RESUMO

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising porous materials due to their high specific surface area, adjustable structure, highly ordered nanochannels, and abundant functional groups, which brings about wide applications in the field of gas adsorption, hydrogen storage, optics, and so forth. In recent years, COFs have attracted considerable attention in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Specifically, COF-based functional separators are ideal candidates for addressing the ionic transport-related issues in high-energy batteries, such as dendritic formation and shuttle effect. Therefore, it is necessary to make a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of COFs in functional separators. In this review, the advantages, applications as well as synthesis of COFs are firstly presented. Then, the mechanism of COFs in functional separators for high-energy batteries is summarized in detail, including pore channels regulating ionic transport, functional groups regulating ionic transport, adsorption effect, and catalytic effect. Finally, the application prospect of COFs-based separators in high-energy batteries is proposed. This review may provide new insights into the design of functional separators for advanced electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems.

Water-to-land transition is a hallmark of terrestrialization for land plants and requires molecular adaptation to resist water deficiency. Lineages- or species-specific genes are widespread across eukaryotes, and yet the majority of those are functionally unknown and not annotated. Recent studies have revealed that some of such genes could play a role in adapting to environmental stress responses. Here, we identified a novel gene PpBCG1 (Bryophyte Co-retained Gene 1) in the moss Physcomitrium patens that was responsive to dehydration and rehydration. Under de- and rehydration treatments, PpBCG1 was significantly co-expressed with the dehydrin-encoding gene PpDHNA. Microarray data revealed that PpBCG1 was highly expressed in tissues of spores, female organ archegonia, and mature sporophytes. In addition, the Ppbcg1 mutant showed reduced ability of dehydration tolerance, whose plants were accompanied by a relatively low level of chlorophyll content during recovery. Comprehensive transcriptomics uncovered a detailed set of regulatory processes that were affected by the PpBCG1 disruption. Moreover, experimental evidence showed that PpBCG1 might function in the antioxidant activity, abscisic acid (ABA) pathway, and intracellular calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis to resist desiccation. Together, our study provides insights into the roles of one bryophyte co-retained gene in the desiccation tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective and available local treatment for patients with refractory or relapsed (R/R) aggressive B-cell lymphomas. However, the value of hypofractionated RT in this setting has not been confirmed. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with R/R aggressive B-cell lymphoma who received hypofractionated RT between January 2020 and August 2022 at a single institution. The objective response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and acute side effects were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients were included. The median dose for residual disease was 36 Gy, at a dose per fraction of 2.3-5 Gy. After RT, the ORR and complete response (CR) rates were 90% and 80%, respectively. With a median follow-up of 10 months (range, 2-27 months), 10 patients (33.3%) experienced disease progression and three died. The 1-year OS and PFS rates for all patients were 81.8% and 66.3%, respectively. The majority (8/10) of post-RT progressions involved out-of-field relapses. Patients with relapsed diseases, no response to systemic therapy, multiple lesions at the time of RT, and no response to RT were associated with out-of-field relapses. PFS was associated with response to RT (P = 0.001) and numbers of residual sites (P < 0.001). No serious non-hematological adverse effects (≥ grade 3) associated with RT were reported. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that hypofractionated RT was effective and tolerable for patients with R/R aggressive B-cell lymphoma, especially for those that exhibited localized residual disease.

This investigation is motivated by an interest in multiferroic BaFe12O19 (BFO), which combines advanced ferrimagnetic and ferroelectric properties at room temperature and exhibits interesting magnetoelectric phenomena. The ferroelectric charge storage properties of BFO are limited due to high coercivity, low dielectric constant, and high dielectric losses. We report the pseudocapacitive behavior of BFO, which allows superior charge storage compared to the ferroelectric charge storage mechanism. The BFO electrodes show a remarkably high capacitance of 1.34 F cm-2 in a neutral Na2SO4 electrolyte. The charging mechanism is discussed. The capacitive behavior is linked to the beneficial effect of high-energy ball milling (HEBM) and the use of an efficient dispersant, which facilitates charge transfer. Another approach is based on the use of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) for the fabrication of PPy-BFO composites. The choice of new polyaromatic dopants with a high charge-to-mass ratio plays a crucial role in achieving a high capacitance of 4.66 F cm-2 for pure PPy electrodes. The composite PPy-BFO (50/50) electrodes show a capacitance of 3.39 F cm-2, low impedance, reduced charge transfer resistance, enhanced capacitance retention at fast charging rates, and good cyclic stability due to the beneficial effect of advanced dopants, HEBM, and synergy of the contribution of PPy and BFO.

