the structural investigation of mesostructured crystals via the combination of electron crystallographic Fourier synthesis and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) that only relies on the mass-thickness contrast. The three-dimensional electrostatic potential is reconstructed from the amplitudes and phases extracted from the Fourier transforms of the corresponding HAADF-STEM images and merged into a set of CSFs. This method is verified on silica scaffolds following a shifted double-diamond surface network with space group I41/amd. The results indicate that electron crystallography reconstruction by HAADF-STEM images is more suitable and accurate in determining the structure in comparison with conventional TEM electron crystallography reconstruction. This approach transfers the contrast of mesostructured crystals to images more accurately and the relationship between the Fourier transforms of HAADF-STEM images and the CSFs is more intuitive. It shows great advantages for the structural solution of crystals on the mesostructural scale.

A low-cost and scalable method is developed for producing large-area elastomer surfaces having ordered nanostructures with a variety of lattice features controllable to nanometer precision. The method adopts the known technique of molding a PDMS precursor film with a close-packed monolayer of monodisperse submicron polystyrene beads on water to form an inverse-opal dimple lattice with the dimple size controlled by the bead selection and the dimple depth by the molding condition. The subsequent novel precision engineering of the inverse-opal lattice comprises trimming the PDMS precursor by a combination of polymer curing temperature/time and polymer dissolution parameters. The resultant ordered surface nanostructures, fabricated with an increasing degree of trimming, include (a) submicron hemispherical dimples with nanothin interdimple rims and walls; (b) nanocones with variable degrees of tip-sharpness by trimming off the top part of the nanothin interdimple walls; and (c) soup-plate-like submicron shallow dimples with interdimple rims and walls by anisotropically trimming off the nanocones and forming close-packed shallow dimples. As exemplars of industrial relevance of these lattice features, tunable Young's modulus and wettability are demonstrated.

Ganoderma, as a Chinese traditional medicine, has multiple bioactivities. However, industrial production was limited due to low yield during Ganoderma fermentation. In this work, sucrose was found to greatly enhance intracellular polysaccharide (IPS) content and specific extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) production rate. The mechanism was studied by analyzing the activities of enzymes related to polysaccharide biosynthesis. The results revealed that sucrose regulated the activities of phosphoglucomutase and phosphoglucose isomerase. When glucose and sucrose mixture was used as carbon source, biomass, polysaccharide and ganoderic acids (GAs) production was greatly enhanced. A sucrose fed-batch strategy was developed in 10-L bioreactor, and was scaled up to 300-L bioreactor. The biomass, EPS and IPS production was 25.5, 2.9 and 4.8 g/L, respectively, which was the highest biomass and IPS production in pilot scale. This study provides information for further understanding the regulation mechanism of Ganoderma polysaccharide biosynthesis. It demonstrates that sucrose fed-batch is a useful strategy for enhancing Ganoderma biomass, polysaccharide and GAs production.

This article studied the influence of silica (SiO2) particles on the crosslinked network and the molecular mobility of ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubber chains by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). When SiO2 fraction is lower than 8 phr, the chain segments that participate in the glass-rubber transition (α transition) decrease with increasing the SiO2 content, while the whole crosslinked network is almost unaffected by the presence of SiO2. When the SiO2 fraction increases to about 20 phr, there appears a new tan δ peak (α' transition) above the α transition. This could be because the crosslinking reaction took place only on a small scale and the formed network became gradually incomplete when the content of the particles exceeded some critical value, and the α' transition is attributed primarily to the motion of non-elastic network chains loosely attached to the three-dimensional network. However, at SiO2 loadings higher than 40 phr, the crosslinking density was kept basically constant. The α' transition is hindered by a restriction of the chain mobility due to SiO2. The different changes of α' transition depended on the two coupled effects of SiO2, including restricting the chain mobility and decreasing the crosslinking density. Correspondingly, with increasing the mobility of EPDM chains and SiO2-induced strengthening, the mechanical properties of EPDM composite are dramatically improved. With the addition of 20 phr of SiO2 in the EPDM, a 113% increase in the elongation at break, a 510% increase in the fracture energy, and a 283% increase in the tensile strength are achieved.

