BACKGROUND: The present study was aimed at establishing the prevalence, epidemiology and molecular characterization of major haemoprotozoons (Babesia and Theileria) and rickettsia (Anaplasma) of cattle in Jammu region (North India) using microscopy and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Hematology, microscopy and PCR based prevalence studies were undertaken with 278 whole blood samples from cattle. Molecular prevalence studies were followed by genetic characterization of the isolates of Babesia, Anaplasma and Theileria spp. based on 18S rRNA, 16S rRNA and Tams1 gene, respectively. The data related to metrology and epidemiological variables like temperature, rainfall, season, age and type of livestock rearing was analyzed and correlated with occurrence of disease by statistical methods. RESULTS: The prevalence based on microscopy was 12.9% (36/278) whereas PCR recorded 30.22% (84/278) animals positive for haemoparasitic infections. All the samples found positive by microscopy were also recorded positive by PCR. Thus the study revealed prevalence of Babesia bigemina, Anaplasma marginale and Theileria annulata to be 9.7, 16.5 and 0.7% respectively. The metrological and epidemiological variables made inroads for the propagation of vector ticks and occurrence of infection. Haematological alterations predominantly related to decrease in haemoglobin, red blood cell count and packed cell volume were evident in diseased animals and collaterally affected the productivity. Further the genetic characterization of Babesia bigemina. (MN566925.1, MN567603, MN566924.1), Anaplasma marginale. (MH733242.1, MN567602.1) and Theileria annulata (MT113479) provided a representative data of the isolates circulating in the region and their proximity with available sequences across the world. CONCLUSIONS: Despite holding much significance to the animal sector, comprehensive disease mapping has yet not been undertaken in several parts of India. The present study provides a blue print of disease mapping, epidemiological correlations and genomic diversity of Babesia bigemina, Anaplasma marginale and Theileria annulata circulating in the region.

The future of Indian students who return as 'foreign medical graduates' (FMG) after training in certain countries is often uncertain. We collected data from newspapers, government resources and agencies involved in handling this issue. We analysed the current status of medical education in India, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and some neighbouring countries. Of approximately 1.4 million (14 lakh) students taking the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), about 5.8% get admission in medical colleges. There are about 554 medical colleges in India with 82 550 MBBS seats, 51.9% seats belong to the government quota. Parents who send their children to a foreign country to do medicine spend ₹1.5 million (15 lakh) tò4 million (40 lakh) against an estimated annual income of ₹1.2 million (12 lakh) and the child spends 4-6 years in a foreign country. Of 38 150 FMGs who took the examinations conducted by the National Board of Examinations from 2015 to 2018, 18.9% passed the FMG examination mandatory for registration to practise medicine in India. The National Medical Commission is trying to solve this issue by removing the age bar for entry to MBBS and recommending lowering of fees for MBBS in government quota. Seeking graduation in medical colleges outside India may not be advisable for those from the middle/ low-income group of India.

Rainfed maize production in the hilly ecosystem of Northeastern Himalayas often suffers from moisture and soil acidity induced abiotic stresses. The present study measured evapotranspiration loss (ETc) of maize crop under controlled condition (pot experiment) of water deficit (W25-25 % and W50-50 % of field capacity soil moistures) and well watered (W100 = 100 % of field capacity (FC)) regimes in strong acid soils (pH = 4.3) of the Northeastern Himalayan Region of India. The response of soil ameliorants (lime) and phosphorus (P) nutrition under differential water regimes on ETc losses and water use efficiency was also studied. The measured seasonal ETc loss varied from 124.3 to 270.9 mm across treatment combinations. Imposition of water deficit stress resulted in significant (p < 0.05) reduction (by 33-50 %) of seasonal ETc losses but was at the cost of delay in tasseling to silking, 47-65 % reduction in dry matter accumulation (DMA), 12-22 days shortening of grain formation period, and complete kernel abortion. Liming @ 4 t ha-1 significantly (p < 0.05) increased ETc losses and DMA across water regimes but the magnitude of increase was higher in severely water deficit (W25) regime. Unlike lime, P nutrition improved DMA only in well-watered regimes (W100) while seasonal ETc loss was unaffected. Vegetative stage (tillering to tasseling) contributed the maximum ETc losses while weekly crop ETc loss was estimated highest during 11th-14th week after sowing (coincided with blistering stage) and then declined. Water use efficiency estimated from dry matter produced per unit ETc losses and irrigation water used varied from 4.33 to 9.43 g dry matter kg-1 water and 4.21 to 8.56 g dry matter kg-1, respectively. Among the input factors (water, P, and lime), water regime most strongly influenced the ETc loss, growth duration, grain formation, and water use efficiency of maize.