BACKGROUND: Melaleuca alternifolia is a commercially important medicinal tea tree native to Australia. Tea tree oil, the essential oil distilled from its branches and leaves, has broad-spectrum germicidal activity and is highly valued in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Thus, the study of genome, which can provide reference for the investigation of genes involved in terpinen-4-ol biosynthesis, is quite crucial for improving the productivity of Tea tree oil. METHODS AND RESULTS: In our study, the next-generation sequencing was used to investigate the whole genome of Melaleuca alternifolia. About 114 Gb high quality sequence data were obtained and assembled into 1,838,159 scafolds with an N50 length of 1021 bp. The assembled genome size is about 595 Mb, twice of that predicted by flow cytometer (300 Mb) and k-mer analysis (345 Mb). Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs analyses indicated that only 11.3% of the conserved single-copy genes were miss. Repetitive regions cover over 40.43% of the genome. A total of 44,369 protein-coding genes were predicted and annotated against Nr, Swissprot, Refseq, COG, KOG, and KEGG database. Among these genes, 32,909 and 16,241 genes were functionally annotated in Nr and KEGG, respectively. Moreover, 29,411 and 14,435 genes were functionally annotated in COG and KOG. Additionally, 457,661 simple sequence repeats and 1109 transcription factors (TFs) form 67 TF families were identified in the assembled genome. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide a draft genome sequencing of M. alternifolia which can act as a reference for the deep sequencing strategies, and are useful for future functional and comparative genomics analyses.

Earth-abundant transition metal catalysis has emerged as an important alternative to noble transition metal catalysis in hydrogenation reactions. However, there has been no Earth-abundant transition metal catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides reported so far, presumably due to the poisoning of catalysts by sulfur-containing molecules. Herein, we described the first manganese-catalyzed hydrogenative desulfurization of thioamides to amines or imines. The key to success is the use of MnBr(CO)5 instead of commonly-employed pincer-manganese catalysts, together with simple NEt3 and CuBr. This protocol features excellent selectivity on sole cleavage of the C=S bond of thioamides, in contrast to the only known Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides, and unprecedented chemo-selectivity tolerating vulnerable functional groups such as nitrile, ketone, aldehyde, ester, sulfone, nitro, olefin, alkyne and heterocycle, which are usually susceptible to common hydride-type reductive protocols.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the prognostic value of MRI-detected extramural vascular invasion (mrEMVI) and mrEMVI after neoadjuvant therapy (ymrEMVI) in rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant therapy. METHODS: A systematic search of the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was carried out up to June 2020. Studies that evaluated mrEMVI, used treatment with neoadjuvant therapy, and reported survival were included. The time-to-event outcomes (OS and DFS rates) are expressed as hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). If the HR was not reported in the study, it was calculated from the survival curve using methods according to Parmar's recommendation. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS: A total of 2237 patients from 11 studies were included, and the pooled analysis of the overall results from eight studies showed that patients who were mrEMVI positive at baseline had significantly worse disease-free survival (DFS) (random-effects model: HR = 2.50 [1.84, 3.14]; Z = 5.83, p < 0.00001). The pooled analysis of the overall results from six studies showed that patients who were ymrEMVI positive following neoadjuvant therapy had significantly worse DFS (random-effects model: HR = 2.24 [1.73, 2.90], Z = 6.12, p < 0.00001). Patients with mrEMVI positivity at baseline were also associated with worse overall survival (OS) (random-effects model: HR = 1.93 [1.36, 2.73]; Z = 3.71, p < 0.00001). CONCLUSION: mrEMVI and ymrEMVI positivity are poor prognostic factors for rectal cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant therapy. The precise evaluation of EMVI may contribute to designing individualised treatments and improving patient outcomes. KEY POINTS: • Extramural vascular invasion (EMVI) is a prognostic factor for rectal cancer. • MRI can be used to evaluate EMVI status before (mrEMVI) and after neoadjuvant therapy (ymrEMVI). • The evaluation of mrEMVI and ymrEMVI in neoadjuvant therapy would provide an early assessment of patient prognosis.

