OBJECTIVE: The sympathetic-parasympathetic (or axo-axonal) interaction mechanism mediated that neurogenic relaxation, which was dependent on norepinephrine (NE) releases from sympathetic nerve terminal and acts on ß2-adrenoceptor of parasympathetic nerve terminal, has been reported. As NE is a weak ß2-adrenoceptor agonist, there is a possibility that synaptic NE is converted to epinephrine by phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT) and then acts on the ß2-adrenoceptors to induce neurogenic vasodilation. METHODS: Blood vessel myography technique was used to measure relaxation and contraction responses of isolated basilar arterial rings of rats. RESULTS: Nicotine-induced relaxation was sensitive to propranolol, guanethidine (an adrenergic neuronal blocker), and Nω-nitro-l-arginine. Nicotine- and exogenous NE-induced vasorelaxation was partially inhibited by LY-78335 (a PNMT inhibitor), and transmural nerve stimulation depolarized the nitrergic nerve terminal directly and was not inhibited by LY-78335; it then induced the release of nitric oxide (NO). Epinephrine-induced vasorelaxation was not affected by LY-78335. However, these vasorelaxations were completely inhibited by atenolol (a ß1-adrenoceptor antagonist) combined with ICI-118,551 (a ß2-adrenoceptor antagonist). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that NE may be methylated by PNMT to form epinephrine and cause the release of NO and vasodilation. These results provide further evidence supporting the physiological significance of the axo-axonal interaction mechanism in regulating brainstem vascular tone.

Infant-type hemispheric glioma (IHG) is a rare pediatric brain tumor with variable response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Molecular insights into IHG can be useful in identifying potentially active targeted therapy. A male fetus was found to have congenital hydrocephalus at the gestational age of 37 weeks. Fetal MRI showed a 2.6 × 2.0-cm tumor located at the frontal horn of the left lateral ventricle, involving the left basal nuclei and thalamus. Tumor biopsy at the age of 2 days revealed an IHG consisting of spindle tumor cells with strong expression of GFAP and ALK. Targeted RNA sequencing detected a novel fusion gene of SOX5::ALK. After initial chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, carboplatin, and etoposide for 2 cycles, the tumor size progressed markedly and the patient underwent a subtotal resection of brain tumor followed by treatment with lorlatinib, an ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor with central nervous system (CNS) activity. After 3 months of treatment, reduction of tumor size was observed. After 14 months of treatment, partial response was achieved, and the infant had normal growth and development. In conclusion, we identified a case of congenital IHG with a novel SOX5::ALK fusion that had progressed after chemotherapy and showed partial response and clinical benefit after treatment with the CNS-active ALK inhibitor lorlatinib.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors were found to be dysfunctional in hypertensive rats. Methyl palmitate (MP) has been shown to diminish the nicotine-induced increase in blood flow in the brainstem. The aim of this study was to determine how MP modulated NMDA-induced increased regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in normotensive (WKY), spontaneously hypertensive (SHR), and renovascular hypertensive (RHR) rats. The increase in rCBF after the topical application of experimental drugs was measured using laser Doppler flowmetry. Topical NMDA application induced an MK-801-sensitive increase in rCBF in anesthetized WKY rats, which was inhibited by MP pretreatments. This inhibition was prevented by pretreatment with chelerythrine (a PKC inhibitor). The NMDA-induced increase in rCBF was also inhibited by the PKC activator in a concentration-dependent manner. Neither MP nor MK-801 affected the increase in rCBF induced by the topical application of acetylcholine or sodium nitroprusside. Topical application of MP to the parietal cortex of SHRs, on the other hand, increased basal rCBF slightly but significantly. MP enhanced the NMDA-induced increase in rCBF in SHRs and RHRs. These results suggested that MP had a dual effect on the modulation of rCBF. MP appears to play a significant physiological role in CBF regulation.

