RESUMO

Drought stress poses a substantial challenge to plant growth and agricultural productivity worldwide. Upon water depletion, plants activate an abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway, leading to stomatal closure to reduce water loss. The MYB family of transcription factors plays diverse roles in growth, development, stress responses and biosynthesis, yet their involvement in stomatal regulation remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that ABA significantly upregulates the expression of MYB41, MYB74, and MYB102, with MYB41 serving as a key regulator that induces the expression of both MYB74 and MYB102. Through luciferase assays, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays and electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA), we reveal that MYB41 engages in positive feedback regulation by binding to its own promoter, thus amplifying its transcription in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Furthermore, our investigation showed that MYB41 recruits BRAHMA (BRM), the core ATPase subunit of the SWI/SNF complex, to the MYB41 promoter, facilitating the binding of HISTONE DEACETYLASE 6 (HDA6). This recruitment triggers epigenetic modifications, resulting in reduced MYB41 expression characterized by elevated H3K27me3 levels and concurrent decreases in H3ac, H3K27ac, and H3K14ac levels in wild-type plants compared to brm knockout mutant plants. Our genetic and molecular analyses show that ABA mediates autoregulation of the MYB41-BRM module, which intricately modulates stomatal movement in A. thaliana. This discovery sheds light on a drought response mechanism with the potential to greatly enhance agricultural productivity.

RESUMO

Respiratory pathogens pose significant challenges to public health, demanding efficient diagnostic methods. This study presents an integrated microfluidic chip for the simultaneous detection of multiple respiratory pathogens. The chip integrates magnetic bead-based nucleic acid extraction and purification, acoustic streaming-driven mixing, liquid equalization, and multiplex PCR amplification with in situ fluorescence detection. Nucleic acid extraction takes only 12 min, yielding results comparable to commercial kits. Efficient mixing of magnetic beads is achieved through a combination of designed micropillars and bubble-trapping array structures. The micropillars maintain the aqueous phase in the mixing chamber, while the bubble-trapping arrays enable stable formation of bubbles, serving as a micromixer under the acoustic field. To prevent cross-contamination, an oil-encapsulated water droplet system is incorporated throughout nucleic acid extraction and PCR amplification. This assay displays remarkable multiplex analysis capability on a single chip, enabling the simultaneous detection of 12 common respiratory pathogens with a low detection limit of 10 copies/µL. Moreover, this method demonstrates excellent practical applicability in clinical nasal samples. Compared to many microfluidic chip-based molecular biology methods, the assay exhibits comparable or superior multipathogen analysis capability, sensitivity, and speed, completing the sample-to-answer process in approximately 70 min. This integrated microfluidic device offers a promising multiplex molecular diagnosis platform for on-site simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the observable distribution of serum uric acid levels in healthy adults residing in China's coastal areas and to assess the suitability of current reference intervals. METHODS: The study incorporated 20,786 participants. The overall uric acid level displayed a skewed distribution, leading to the division of subjects into six groups based on gender and age. The analysis was conducted to comprehend the distribution of UA in various groups and seasons, establish and validate the reference intervals for the surface healthy population in this region, and analyze the abnormality rates using different reference intervals. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were observed between the uric acid levels of males and females across all age groups (ALL p < 0.05). Furthermore, there were statistical differences in uric acid levels among different age groups for both genders (H = 69.593 and 326.348, all p < 0.001). The overall reference interval was determined as 238 - 488 µmol/L for males and 155 - 364 µmol/L for females, based on the 95% confidence interval (P2.5 - P97.5). The established reference intervals, grounded on gender and age group, were validated, showing statistically significant disparities in UA levels among groups. The abnormality rate in males decreased by 56.90% following the adjustment of the reference interval. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that UA levels at all ages exhibited varying degrees of "right shift". Additionally, the low-value population should not be overlooked in the clinical evaluation of UA test results. Setting a reasonable reference interval and clinical decision level is crucial for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

