RESUMO

Calcium phosphate coatings have been applied to titanium metal substrates and their alloys as a synergistic alternative capable of combining the mechanical properties of metals and the excellent bioactive properties provided by ceramic materials. However, the unsatisfactory adhesion of hydroxyapatite coatings on metallic substrates, as well as their limitation when subjected to mechanical stresses have been reported as a limitation. Biofunctional coatings have been proposed as an alternative to single ceramic coatings, aiming at optimizing the long-term clinical success of biomaterials such as Ti. This work aims at evaluating the morphological properties and biological behavior of Ti-cp coated with matrix composite coating hydroxyapatite-containing hybrid. The hybrid matrix was obtained from TEOS and MTES silicon precursors, with dispersed hydroxyapatite suspended by dip coating. For the morphological characterization FTIR, SEM/FEG, AFM and contact angle measurement were used. Biological behavior was evaluated for toxicity, cell viability and the osteogenic differentiation capacity of mesenchymal stem cells. The composite coatings obtained showed regular dispersion of hydroxyapatite particles in the hybrid matrix, with uniform coating adhering to the Ti-Cp substrate. Nevertheless, although they provided similar viability behavior of mesenchymal stem cells to the Ti-Cp substrate, the evaluated coatings did not present osteoinductive properties. This result is probably due to the pronounced hydrophobic behavior caused by the incorporation of HA.

RESUMO

The use of nanocellulose in pharmaceutics is a trend that has emerged in recent years. Its inherently good mechanical properties, compared to different materials, such as its high tensile strength, high elastic modulus and high porosity, as well as its renewability and biodegradability are driving nanocellulose's industrial use and innovations. In this sense, this study aims to conduct a search of patents from 2011 to 2023, involving applications of nanocellulose in pharmaceuticals. A patent search was carried out, employing three different patent databases: Patentscope from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); Espacenet; and LENS.ORG. Patents were separated into two main groups, (i) nanocellulose (NC) comprising all its variations and (ii) bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), and classified into five major areas, according to their application. A total of 215 documents was retrieved, of which 179 were referred to the NC group and 36 to the BNC group. The NC group depicted 49.7%, 15.6%, 16.2%, 8.9% and 9.5% of patents as belonging to design and manufacturing, cell culture systems, drug delivery, wound healing and tissue engineering clusters, respectively. The BNC group classified 44.5% of patents as design and manufacturing and 30.6% as drug delivery, as well as 5.6% and 19.4% of patents as wound healing and tissue engineering, respectively. In conclusion, this work compiled and classified patents addressing exclusively the use of nanocellulose in pharmaceuticals, providing information on its current status and trending advancements, considering environmental responsibility and sustainability in materials and products development for a greener upcoming future.

RESUMO

Given the global panorama of demands in the health area, the development of biomaterials becomes irreducible for the maintenance and/or improvement in the quality of life of the human being. Aiming to reduce the impacts related to infections in the healing processes of the dermal structure, the present work proposes the development of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based membranes with the incorporated polyhexamethylenebiguanide (PHMB) antimicrobial agent. In the present study, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films incorporated with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5% (w/w) of polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) were evaluated, aiming the development of a protective biomaterial that avoids cutaneous infections from the autochthonous and allochthonous microbiota. The disk diffusion of PHMB-loaded PDMS has shown the growth inhibition of Escherichia coli (ATCC 9637), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27953), Acinetobacter baumannii (ATCC 19606), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 12228), Streptococcus pyogenes (ATCC 19615), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633) and also yeast-like fungi Candida albicans, all microorganisms found on the epidermal surface. Likewise, the present study demonstrated low cytotoxicity of the PHMB-loaded PDMS on HaCaT and L929 cells at lower concentrations (0.1% w/w), indicating the possibility of using the developed material as a dressing for wounds, burns, and post-surgical procedures.

RESUMO

In this work, copolymers based on cashew gum (CG) grafted with polyacrylamide (PAM) were synthesized by microwave- and ultrasound-assisted methods, using potassium persulfate as an initiator in aqueous medium. The graft copolymers were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The efficiency of the graft copolymers (CG-g-PAM) in flocculation of a kaolin suspension was studied. Results indicated that the graft copolymers synthesized by ultrasound energy had better flocculation properties than the ones synthesized by the microwave-assisted method. The biodegradability of the graft copolymers was tested by inoculation with the basidiomycete Trametes villosa in liquid medium. The higher formation of biomass than that observed with the commercial flocculant Flonex-9045 indicated that the graft copolymer was accessible to enzymatic attack.
