RESUMO

Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a heterogeneous group of glomerular disorders which includes two major phenotypes: minimal change disease (MCD) and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). MCD and FSGS are classic types of primary podocytopathies. We aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms in NS triggered by primary podocytopathies and evaluate diagnostic value of the selected proteomic signatures by analyzing blood proteome profiling. Totally, we recruited 90 participants in two cohorts. The first cohort was analyzed using label-free quantitative (LFQ) proteomics to discover differential expressed proteins and identify enriched biological process in NS which were further studied in relation to clinical markers of kidney injury. The second cohort was analyzed using parallel reaction monitoring-based quantitative proteomics to verify the data of LFQ proteomics and assess the diagnostic performance of the selected proteins using receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis. Several biological processes (such as immune response, cell adhesion, and response to hypoxia) were found to be associated with kidney injury during MCD and FSGS. Moreover, three proteins (CSF1, APOC3, and LDLR) had over 90% sensitivity and specificity in detecting adult NS triggered by primary podocytopathies. The identified biological processes may play a crucial role in MCD and FSGS pathogenesis. The three blood protein markers are promising for diagnosing adult NS triggered by primary podocytopathies.

BACKGROUND: Azvudine has been approved for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in China, and this meta-analysis aims to illustrate the safety of azvudine and its effectiveness in reducing mortality. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of science, Cochrane Library and the Epistemonikos COVID-19 Living Overview of Evidence database (L.OVE) were searched to aggregate currently published studies. Cochrane risk of bias tool and ROBINS-I tool were used to assess the risk of bias of randomized controlled study and cohort study respectively. Odds radios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CIs) were combined for dichotomous variables. Publication bias was assessed by Egger's test and funnel plots. RESULTS: A total of 184 articles were retrieved from the included databases and 17 studies were included into the final analysis. Pooled analysis showed that azvudine significantly reduced mortality risk in COVID-19 patients compared with controls (OR: 0.41, 95%CI 0.31-0.54, p < 0.001). Besides, either mild to moderate or severe COVID-19 patients could benefit from azvudine administration. There was no significant difference in the incidence of ICU admission (OR: 0.90, 95%CI 0.47-1.72, p = 0.74) and invasive ventilation (OR: 0.94, 95%CI 0.54-1.62, p = 0.82) between azvudine and control group. The incidence of adverse events was similar between azvudine and control (OR: 1.26, 95%CI 0.59-2.70, p = 0.56). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests that azvudine could reduce the mortality risk of COVID-19 patients, and the safety of administration is acceptable. OBJECTIVE: To find the relationship between N6-methyladenosine (m6A) genes and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). METHODS: Differential expression of m6A associated genes between normal and MDD samples was initially identified. Subsequent analysis was conducted on the functions of these genes and the pathways they may affect. A diagnostic model was constructed using the expression matrix of these differential genes, and visualized using a nomogram. Simultaneously, an unsupervised classification method was employed to classify all patients based on the expression of these m6A associated genes. Following this, common differential genes among different clusters were computed. By analyzing the functions of the common differential expressed genes among clusters, the role of m6A-related genes in the pathogenesis of MDD patients was elucidated. RESULTS: Differential expression was observed in ELAVL1 and YTHDC2 between the MDD group and the control group. ELAVL1 was associated with comorbid anxiety in MDD patients. A linear regression model based on these two genes could accurately predict whether patients in the GSE98793 dataset had MDD and could provide a net benefit for clinical decision-making. Based on the expression matrix of ELAVL1 and YTHDC2, MDD patients were classified into three clusters. Among these clusters, there were 937 common differential genes. Enrichment analysis was also performed on these genes. The ssGSEA method was applied to predict the content of 23 immune cells in the GSE98793 dataset samples. The relationship between these immune cells and ELAVL1, YTHDC2, and different clusters was analyzed. CONCLUSION: Among all the m6A genes, ELAVL1 and YTHDC2 are closely associated with MDD, ELAVL1 is related to comorbid anxiety in MDD. ELAVL1 and YTHDC2 have opposite associations with immune cells in MDD.