Primary central nervous system germ cell tumors (CNS GCTs) are part of the GCTs in children and adults. This tumor entity presents with geographic variation, age, and sex predilection. There are two age peaks of incidence distribution at the first few months of life and in adolescence. CNS GCTs are heterogeneous in histopathological subtypes, locations, and tumor marker (AFP, ß-hCG) secretions. In the WHO CNS tumor classification, GCTS are classified as germinoma and nongerminomatous GCT (NGGCT) with different subtypes (including teratoma). Excluding mature teratoma, the remaining NGGCTs are malignant (NGMGCT). In teratoma, growing teratoma syndrome and teratoma with somatic-type malignancy should be highlighted. The common intracranial locations are pineal region, neurohypophysis (NH), bifocal pineal-NH, basal ganglia, and cerebral ventricle. Above 50% of intracranial GCTs (IGCTs) present obstructive hydrocephalus. Spinal tumors are rare. Age, locations, hydrocephalus, and serum/CSF titer of ß-hCG correlate with clinical manifestations. Delayed diagnosis is common in tumors arising in neurohypophysis, bifocal, and basal ganglia resulting in the increasing of physical dysfunction and hormonal deficits. Staging work-up includes CSF cytology for tumor cells and contrast-enhanced MRI of brain and spine for macroscopic metastasis before treatment commences. The therapeutic approach of CNS GCTs integrates locations, histopathology, staging, tumor marker level, and therapeutic classification. Treatment strategies include surgical biopsy/excision, chemotherapy, radiotherapy (single or combination). Secreting tumors with consistent imaging may not require histopathological diagnosis. Primary germinomas are highly radiosensitive and the therapeutic aim is to maintain high survival rate using optimal radiotherapy regimen with/without chemotherapy combination. Primary NGNGCTs are less radiosensitive. The therapeutic aim is to increase survival utilizing more intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The negative prognostic factors are residue disease at the end of treatment and serum or CSF AFP level >1000 ng/mL at diagnosis. In refractory or recurrent NMGGCTs, besides high-dose chemotherapy, new therapy is necessary. Molecular profiling and analysis help for translational research. Survivors of pediatric brain tumors frequently experience cancer-related cognitive dysfunction, physical disability, pituitary hormone deficiency, and other CNS complications after cranial radiotherapy. Continuous surveillance and assessment may lead to improvements in treatment protocols, transdisciplinary interventions, after-treatment rehabilitation, and quality of life.

The present study aimed to investigate the acute effects and the mechanism of ketamine on nicotine-induced relaxation of the corpus cavernosum (CC) in mice. This study measured the intra-cavernosal pressure (ICP) of male C57BL/6 mice and the CC muscle activities using an organ bath wire myograph. Various drugs were used to investigate the mechanism of ketamine on nicotine-induced relaxation. Direct ketamine injection into the major pelvic ganglion (MPG) inhibited MPG-induced increases in ICP. D-serine/L-glutamate-induced relaxation of the CC was inhibited by MK-801 (N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor inhibitor), and nicotine-induced relaxation was enhanced by D-serine/L-glutamate. NMDA had no effect on CC relaxation. Nicotine-induced relaxation of the CC was suppressed by mecamylamine (a non-selective nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist), lidocaine, guanethidine (an adrenergic neuronal blocker), Nw-nitro-L-arginine (a non-selective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor), MK-801, and ketamine. This relaxation was almost completely inhibited in CC strips pretreated with 6-hydroxydopamine (a neurotoxic synthetic organic compound). Ketamine inhibited cavernosal nerve neurotransmission via direct action on the ganglion and impaired nicotine-induced CC relaxation. The relaxation of the CC was dependent on the interaction of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, which may be mediated by the NMDA receptor.

The phosphatase cell division cycle 25B (Cdc25B) regulates cell cycle progression. Increased Cdc25B levels are often detected in cancer cell lines and human cancers and have been implicated in contributing to tumor growth, potentially by providing cancer cells with the ability to bypass checkpoint controls. However, the specific mechanism by which increased Cdc25B impacts tumor progression is not clear. Here we analyzed The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and found that patients with high CDC25B expression had the expected poor survival. However, we also found that high CDC25B expression had a p53-dependent tumor suppressive effect in lung cancer and possibly several other cancer types. Looking in more detail at the tumor suppressive function of Cdc25B, we found that increased Cdc25B expression caused inhibition of cell growth in human normal fibroblasts. This effect was not due to alteration of specific cell cycle stage or inhibition of apoptosis, nor by induction of the DNA damage response. Instead, increased CDC25B expression led cells into senescence. We also found that p53 was required to induce senescence, which might explain the p53-dependent tumor suppressive function of Cdc25B. Mechanistically, we found that the Cdc25B phosphatase activity was required to induce senescence. Further analysis also found that Cdc25B stabilized p53 through binding and dephosphorylating p53. Together, this study identified a tumor-suppressive function of Cdc25B that is mediated through a p53-dependent senescence pathway.

