RESUMO

Through this study, the results of density functional theory calculations within the local density approximation of the electronic structure of zigzag-zigzag double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), with chiral indices (n, 0)@(m, 0) for n = 7-15, and m = 15-26, has been presented and the effects of interwall interaction and orbital hybridization on the electronic structure of these systems has been discussed. It was observed that the electronic band gap of the aforementioned DWCNTs depends on the interwall distance only for metallic-semiconductor configurations and on the intrinsic properties of the constituent tubes in all other combinations. It was also observed that the calculated band gap for most of the metallic-metallic DWCNTs was smaller than semiconductor-metallic, metallic-semiconductor, and semiconductor-semiconductor configurations. Metallic-semiconductor DWCNTs were found to be desirable for band gap tuning applications because of their dependence on interwall distance, opening up the possibility of using such systems in electronic device applications, such as transistors. Other applications include the use of DWCNTs in macroscopic carbon nanotube conducting wires, for which metallic-metallic and semiconducting-metallic zigzag-zigzag DWCNTs were found to be the most desirable configurations due to their small band gaps.

RESUMO

A series of 6-substituted and 5,6-disubstituted 2-(6-methyl-benzofuran-3-ylmethyl)-imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazoles have been synthesized. The new compounds have been tested for their in vivo analgesic, anti-inflammatory activities. Qualitative SAR studies indicate that the chloro substitution in the imidazole ring and introduction of formyl group at C-5 position of the imidazole ring increased the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. All the newly synthesized compounds have been characterized by spectral data and ORTEP diagram of one of the intermediates 6-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(6-methyl-benzofuran-3-ylmethyl)-5-morpholin-4-ylmethyl imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole is reported herein.

RESUMO

A study has been carried out to assess the potential use of pectin in combination with two added hydrocolloids, i.e., hydroxy-propyl-methyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose in varied concentrations and coated with ethyl cellulose and cellulose acetate phthalate. The results of in vitro drug release showed that the matrix tablets prepared with pectin, hydroxy ethyl cellulose (20 percent) when coated with ethyl cellulose and cellulose acetate phthalate were found to be 63.0 percent, 8.4 percent, and 4.5 percent, respectively, in after eight hours during drug release study period. These results were confirmed with the results of roentgenographic studies in nine healthy human volunteers to find the shape and integrity of the dosage form. The X-ray photographs revealed that the enteric-coated tablet was visible only up to 5.5 hours and at the end of eighth hour, the photograph has not shown any presence of tablet indicating the loss of shape and size by the microflora present in the colon region. So, the results of in vitro and roentgenographic studies revealed that pectin, hydroxy ethyl cellulose (20 percent) base coated with ethyl cellulose and cellulose acetate phthalate was found to be a promising carrier for naproxen to colon.

RESUMO

Biochanin-A (BCA), a potent phytoconstituent, has been previously used as an antitumour, a dopaminergic neuron protective agent, an antioxidant, an anticholinergic and on other pharmacological activities including neuroprotection. The present study was aimed to evaluate the behavioural and neurochemical evidence of BCA in cognitive-deficit mice in scopolamine challenged and natural aged-induced amnesia models in young and aged mice, respectively. BCA has exhibited decrease in the transfer latency and increase in step through latency significantly (p < 0.001) in scopolamine-treated and natural aged mice of exteroceptive behavioural models such as elevated plus maze and passive shock avoidance paradigm, respectively. A decrease in acetylcholinesterase activity of whole brain was seen in scopolamine and aged mice with standard piracetam (Pira; p < 0.001) and BCA in dose-dependent manner. The antioxidant property of BCA was proven by increase in GSH (p < 0.01) and decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances level significantly in a scopolamine-challenged and aged mice. The scopolamine-treated mice exhibited significant (p < 0.01) increase in the content of noradrenalin and dopamine, which is a sign of dementia, and these excess increased neurotransmitters were reversed by BCA 40 mg kg(-1) (p < 0.05), BCA 20 mg kg(-1) (p > 0.05), BCA 10 mg kg(-1) (p < 0.05) and standard Pira (p < 0.05) when compared with scopolamine group. Furthermore, in histopathology of hippocampus, the Pira and BCA-treated mice were protected from the formation of pyknotic neurons, increases in the viable cells count and decreases in the number of degenerative cells compared with the scopolamine group. Hence, BCA could be potential enough for the betterment of Alzheimer's disease.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to isolate the harmine alkaloids from the seeds of Peganum harmala (TAPH) and its cerebroprotective effect on cognitive deficit mice. The tested doses of TAPH were screened for Sodium nitrite induced hypoxia and Ethanol induced neurodegeneration using behavioral models. The TAPH was found to be non-neurotoxic and Psychoactive by preventing the motor impairment and increasing the locomotion activity of animals in Rota rod and Actophotometer respectively. TAPH (5, 2.5 and 1.25 mg kg(-1) p.o.) significantly (p < 0.001) protected the Sodium nitrite induced memory impairment by decreasing the time require to find the water bottle in special water bottle case model. In Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) and Passive Shock Avoidance paradigm (PSA) the TAPH shown improved acquisition and retention memory significantly (p < 0.001) by decreasing the Transverse Latency Time (TLT) and increasing the Step Down Latency (SDL), respectively in dose dependent manner. The results were well supported by biochemical parameters, by inhibiting the Acetylcholinestrase (p < 0.01) activity, increasing the GSH (p < 0.001) level and decreasing the TBARS (p < 0.001) level of whole brain. Moreover TAPH has shown the significant Monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) inhibition action (p < 0.001), hence it reduces the metabolism of epinephrine, 5-HT and other monoamines and enhances the action of these neurotransmitters indirectly; this adrenergic system plays an important role in learning and memory. Further, TAPH (5 mg kg(-1)) protect the DNA fragmentation of frontotemporal cortex of the brain from hypoxic effect induced by Sodium nitrite in Gel Electrophoresis studies. The results were comparable to their respective standards. Hence, harmine alkaloids are potential enough to utilize in the management of Neurodegenerative disorders of the type Alzheimer's diseases.