The study is to explore the effect of total glucosides of paeony (TGP)on Wnt/ß-catenin signal transduction pathway expression in kidney of diabetic rats, and discuss the protection of TGP in diabetic nephropathy and possible mechanism. Ninety male SD rats of 8 weeks age were randomly divided into normal control group (n = 10) and model group (n = 80). Rats of the normal control group were fed with regular diet, while rats of the model group were fed with high-fat high-sugar diet and 4 weeks later were given an intraperitoneal injection of 35 mg x kg(-1) streptozotocin (STZ). The successfully induced type 2 diabetic rat models were then randomly divided into DM group, three TGP (50, 100, 200 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1)) treatment group and tripterygium wilfordii glycosides (8 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1)) control group. Rats of DM group and each treatment group were given high-fat high-sugar diet. At week 14, the levels of blood sugar, 24 hour urine protein, serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen were tested. The rats were then sacrificed. Renal pathological changes were examined. Renal tissue Wnt-1 and ß-catenin expressions were detected by immunohistochemical assay. Wnt-1 mRNA and ß-catenin mRNA expression was semi-quantified by RT-PCR. Wnt-1 protein and ß-catenin protein expression was semi-quantified by Western blot. The Result show that Wnt-1 and ß-catenin expression increased in kidney of high-fat high-sugar induced type 2 diabetic rats. Compared with diabetic group, the level of serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, 24 h urine protein, mean glomerular area and mean glomerular volume were decreased, renal histopathology were improved, expression of Wnt-1 and ß-catenin mRNA and protein was reduced in TGP group. Tripterygium wilfordii glycosides had the similar effect. In conclusion, these results showed that Wnt/ß-catenin abnormal activation in kidney of type 2 diabetic rats, TGP can improve kidney damage in diabetic rats and delay the development of diabetic nephropathy by inhibit the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To campare biomechanical effects of different postural compression techniques on three-dimensional model of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) by finite element analysis. METHODS: Lumbar CT image of a 48-year-old female patient with LDH (heighted 163 cm, weighted 53 kg) was collected. Mimics 20.0, Geomagic Studio, Solidwords and other software were used to establish three-dimensional finite element model of LDH on L4,5 segments. Compression techniques under horizontal position, 30° forward bending and 10° backward extension were simulated respectively. After applying the pressure, the effects of compression techniques under different positions on stress, strain and displacement of various tissues of intervertebral disc and nerve root were observed. RESULTS: L4, 5 segment finite element model was successfully established, and the model was validated. When compression manipulation was performed on the horizontal position, 30° flexion and 10° extension, the annular stress were 0.732, 5.929, 1.286 MPa, the nucleus pulposus stress were 0.190, 1.527, 0.295 MPa, and the annular strain were 0.097, 0.922 and 0.424, the strain sizes of nucleus pulposus were 0.153, 1.222 and 0.282, respectively. The overall displacement distance of intervertebral disc on Y direction were -3.707, -18.990, -4.171 mm, and displacement distance of nerve root on Y direction were +7.836, +5.341, +3.859 mm, respectively. The relative displacement distances of nerve root and intervertebral disc on Y direction were 11.543, 24.331 and 8.030 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION: Compression manipulation could make herniated intervertebral disc produce contraction and retraction trend, by increasing the distance between herniated intervertebral disc and nerve root, to reduce symptoms of nerve compression, to achieve purpose of treatment for patients with LDH, in which the compression manipulation is more effective when the forward flexion is 30°.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) serves as a vital barrier for both national security and ecological preservation. Overpopulation and urban sprawl pose threats to its ecological security, while underpopulation and small urban cities also undermine national security. Hence, optimizing population distribution and urban development on the QTP is crucial for bolstering the national security perimeter and ensuring basic modernisation across China. Nonetheless, understanding the population carrying capacity (CC) of the QTP and how large cities can safeguard both national security and ecological stability remains limited. To address this research gap, we utilised various model algorithms and methodologies to assess the population CC and urban scale of the QTP from seven different perspectives. The results indicate that the permanent population CC of the QTP in 2050 will be 26.2 million people, with an urbanisation level of 57.25 %, thereby allowing 15 million people to enter cities. Thus, the QTP can add 13.07 million people to its permanent population in the future, with a newly added urban population of 8.75 million, increasing the urbanisation level by 9.67 %. The future permanent population will mainly be distributed in the Xining, Lhasa, and Qaidam metropolitan areas. Combined, the permanent and urban populations will account for 38.54 % and 49.84 % of the QTP, respectively. Moreover, these populations will be moderately dispersed in 11 important node cities and more widely dispersed in key border towns. These findings provide a scientific basis for the sustainable development and high-quality urbanisation of the QTP, which have important implications for achieving sustainable development goals, offering crucial references for governments to formulate resource management policies and achieve sustainable resource utilisation.