Wound infections and delayed complications after caesarean section surgical procedure to mothers would have a prevalence of discomfort, stress and dissatisfaction in the postpartum period. In this report, one-pot synthesis is used for the preparation of chitosan (CS)-based copper nanoparticles (nCu), which was used for the preparation of zinc oxide (ZnO) hydrogel as wound dressing materials after surgery. The antibacterial activity of (CS-nCu/ZnO) developed hydrogels was studied zone of inhibition, against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity of the CS-nCu/ZnO hydrogel demonstrated that nanoformulated hydrogel materials have provided excellent bactericidal action against clinically approved bacterial pathogens. The biocompatibility and in vitro wound healing potential of the developed wound closure materials were studied by MTT assay and wound scratch assay methods, respectively. The MTT assay and cell migration assay results demonstrated that CS-nCu/ZnO hydrogel material induces cell compatibility and effective cell proliferation ability. These findings suggest that the CS-nCu/ZnO hydrogel outperforms CS-ZnO in terms of wound healing and could be used as a wound closure material in caesarean section wound treatment.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of active layers in organic solar cells (OSCs) offers immense potential for optimizing performance through precise tailoring of each layer. However, achieving high-performance LbL OSCs with distinct solid additives in each layer remains challenging. In this study, we explore a novel approach that strategically incorporates different solid additives into specific layers of LbL devices. To this end, we introduce FeCl3 into the lower donor (D18) layer as a p-type dopant to enhance hole concentration and mobility. Concurrently, we incorporate the wide-bandgap conjugated polymer poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) (PFO) into the upper acceptor (L8-BO) layer to improve the morphology and prolong exciton lifetime. Unlike previous studies, our approach combines these two strategies to achieve higher and more balanced electron and hole mobility without affecting device open-circuit voltage, while also suppressing charge recombination. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the D18+FeCl3/L8-BO device increases to 18.12%, while the D18/L8-BO+PFO device attains a PCE of 18.79%. These values represent substantial improvements over the control device's PCE of 17.59%. Notably, when both FeCl3 and PFO are incorporated, the D18+FeCl3/L8-BO+PFO device achieves a remarkable PCE of 19.17%. In summary, our research results demonstrate the effectiveness of the layered solid additive strategy in improving OSC performance.