AIM: To examine how the location where reading takes place and the availability of prior images can affect performance in breast test-set reading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under optimized viewing conditions, 10 expert screen readers each interpreted a reader-specific set of images containing 200 mammographic cases. Readers, randomly divided into two groups read images under one of two pairs of conditions: clinical read with prior images and laboratory read with prior images; laboratory read with prior images and laboratory read without prior images. Region-of-interest (ROI) figure-of-merit (FOM) was analysed using JAFROC software. Breast side-specific sensitivity and specificity were tested using Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank tests. Agreement between pairs of readings was measured using Kendall's coefficient of concordance. RESULTS: Group performances between test-set readings demonstrated similar ROI FOMs, sensitivity and specificity median values, and acceptable levels of agreement between pairs of readings were shown (W = 0.75-0.79, p < 0.001) for both pairs of reading conditions. On an individual reader level, two readers demonstrated significant decreases (p < 0.05) in ROI FOMs when prior images were unavailable. Reading location had an inconsistent impact on individual performance. CONCLUSION: Reading location and availability of prior images did not significantly alter group performance.

We demonstrate a photodetector sensitive to both optical and x-ray picosecond pulses based on our in-house grown cadmium magnesium telluride (Cd,Mg)Te single crystal. Specifically, we developed In-doped Cd0.96Mg0.04Te material and discuss its femtosecond optical photoresponse, as well as the detector performance, such as <100-pA dark current and up to 0.22-mA/W responsivity for 780-nm wavelength optical radiation. The detector exposed to Ti fluorescence (K alpha) x-ray pulses at 4.5 keV, generated by a free-electron laser beam with the central energy of 9.8 keV and <100 fs pulse width, exhibited readout-electronics-limited 200-ps full-width-at-half-maximum photoresponse, demonstrating that it is suitable for coarse timing in free-electron laser x-ray/optical femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy applications.

The study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of maggot therapy in healing of cutaneous infected wound in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic Wistar rat. For live maggots, the sterilized eggs of Lucilia sericata were obtained from colonies established in laboratory. Diabetes model was established in 48 male Wister rat by intra-peritoneal injection of STZ at the dose of 60 mg/kg body-weight. Cutaneous wounds exposed with mixed colonies of bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were prepared in all rat. The animals equally divided in 4 groups with 12 rats each being presented as treatment group of control, antibiotic, maggot and maggot with antibiotic in combination. All treatments were done once and hold for 24 hours. Wound kinetics and bacterial bio burden were measured at weekly interval to till complete healing. Significant reduction in wound area with maximum contraction was found (>95%) in maggot treated group when compared to antibiotic treated (79%) and control (72%). In maggot as well as maggot and antibiotic in combination group showed early elimination of bacterial bio-burden 7.88±0.03log CFU/ml to 1.12±0.65log CFU/ml and 7.86±0.04) log CFU/ml to 1.54±0.52log CFU/ml respectively in three weeks of time. Early healing indication was also experienced on histomorphological examination of wounded tissue of maggot treated groups by early and better epithelialization, collagenation and neovascularization with complete healing of wound in three weeks in comparison to antibiotic and control respectively. However, the present study did not show any difference in healing of wound with use of maggot alone or in antibiotic combination. Live maggot of Lucilia sericata effectively lower bacterial bioburden and and accelerate healing of infected cutaneous wound in diabetic conditions.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) induces an acute infection of the central nervous system, the pathogenic mechanism of which is not fully understood. To investigate host response to JEV infection, 14-day-old mice were infected via the extraneural route, which resulted in encephalitis and death. Mice that received JEV immune splenocyte transfer were protected from extraneural JEV infection. Pathology and gene expression profiles were then compared in brains of mice that either succumbed to JEV infection or were protected from infection by JEV immune cell transfer. Mice undergoing progressive JEV infection had increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and signal transducers associated with the interferon (IFN) pathway. In contrast, mice receiving immune cell transfer had increased production of the Th2 cytokine IL-4, and of IL-10, with subdued expression of IFN-gamma. We observed IL-10 to be an important factor in determining clinical outcome in JEV infection. Data obtained by microarray analysis were further confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR. Together, these data suggest that JEV infection causes an unregulated inflammatory response that can be countered by the expression of immunomodulatory cytokines in mice that survive lethal infection.