Approaching single-crystal-like morphology has always been important in driving materials toward their optimal properties. With only orientational order, liquid crystal (LC) materials require dual-axis orientational control to optimize their structural order in the bulk phase. However, current external guiding fields such as electrical, magnetic, and mechanical guiding fields are less effective in aligning amphiphilic LCs. In this study, water is developed as an excellent structural stabilizer and orientation-directing agent of an amphiphilic discotic molecule (AD) in the water-induced self-assembly (WISA) process. Thermal analysis and structural characterization results show that water increases the stability and domain sizes of the hexagonal columnar (Colh) phase of the AD by co-assembling with the ADs to form bulk artificial water channels (AWCs). Moreover, through control over the nucleation conditions (degree of supercooling and location of nucleation), dual-axis alignment in both the planar and vertical growth of the AWCs is achieved by applying water as the guiding field in the directional WISA. With precise control over the hierarchical structures, the bulk AWC array of the AD delivers excellent salt rejection properties and water permeability. Considering that all the amphiphilic LCs have hydrophilic segments, these new roles of water in the WISA process could launch the further development of functional amphiphilic LCs by providing a dynamic interaction and a readily available guiding field.

Tibialis anterior (TA) muscle has frequently been used for scientific experiments, particularly for muscle contractile assays, because of its anatomical advantages. However, classical evaluation methods for the TA muscle, such as EMG and force transducer, require experimental skills to acquire reliable results. Furthermore, because sacrificing experimental animals is usually indispensable for both methods, sequential observations cannot be performed. Therefore, developing a simple, objective, and animal friendly evaluation system was warranted. In this article, we introduce a novel, simple, and noninvasive in vivo evaluation method for the TA muscle called the toe-lift test (TLT), which is not only easy to perform but also capable of detecting contractile strength precisely. Because the TLT does not require experimental animal sacrifice, performing assessments over time, such as in sequential observation, is possible. This novel method represents a solution to the need for a simple, noninvasive, and effective method for TA muscle contractile evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Epileptic surgery is the potentially curative treatment for children with refractory seizures. The study aimed to quantify and analyze high frequency oscillation (HFO) ripples and interictal epileptiform discharges (EDs) in intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) between malformation of cortical dysplasia (MCD) and non-MCD children with MRI-lesional focal epilepsy, and evaluate of seizure outcomes after epileptic surgery. METHODS: The intraoperative ECoG was performed before and after lesionectomy. Quantifications of HFO ripples and interictal EDs of ECoG by frequency, amplitude, and foci of intraoperative ECoG were performed based on electrode location, and the characteristics of ECoG recordings were analyzed in each patient based on their histopathology. Seizure outcome after surgery according to their quantitative ECoG findings was analyzed. RESULTS: Frequency of EDs and HFO ripple rates in preresection ECoG were significantly higher in children with MCD compared with non-MCD (p = 0.018 and p = 0.002, respectively). Higher frequencies of EDs and ripple rates in preresection ECoG were observed in residual seizures than in seizure-free children (p = 0.045 and p = 0.005, respectively). Clinically, children with residual seizures after surgery were significantly younger at the onset, had a trend of higher seizure frequency and higher spike frequency of presurgical videoEEG. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that quantification of intraoperative ECoG predicted seizure outcomes and reflected different ED pattern and frequencies between MCD and non-dysplastic histopathology among children who underwent resective epileptic surgery. The results of our study were encouraging and indicated that intraoperative ECoG improved the outcomes of surgery in children with epilepsy.