A series of ursolic acid (UA), oleanolic acid (OA) and 18ß-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) derivatives were synthesized by introducing a range of substituted aromatic side-chains at the C-2 position after the hydroxyl group at C-3 position was oxidized. Their antibacterial activities were evaluated in vitro against a panel of four Staphylococcus spp. The results revealed that the introduction of aromatic side-chains at the C-2 position of GA led to the discovery of potent triterpenoid derivatives for inhibition of both drug sensitive and resistant S. aureus, while the other two series derivatives of UA and OA showed no significant antibacterial activity even at high concentrations. In particular, GA derivative 33 showed good potency against all four Staphylococcus spp. (MIC = 1.25-5 µmol/L) with acceptable pharmacokinetics properties and low cytotoxicity in vitro. Molecular docking was also performed using S. aureus DNA gyrase to rationalize the observed antibacterial activity. This series of GA derivatives has strong potential for the development of a new type of triterpenoid antibacterial agent.

Research efforts have been directed to the development of oleanolic acid (OA) based α-glucosidase inhibitors and various OA derivatives showed improved anti-α-glucosidase activity. However, the inhibitory effects of indole infused OA derivatives on α-glucosidase is unknown. Herein, we synthesized a series of indole-OA (2a-2o) and -OA methyl ester (3a-3 l) derivatives with various electron withdrawing groups inducted to indole benzene ring and evaluated their anti-α-glucosidase activity. Indole OA derivatives (2a-2o) exhibited superior α-glucosidase inhibitory effects as compared to OA methyl ester derivatives (3a-3l) and OA (with IC50 values of 4.02 µM-5.30 µM v.s. over 10 µM and 5.52 µM, respectively). In addition, mechanistic studies using biochemical (kinetic assay), biophysical (circular dichroism), and computational (docking) methods revealed that OA-indole derivatives (2a and 2f) are mixed type of α-glucosidase inhibitors and their inhibitory effects were attributed to their capacity of forming the ligand-enzyme complex with α-glucosidase enzyme. Findings from this study support that OA indole derivatives are promising α-glucosidase inhibitors as a potential management of diabetes mellitus.

MYB transcription factors (TFs) are one of the largest TF families in plants to regulate numerous biological processes. However, our knowledge of the MYB family in Physcomitrella patens is limited. We identified 116 MYB genes in the P. patens genome, which were classified into the R2R3-MYB, R1R2R3-MYB, 4R-MYB, and MYB-related subfamilies. Most R2R3 genes contain 3 exons and 2 introns, whereas R1R2R3 MYB genes contain 10 exons and 9 introns. N3R-MYB (novel 3RMYB) and NR-MYBs (novel RMYBs) with complicated gene structures appear to be novel MYB proteins. In addition, we found that the diversity of the MYB domain was mainly contributed by domain shuffling and gene duplication. RNA-seq analysis suggested that MYBs exhibited differential expression to heat and might play important roles in heat stress responses, whereas CCA1-like MYB genes might confer greater flexibility to the circadian clock. Some R2R3-MYB and CCA1-like MYB genes are preferentially expressed in the archegonium and during the transition from the chloronema to caulonema stage, suggesting their roles in development. Compared with that of algae, the numbers of MYBs have significantly increased, thus our study lays the foundation for further exploring the potential roles of MYBs in the transition from aquatic to terrestrial environments.

INTRODUCTION: To study the expression of defensin-5 (RD-5), soluble phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) and lysozyme in the intestine in a rat model of acute liver failure and its relationship with intestinal bacterial translocation (BT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided into two groups. The experimental group was divided into five subgroups according to the lapsing time after the model was established, which were designated accordingly as 8h, 16h, 24h, 48h, and 72h groups. Acute liver failure (ALF) model was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 10% d-galactosamine. The homogenates of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs), liver and spleen from each group were cultured in agar to determine the bacterial outgrowth. The mRNA expression of RD-5, sPLA2, lysozyme and the protein expression of sPLA2, lysozyme were determined. RESULTS: No bacteria grew in the organ cultures from the control group while experimental groups had positive cultures. Expression of the RD-5 and sPLA2 mRNA in the experimental groups gradually increased at early time points and peaked 16h after induction of ALF, then progressively decreased. The mRNA expression of lysozyme in the experimental group peaked at 8h after ALF induction, then progressively decreased. Similar results were obtained with Western blot and immunohistochemical staining. DISCUSSION: The immune barrier function of the ileal mucosa in the rat model of acute liver failure was compromised as demonstrated by the decreased expression of RD-5, sPLA2 and lysozyme in Paneth cells along with increased intestinal bacterial translocation.