RESUMO

Although pronounced heterosis in inter-subspecific hybrids was known in rice for a long time, its utilization for hybrid rice breeding has been limited due to their hybrid sterility (HS). For the last two decades, however, a few inter-subspecific hybrids have been developed by incorporating wide-compatibility genes (WCG) that resolve HS, into parental lines of these inter-subspecific hybrids. For effective use of WCG, it is necessary to find convenient markers linked to WCG of practical importance. In this paper, initially a set of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers in the vicinity of known WCG loci identified based on comparative linkage maps have been surveyed in a population derived from the three-way cross- IR36/Dular//Akihikari, where a known donor of WCG Dular was crossed to a representative indica and japonica cultivar. Of the five parental polymorphic markers, RM253 and RM276 were found to be closely linked to the WCG locus S5 at a distance of 3.0 and 2.8 cM, respectively. Later, loci for HS were examined in three F(2) populations derived from inter-subspecific crosses, with same set of SSR markers. The locus S8 was confirmed to have major influence on HS in the F(2 )population derived from CHMRF-1/Taichung65 since two SSR markers in its vicinity, RM412 and RM141, co-segregated with HS at a map distance of 7.6 and 4.8 cM, respectively. In the F(2) population derived from the cross BPT5204/Taipei309, three SSR markers in the vicinity of S5, RM50, RM276 and RM136 co-segregated with HS at a map distance of 4.2, 3.2 and 7.8 cM, respectively. In the third F(2 )population derived from Swarna/Taipei309, the SSR markers in the vicinity of S5, RM225, RM253, RM50, RM276 and RM136 were identified to co-segregate with HS at a map distance of 3.2, 2.6, 3.4, 2.6 and 6.6 cM, respectively. These results indicated a clear picture of WCG in Dular as well as the predominant role of HS alleles at S5 locus. The identified SSR markers are expected to be used for incorporation of WCG into parental lines in hybrid rice breeding to solve HS in inter-subspecific hybrids.

RESUMO

Host-plant resistance is the preferred strategy for management of Asian rice gall midge (Orseolia oryzae), a serious pest in many rice-growing countries. The deployment of molecular markers linked to gall midge resistance genes in breeding programmes can accelerate the development of resistant cultivars. In the present study, we have tagged and mapped a dominant gall midge resistance gene, Gm1, from the Oryza sativa cv. W1263 on chromosome 9, using SSR markers. A progeny-tested F2 mapping population derived from the cross W1263/TN1 was used for analysis. To map the gene locus, initially a subset of the F2 mapping population consisting of 20 homozygous resistant and susceptible lines each was screened with 63 parental polymorphic SSR markers. The SSR markers RM316, RM444 and RM219, located on chromosome 9, are linked to Gm1 at genetic distances of 8.0, 4.9 and 5.9 cM, respectively, and flank the gene locus. Further, gene/marker order was also determined. The utility of the co-segregating SSR markers was tested in a backcross population derived from the cross Swarna/W1263//Swarna, and allelic profiles of these markers were analysed in a set of donor rice genotypes possessing Gm1 and in a few gall midge-susceptible, elite rice varieties.