RESUMO

KEY MESSAGE: To establish a sterile culture system and protoplast regeneration system for Bryum argenteum, and to establish and apply CRISPR/Cas9 system in Bryum argenteum. Bryum argenteum is a fascinating, cosmopolitan, and versatile moss species that thrives in various disturbed environments. Because of its comprehensive tolerance to the desiccation, high UV and extreme temperatures, it is emerging as a model moss for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to abiotic stresses. However, the lack of basic tools such as gene transformation and targeted genome modification has hindered the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the survival of B. argenteum in different environments. Here, we reported the protonema of B. argenteum can survive up to 95.4% water loss. In addition, the genome size of B. argenteum is approximately 313 Mb by kmer analysis, which is smaller than the previously reported 700 Mb. We also developed a simple method for protonema induction and an efficient protoplast isolation and regeneration protocol for B. argenteum. Furthermore, we established a PEG-mediated protoplast transient transfection and stable transformation system for B. argenteum. Two homologues of ABI3(ABA-INSENSITIVE 3) gene were successfully cloned from B. argenteum. To further investigate the function of the ABI3 gene in B. argenteum, we used the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic editing system to target the BaABI3A and BaABI3B gene in B. argenteum protoplasts. This resulted in mutagenesis at the target in about 2-5% of the regenerated plants. The isolated abi3a and abi3b mutants exhibited increased sensitivity to desiccation, suggesting that BaABI3A and BaABI3B play redundant roles in desiccation stress. Overall, our results provide a rapid and simple approach for molecular genetics in B. argenteum. This study contributes to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to extreme environmental.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the accuracy of three parameters (white-to-white distance [WTW], angle-to-angle [ATA], and sulcus-to-sulcus [STS]) in predicting postoperative vault and to formulate an optimized predictive model. METHODS: In this retrospective study, a cohort of 465 patients (comprising 769 eyes) who underwent the implantation of the V4c implantable Collamer lens with a central port (ICL) for myopia correction was examined. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and classification models were used to predict postoperative vault. The influences of WTW, ATA, and STS on predicting the postoperative vault and ICL size were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: The dataset was randomly divided into training (80%) and test (20%) sets, with no significant differences observed between them. The screened variables included only seven variables which conferred the largest signal in the model, namely, lens thickness (LT, estimated coefficients for logistic least absolute shrinkage of -0.20), STS (-0.04), size (0.08), flat K (-0.006), anterior chamber depth (0.15), spherical error (-0.006), and cylindrical error (-0.0008). The optimal prediction model depended on STS (R2=0.419, RMSE=0.139), whereas the least effective prediction model relied on WTW (R2=0.395, RMSE=0.142). In the classified prediction models of the vault, classification prediction of the vault based on STS exhibited superior accuracy compared to ATA or WTW. CONCLUSIONS: This study compared the capabilities of WTW, ATA, and STS in predicting postoperative vault, demonstrating that STS exhibits a stronger correlation than the other two parameters.

RESUMO

The seminal vesicle is an important accessory gland of the male reproductive system. In the past, some scholars focused more on its role in the fertilization process and neglected its relationship with male sexual function. Researches show that the seminal vesicle is involved in multiple processes such as sexual desire, penile erection, and ejaculation. Treatment of sexual dysfunction by medication targeting the seminal vesicle has achieved certain therapeutic effects. This article discusses the relationship between the seminal vesicle and sexual function in terms of physiopathology, clinical study and basic research, hoping to provide some new ideas on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction.