Buffalo meat is gaining popularity for its nutritional properties, such as its low fat and cholesterol content. However, it is often unsatisfactory to consumers due to its dark color and low tenderness. There is currently limited research on the regulatory mechanisms of buffalo meat quality. Xinglong buffalo are raised in the tropical Hainan region and are undergoing genetic improvement from draught to meat production. For the first time, we evaluated the meat quality traits of Xinglong buffalo using the longissimus dorsi muscle and compared them to Hainan cattle. Furthermore, we utilized a multi-omics approach combining transcriptomics and metabolomics to explore the underlying molecular mechanism regulating meat quality traits. We found that the Xinglong buffalo had significantly higher meat color redness but lower amino acid content and higher shear force compared to Hainan cattle. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified, with them being significantly enriched in nicotinic acid and nicotinamide metabolic and glycine, serine, and threonine metabolic pathways. The correlation analysis revealed that those genes and metabolites (such as: GAMT, GCSH, PNP, L-aspartic acid, NADP+, and glutathione) are significantly associated with meat color, tenderness, and amino acid content, indicating their potential as candidate genes and biological indicators associated with meat quality. This study contributes to the breed genetic improvement and enhancement of buffalo meat quality.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a highly infectious, zoonotic pathogen. Outer membrane protein A (OmpA) is an important virulence component of the outer membrane of P. multocida. OmpA mediates bacterial biofilm formation, eukaryotic cell infection, and immunomodulation. It is unclear how OmpA affects the host immune response. We estimated the role of OmpA in the pathogenesis of P. multocida by investigating the effect of OmpA on the immune cell transcriptome. Changes in the transcriptome of rat alveolar macrophages (NR8383) upon overexpression of P. multocida OmpA were demonstrated. A model cell line for stable transcription of OmpA was constructed by infecting NR8383 cells with OmpA-expressing lentivirus. RNA was extracted from cells and sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq platform. Key gene analysis of genes in the RNA-seq dataset were performed using various bioinformatics methods, such as gene ontology enrichment analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis, and Protein-Protein Interaction Analysis. Our findings revealed 1340 differentially expressed genes. Immune-related pathways that were significantly altered in rat alveolar macrophages under the effect of OmpA included focal adhesion, extracellular matrix and vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathways, antigen processing and presentation, nucleotide oligomerization domain-like receptor and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways, and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction. The key genes screened were Vegfa, Igf2r, Fabp5, P2rx1, C5ar1, Nedd4l, Gas6, Cxcl1, Pf4, Pdgfb, Thbs1, Col7a1, Vwf, Ccl9, and Arg1. Data of associated pathways and altered gene expression indicated that OmpA might cause the conversion of rat alveolar macrophages to M2-like. The related pathways and key genes can serve as a reference for OmpA of P. multitocida and host interaction mechanism studies.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the predictive value of intratumoral and peritumoral radiomics and radiomics nomogram for preoperative lymphovascular invasion (LVI) status and overall survival (OS) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: In total, 240 NSCLC patients from our institution were randomly divided into the training cohort (n = 145) and internal validation cohort (n = 95) with a ratio of 6:4, and 65 patients from the Cancer Imaging Archive were enrolled as the external validation cohort. We extracted 1217 CT-based radiomics features from the gross tumor volume (GTV) and gross tumor volume incorporating peritumoral 3, 6, and 9 mm regions (GPTV3, GPTV6, GPTV9). A radiomics nomogram based on clinical independent predictors and radiomics score (Radscore) of the best radiomics model was constructed. The correlation between factors and OS was evaluated with the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS: Compared with GTV, GPTV3, and GPTV6 radiomics models, GPTV9 radiomics model exhibited better prediction performance with the AUCs of 0.82, 0.75, and 0.67 in the training, internal validation, and external validation cohorts, respectively. In the clinical model, smoking and clinical stage were independent predictors. The nomogram incorporating independent predictors and GPTV9-Radscore was clinically useful, with the AUCs of 0.89, 0.83, and 0.66 in three cohorts. Pathological LVI, GPTV9-Radscore-predicted, and Nomoscore-predicted LVI were associated with poor OS (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: CT-based radiomics nomogram can predict LVI and OS in patients with NSCLC and may help in making personalized treatment strategies before surgery. KEY POINTS: • Compared with GTV, GPTV3, and GPTV6 radiomics models, GPTV9 radiomics model showed better prediction performance for LVI status in NSCLC. • The radiomics nomogram based on GPTV9 radiomics features and clinical independent predictors could effectively predict LVI status and OS in NSCLC and outperformed the clinical model. • The radiomics nomogram had a wider scope of clinical application.

Ovine brucellosis is a global zoonotic disease of sheep caused by Brucella melitensis, which inflicts a significant burden on human and animal health. Brucella suis strain S2 (B. suis S2) is a smooth live attenuated vaccine for the prevention of ovine brucellosis in China. However, no previous studies have assessed the immunogenicity of B. suis S2 vaccine after oral immunization in sheep. Here, we attempted to evaluate the ovine immune response over the course of B. suis S2 immunization and to identify in vivo predictors for vaccine development. Body temperature, serum Brucella antibodies, serum cytokines (IL-12p70 and interferon [IFN]-γ), and bacterial load in the mandibular lymph nodes (LN), superficial cervical LN, superficial inguinal LN, and spleen were investigated to determine the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. The abnormal body temperature of sheep occurred within 8 days post-infection (dpi). Brucella suis S2 persisted for a short time (< 21 dpi) in the mandibular LN. The highest level of IL-12p70 was observed at 9 dpi, whereas serum IFN-γ levels peaked at 12 dpi. Transcriptome analysis and quantitative reverse transcription PCR were performed to determine gene expression profiles in the mandibular LN of sheep. Antigen processing and presentation pathway was the dominant pathway related to the dataset. Our studies suggest that the immune response in ovine LN resembled type 1 immunity with the secretion of IL-12p70 and IFN-γ after B.suis S2 immunization and the vaccine may eliminate Brucella via stimulation of M1 macrophages through the course of Th cells.