Background: Platinum compounds are commonly used for lung cancer treatment. However, the severe side effects and relatively poor prognosis limit their therapeutic effect. Therefore, developing novel platinum derivative and treatment strategy are critical for current lung cancer therapy. Methods: Flow cytometry, HMGB1 and ATP release, and immunoblotting were performed to evaluate the Oxaliplatin-induced immunogenic cell death (ICD) in two lung carcinoma cells. Vaccination approach and subcutaneous tumor models were created to analyze the tumor regression effect of Oxaliplatin. PD-L1 mRNA and protein levels were detected in LLC (Lewis lung carcinoma). Enhanced therapeutic efficacy of LLC was assessed by co-administration Oxaliplatin and aPD-L1 in murine lung tumor model. Results: Oxaliplatin induced robust ICD in LLC cells, activated dendritic cells (DCs, CD80+CD86+) and enhanced cytotoxic T cells (CD8+) in LLC tumor tissues, which resulted in tumor regression. Co-administration of Oxaliplatin and checkpoint inhibitor, aPD-L1, could enhance the therapeutic efficacy of LLC in murine lung carcinoma. Conclusion: This study reveals Oxaliplatin can induce robust ICD in tumor tissues and suppress tumor growth by activating DCs and enhancing T-cell infiltration. Notably, the Oxaliplatin-induced ICD provides an immunogenic microenvironment, which enhances the checkpoint inhibitor therapeutic efficacy of LLC.

BACKGROUND: Because of previous ventricular arrhythmia (VA) episodes, patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) for secondary prevention (SP) are generally considered to have a higher burden of VAs than primary prevention (PP) patients. However, when PP patients experienced VA, the difference in the prognosis of these two patient groups was unknown. METHODS: The clinical characteristics and follow-up data of 835 ICD patients (364 SP patients and 471 PP patients) with home monitoring feature were retrospectively analysed. The incidence rate and risk of subsequent VA and all-cause mortality were compared between PP patients after the first appropriate ICD therapy and SP patients. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 44.72 ± 20.87 months, 210 (44.59%) PP patients underwent appropriate ICD therapy. In the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, the PP patients after appropriate ICD therapy were more prone to VA recurrence and all-cause mortality than SP patients (P<0.001 for both endpoints). The rate of appropriate ICD therapy and all-cause mortality in PP patients after the first appropriate ICD therapy was significantly higher than that in SP patients (for device therapy, 59.46 vs 20.64 patients per 100 patient-years; incidence rate ratio [IRR] 2.880, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.305-3.599; P<0.001; for all-cause mortality, 14.08 vs 5.40 deaths per 100 patient-years; IRR 2.607, 95% CI: 1.884-3.606; P<0.001). After propensity score matching for baseline characteristics, the risk of VA recurrence in PP patients with appropriate ICD therapy was still higher than that in SP patients (41.80 vs 19.10 patients per 100 patient-years; IRR 2.491, 95% CI: 1.889-3.287; P<0.001), but all-cause mortality rates were similar between the two groups (12.61 vs 9.33 deaths per 100 patient-years; IRR 1.352, 95% CI: 0.927-1.972; P = 0.117). CONCLUSIONS: Once PP patients undergo appropriate ICD therapy, they will be more prone to VA recurrence and death than SP patients.