RESUMO

In this study, amino-functionalized mesoporous silica/hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (MSNS/HAP) with the property of acid dissociation have been prepared as a traditional Chinese medicine monomer carriers to improve the drug loading rate and antibacterial properties of antimicrobial quercetin (QUE) in vitro. The experimental results confirm that the drug loading rate of MSNs/HAP is 28.94 %, which is about 3.6 times higher than that of aminated mesoporous sililca nanoparticles (MSNs). The drug release of QUE on MSNs/HAP is pH-sensitive in phosphate buffered saline (pH=4.0-7.4). The above fabricated traditional Chinese medicine monomer modified nanocomposites (QUE@MSNs/HAP) displays concentration-dependent inhibitory effect, which shows better antibacterial effect than free QUE. The minimum inhibitory concentration for two tested bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) and Escherichia coli (E.coli), is 256 mg·L -1. In summary, QUE@MSNs/HAP have successfully prepared, which not only improves the bio-availability of QUE, but also has acid-sensitive drug release properties. Compared with free QUE, its antibacterial performance significantly enhances, which provides a theoretical basis for the application of Chinese medicine molecules in bacterial treatment.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) is a significant pathogen in cats, causing respiratory and ocular diseases with consequential economic and welfare implications. (2) Methods: This study aimed to isolate and characterize FHV-1 from clinical samples and assess its pathogenicity. We collected 35 nasal and ocular swabs from cats showing symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection and FHV positivity detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Viral isolation was carried out using feline kidney (F81) cell lines. Confirmation of FHV-1 presence was achieved through PCR detection, sequencing, electron microscopy, and indirect immunofluorescence assay. The isolated strains were further characterized by evaluating their titers, growth kinetics, and genetic characteristics. Additionally, we assessed the pathogenicity of the isolated strains in a feline model, monitoring clinical signs, viral shedding, and histopathological changes. (3) Results: Three strains of FHV-1 were isolated, purified, and identified. The isolated FHV-1 strains exhibited high homology among themselves and with domestic isolates and FHV-1 viruses from around the world. However, they showed varying degrees of virulence, with one strain (FHV-A1) causing severe clinical signs and histopathological lesions. (4) Conclusion: This study advances our understanding of the genetic and pathogenic characteristics of FHV-1 in China. These findings underscore FHV-A1 isolate as a potentially ideal candidate for establishing a challenge model and as a potential vaccine strain for vaccine development.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to accurately predict vault and Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) size. METHODS: The methodology focused on enhancing predictive capabilities through the fusion of machine-learning algorithms. Specifically, AdaBoost, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Support Vector Regression, LightGBM, and XGBoost were integrated into a majority-vote model. The performance of each model was evaluated using appropriate metrics such as accuracy, precision, F1-score, and area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: The majority-vote model exhibited the highest performance among the classification models, with an accuracy of 81.9% area under the curve (AUC) of 0.807. Notably, LightGBM (accuracy = 0.788, AUC = 0.803) and XGBoost (ACC = 0.790, AUC = 0.801) demonstrated competitive results. For the ICL size prediction, the Random Forest model achieved an impressive accuracy of 85.3% (AUC = 0.973), whereas XG-Boost (accuracy = 0.834, AUC = 0.961) and LightGBM (accuracy = 0.816, AUC = 0.961) maintained their compatibility. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the potential of diverse machine learning algorithms to enhance postoperative vault and ICL size prediction, ultimately contributing to the safety of ICL implantation procedures. Furthermore, the introduction of the novel majority-vote model demonstrates its capability to combine the advantages of multiple models, yielding superior accuracy. Importantly, this study will empower ophthalmologists to use a precise tool for vault prediction, facilitating informed ICL size selection in clinical practice. RESUMO

