RESUMO

Water erosion poses a significant environmental threat in the Mediterranean region, with pronounced impacts observed throughout Morocco. It impairs soil quality and disrupts both sediment transport and water availability. Contributing factors range from natural (climate, topography, and geology) to anthropogenic (land use, vegetation cover, and management). This study introduces an improved Priority Actions Program/Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC) model, enriched with GIS and the Caesium-137 (137Cs) technique, to investigate erosion within Morocco's Raouz basin. Enhanced with additional variables including soil types, slope length, rainfall erosion potential, slope orientation, soil moisture, and land surface temperature, the model transcends the classical approach, promoting granularity and precision in predictions. In addition to the comprehensive model, the 137Cs method, which discerns long-term soil erosion and redistribution, provides a dual-faceted validation, bolstering the robustness of this project's erosion risk evaluation. This study's outcomes underscore the gravity of the erosion hazard with significant soil depletion rates ranging from 8.1 to 20 t ha-1 yr-1, demonstrating the model's alignment with empirical data, affirming its utility. The modified PAP/RAC model concurs with the 137Cs data, demonstrating its usefulness for water erosion assessment and management in similar areas.

The transformation of phosphate ore into phosphoric acid results in the generation of high volumes of phosphogypsum (PG), an industrial by-product largely stockpiled worldwide. This solution, considered as the least damaging to the environment, constitutes a risk for the receiving environment due to the presence of harmful impurities such as heavy metals and radionuclides which hinder its large-scale valorization. This paper presents an environmental characterization of Moroccan phosphogypsum and an investigation on the environmental performance of a new lime (L) - fly ash (FA) treated phosphogypsum based road material. The concentration of metallic trace elements (Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu) in raw phosphogypsum ranged between 0.2 and 243 ppm, while its radioactivity reached 970 Bq/kg for Ra-226. The environmental performance of the proposed new road material (40% PG, 42% FA, 18% L) was evaluated using radiological risk indices besides static and dynamic leaching tests. The results showed a radioactivity reduction up to 82%, and an immobilization of metallic trace elements ranging from 25 to 100%. The stabilization/solidification mechanisms involved in the lime - fly ash treatment would be responsible for the fixation of these contaminants within the newly formed matrix.

Soil erosion is a serious problem in Palestine. It is enhanced mainly by poor farming practices used in upland agricultural areas occupying the Central Highland of Palestine. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of terracing on soil erosion and deposition rates in the Al-Yamoun area (the Northern West Bank) using the fallout radionuclides cesium -137 (FRN 137Cs). The FRN 137Cs technique, which has proved its efficiency in estimating erosion rates over the last 50-60 years, was used for the first time in Palestine to measure rates of erosion and deposition. The activity of 137Cs was measured by gamma spectrometry using an HPGe detector. For the reference site, the 137Cs inventories ranged between 2499 and 4086 Bq/m2. The average value of the reference site is 3315 ± 410 Bq/m2, which corresponds to a coefficient of variance of 12%, suggesting that the reference site is well representative for estimating 137Cs fallout. This 137Cs amount is too high for bomb-derived fallout and indicates that a significant part of the deposition is from the Chernobyl accident. The 137Cs inventories at both studied sites (terrace site and foot slope site) are significantly lower than those of the reference site. For the terrace site, the inventories are found between 1707 and 2749 Bq/m2, while for the slope site they are between 1050 and 2617 Bq/m2. The lower 137Cs values at both studied sites than values at the reference site indicate that the entire areas of both study sites are eroded and no depositional activity occurs.

Macroalgae species Codium sp, Bangia atropurpurea, Membranoptera alata, Plocamium cartilagineum, Dictyota dichotoma, Fucus spiralis and Stypocaulon scoparia were collected from seven stations along the north coast of Morocco. Samples were analysed to determine activities of naturally occurring radionuclides ((210)Pb, U isotopes and (40)K) and concentrations of metals (Zn, Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Mn, Pb, Cd, As and Cr) using radiometric and ICP-OES techniques, respectively. Metal concentrations were within ranges reported in the scientific literature, and concentrations of bio-essential elements were in the order Mn>Fe> Zn>Cu in all samples. Brown algae had the highest concentrations of almost all metals, and concentrations decreased in the order brown>red>green algae. With respect to radionuclides, the red alga P. cartilagineum had the highest activities of (210)Pb, in most cases an order of magnitude higher than for the green alga Codium sp. (234)U and (238)U activities in all algae samples were in the range 0.96- 7.61 and 1.16-6.14 Bq/kg dry weight, respectively. Our analyses of radionuclide activities and metal concentrations in marine macroalgae showed large differences among taxa. These results provide insights into which algal species should be used for biomonitoring programmes.

Ornaments such as beads are among the earliest signs of symbolic behavior among human ancestors. Their appearance signals important developments in both cognition and social relations. This paper describes and presents contextual information for 33 shell beads from Bizmoune Cave (southwest Morocco). Many of the beads come as deposits dating to ≥142 thousand years, making them the oldest shell beads yet recovered. They extend the dates for the first appearance of this behavior into the late Middle Pleistocene. The ages and ubiquity of beads in Middle Stone Age (MSA) sites in North Africa provide further evidence of the potential importance of these artifacts as signals of identity. The early and continued use of Tritia gibbosula and other material culture traits also suggest a remarkable degree of cultural continuity among early MSA Homo sapiens groups across North Africa.
