RESUMO

A collaborative assessment approach, including impact index of comprehensive quality (IICQ), food pollution index (FPI), and single factor pollution index (PI), was used to simultaneously select priority metal pollutants and assess metal contamination status in the plastic-shed soil (PSS)-vegetable system of the industrial towns situated in the Yangtze River Delta, China. Overall, significant Cr increment as well as Cd and Cu pollution in PSS existed, which was related to anthropogenic activities, especially industrial wastewater irrigation. The evaluation using PI and FPI demonstrated that priority metal pollutants were Cu and Cd in PSS while Cr and Cd in vegetables. Additionally, the estimation using IICQ method revealed that 23.3% and 13.3% of the sampling sites were sub-moderately and heavily contaminated by metals, respectively. These sites especially with heavy pollution need priority pollution management. These data will be beneficial to metal pollution control in PSS-vegetable system around industrial areas.

RESUMO

Growing concern has been paid to metals in soil-strawberry system. In contrast, few attempts have been made to investigate bioaccessible metals in strawberries and further assess health risk based on bioaccessible metals. Moreover, the connections between soil parameters (e.g. soil pH, organic matter (OM), total and bioavailable metals) and metal transfer in soil-strawberry-human system still need to be systematically investigated as well. Considering that strawberries are extensively grown under plastic-shed conditions in China, a total of 18 paired plastic-shed soil (PSS) and strawberry samples were taken from the strawberry bases located in the Yangtze River Delta of China as a case study to assess accumulation status, migration and health risk of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the PSS-strawberry-human system. Overall, heavy application of organic fertilizers induced accumulation and contamination of Cd and Zn in PSS. In particular, 55.6% and 44.4% of PSS samples had considerable and moderate ecological risk caused by Cd, respectively. Despite no metal pollution in strawberry, PSS acidification mainly caused by high nitrogen input promoted Cd and Zn uptake by strawberry and enhanced bioaccessible concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Ni. In contrast, the increased soil OM caused by organic fertilizer application decreased Zn migration in PSS-strawberry-human system. Additionally, bioaccessible metals in strawberries induced limited non-cancer and cancer risk. To mitigate accumulation of Cd and Zn in PSS and metal transfer in the food chain, feasible fertilization strategies should be developed and carried out.

RESUMO

Total concentrations of Cu, Pb, As, Cr, Ni and Zn were determined for 53 soil samples using portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) system in in-situ and ex-situ (Lab.) conditions. PXRF metal concentrations were statistically compared with analytical results from traditional AAS/AFS analysis. The ability of PXRF instrument to produce comparable analytical results to the reference method was assessed by linear regression. To investgate the effects of soil moisture on PXRF, the in-situ moisture content of all soil samples was quantified and the metal concentrations of selected samples with known moisture contents were measured too. The results showed that the detection limits of PXRF for Cu, Pb, As, Cr, Ni and Zn were 10.6, 8.1, 5.7, 22.5, 21.6 and 10.4 mg kg(-1) respectively. A good degree of linearity was found for Pb, Cr, Ni and Zn in in-situ condition. While in ex-situ condition, quantitative level data were achieved across the entire range of samples tested for Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni and Zn. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was shown to be an effective tool for quantification and rapid assessment of heavy metals in soils. Soil moisture content did affected the performance of PXRF, the mean percent difference for soil samples in-situ with moisture content less than 15% and higher than 25% was -17% and -31% respectively. In ex-situ condition, as the soil moisture content increased from air dried level to 30%, the mean percent difference decreased from 10% to -24%. The dilution effect of moisture in soils may cause discrepancies with conventional analytical results and induce worse data quality, and it should be controlled within 0-25% in in-situ condition.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are widely present in farmland soil as an emerging contaminant. This paper serves as a comprehensive and systematic review of research progress on the characteristics of distribution, abundance, sources, shape, polymer composition, size, and migration of MPs in farmland soils around the world. Moreover, research prospects were also proposed. MPs have been detected in farmland soils around the world, mainly coming from agricultural plastic films, organic fertilizers, sludge, surface runoff, agricultural irrigation, atmospheric deposition, and tire wear particles. The morphology of MPs in soil mainly includes debris, fibers, and films. MPs polymer forms mainly include polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Farmland land use significantly affects soil MPs abundance. Additionally, the abundance of MPs increase with the reduction in size. MPs in soil can migrate to deep soil through tillage, leaching, bioturbation, and gravity. Research on soil MPs detection methods, database establishment, safety thresholds, migration and transformation laws, potential ecological health risk assessment, and the construction of prevention and control technology systems should be strengthened in the future. The paper can provide a reference for the risk control and governance of farmland soil MPs pollution.