Background: Numerous observational studies have presented an association between Vitamin D (VD) and Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD). However, sufficient evidence from Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) substantiating this correlation is scarce, thus leaving the causality of this relationship ambiguous. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional observational studies, we performed a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to ascertain the causal relationship between VD and ALD. Methods: We utilized summary statistics datasets from Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) for VD and ALD. We selected genetic instruments that measure circulating VD levels (n = 64,979), and retrieved ALD statistics from GWASs, inclusive of 1,416 cases and 217,376 healthy controls, while excluding chronic liver diseases such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, toxic liver disease, and viral hepatitis. Subsequent, MR analyses were performed to obtain effect estimates using inverse variance weighted (IVW) random effect models. Cochran's Q statistic and MR-Egger regression intercept analyses were used to assess pleiotropy. Sensitivity analyses using the MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode methods were also performed. Leave-one-out analysis was used to identify SNPs with potential effect. Reverse MR analysis was also performed. Results: In IVW, our MR analysis incorporated 21 independent SNPs, circulating VD levels had no causal effect on ALD [OR = 0.624 (0.336-1.160), p = 0.136] and ALD had no causal effect on circulating VD [OR = 0.997 (0.986-1.008), p = 0.555]. No heterogeneity or pleiotropy was observed (p > 0.05). Other MR methods also agreed with IVW results. Conclusion: This study provides the causal relationship between genetically predicted circulating Vitamin D levels and ALD and provides new insights into the genetics of ALD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to determine whether there exists an association between low-grade systemic inflammation, as measured by serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and the risk of lower-extremity deep venous thrombosis (LEDVT) in patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). METHODS: This observational study was retrospectively conducted on patients with primary ICH who were presented to two tertiary medical centers between January 2021 and August 2022. The primary outcome was detecting LEDVT occurrence within 14 days from the onset of the acute ICH episode. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were employed to estimate the association between CRP and LEDVT following 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: Of the 538 patients with primary ICH who met the inclusion criteria, 76 (14.13%) experienced LEDVT. Based on the cut-off levels of CRP measured upon admission from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, patients with primary ICH were categorized into two groups: (i) CRP < 1.59 mg/L and (ii) CRP ≥ 1.59 mg/L. After 1:1 PSM, the LEDVT events occurred in 24.6% of patients with CRP ≥ 1.59 mg/L and 4.1% of patients with CRP < 1.59 mg/L (P < 0.001). ROC curve revealed the area under the ROC curve of 0.717 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.669-0.761, P < 0.001] for CRP to predict LEDVT with a sensitivity of 85.71% and specificity of 56.29%. After adjusting for all confounding variables, the occurrence of LEDVT in ICH patients with higher CRP levels (≥ 1.59 mg/L) was 10.8 times higher compared to those with lower CRP levels (95% CI 4.5-25.8, P < 0.001). A nonlinear association was observed between CRP and an increased risk of LEDVT in the fully adjusted model (P for overall < 0.001, P for nonlinear = 0.001). The subgroup results indicated a consistent positive link between CRP and LEDVT events following primary ICH. CONCLUSIONS: Higher initial CRP levels (CRP as a dichotomized variable) in patients with primary ICH are significantly associated with an increased risk of LEDVT and may help identify high-risk patients with LEDVT. Clinicians should be vigilant to enable early and effective intervention in patients at high risk of LEDVT.

RESUMO

Background: Lianhuaqingwen (LHQW), a traditional Chinese medicine comprised of 13 herbal extracts renowned for their robust heat-clearing and detoxifying properties, has gained widespread utilization in China but has yet to garner similar recognition abroad. It is believed to exhibit efficacy in ameliorating symptoms in individuals afflicted with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the precise impact of LHQW on viral shedding (VS), particularly in the context of mild or asymptomatic infections caused by the Omicron BF.4/5 or BF.7 variants of COVID-19, remained inadequately elucidated. Consequently, a real-world study was conducted, involving patients diagnosed with COVID-19, with the primary objective of ascertaining the effectiveness of LHQW in this specific clinical context. Methods: We conducted an investigation on Omicron-infected patients through a single-center, propensity score-matched real-world study conducted at Xiaotangshan Fangcang Hospital from May to November 2022. A total of 3,368 COVID-19 patients were enrolled in the study, all of whom presented mild or asymptomatic infections caused by either BF.4/5 or BF.7 strains of the virus. Demographic and clinical data were systematically collected from medical records. Patients were allocated to receive treatment with LHQW (designated as the treatment group) or received no LHQW treatment (designated as the not-treated/no-treatment group). Viral load was quantified utilizing quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), and the duration of VS was defined as the time interval between the initial negative test result and the date of COVID-19 diagnosis or symptom onset. Results: The study encompassed a cohort of 3,368 patients, and following propensity score matching, a subset of 296 patients was meticulously chosen for subsequent analysis. Notably, baseline characteristics exhibited disparities between the treatment and not-treated/no-treatment groups. However, post-matching, these characteristics achieved a commendable level of comparability. Our findings unequivocally demonstrated that there existed no statistically significant disparity in VS. This holds true when comparing patients subjected to LHQW treatment against those not administered LHQW, as well as when contrasting individuals presenting asymptomatic and mild COVID-19 manifestations. Conclusion: No statistically significant difference in VS was observed between patients who underwent LHQW treatment and those who did not. Additional investigations are imperative to provide a comprehensive assessment of LHQW's efficacy, particularly in patients afflicted with severe COVID-19 or those infected with viral strains distinct from BF.4/5 or BF.7.