RESUMO

We determine the statistics of the local tube width in F-actin solutions, beyond the usually reported mean value. Our experimental observations are explained by a segment fluid theory based on the binary collision approximation. In this systematic generalization of the standard mean-field approach, effective polymer segments interact via a potential representing the topological constraints. The analytically predicted universal tube width distribution with a stretched tail is in good agreement with the data.

BACKGROUND: While the cause of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unknown, evidence suggests certain environmental factors, such as well water drinking, herbicides, pesticides exposure and neurotoxins, may trigger the chain of oxidative reactions culminating in the death of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra to cause Parkinsonism. To investigate the possible impact of environmental risk factors for idiopathic PD, a case-control study was performed in the Eastern India. METHODS: During the period from January 1st, 2006 and December 10th, 2009, 175 PD patients (140 men, 35 women) and 350 non-Parkinson age-sex matched controls were included in the study. Subjects were given a structured neurological examination and completed an administered questionnaire which elicited detailed information on demographic data, pesticides, herbicides family history, occupation, dietary and smoking habits. RESULTS: The multivariate analysis revealed that family history of PD, pesticide exposure, exposure to toxins other than pesticides and herbicides, rural living and previous history of depression were associated with increased risk of PD, whereas, smoking appeared to be a protective factor. Well water drinking for at least five years, though a significant risk factor on univariate analysis (OR = 4.5, 95% CI = 2.1-9.9), could not be proved significant in multivariate analysis. Head trauma, vegetarian dietary habit, occupation involving physical exertion and exposure to domestic pets were not as significant risk factors. CONCLUSION: Results of our study support the hypothesis of multifactorial etiology of PD with environmental factors acting on a genetically susceptible host.

The fundamental ideas for a nonlocal density functional theory-capable of reliably capturing van der Waals interactions-were already conceived in the 1990s. In 2004, a seminal paper introduced the first practical nonlocal exchange-correlation functional called vdW-DF, which has become widely successful and laid the foundation for much further research. However, since then, the functional form of vdW-DF has remained unchanged. Several successful modifications paired the original functional with different (local) exchange functionals to improve performance, and the successor vdW-DF2 also updated one internal parameter. Bringing together different insights from almost 2 decades of development and testing, we present the next-generation nonlocal correlation functional called vdW-DF3, in which we change the functional form while staying true to the original design philosophy. Although many popular functionals show good performance around the binding separation of van der Waals complexes, they often result in significant errors at larger separations. With vdW-DF3, we address this problem by taking advantage of a recently uncovered and largely unconstrained degree of freedom within the vdW-DF framework that can be constrained through empirical input, making our functional semiempirical. For two different parameterizations, we benchmark vdW-DF3 against a large set of well-studied test cases and compare our results with the most popular functionals, finding good performance in general for a wide array of systems and a significant improvement in accuracy at larger separations. Finally, we discuss the achievable performance within the current vdW-DF framework, the flexibility in functional design offered by vdW-DF3, as well as possible future directions for nonlocal van der Waals density functional theory.

We consider the persistence phenomenon in advected passive scalar equation in one dimension. The velocity field is random with the v(k,omega)v(-k,-omega) approximately mid R:kmid R:;{-(2+alpha)} . In the presence of the nonlinearity the complete Green's function becomes G;{-1}=-iomega+Dk2+Sigma . We determine Sigma self-consistently from the correlation function which gives Sigma approximately k;{beta} , with beta=(1-alpha)2 . The effect of the nonlinear term in the equation in the O(;{2}) is to replace the diffusion term due to molecular viscosity by an effective term of the form Sigma_{0}k;{beta} . The stationary correlator for this system is [sech(T2)];{1beta} . Using the self-consistent theory we have determined the relation between beta and alpha . Finally, the independent interval approximation (IIA) method is used to determine the persistent exponent.