Perivascular sympathetic-sensory interactions have been shown to regulate calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-mediated vasodilation in rats. We investigated whether perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) modulates the neurogenic vasorelaxation of isolated rat mesenteric arteries. Mesenteric arterial rings were prepared with or without PVAT (PVAT+ or PVAT-) and with either an intact or denuded endothelium (EC+ or EC-). The results of myography analysis revealed that vasocontraction to phenylephrine was highest in EC-PVAT-, lowest in EC+PVAT+, and intermediate in EC-PVAT+ and EC+PVAT-. Transmural nerve stimulation (TNS) induced the tetrodotoxin-sensitive relaxation of the phenylephrine-precontracted mesenteric arteries. However, nicotine induced minor relaxation in EC-PVAT+, whereas vasorelaxation was significantly enhanced in EC-PVAT-. Nicotine-induced vasorelaxation was insensitive to propranolol and also significantly lower in sympathetically-denervated and guanethidine-treated EC-PVAT-, whereas TNS-induced vasorelaxation persisted. In EC-PVAT- depleted of CGRP via capsaicin, nicotine- and TNS-induced vasorelaxation was almost absent. Lowering the pH of Krebs' solution using HCl led to pH-dependent vasorelaxation that was sensitive to CGRP8-37. Furthermore, nicotine-induced relaxation of EC-PVAT-, which was not affected by leptin, was blocked by methyl palmitate. Methyl palmitate did not affect TNS- or HCl-induced vasorelaxation. These results suggest that PVAT plays a modulatory role in regulating sympathetic-sensory interaction-mediated CGRPergic vasorelaxation via the release of methyl palmitate.

Previous studies have demonstrated that nicotine can induce relaxation of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). However, whether this relaxation is associated with the activity of sensory calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) nerves and whether this is modulated by hydrogen protons (H), facilitating the release of CGRP from sensory CGRPergic nerve terminals in the MCA, remains unclear. In this study, we examined the role of H in the modulation of neurogenic vasomotor responses in the rat-isolated endothelium-denuded MCA. Wire myography was used to measure vasoreactivity and indicated that nicotine-induced relaxation was sensitive to tetrodotoxin and lidocaine and drastically reduced levels of guanethidine (an adrenergic neuronal blocker), N-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA), CGRP8-37, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)6-28, capsaicin, capsazepine (a transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 inhibitor), and tetraethylammonium. However, this nicotine-induced relaxation was not sensitive to propranolol. Lowering the pH of the buffer solution with HCl caused pH-dependent vasorelaxation and deceased intracellular pH in the MCA rings, which was sensitive to L-NNA, CGRP8-37, VIP6-28, capsazepine, 4-aminopyridine (a voltage-gated potassium channel antagonist), and paxilline (a large conductance Ca-activated K channel antagonist). However, HCl-induced relaxation was not inhibited by glibenclamide (an ATP-sensitive K channel blocker). These results suggested that electrical and chemical activation of cerebral perivascular adrenergic nerves led to the release of H, which then facilitated the release of NO, VIP, and CGRP, resulting in vasorelaxation. Lowering the pH of the buffer solution caused potassium channels of vascular smooth muscle cells and perivascular nerves to open. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that H may act as a modulator on MCA perivascular nerves and/or smooth muscles.

AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate whether ketamine could relieve the social stress (SS)-related bladder dysfunction in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The FVB mice were randomly assigned to either undergo SS exposure for 60 minutes per day on seven consecutive days for 4 weeks (SS1) or control without SS (SS0). The SS0 were then allocated to single or no injection of ketamine (SS0K1 and SS0K0). In the group of SS1, the SS1 mice were allocated to receive single injection of saline (SS1K0), single dose (SS1K1) or five daily dose of (SS1K5) ketamine injection (25 mg/kg/day/ip) since day 22. In vivo cystometry and tissue bath wire myography were performed on day 29. Serum and urine level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: In mice without social stress exposure, ketamine administration did not significantly affect voiding frequency (P > .05). SS1 K0 , SS1 K1, and SS1 K5 had significantly lower voiding frequency than that of control (SS1 K0 ) (each n = 15, P < .05). Ketamine administration reversed the trend of decreased voiding frequency in SS1 mice. Stressed mice had significant higher serum level of BDNF that reduced by short-term ketamine. Stressed mice had detrusor overactivity and impaired detrusor contractility which were not reversed by short-term ketamine. CONCLUSIONS: Social stress leads to elevated serum BDNF, infrequent voiding, detrusor overactivity, and impaired contractility. Short-term administration of ketamine may improve SS-related infrequent voiding and elevated serum BDNF level. However, ketamine did not improve SS-related bladder dysfunction on urodynamic and myography studies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of satellite cells to muscular atrophies which possess different pathological characteristics and which were induced by distinct damages. Right lower limbs of rats were exposed to denervation or disuse and later its tibialis anterior (TA) or soleus (SOL) muscles were analyzed. After confirming their functional impairments indicated by common but distinct pathological and electrophysiological characteristics, the quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis of Pax7 and Pax3 expressions and the number of Pax7+ve and Pax3+ve cells were analyzed sequentially at day 0, day 7, and day 14. TA muscles of both denervation- and disuse-induced atrophy models showed persisted low level of Pax7 expression from day 7 (0.91 ± 0.23 and 0.31 ± 0.07, P = 0.06, n = 6) through day 14 (1.09 ± 0.15 and 0.4 ± 0.09 [P < 0.05]). On the other hand, significant elevations were observed in Pax3 expression in both atrophy models (2.73 ± 0.46 and 2.75 ± 0.26 [P < 0.05]) at day 7. Similar to TA muscle, resembled pattern of Pax7 and Pax3 expression changes were observed between the SOL muscles of denervation- and disused-atrophy models. These trends were further confirmed by the changes in Pax7+ve and Pax3+ve cell numbers of TA and SOL muscles in both atrophy models. Despite the distinct pathological findings, similar patterns in the changes of Pax3 and Pax7 expressions and the changes of Pax7+ve and Pax3+ve cell numbers were observed between the denervation- and disuse-induced atrophy models and this commonality was admitted among the muscle type. Therefore, we claim that the muscle regeneration orchestrated by satellite cells was governed by the muscle type in which satellite cells reside.