BACKGROUND: Premature ventricular complex (PVC) was mainly studied by 24-hour Holter in previous studies. However, the value of long-term Home Monitoring of PVC burden early after ICD implantation is unknown. METHODS: The data of 416 patients with ICD were analyzed. The percentage of days with frequent PVC (≥10/h) within 30th-90th days was calculated as the continuous frequent PVC (CfPVC) percentage. ROC curve of CfPVC percentages was plotted. Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression were used to assess the cumulative risks. RESULTS: Based on ROC curves, the cut-off value for the CfPVC percentage was 40%. According to Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate Cox regression analysis, CfPVC percentage ≥40% was an independent predictor of higher incidences of VAEs, appropriate ATP, appropriate shocks, and cardiac death. CONCLUSION: A long-term continuous burden of frequent PVC with CfPVC percentage ≥40% can be a predictor of future VAEs, appropriate ATP, appropriate shocks and cardiac death in ICD recipients.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary dandelion extracts (DE) supplementation on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition, plasma biochemical indices, immune responses, hepatic antioxidant abilities, and resistance to the pathogen Vibrio harveyi in Trachinotus ovatus. A basal diet supplemented with DE at 0, 0.50, 1.00, 2.00, 4.00 and 10.00 g kg-1 were fed to golden pompano for 8 weeks. The study indicated that dietary supplementation with DE could significantly improve final body weight (FBW), weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed efficiency ratio (FER), feed intake (FI), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and protein deposit rate (PDR) (P < 0.05). The highest FBW, WGR, SGR, FI and PDR were observed in fish fed 1.00 g kg-1 dietary DE (P < 0.05). The highest FER and PER were recorded at 0.50 g kg-1 dietary DE (P < 0.05). Condition factor, viscerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and survival were not significantly different among all groups. Fish fed 1.00 g kg-1 dietary DE showed significant increase in plasma total protein, complement 4 content and alkaline phosphatase, lysozyme, glutathione reductase (GSR) activity, but significant decrease in triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and aspartate aminotransferase activities compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Hepatic antioxidant enzymes (SOD, T-AOC, CAT, GSH-Px, GSR) significantly increased whereas MDA content significantly decreased in fish fed 1.00 g kg-1 DE supplement (P < 0.05). After challenge with Vibrio harveyi, significant higher post-challenge survival was observed in fish fed DE supplement (P < 0.05). These results indicated that golden pompano fed a diet supplemented with DE (especially at 1.00 g kg-1 of fed supplement) could significantly promote its growth performance, feed utilization, body protein deposit, immune ability, hepatic and plasma antioxidative enzyme activities and improve its resistance to infection by Vibrio harveyi.

Gastric cancer (GC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. The optimal treatment regimens for GC depend on tumor stage, histopathological subtype, and other factors. The detection of tumor biomarkers is a quick way to get information of the tumor state. In this study, new biomarkers are detected for GC diagnostic and prognostic purposes. A total of 305 cases of diagnosed gastric adenocarcinoma were enrolled, microRNAs (miRNAs) and their transcriptome sequencing data were obtained from the "The Cancer Genome Atlas." Blood samples were collected from GC patients before surgery and therapy. The miRNA levels and the expression of RNA were detected by real-time RT-PCR. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of biomarkers. The combining predictors were established with the logistic regression analysis. Hundreds of miRNA were with higher area under curve (AUC) than 0.5; among them, nine miRNAs were with the highest AUC more than 0.90 and displayed strong diagnostic value. Moreover, the mir-17 level was correlated with tumor stage (p = 0.029), while mir-133b, mir-133a-2, and mir-1-2 levels were significantly correlated with race, tumor pathologic, and tumor stage (p < 0.05). The combination biomarker (mir-181a-1/KAT2B with a sensitivity of 95.83 % and specificity of 94.12 %) could be used as an independent diagnostic indicator for GC patients. For GC patients, mir-17, mir-133b, mir-133a-2, and mir-1-2 appear to be a potential novel predictor of tumor stage and preoperative and intraoperative diagnosis. The combination of miRNA and mRNA such as mir-181a-1/KAT2B (with a sensitivity of 95.83 % and specificity of 94.12 %) showed significant improvement in the diagnostic accuracy.