In the field of recycling CO2, the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a typical example, and researchers have designed a variety of photocatalysts to improve the conversion rate of CO2 over the years. In this paper, two metal-oxygen clusters are designed and formulated as [Co3Zn(OH)6(SO4)]·4H2O (1) and [Ni3Zn(OH)6(SO4)]·4H2O (2). As for compound 1, the main structure is composed of {CoO6} octahedra connected by edge-sharing to form a two-dimensional layer, on which {ZnO4} and {SO4} tetrahedra are supported. More interestingly, compound 1 has outstanding photocatalytic activity, which is mainly attributed to the open-framework structure and the cobalt ions as active sites. Upon catalysis for eight hours, its maximum CO generation rate is 9982.13 µmol g-1 h-1, with a selectivity of 81.8%. Additionally, compound 1 takes on weak antiferromagnetic coupling due to Co(II) ions.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) is a prevalent and severe issue among ICU patients. Resistance training and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) intervention have demonstrated the potential to enhance muscle function in patients with sarcopenia and in older adults. The purpose of this study was to determine whether resistance training and/or HMB administration would improve physical function, muscle strength, and quality of life in medical ICU patients. METHODS: In this multicentre, four-arm, single-blind randomised control trial, a total of 112 adult patients with internal medical diagnoses admitted to the ICU were enrolled. These participants were then randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: the resistance training group received protocol-based multilevel resistance exercise, the HMB group received 3 g/day of HMBCa, combination group and control groups received standard care, from the ICU to the general ward until discharge. The primary outcomes assessed at discharge included six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and short physical performance battery (SPPB). Secondary outcomes measured included muscle mass, MRC score, grip strength, and health reports quality of life at different time points. Data analysis was performed using a generalised linear mixed model, adhering to the principles of intention-to-treat analysis. RESULTS: Resistance training and combination treatment groups exhibited significant increases in SPPB scores (3.848 and 2.832 points, respectively) compared to the control group and substantial improvements in 6WMD (99.768 and 88.577 m, respectively) (all with P < 0.01). However, no significant changes were observed in the HMB group. Muscle strength, as indicated by MRC and grip strength tests conducted at both ICU and hospital discharge, showed statistically significant improvements in the resistance training and combination groups (P < 0.05). Nevertheless, no significant differences were found between the treatment groups and usual care in terms of 60-day mortality, prevalence of ICU-AW, muscle mass, quality of life, or other functional aspects. CONCLUSIONS: Resistance training with or without beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate during the entire hospitalisation intervention improves physical function and muscle strength in medical ICU patients, but muscle mass, quality of life, and 60-day mortality were unaffected. The site-dependent photoluminescence of activators can be regulated by the sintering atmosphere, coexistence conditions, and especially cation codoping, which have been intensively studied for design and optimization of optical functional materials. Here, first-principles calculations are performed to determine the regulation of the site occupancy, valence states and optical transitions of Mn activators via codoping in yttrium aluminum garnets (YAGs), which contain three different cation sites. Without any codopants, Mnoct3+ dominates in defect concentration and photoluminescence, which can hardly be tuned by the sintering atmosphere or coexistence conditions of YAGs with other competing compounds. With the low formation energy of Ca2+, Be2+, Mg2+, and Sr2+ codopants and in an oxidation sintering atmosphere, the Fermi energy is lowered and the concentration and luminescence of Mnoct4+ are enhanced. Na+ and Li+ codopants with relatively high formation energy have little influence on tuning the Fermi energy. Then with the low formation energy of Ti4+, Si4+ codopants and in a reducing sintering atmosphere, the Fermi energy is lifted and the luminescence of Mndod2+ and Mnoct2+ is enhanced as a result of increased concentrations. The proposed first-principles scheme, with general applicability and encouraging predictive power, provides an effective approach for elucidating the effects of codoping impurities on the design and optimization of optical materials.

