Water quality agencies and scientists are increasingly adopting standardized sampling methodologies because of the challenges associated with interpreting data derived from dissimilar protocols. Here, we compare 13 protocols for monitoring streams from different regions and countries around the globe. Despite the spatially diverse range of countries assessed, many aspects of bioassessment structure and protocols were similar, thereby providing evidence of key characteristics that might be incorporated in a global sampling methodology. Similarities were found regarding sampler type, mesh size, sampling period, subsampling methods, and taxonomic resolution. Consistent field and laboratory methods are essential for merging data sets collected by multiple institutions to enable large-scale comparisons. We discuss the similarities and differences among protocols and present current trends and future recommendations for monitoring programs, especially for regions where large-scale protocols do not yet exist. We summarize the current state in one of these regions, Latin America, and comment on the possible development path for these techniques in this region. We conclude that several aspects of stream biomonitoring need additional performance evaluation (accuracy, precision, discriminatory power, relative costs), particularly when comparing targeted habitat (only the commonest habitat type) versus site-wide sampling (multiple habitat types), appropriate levels of sampling and processing effort, and standardized indicators to resolve dissimilarities among biomonitoring methods. Global issues such as climate change are creating an environment where there is an increasing need to have universally consistent data collection, processing and storage to enable large-scale trend analysis. Biomonitoring programs following standardized methods could aid international data sharing and interpretation.

To date, there are few examples of implementation science studies that help guide climate-related health adaptation. Implementation science is the study of methods to promote the adoption and integration of evidence-based tools, interventions, and policies into practice to improve population health. These studies can provide the needed empirical evidence to prioritise and inform implementation of health adaptation efforts. This Personal View discusses five case studies that deployed disease early warning systems around the world. These cases studies illustrate challenges to deploying early warning systems and guide recommendations for implementation science approaches to enhance future research. We propose theory-informed approaches to understand multilevel barriers, design strategies to overcome those barriers, and analyse the ability of those strategies to advance the uptake and scale-up of climate-related health interventions. These findings build upon previous theoretical work by grounding implementation science recommendations and guidance in the context of real-world practice, as detailed in the case studies.

Lanthanum (La) is a light rare-earth element that plays an essential role in manufacturing technological products, clean technologies, medical products, electron cathodes, scintillators, fluorescent lamps, and fertilizers. This study is the first investigation of La3+ biosorption using inactive lyophilized biomass from Penicillium simplicissimum INCQS 40,211. The maximum sorption capacity (qmax) for P. simplicissimum was 7.81 mg g-1. La 3+ biosorption followed the Freundlich model, where the biosorption system possibly multilayer coverage of P. simplicissimum by lanthanum ions. The kinetic data for the adsorption process obeyed a pseudo-second-order (R 2 > 0.92), indicating chemical sorption. The results indicated that inactive lyophilized biomass from Penicillium simplicissimum INCQS 40211are an excellent candidate for removing light rare-earth elements from aquatic environments.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is an epidemic-prone neglected disease that affects humans and animals, mostly in vulnerable populations. The One Health approach is a recommended strategy to identify drivers of the disease and plan for its prevention and control. In that context, the aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of human cases of leptospirosis in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and to explore possible drivers. Additionally, it sought to provide further evidence to support interventions and to identify hypotheses for new research at the human-animal-ecosystem interface. METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS: The risk for human infection was described in relation to environmental, socioeconomic, and livestock variables. This ecological study used aggregated data by municipality (all 496). Data were extracted from secondary, publicly available sources. Thematic maps were constructed and univariate analysis performed for all variables. Negative binomial regression was used for multivariable statistical analysis of leptospirosis cases. An annual average of 428 human cases of leptospirosis was reported in the state from 2008 to 2012. The cumulative incidence in rural populations was eight times higher than in urban populations. Variables significantly associated with leptospirosis cases in the final model were: Parana/Paraiba ecoregion (RR: 2.25; CI95%: 2.03-2.49); Neossolo Litolítico soil (RR: 1.93; CI95%: 1.26-2.96); and, to a lesser extent, the production of tobacco (RR: 1.10; CI95%: 1.09-1.11) and rice (RR: 1.003; CI95%: 1.002-1.04). CONCLUSION: Urban cases were concentrated in the capital and rural cases in a specific ecoregion. The major drivers identified in this study were related to environmental and production processes that are permanent features of the state. This study contributes to the basic knowledge on leptospirosis distribution and drivers in the state and encourages a comprehensive approach to address the disease in the animal-human-ecosystem interface.

This special issue of International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is dedicated to leptospirosis, an endemic zoonotic disease that is a cause of many acute undifferentiated fevers, especially in tropical countries. While it can be debated whether leptospirosis is an emerging disease, it is evident that it is becoming an emerging public health problem. It is recognized as a disease of epidemic potential that has a significant health impact in many parts of the world.

This study is part of the effort to test and to establish Rapid Bioassessment Protocols (RBP) using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of the water quality of wadeable streams in south-east Brazil. We compared the cost-effectiveness of sampling devices frequently used in RBPs, Surber and Kick-net samplers, and of three mesh sizes (125, 250 and 500 microm). A total of 126,815 benthic macroinvertebrates were collected, representing 57 families. Samples collected with Kick method had significantly higher richness and BMWP scores in relation to Surber, but no significant increase in the effort, measured by the necessary time to process samples. No significant differences were found between samplers considering the cost/effectiveness ratio. Considering mesh sizes, significantly higher abundance and time for processing samples were necessary for finer meshes, but no significant difference were found considering taxa richness or BMWP scores. As a consequence, the 500 microm mesh had better cost/effectiveness ratios. Therefore, we support the use of a kick-net with a mesh size of 500 microm for macroinvertebrate sampling in RBPs using family level in streams of similar characteristics in Brazil.

Este estudo é parte do esforço para o estabelecimento de um Protocolo de Bioavaliação Rápida (PBR) utilizando macroinvertebrados bentônicos como bioindicadores da qualidade de água de riachos no Sudeste do Brasil. Foi analisada a relação custo/eficácia de procedimentos de coleta freqüentemente utilizados em PBRs, amostradores do tipo Surber e Kick-net, e de três malhas, 125, 250 e 500 µm. Foram coletados e identificados 126.815 macroinvertebrados, representando 57 famílias. As amostras coletadas com Kick-net apresentaram número de taxa e de valores do índice BMWP significativamente maiores do que as coletadas com Surber, sem um aumento significativo no esforço amostral medido em tempo despendido para análise da amostra. Não houve diferenças significativas quanto à relação custo/eficácia entre os coletores. Quanto ao tamanho da malha, em 125 µm e 250 µm foram encontradas maiores abundância de macroinvertebrados e necessário mais tempo para processar as amostras, no entanto sem produzir diferenças significativas no número de taxa e em valores do índice BMWP. Assim, a malha de 500 µm foi considerada mais eficiente do que as malhas mais finas. Portanto, recomenda-se o uso de coletores do tipo kick usando uma malha de 500µm, para PBRs ao nível taxonômico de família em rios de características similares às deste estudo no Brasil.