AIMS: The present study was to assess the reduction of right ventricular pacing (RVP) by pacemaker algorithms of Managed Ventricular Pacing (MVP) and Search AV+ (SAV+) interval over a period of 12 months. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 385 patients indicated for a dual-chamber pacemaker (DC-PM) were enrolled in the prospective, randomized COMPARE study at 29 centres in China between June 2009 and April 2011. Patients implanted with DC-PMs were randomized in a 1 : 1 ratio to the MVP group or the SAV+ group. The percentage of VP (%VP) was obtained from the device diagnostic data at 1-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups and was expressed as the median %VP over all beats in patients with sinus node dysfunction (SND) and atrioventricular block (AVB) excluding persistent third-degree AVB. Of 385 enrolled patients, 253 had SND and 72 had AVB. The %VP in the MVP group was significantly lower than that in the SAV+ group at 1-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups, respectively. At 12-month follow-up, the median %VP in SND patients was 0.20% in the MVP group and 1.4% in the SAV+ group (P < 0.0001) and the median %VP in AVB patients was 11.8% in the MVP group and 98.1% in the SAV+ group (P < 0.001). There was no statistical difference in %VP from 1- to 12-month follow-up. A trend in the correlation between %VP and AT/AF burden was observed. CONCLUSION: Over 12-month follow-up, the %VP was lower for MVP than SAV+ in patients with either SND or AVB. The sustainable %VP reduction has potential implications in reducing the development of heart failure and/or atrial arrhythmia morbidity.

AIM: To analyze the clinical applications and observe the priority of Home Monitoring (HM) systems for early event detection including clinical cardiac warning events, abnormal device parameters and other events in patients with permanent cardiac pacemakers. METHODS: A total of 58 patients who received dual-chamber pacemakers, ICDs and CRT-P/Ds were enrolled and monitored using the HM system for 416 ± 398 days. Automatic system-transmitted events by HM and related clinical information were recorded and consulted by well-trained physicians. Conventional and unconventional follow-up initialed by HM results were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty patients (69 %) transmitted abnormal events via the HM system. Twenty-one of these were cardiac events. Atrial fibrillation (AF) was the most common transmitted clinical event. AF was detected an average of 44.26 ± 18.33 days earlier in HM patients than on routine clinical visits alone. A total of 20 patients reported 62 events related to abnormal device parameters. Among these events, disabled ACC/ATM function was the most common warning event (17 times) transmitted by 14 of the patients, and they were detected an average of 67.6 ± 29.0 days ahead of the routine office device follow-up. A total of seven patients reported silent events and totally eight patients were required to make an unscheduled clinical visit. Eighteen patients (31 %) transmitted no warning event and accepted no parameter adjustment during observation. CONCLUSIONS: The HM system is useful in early detection of abnormal warning events as well as the primary detection of silent events in post-pacemaker implantation patients. Additionally, the HM system benefits patients during the whole process of device follow-up by real-time monitoring, and reduces medical costs effectively for patients with no abnormal reports or necessity of parameter adjustment.

A long-standing key issue for examining the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF), such as forest productivity, is whether ecosystem functions are influenced by the total number of species or the properties of a few key species. Compared with controlled ecosystem experiments, the BEF relationships in secondary forest remain unclear, as do the effects of common species richness and rare species richness on the variation in ecosystem functions. To address this issue, we conducted field surveys at five sampling sites (1 ha each) with subtropical secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest vegetation. We found (1) a positive correlation between species richness and standing aboveground biomass (AGB); (2) that common species were primarily responsible for the distribution patterns of species abundance and dominance; although they accounted for approximately 25% of the total species richness on average, they represented 86-91% of species abundance and 88-97% of species dominance; and (3) that common species richness could explain much more of the variation in AGB than total species richness (common species plus rare species) at both the site and plot scales. Because rare species and common species were not equivalent in their ability to predict productivity in the biodiversity-ecosystem productivity model, redundant information should be eliminated to obtain more accurate results. Our study suggested that woody plant species richness and productivity relationship in subtropical forest ecosystem can be explained and predicted by a few common species.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most common types of mental disorders. Guided by the theory of social determinants of health (SDH), the study aimed to assess the prevalence of depressive symptoms and to identify factors related to depressive symptoms in the general population of China. METHODS: A cross-sectional, online survey was conducted among 101,392 residents from 31 provinces of mainland China from January to March 2019, and 97,126 survey responses were included in the final analysis. Multilevel linear regression models were used to identify SDH associated with depressive symptoms. RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 scores ≥10) in Chinese residents was 15.81 %. The results of the multilevel analysis demonstrated that depressive symptoms were affected by various factors on five levels, including individual characteristics, behavioral lifestyle, community support network, social structural factors, and macro social factors. LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional design of the study makes it difficult to establish causality between variables. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms is high among general population in China. According to the theory of SDH, the study shows that the depressive symptoms are complex and involves all areas of social life. Therefore, adopting a multi-level, cross-sectoral intervention approach will be instrumental to improving the mental health of residents in China.