RESUMO

Background: Data on viral kinetics and variants affecting the duration of viral shedding were limited. Our objective was to determine viral shedding in distinct severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 variants, including Omicron BA.4/5 and BF.7, and to identify the relevant influencing factors. Methods: We carried out a longitudinal cohort study at Beijing Xiaotangshan Fangcang shelter hospital from May to June 2022 (Omicron BA.4/5) and from November to December 2022 (Omicron BF.7). Nucleocapsid protein (N) and open reading frame (ORF) genes were considered as the target genes of the reverse transcription PCR. The daily results of cycle threshold (CT), including lowest ORF1ab-CT values for days 1-3 post-hospitalisation and lowest N-CT values for days 1-3 post-hospitalisation (CT3minN) and demographic and clinical characteristics were collected. Results: 1433 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were recruited from the Fangcang shelter hospital, in which 278 patients were diagnosed with Omicron BA.4/5 and 1155 patients with Omicron BF.7. Patients with BF.7 infection showed a longer duration of viral shedding. The duration of viral shedding was associated with the variants age, alcohol use, the severity of COVID-19 and CT3minN. Moreover, the nomogram had excellent accuracy in predicting viral shedding. Conclusions: Our results indicated that patients with Omicron BF.7 had a longer period of contagiousness than those with BA.4/5. The duration of viral shedding was affected by a variety of factors and the nomogram may become an applicable clinical instrument to predict viral shedding. Furthermore, we developed a new COVID-19 viral shedding predicting model that can accurately predict the duration of viral shedding for COVID-19, and created a user-friendly website to apply this prediction model (https://puh3.shinyapps.io/CVSP_Model/).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Smoothened (SMO), a key component of the hedgehog signaling pathway, represents a therapeutic target for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), yet the chemotherapy response rate in TNBC patients is only 40-50%, underscoring the urgent need for the development of novel drugs to effectively treat this condition. The novel compound TPB15, an SMO inhibitor derived from [1,2,4] triazolo [4,3-α] pyridines, demonstrated superior anti-TNBC activity and lower toxicity compared to the first SMO inhibitor vismodegib in both in vitro and in vivo. However, the compound's pharmacokinetic properties remain unclear. The present work aims to develop a simple HPLC-MS/MS method to profile the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of TPB15 in rats as a ground work for further clinical research. METHODS: Separation was performed on an Agilent ZORBAX StableBond C18 column by gradient elution using acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid as mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Multiple reaction monitoring(MRM) in positive mode with the transitions of m/z 454.2 → 100.0, 248.1 → 121.1 was employed to determine TPB15 and internal standard tinidazole, respectively. The specificity, intra- and inter- day precision and accuracy, extraction recovery, stability, matrix effect, dilution integrity and carryover of the method was validated. The pharmacokinetics and bioavailability  study of TPB15 were carried out on rats through intravenous injection at the dose of 5 mg/kg and oral gavage at the dose of 25 mg/kg, and the pharmacokinetics parameters were calculated by the non-compartment analysis using the pharmacokinetics software DAS 2.1.1. RESULTS: The values of specificity, intra- and inter- day precision and accuracy, extraction recovery, stability, matrix effect, dilution integrity and carryover satisfied the acceptable limits. The lower limit of quantification of this method was 10 ng/mL with a linear range of 10-2000 ng/mL. The validated method was then applied to pharmacokinetics and bioavailability studies in rat by dosing with gavage (25 mg/kg) and intravenous injection(5 mg/kg), and the oral bioavailability of TBP15 in rat was calculated as 16.4 ± 3.5%. The pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated as following: maximum of plasma concentration (Cmax) (PO: 2787.17 ± 279.45 µg/L), Time to maximum plasma concentration (Tmax) (PO: 4.20 ± 0.90 h), the area under the concentration-time curve 0 to time (AUC0-t) (PO: 17,373.03 ± 2585.18 ng/mL·h, IV: 21,129.79 ± 3360.84 ng/mL·h), the area under the concentration-time curve 0 to infinity (AUC0-∞) (PO: 17,443.85 ± 2597.63 ng/mL·h, IV: 17,443.85 ± 2597.63 ng/mL·h), terminal elimination half-life (t1/2) (PO: 7.26 ± 2.16 h, IV: 4.78 ± 1.09 h). CONCLUSIONS: TPB15, a promising candidate for treating TNBC, has demonstrated outstanding efficacy and safety in vitro and in vivo. This study established a simple, sensitive, and rapid HPLC-MS/MS bioanalytical method, developed and validated in accordance with FDA and EMA guidelines, for conducting pharmacokinetic and bioavailability studies of TPB15. The results revealed a favorable pharmacokinetic profile owing to its long t1/2. Nevertheless, the next phase of research should include formulation screening to enhance bioavailability, as well as clinical trials, metabolism pathway analysis, and assessment of potential drug-drug interactions.