BACKGROUND: The relation between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is under debate; the management of TMD during orthodontic treatment has always been a challenge. If TMD symptoms occur during orthodontic treatment, an immediate pause of orthodontic adjustments is recommended; the treatment can resume when the symptoms are managed and stabilized. CASE SUMMARY: This case report presents a patient (26-year-old, female) with angle class I, skeletal class II and TMDs. The treatment was a hybrid of clear aligners, fixed appliances and temporary anchorage devices (TADs). After 3 mo resting and treatment on her TMD, the patient's TMD symptom alleviated, but her anterior occlusion displayed deep overbite. Therefore, the fixed appliances with TAD were used to correct the anterior deep-bite and level maxillary and mandibular deep curves. After the levelling, the patient showed dual bite with centric relation and maximum intercuspation discrepancy on her occlusion. After careful examination of temporomandibular joints (TMJ) position, the stable bite splint and Invisible Mandibular Advancement appliance were used to reconstruct her occlusion. Eventually, the improved facial appearance and relatively stable occlusion were achieved. The 1-year follow-up records showed there was no obvious change in TMJ morphology, and her occlusion was stable. CONCLUSION: TMD screening and monitoring is of great clinical importance in the TMD susceptible patients. Hybrid treatment with clear aligners and fixed appliances and TADs is an effective treatment modality for the complex cases.

Acupuncture is a comprehensive therapy which takes the theory of traditional Chinese medicine as the core. Currently, there is much controversy surrounding the "placebo effect" of acupunctureï¼ some people argue that acupuncture is a "super placebo", while others believe that the so-called placebo effect is just part of the therapeutic effect of acupuncture. To solve the controversy, this article clarified the definition, composition, and research purposes of "placebo acupuncture", pointed out its differences from "sham acupuncture", elucidated the relationship between the placebo effect and the intrinsic efficacy of acupuncture, distinguished the differences between the "observed placebo effect" and the "real placebo effect" in acupuncture clinical trials, and proposed the dilemmas and prospects of implementing "placebo acupuncture" and "sham acupuncture" contrasts at the current stage, in order to provide clues for optimizing randomized controlled trials of acupuncture.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is a method for treating tic disorder. However, there is a lack of sufficient clinical objective basis in regards of its treatment efficacy. Indeed, there are structural abnormalities present in energy metabolism and infrared thermography in children with tic disorder. Therefore, this study proposes a clinical trial scheme to explore the possible mechanism of acupuncture in treating tic disorder. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial will recruit a total of 90 children, in which they will be divided into non-intervention group and intervention group. The non-intervention group consists of 30 healthy children while the intervention group consists of 60 children with tic disorder. The intervention group will be randomly allocated into either the treatment group or the control group, with 30 children randomly assigned in each group. Children either received acupuncture treatment and behavioral therapy (treatment group) or sham acupuncture treatment and behavioral therapy (control group), 3 treatment sessions per week for a period of 12 weeks, with a total of 36 treatment sessions. Outcome measures include YGTSS, urinary and fecal metabolomics, infrared thermography of body surface including governor vessel. For the intervention group, these outcome measures will be collected at the baseline and 90th day prior to intervention. Whereas for the non-intervention group, outcome measures (excluding YGTSS) will be collected at the baseline. DISCUSSION: The main outcome will be to observe the changes of the severity of tic condition, the secondary outcome will be to observe the changes of structural characteristic of infrared thermography of body surface/acupoints along the governor vessel and to evaluate the changes of urinary and fecal metabolomics at the end of the treatment, so as to analyze the relationship between them and to provide further knowledge in understanding the possible mechanism of acupuncture in improving the clinical symptoms via regulating and restoring the body metabolomics network, which in future it can develop as a set of clinical guideline (diagnosis, treatment, assessment, prognosis) in treating tic disorder. BACKGROUND: Jianpi Gushen Huayu Decoction (JPGS) has been used to clinically treat diabetic nephropathy (DN) for many years. However, the protective mechanism of JPGS in treating DN remains unclear. AIM: To evaluate the therapeutic effects and the possible mechanism of JPGS on DN. METHODS: We first evaluated the therapeutic potential of JPGS on a DN mouse model. We then investigated the effect of JPGS on the renal metabolite levels of DN mice using non-targeted metabolomics. Furthermore, we examined the effects of JPGS on c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/P38-mediated apoptosis and the inflammatory responses mediated by toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)/NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3). RESULTS: The ameliorative effects of JPGS on DN mice included the alleviation of renal injury and the control of inflammation and oxidative stress. Untargeted metabolomic analysis revealed that JPGS altered the metabolites of the kidneys in DN mice. A total of 51 differential metabolites were screened. Pathway analysis results indicated that nine pathways significantly changed between the control and model groups, while six pathways significantly altered between the model and JPGS groups. Pathways related to cysteine and methionine metabolism; alanine, tryptophan metabolism; aspartate and glutamate metabolism; and riboflavin metabolism were identified as the key pathways through which JPGS affects DN. Further experimental validation showed that JPGS treatment reduced the expression of TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathways and JNK/P38 pathway-mediated apoptosis related factors. CONCLUSION: JPGS could markedly treat mice with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DN, which is possibly related to the regulation of several metabolic pathways found in kidneys. Furthermore, JPGS could improve kidney inflammatory responses and ameliorate kidney injuries in DN mice via the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway and inhibit JNK/P38 pathway-mediated apoptosis in DN mice.