Oxidative stress is implicated as a major factor for nigral neuronal cell death. Metabolic failure in antioxidant mechanisms could hypothetically facilitate the chemical processes that lead to lipid peroxidation. To elucidate whether elevated lipid peroxidation rates might increase risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD), the Authors determined plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in 80 PD patients and 80 controls. There was a significant difference between the plasma MDA levels of PD patients and controls (7.48 +/- 1.55 vs 5.1 +/- 1.26 nmol/ml). Plasma MDA levels were inversely related to the age of the PD patients (r = -0.46; p < 0.01) and age of onset but in the control group, no such correlation was observed between the plasma MDA and age. However, there was no significant correlation between plasma MDA levels and the duration of disease, Hoehn and Yahr stages and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Thus, the results suggest that high plasma lipid peroxidation rates might contribute as a risk factor for PD in West Bengal.

Serum samples were collected from 254 yak (Poephagus grunniens, presently Bos grunniens) in different yak tracts of India. These samples were then screened by virus neutralisation test (VNT) and avidin-biotin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (AB-ELISA) to study the seroprevalence of antibodies against bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1). The overall seroprevalence in yak was found to be 41% (105) by VNT and AB-ELISA. The sex of the animal, whether it was on a farm or free-ranging and the location of the different yak tracts did not seem to have any effect on seroprevalence. However, seroprevalence was found to increase with the age of the animals, being highest in yak older than three years of age (49%). Yak generally share feeding, watering and grazing areas with other domestic and wild animals and this common ecological niche is thought to be a possible avenue of infection. This is the first time that the seroprevalence of antibodies against BHV-1 has been studied in yak in India.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) was devised as a systematic method to assess the extent of early ischemic change on noncontrast CT (NCCT) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Our aim was to automate ASPECTS to objectively score NCCT of AIS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected NCCT images with a 5-mm thickness of 257 patients with acute ischemic stroke (<8 hours from onset to scans) followed by a diffusion-weighted imaging acquisition within 1 hour. Expert ASPECTS readings on DWI were used as ground truth. Texture features were extracted from each ASPECTS region of the 157 training patient images to train a random forest classifier. The unseen 100 testing patient images were used to evaluate the performance of the trained classifier. Statistical analyses on the total ASPECTS and region-level ASPECTS were conducted. RESULTS: For the total ASPECTS of the unseen 100 patients, the intraclass correlation coefficient between the automated ASPECTS method and DWI ASPECTS scores of expert readings was 0.76 (95% confidence interval, 0.67-0.83) and the mean ASPECTS difference in the Bland-Altman plot was 0.3 (limits of agreement, -3.3, 2.6). Individual ASPECTS region-level analysis showed that our method yielded κ = 0.60, sensitivity of 66.2%, specificity of 91.8%, and area under curve of 0.79 for 100 × 10 ASPECTS regions. Additionally, when ASPECTS was dichotomized (>4 and ≤4), κ = 0.78, sensitivity of 97.8%, specificity of 80%, and area under the curve of 0.89 were generated between the proposed method and expert readings on DWI. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed automated ASPECTS scoring approach shows reasonable ability to determine ASPECTS on NCCT images in patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke.

In 1996 Swensson published an observer model that predicted receiver operating characteristic (ROC), localization ROC (LROC), free-response ROC (FROC) and alternative FROC (AFROC) curves, thereby achieving "unification" of different observer performance paradigms. More recently a model termed initial detection and candidate analysis (IDCA) has been proposed for fitting computer aided detection (CAD) generated FROC data, and recently a search model for human observer FROC data has been proposed. The purpose of this study was to derive IDCA and the search model based expressions for operating characteristics, and to compare the predictions to the Swensson model. For three out of four mammography CAD data sets all models yielded good fits in the high-confidence region, i.e., near the lower end of the plots. The search model and IDCA tended to better fit the data in the low-confidence region, i.e., near the upper end of the plots, particularly for FROC curves for which the Swensson model predictions departed markedly from the data. For one data set none of the models yielded satisfactory fits. A unique characteristic of search model and IDCA predicted operating characteristics is that the operating point is not allowed to move continuously to the lowest confidence limit of the corresponding Swensson model curves. This prediction is actually observed in the CAD raw data and it is the primary reason for the poor FROC fits of the Swensson model in the low-confidence region.