Spinal sarcopenia is a complex and multifactorial disorder associated with a loss of strength, increased frailty, and increased risks of fractures and falls. In addition, spinal sarcopenia has been associated with lumbar spine disorders and osteoporosis, which renders making decisions on treatment modalities difficult. Patients with spinal sarcopenia typically exhibit lower cumulative survival, a higher risk of in-hospital complications, prolonged hospital stays, higher postoperative costs, and higher rates of blood transfusion after thoracolumbar spine surgery. Several studies have focused on the relationships between spinal sarcopenia, appendicular muscle mass, and bone-related problems-such as osteoporotic fractures and low bone mineral density-and malnutrition and vitamin D deficiency. Although several techniques are available for measuring sarcopenia, each of them has its advantages and shortcomings. For treating spinal sarcopenia, nutrition, physical therapy, and medication have been proven to be effective; regenerative therapeutic options seem to be promising owing to their repair and regeneration potential. Therefore, in this narrative review, we summarize the characteristics, detection methodologies, and treatment options for spinal sarcopenia, as well as its role in spinal disorders.

Satellite cells, a population of skeletal muscular stem cells, are generally recognized as the main and, possibly, the sole source of postnatal muscle regeneration. Previous studies have revealed the potential of low-level laser (LLL) irradiation in promoting satellite cell proliferation, which, thereby, boosts the recovery of skeletal muscle from atrophy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the beneficial effect of LLL on disuse-induced atrophy. The optimal irradiation condition of LLL (808 nm) enhancing the proliferation of Pax7+ve cells, isolated from tibialis anterior (TA) muscle, was examined and applied on TA muscle of disuse-induced atrophy model of the rats accordingly. Healthy rats were used as the control. On one hand, transiently, LLL was able to postpone the progression of atrophy for 1 week through a reduction of apoptosis in Pax7-veMyoD+ve (myocyte) population. Simultaneously, a significant enhancement was observed in Pax7+veMyoD+ve population; however, most of the increased cells underwent apoptosis since the second week, which suggested an impaired maturation of the population. On the other hand, in normal control rats with LLL irradiation, a significant increase in Pax7+veMyoD+ve cells and a significant decrease of apoptosis were observed. As a result, a strengthened muscle contraction was observed. Our data showed the capability of LLL in postponing the progression of disuse-induced atrophy for the first time. Furthermore, the result of normal rats with LLL irradiation showed the effectiveness of LLL to strengthen muscle contraction in healthy control.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To assess the long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of normal-term neonates who were accidentally found to exhibit subependymal pseudocysts (SEPCs), frontal horn cysts, or choroid plexus cysts through cranial ultrasound (CUS) examination in a neonatal health examination. METHODS: In total, 5569 neonates received CUS examination as an item in a health examination during the first week of birth between 2002 and 2012. Among them, 5147 infants fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The participants were aged between 5 and 15 years at the time when the data were collected. We retrospectively collected these data and interpreted their statistical significance by using one-way analysis of variance, Chi-square test with Yate's correction and odds ratios. RESULTS: The presence of SEPCs was significantly correlated with developmental delay and developmental disability, particularly with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). The risk of ADHD or ASD was significantly higher in participants with multiple SEPCs, among whom the odds ratios for ADHD and ASD were 6.50 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.27-18.64) and 28.54 (95% CI = 5.98-136.36), respectively, higher than those for the total study population. CONCLUSION: Our data revealed multiple SEPCs in normal-term neonates as a risk factor for neurobehavioral outcome, particularly in ADHD and ASD. Simultaneously, the utility of CUS examination as a health examination item for neonates was confirmed.

