[The history of oximetry].

Presently, pulsoximeters are very common devices used in every surgical operation. Unique properties of pulsoximeter (safety, accuracy, and efficiency) enable physician to monitor oxygen-transporting function of blood, which is a vitally important function of human body. The history of pulsoximetry dates back to several generations ago, researchers of many countries being involved in the invention of this device. The idea of pulsoximetry has been updated at each stage of technological progress. The history of pulsoximetry illustrates progressively increasing importance of spectrophotometric method in medicine and its perspectives for the future.

[Problems of inhalation gas mixture conditioning in high-frequency jet apparatuses for mechanical lung ventilation].

The problem of inhalation gas mixture conditioning, an important problem of technological implementation of high-frequency jet apparatuses for mechanical lung ventilation (MLV), is discussed. Methods of heating and humidification of inhaled gas mixture are considered along with conventional methods used in anesthetic MLV apparatuses.

[Automated monitoring in intensive therapy of critical states].

Progress in information technologies significantly modified conventional approaches to monitors of vitally important parameters of patient. Monitoring systems are not autonomous devices anymore. Instead of that, these systems provide access to electronic case histories, automated monitoring of drug therapy, and many other important functions. Cordless radio and infrared interfaces provide a physical basis of implementation of new user functions. New trends in the development of central monitoring networks (CMN) available from various manufacturers are reviewed in this work. These trends are illustrated taking the Triton ElectronicS CardioNet CMN as an example.

[Effect of a bioactive food supplement from selenium enriched baker's yeast autolysate on the status of the intestinal barrier in rats with anaphylaxis]. / Vliianie biologicheski aktivnoi dobavki avtolizata obogashchënnykh selenom lekarskikh drozhzhei na sostoianie kishechnogo bar'era u krys pri anafilaksii.

Rat's intestinal barrier permeability disturbed in consequence of intestinal anaphylaxis reaction was almost completely normalized in animals fed with baker's yeast autolysate "Vitasil" enriched with selenium on a level of 3 mg Se/day during 29 days. These rats showed in comparison to Se-unsupplemented animals a significant elevation of Se level in red blood cells and plasma together with a decrease of intestinal mucosal TCA-soluble thiol compounds. Urinary Se excretion was significantly elevated in comparison to unsensitized rats both in Se-supplemented and unsupplemented animals with anaphylaxis. It's concluded that "Se-Vitasil" may be successfully used in antioxidative therapy of food allergy, malabsorption, inflammatory bowel diseases and intestinal infection.

[Prevention by electropuncture of the hypoalgesic effect of fasting]. / Elektropunkturnaia profilaktika gipoalgeticheskogo deistviia golodovogo stressa.

The influence of electropuncture preventive effect on the dynamics of the human nonciceptive system parameters under conditions of fasting stress was studied in 12 healthy volunteers. The results bear evidence that fasting, just like other types of stress, is attended by the development of hypoalgesia. Diminished appreciation of pain is determined by parameters characterizing the effective and sensory components of pain sense. Electropuncture conducted during fasting inhibits the development of pain sense disorders induced by fasting stress, reduces some of the emotional reactions, and has no unfavourable side-effects. The results of the study suggest that electropuncture can be applied as a stress-limiting measure in fasting.