In the recent decades, obesity rates among children and adolescents, especially males, have increased significantly. This worldwide phenomenon is thought to significantly affect the levels of sex hormones. However, the association between waist circumference (a marker of abdominal obesity) and sex hormone levels in children and adolescents is unknown. In this study, 4031 participants aged 6-19 years from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the USA were enrolled in this study. The common confounders of age, race, body mass index, educational level, family income, diabetes, and time of sample collection were also collected. The participants missing any of the above information were excluded from the study. We used multiple linear regression and other multiple statistics to assess the associations between waist circumference and serum testosterone, estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index (FAI), and testosterone/estradiol ratio (T/E2). Waist circumference remained associated with sex hormone levels in children and adolescents after controlling for covariates. As waist circumference increases, testosterone levels in children and adolescents show an overall decline after a brief increase, with the inflection point for waist circumference of 65-66 cm. In addition, waist circumference positively correlates with estradiol levels in male children (ß = 0.007, 95% confidence interval: 0.004-0.009). Moreover, circulating SHBG decreases in children and adolescents as waist circumference increases. In conclusion, this study highlighted waist circumference as a vital indicator affecting sex hormone levels in children and adolescents.

Compared with conventional von Neumann's architecture-based processors, neuromorphic systems provide energy-saving in-memory computing. We present here a 3D neuromorphic humanoid hand designed for providing an artificial unconscious response based on training. The neuromorphic humanoid hand system mimics the reflex arc for a quick response by managing complex spatiotemporal information. A 3D structural humanoid hand is first integrated with 3D-printed pressure sensors and a portable neuromorphic device that was fabricated by the multi-axis robot 3D printing technology. The 3D neuromorphic robot hand provides bioinspired signal perception, including detection, signal transmission, and signal processing, together with the biomimetic reflex arc function, allowing it to hold an unknown object with an automatically increased gripping force without a conventional controlling processor. The proposed system offers a new approach for realizing an unconscious response with an artificially intelligent robot.

A pressure monitoring structure is a very useful element for a wearable device for health monitoring and sports biomechanics. While pressure sensors have been studied extensively, battery-free functions working in wireless detection have not been studied much. Here, we report a 3D-structured origami-based architecture sensor for wireless pressure monitoring. We developed an architectured platform for wireless pressure sensing through inductor-capacitor (LC) sensors and a monopole antenna. A personalized smart insole with Miura-ori origami designs has been 3D printed together with conductive 3D printed sensors seamlessly. Wireless monitoring of resonant frequency and intensity changes of LC sensors have been demonstrated to monitor foot pressure for different postures. The sensitivity of the wireless pressure sensor is tunable from 15.7 to 2.1 MHz/kPa in the pressure ranges from 0 to 9 kPa and from 10 to 40 kPa, respectively. The proposed wireless pressure-sensing platform can be utilized for various applications such as orthotics, prosthetics, and sports gear.

Prenatal DEHP exposure can cause offspring neurodevelopmental toxicity, but the persistent effects of such exposure window are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the lasting neurobehavioral impact of DEHP on offspring following early exposure from GD9.5 (fetal neural tube closure) to GD16.5 (fetal thyroxin, TH, synthesis). Data showed maternal exposure to DEHP during the thyroid hormone-dependent stage induced a range of neurobehavioral phenotypic changes in adult and middle-aged mice, including anxiety, depression and cognitive impairment. Significant reductions in free TH, TH transporters, and TH metabolic enzyme deiodinase II (D2) were observed in the fetal brain, whereas D3 was elevated, indicating that TH signaling disruption was caused by in utero exposure. Gene expression analyses suggested the expression levels of the TH receptors Trα1, Trß1 and their downstream target, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, were significantly attenuated, which may partially explain the mechanisms of neurodevelopmental impairment. This study provides new evidence of the persistent effects of sex-specific neurodevelopmental impairment due to in utero DEHP exposure, possibly through damage to the fetal brain TH signaling systems that causes lifelong brain damage. These results further suggest a profound neurobehavioral toxicity of DEHP that may be programmed during early developmental stage exposure and manifested later in life.