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) that has significantly improved survival, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients may be potential organ donors to HIV-positive recipients in a few countries. Organ shortage remains a challenge for organ transplantation in Taiwan, where organ donation by HIV-positive patients remains prohibited by law. METHODS: We assessed the willingness of organ donation (should they be pronounced brain dead, and the ban on HIV-positive organ donation be lifted) among HIV-positive patients who received regular HIV care at a university hospital in a cross-sectional survey between May and August 2015 with the use of an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire interview. RESULTS: Of the 1010 participants, 93.7% were receiving cART with the latest mean CD4 count and plasma HIV RNA load of 587 cells/mm3 and 2.73 log10 copies/mL, respectively. Overall, 71.9% were willing to donate organs. In multivariate analysis, factors associated with willingness to donate organs included college or graduate school diploma (odds ratio [OR] 1.571, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.166-2.191), registered willingness to donate in the National Health Insurance system (OR 9.430, 95% CI 1.269-70.051), and knowledge of the information on HIV-positive deceased donors (HIVDD) (OR 1.673, 95% CI 1.073-2.608). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that a significant proportion (71.9%) of HIV-positive Taiwanese patients were willing to donate their organs. The willingness was associated with a higher education level, prior registered willingness to donate organs, and awareness of HIVDD.

This paper proposes a 2x2 MIMO OFDM Radio-over-Fiber scheme based on optical subcarrier multiplexing and 60-GHz MIMO wireless transmission. We also schematically investigated the principle of optical subcarrier multiplexing, which is based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM). In our simulation result, combining two MIMO OFDM signals to drive DP-MZM gives rise to the PAPR augmentation of less than 0.4 dB, which mitigates nonlinear distortion. Moreover, we applied a Levin-Campello bit-loading algorithm to compensate for the uneven frequency responses in the V-band. The resulting system achieves OFDM signal rates of 61.5-Gbits/s with BER of 10(-3) over 25-km SMF transmission followed by 3-m wireless transmission.

RESUMO

We investigate the discovery potential of semileptonic hyperon decays in terms of searches of new physics at teraelectronvolt scales. These decays are controlled by a small SU(3)-flavor breaking parameter that allows for systematic expansions and accurate predictions in terms of a reduced dependence on hadronic form factors. We find that muonic modes are very sensitive to nonstandard scalar and tensor contributions and demonstrate that these could provide a powerful synergy with direct searches of new physics at the LHC.

BACKGROUND: The decision to treat children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) using antiseizure medications (ASM) is controversial. Our goal is to compare the effect of ASM treatment on the alteration of electroencephalographic (EEG) functional connectivity and power across four frequency bands in children with BECTS. METHODS: Children with BECTS with two-year follow-up were retrospectively divided into ASM versus non-ASM groups. The network properties of the EEGs as based on network-based statistic and graph theory were evaluated by the following indices: global efficiency, clustering coefficient, betweenness centrality, and nodal strength in four frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, and beta). EEG power including absolute power (AP) and relative power (RP) was analyzed in four frequency bands. RESULTS: In children with BECTS with ASM treatment, there was no significant change in EEG connectivity across all bands before and after two years of ASM. In children with BECTS without ASM treatment, there was a significant increase of global efficiency, clustering coefficient, and nodal strength but not the betweenness centrality in the delta band after two years of follow-up. A decrease in AP in the delta and theta bands and a decrease in RP in the theta band were found in the ASM group after two years of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that ASM may play a role in modulating the development of increasing overall brain connectivity and in downregulating overt synaptic activity, but not intrinsic focal connectivity, in the early years of BECTS. The changes in the EEG power indicate that ASM significantly normalized slow-wave band power.