Type XXVIII collagen (COL28) is involved in cancer and lung fibrosis. COL28 polymorphisms and mutations might be involved in kidney fibrosis, but the exact role of COL28 in renal fibrosis is unknown. This study explored the function of COL28 in renal tubular cells by examining the expression of COL28 mRNA and the effects of COL28 overexpression in human tubular cells. COL28 mRNA expression and localization were observed in normal and fibrotic kidney tissues from humans and mice using real-time PCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. The consequences of COL28 overexpression on cell proliferation, migration, cell polarity, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) induced by TGF-ß1 were examined in human tubular HK-2 cells. COL28 expression was low in human normal renal tissues, mainly observed in the renal tubular epithelial cells and especially in proximal renal tubules. COL28 protein expression in human and mouse obstructive kidney disease was higher than in normal tissues (p < 0.05) and more significant in the UUO2-Week than the UUO1-Week group. The overexpression of COL28 promoted HK-2 cell proliferation and enhanced their migration ability (all p < 0.05). TGF-ß1 (10 ng/ml) induced COL28 mRNA expression in HK-2 cells, decreased E-cadherin and increased α-SMA in the COL28-overexpression group compared with controls (p < 0.05). ZO-1 expression decreased while COL6 increased in the COL28-overexpression group compared with controls (p < 0.05). In conclusion, COL28 overexpression promotes the migration and proliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells. The EMT could also be involved. COL28 could be a therapeutic target against renal- fibrotic diseases.

Pasteurella multocida can cause goat hemorrhagic sepsis and endemic pneumonia. Respiratory epithelial cells are the first line of defense in the lungs during P. multocida infection. These cells act as a mechanical barrier and activate immune response to protect against invading pathogenic microorganisms. Upon infection, P. multocida adheres to the cells and causes changes in cell morphology and transcriptome. ATAC-seq was conducted to determine the changes in the chromatin open region of P. multocida-infected goat bronchial epithelial cells based on transcriptional regulation. A total of 13,079 and 28,722 peaks were identified in the control (CK) and treatment (T) groups (P. multocida infection group), respectively. The peaks significantly increased after P. multocida infection. The specific peaks for the CK and T groups were annotated to 545 and 6632 genes, respectively. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that the specific peak-related genes in the T group were enriched in immune reaction-related pathways, such as Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis, MAPK signaling pathway, bacterial invasion of epithelial cells, endocytosis, and autophagy pathways. Other cellular component pathways were also enriched, including the regulation of actin cytoskeleton, adherent junction, tight junction, and focal adhesion. The differential peaks between the two groups were subsequently analyzed. Compared to those in the CK group, 863 and 11 peaks were upregulated and downregulated, respectively, after the P. multocida infection. Fifty-six known transcription factor motifs were revealed in upregulated peaks in the P. multocida-infected group. By integrating ATAC-seq and RNA-seq, some candidate genes (SETBP1, RASGEF1B, CREB5, IRF5, TNF, CD70) that might be involved in the goat bronchial epithelial cell immune reaction to P. multocida infection were identified. Overall, P. multocida infection changed the structure of the cell and caused chromatin open regions to be upregulated. In addition, P. multocida infection actively mobilized the host immune response with the inflammatory phenotype. The findings provide valuable information for understanding the regulatory mechanisms of P. multocida-infected goat bronchial epithelial cells.

An optical fiber surface plasma resonance (SPR) sensor with MMF-TCF-MMF structure was designed to realize intelligent recognition of copper ions (Cu2+), and the selective adsorption sensitization was achieved by plating a layer of Cu2+-imprinted film on the surface of gold film excitation layer. Combining the principle of optical fiber interference and SPR, the proposed sensor realized the detection of the copper ions concentration through measuring the refractive index changes caused by ions adsorption on imprinted film. The Cu2+-imprinted optical fiber SPR sensor can realize the intelligent recognition and detection of copper ions in the complex environment and exhibits a detection sensitivity of -10.05 pm/ppm. The proposed sensor has tremendous development potential in practical application, and provides new ideas for the field of metal ions detection.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an opportunistic pathogen which can cause pneumonia, sepsis and infections of skin and soft tissue. The host mostly relies on innate immune responses to defend against the infection of A. baumannii. Currently, it has been confirmed that fibroblasts involved in innate immune responses. Therefore, to explore how bovine skin fibroblasts mediated immune responses to defend against A. baumannii infection, we analyzed the differential transcripts data of bovine skin fibroblasts infected with bovine A. baumannii by RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). We found that there were 3014 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at 14h with bovine A. baumannii infection, including 1940 up-regulated genes and 1074 down-regulated genes. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment showed that ubiquitin protein ligase binding, IL-6 receptor complex, ERK1 and ERK2 cascade terms were mainly enriched. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment showed that innate immune pathways were significantly enriched, such as TNF, IL-17, NLR, MAPK, NF-κB, endocytosis, apoptosis and HIF-1 signaling pathways. Furthermore, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) revealed that GO terms such as chemokine receptor binding and Th17 cell differentiation and KEGG pathways such as TLR and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathways were up-regulated. In addition, CASP3 and JUN were the core functional genes of apoptosis, while IL-6, ERBB2, EGFR, CHUK and MAPK8 were the core functional genes of immunity by Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) analysis. Our study provided an in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms of fibroblasts against A. baumannii infection. It also lays the foundation for the development of new therapeutic targets for the diseases caused by A. baumannii infection and formulates effective therapeutic strategies for the prevention and control of the diseases caused by A. baumannii.