RESUMO

Concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were measured in water, sediments, Ceratophyllum (hornwort), and Bellamya sp. (edible snail) from residential, mixed (industrial and commercial), and agricultural areas with rural rivers in the Taihu Lake region, China. Zn concentrations were the highest, whereas Cd concentrations were the lowest among the six metals in water, sediments, and aquatic organisms. Cd was mainly present in the acid-soluble fraction, Cr in the residual fraction, and Pb in the reducible fraction of sediments. Heavy metal concentrations in water, sediments, and aquatic organisms in the three areas followed the order of the mixed area > residential area > agricultural area. Heavy metal concentrations in aquatic organisms were not only related to total metal concentrations in water and sediments but also to metal speciation concentrations in sediments. In addition, the bio-concentration factor (BCF) values of Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn for Bellamya sp. were higher than those for Ceratophyllum, whereas the BCF values of Cd and Ni for Bellamya sp. were lower than those for Ceratophyllum. An ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in sediments showed that Cd posed the highest ecological risk to the environment. A health risk assessment showed that consuming Bellamya sp. from the mixed area could cause a potential health risk.

RESUMO

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely used as plasticizers in both industrial and commercial products and have aroused considerable concern over their widespread distribution and potentially hazardous impacts on the environment. The present study investigated the distribution (concentrations at different sites) of PAEs in typical riverine sediments in southern Jiangsu Province and its relationship with the physical and chemical properties of the sediments. PAEs were detected in all 34 sediment samples analyzed, and the total concentrations of the six priority control PAEs in sediments ranged from 2.3 to 80.1 mg kg(-1) with a mean concentration of 13.2 ± 14.7 mg kg(-1). Land use significantly (p<0.05) influenced the PAE concentrations in the river sediments. The average PAE concentrations in mixed industrial and commercial districts were 27.8 ± 18.2 mg kg(-1), three and eight times higher than those in suburban areas (8.8 ± 3.7 mg kg(-1)) and an agricultural field (3.4 ± 0.9 mg kg(-1)), respectively. The concentrations of PAEs showed significant linear positive correlations with sediment organic matter and phosphorus but no significant correlation with sediment pH. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) were the dominant PAE compounds present in all examined sediment samples. These PAEs have relatively high ecotoxicology, but the potential risk of their transfer to the food chain needs further study.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The influences of byproduct amendments, containing silicon, calcium, magnesium and potassium, on acidic soil quality in Jiaodong Peninsula of China had been studied and compared with that of lime through monitoring physicochemical properties and enzyme activities of acidic soil over a 120-day period. Byproduct amendments (1125, 2250, 4500 and 9000 kg ha-1) and lime 2250 kg ha-1 was applied in the acidic soil. Results showed that both byproduct amendments and lime significantly increased the pH, EC and enzyme activities of soil. The by-product amendments inhibited microbial biomass carbon and soil respiration. Nevertheless, the lime-treated soil had a much more higher level of CO2 emission than the by-product amendments-treated soil. Compared to the by-product amendments-treated soil, the lime-treated soil had the higher pH, peroxidase activity, phenol oxidase activity and invertase activity. Therefore, lime might be a better choice over by-product amendments to improve chemical and biological properties of the acidic soil in Jiaodong Peninsula of China. For soils lacking available calcium and magnesium, the mixture of 4500 kg ha-1 amendments and 2250 kg ha-1 lime was recommend to treat the soil.

To improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment and characterize the microorganism communities, microorganisms were cultured and concentrated in hybrid bioreactors at a low temperature (~4 °C, low-temperature hybrid bioreactor, LTHB) and room temperature (~25 °C, room-temperature hybrid bioreactor, RTHB). The performance of the LTHB and RTHB in terms of COD removal efficiency, dehydrogenase activity and functional diversity of microbial communities were evaluated. The results show COD removal efficiency increased gradually over time from 39.76% to 66.27% for LTHB and fluctuated between 81.85% and 94.78% for RTHB. The dehydrogenase activity and microbial activity in LTHB was higher than those in RTHB, implying that microorganisms cultured at low temperature had higher activities and adaptabilities than those cultured at room temperature. This study suggests that hybrid bioreactors can treat wastewater at both low and room temperatures and provides valuable insight into the adaptation processes of the microorganisms during temperature changes.