Topological states of matter are at the root of some of the most fascinating phenomena in condensed matter physics. Here we argue that skyrmions in the pseudo-spin space related to an emerging SU(2) symmetry enlighten many mysterious properties of the pseudogap phase in under-doped cuprates. We detail the role of the SU(2) symmetry in controlling the phase diagram of the cuprates, in particular how a cascade of phase transitions explains the arising of the pseudogap, superconducting and charge modulation phases seen at low temperature. We specify the structure of the charge modulations inside the vortex core below T c, as well as in a wide temperature region above T c, which is a signature of the skyrmion topological structure. We argue that the underlying SU(2) symmetry is the main structure controlling the emergent complexity of excitations at the pseudogap scale T *. The theory yields a gapping of a large part of the anti-nodal region of the Brillouin zone, along with q = 0 phase transitions, of both nematic and loop currents characters.

Delayed wound healing due to extraneous bacterial contamination, antibacterial resistance and other associated factors are of great concern in dealing patients having chronically infected wound. Medicinal properties of certain maggots of Calliphoridae family are known for its effective wound debridement therapy. The objective of the study was to evaluate the wound healing potential of maggots of Lucilia sericata in an experimentally infected cutaneous wound model in Wistar rat. The study was carried out by using male Wistar rats (n=48) by creating excisional wounds and later contaminated with mixed population of gram positive and gram-negative bacteria. Animals were divided randomly in to four groups with 12 individuals each, being denominated as control, antibiotic treated, maggot treated, and antibiotic plus maggot combination treated group. Ten pre-sterilized maggots were applied per centimetre square wound bed for 24 hours. Different wound kinetics in L. sericata maggot treated wounds revealed significant reduction in wound area with maximum contraction, early elimination of bacterial bioburden as compared to group of infected control and group of rats receiving only antibiotic treatment. The histopathological examination of wounded tissue of maggot treated groups showed early and better epithelialization, collagenation and neovascularization with complete healing of wound in two weeks. The maggot effects on healing when used singly or in combination with antibiotic were recorded to be similar. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that the maggots of L. sericata possesses a definite antibacterial action along with removal of dead tissues and effectively reduced the bacterial bio-burden in infected wound and induced wound healing quickly.

We extend the definition of a global order parameter to the case of a critical system confined between two infinite parallel plates separated by a distance L. For a quench to the critical point we study the persistence property of the global order parameter and show that there is a crossover behavior characterized by a nonuniversal exponent which depends on the ratio of the system size to a dynamic length scale.

We have investigated the random walk problem in a finite system and studied the crossover induced in the persistence probability by the system size. Analytical and numerical work show that the scaling function is an exponentially decaying function. We consider two cases of trapping, one by a box of size L and the other by a harmonic trap. Our analytic calculations are supported by numerical works. We also present numerical results on the harmonically trapped randomly accelerated particle and the randomly accelerated particle with viscous drag.

Phenolic extract of leaves of Basilicum polystachyon (L) Moench was tested for in vitro antimicrobial activity against five bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus leuteus) and three fungi (Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger, Helminthosporium oryzae). Efficacy of organic solvents, methanol and ethanol, as agents for extraction was compared with acidic water (2M; HCl). High-pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) data showed that acidic extraction (2M; HCl) resulted in higher yield of caffeic acid (0.437 mg g(-1)) and rosmarinic acid (0.919 mg g(-1)). Acidic extract showed high activity against Gram (+) ve bacteria, but was less active against Gram (-) ve bacteria. Amongst the tested fungi, maximum activity was exhibited against Aspergillus niger. This is the first report on the phenolic constituents and bioactivity of B. polystachyon.