ABSTRACT: We evaluated changes in rates of testing and diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections during the 2017-2020 period at Kaiser Permanente Southern California. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, we observed profound reductions in testing and fewer diagnoses of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV compared with prepandemic periods, but syphilis diagnoses rates increased by 32%.

The abundant site occupancy and optical transitions of multivalence Mn dopants in luminescent materials have attracted much attention. Here, detailed first-principles calculations based on density functional theory have been carried out to clarify the multisite and multivalence nature of Mn ions in solids and predict their optical transition properties by using garnets as prototype systems. The formation energies of dodecahedral, octahedral, and tetrahedral coordinated Mn dopants are evaluated with chemical potential environments, and the preferable site occupancy and valence state of Mn ions in three garnet systems are clarified. The results show that even in a fixed atmosphere, taking Ca3Al2Ge3O12 in air as an example, not only can the preference of Mn ions switch between dodecahedral and octahedral sites, but also can the valence state change from Mn2+ to Mn3+ and Mn4+. Furthermore, for all of the three garnet systems, the calculation results of the energy-level structure and photoluminescence of Mn ions at different sites in the different valence states provide a reliable interpretation of the available spectroscopic data. The proposed first-principles scheme, with general applicability and encouraging predictive power, provides an effective approach for elucidating and characterizing the site occupancy, valence state, and optical transition of Mn activators in insulators, and will greatly benefit the design and optimization of related materials.

First-principles calculations based on density functional theory have been performed to investigate the electronic structure, excited-state Jahn-Teller distortion, and photoluminescence of the multielectron d5 system of the strongly covalent tetrahedral coordinated Mn2+ activator in solids. The electronic structure of the 4T1 and 4A1/4E excited states is analyzed, and Slater's transition-state method and occupation matrix control methodology are applied to deal with the spin contamination in the lower-spin excited states, which is due to the mixing of the ground state of the same spin projection number. In a series of covalent tetrahedral coordinations, the 6A1 → 4T1 and 4A1/4E excitations and the 4T1 → 6A1 emission energies are obtained and compared to the reported experimental results. The nephelauxetic effect follows O2- < S2- ≈ Se2- < N3-, and the larger nephelauxetic effect and crystal field strength lead to the red-shifted emission of nitride phosphors. The Jahn-Teller distortion of the 4T1 states is dominated by the e-type angular distortion of the [MnL4] moiety (L being the ligand), which accounts for the small Stokes shift of tetrahedral coordinated Mn2+. The results show that the ground- and excited-state electronic and geometric structures and the luminescent property of tetrahedral coordinated Mn2+ can be reliably predicted. The method can be further explored to interpret and discriminate the luminescent properties of materials containing a variety of different Mn2+ sites and complexes and even other transition metals.

Luminescent ns2 centers have shown great potential for applications as phosphors and scintillators. First-principles calculations based on density functional theory are performed to systematically analyze the luminescent centers of isolated and paired Bi3+(6s2) ions in layered LnOCl (Ln = Y, Gd, La) crystals. The spin-orbit coupling and orbital hybridization both show important effects on the luminescence properties. The luminescence of the isolated Bi ion is confirmed as the interconfigurational transition of 3P0,1 → 1S0. For the Bi pair, the adiabatic potential energy surfaces are calculated and the charge transfer excited state is the most stable, which accounts for the visible emission of a large Stokes shift. Furthermore, the electron-hole pair separation, absorption, excitonic state and emission of the material with fully-concentrated Bi3+, BiOCl, are discussed. This study shows that the first-principles calculations can serve as an effective tool for the photoluminescence analysis and engineering of materials activated with isolated, paired and even fully-concentrated ns2 ions.