RESUMO

Objective:To analyze the source of infection, clinical symptoms and epidemiological characteristics of pertussis surveillance cases in Minhang District of Shanghai from 2017 to 2019,so as to provide the basis for pertussis surveillance and immunization strategy. Methods:Descriptive epidemiological method was used to analyze the pertussis surveillance cases. Results:A total of 334 cases were included in the pertussis active surveillance system, 237 cases were confirmed cases. There were 13 towns or streets in Minhang District, except for Pujin Street, all the other 12 towns or streets had cases. The high risk group (131/237, 55.27% of the cases) were the infants under five months old who did not reach the age of immunization or did not complete the basic immunization of diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis combined vaccine (DTaP). The cases mainly occurred in March to July, accounting for 71.31% (169/237). The highest culture-positive rate of Bordetella pertussis was in August (82.76%, 24/29); the highest positive rate of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection was in March (58.82%, 20/34). All the monitored cases had cough symptoms with an average cough days of 22.05±9.81 in confirmed cases. A total of 64 clustered outbreaks were detected, with an attack rate of 37.45% (94/251). 32.91% (78/237) of the cases had contact history with coughing patients 21 days before the onset, and 94.87% (74/78) of them were family members. The aggregation of pertussis was mainly transmitted from adults to infants and infants to adults. Conclusion:Children under five months old are the high incidence population of pertussis, and family members are the main source of infection. It is suggested that pertussis monitoring and prevention should be carried out in adolescents and adults.

RESUMO

The development of Chinese medicine and Western medicine andrology is based on different social background and academic systems, either Chinese medicine or Western medicine andrology has their limitations, therefore, integration of Chinese and Western medicine (ICWM) andrology is in a great need. After more than 30 years of development, andrology has made great achievements in the construction of specialized academic association, holding academic conferences and publication of academic monographs, and the research progress on this field is mainly in the combination of disease and syndrome, microdifferentiation of symptoms and signs and basic research development. However, the comprehensive theoretic system of ICWM andrology has not yet established, and the related studies are still on the primary stage. In the future studies, great efforts still need to be made to expand the methods for the investigation of ICWM, and make innovations in the field of andrology.

Spermatogenesis is a complex and precise process of differentiation of germ cells, which involves three stages: mitosis of spermatogonia, meiosis of spermatocytes and formation of spermatozoa. The process is controlled by many factors, including regulation of cyclins in spermatogenic cells, which plays a pivotal role. Cyclins form heterologous dimer compounds with protein kinase activity by binding to cyclin-dependent kinases, then phosphorylate multiple proteins and promote the orderly conduct of each phase of the cell cycle. In recent years, cyclins A, B, D and E have been found to play important roles in the regulation of spermatogenesis. This article presents an overview on the roles of these four cyclins in regulating the progression of spermatogenesis.
