RESUMO

Composites from 2D nanomaterials show uniquely high electrical, thermal and mechanical properties1,2. Pairing their robustness with polarization rotation is needed for hyperspectral optics in extreme conditions3,4. However, the rigid nanoplatelets have randomized achiral shapes, which scramble the circular polarization of photons with comparable wavelengths. Here we show that multilayer nanocomposites from 2D nanomaterials with complex textured surfaces strongly and controllably rotate light polarization, despite being nano-achiral and partially disordered. The intense circular dichroism (CD) in nanocomposite films originates from the diagonal patterns of wrinkles, grooves or ridges, leading to an angular offset between axes of linear birefringence (LB) and linear dichroism (LD). Stratification of the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled nanocomposites affords precise engineering of the polarization-active materials from imprecise nanoplatelets with an optical asymmetry g-factor of 1.0, exceeding those of typical nanomaterials by about 500 times. High thermal resilience of the composite optics enables operating temperature as high as 250 °C and imaging of hot emitters in the near-infrared (NIR) part of the spectrum. Combining LBL engineered nanocomposites with achiral dyes results in anisotropic factors for circularly polarized emission approaching the theoretical limit. The generality of the observed phenomena is demonstrated by nanocomposite polarizers from molybdenum sulfide (MoS2), MXene and graphene oxide (GO) and by two manufacturing methods. A large family of LBL optical nanocomponents can be computationally designed and additively engineered for ruggedized optics.

RESUMO

Chiral plasmonic surfaces with 3D "forests" from nanohelicoids should provide strong optical rotation due to alignment of helical axis with propagation vector of photons. However, such three-dimensional nanostructures also demand multi-step nanofabrication, which is incompatible with many substrates. Large-scale photonic patterns on polymeric and flexible substrates remain unattainable. Here, we demonstrate the substrate-tolerant direct-write printing and patterning of silver nanohelicoids with out-of-plane 3D orientation using circularly polarized light. Centimeter-scale chiral plasmonic surfaces can be produced within minutes using inexpensive medium-power lasers. The growth of nanohelicoids is driven by the symmetry-broken site-selective deposition and self-assembly of the silver nanoparticles (NPs). The ellipticity and wavelength of the incident photons control the local handedness and size of the printed nanohelicoids, which enables on-the-fly modulation of nanohelicoid chirality during direct writing and simple pathways to complex multifunctional metasurfaces. Processing simplicity, high polarization rotation, and fine spatial resolution of the light-driven printing of stand-up helicoids provide a rapid pathway to chiral plasmonic surfaces, accelerating the development of chiral photonics for health and information technologies.

RESUMO

An 8-year-old, intact male Persian cat was presented with a prominent heart murmur, exercise intolerance, anorexia, and periodontitis. There was no cyanosis and no laboratory evidence for systemic hypoxemia. Echocardiography showed a dextropositioned aorta, moderate pulmonic stenosis (maximal velocity 4.06 m/s), ventricular septal defect, and right ventricular hypertrophy. The shunt direction was predominantly left-to-right in systole and minimally right-to-left in diastole. The cat was diagnosed with acyanotic (pink) tetralogy of Fallot and was managed medically with atenolol.

Recently, biocompatible optical sources have been surfacing for new-rising biomedical applications, allowing them to be used for multi-purpose technologies such as biological sensing, optogenetic modulation, and phototherapy. Especially, vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is in the spotlight as a prospective candidate for optical sources owing to its low-driving current performance, low-cost, and package easiness in accordance with two-dimensional (2D) arrays structure. In this study, we successfully demonstrated the actualization of biocompatible thin-film 930 nm VCSELs transferred onto a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) carrier. The PDMS feature with biocompatibility as well as biostability makes the thin-film VCSELs well-suited for biomedical applications. In order to integrate the conventional VCSEL onto the PDMS carrier, we utilized a double-transfer technique that transferred the thin-film VCSELs onto foreign substrates twice, enabling it to maintain the p-on-n polarity of the conventional VCSEL. Additionally, we employed a surface modification-assisted bonding (SMB) using an oxygen plasma in conjunction with silane treatment when bonding the PDMS carrier with the substrate-removed conventional VCSELs. The threshold current and maximum output power of the fabricated 930 nm thin-film VCSELs are 1.08 mA and 7.52 mW at an injection current of 13.9 mA, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The cortical vessel signs (CVSs) on susceptibility-weighted images (SWIs) have been reported in patients with hyperacute ischemic stroke. We evaluated the change of this susceptibility sign on the immediate SWI after full recanalization and its clinical implications. METHODS: Nineteen hyperacute ischemic stroke patients who had acute large artery occlusion and underwent post-recanalization SWI were enrolled in this study. The patients had ICA (internal carotid artery, 2 cases), M1 (M1 segment of middle cerebral artery, 7 cases), M2 (M2 segment of middle cerebral artery, 1 cases), T (intracranial ICA bifurcation, 2 cases), ICA/M1 (4 cases) and basilar artery (3 cases) occlusion on imaging studies before thrombolysis and they underwent immediate magnetic resonance imaging, including the SWI, after full recanalization. The recanalization status was evaluated using the thrombolysis in cerebral infarction (TICI) score before and after thrombolysis. The SWI images were evaluated for the presence of asymmetry of veins over the ischemic territory and this was correlated with the site of stenosis or occlusion. The veins in the ischemic territory were classified as 'prominent' if there were more numerous veins and/or large veins with a greater signal loss observed compared with the opposite normal hemisphere, 'equal' if there were no significant difference in appearance in both the cerebral hemispheres, and 'less' if the veins were decreased in the affected area as compared with that of the normal cortex. Baseline clinical parameters and clinical outcomes were reviewed. RESULTS: The initial TICI grades were 0 in all cases. After thrombolysis, TICI grades were 3 in all cases. The pre-recanalization SWIs were obtained in 10 of 19 patients and all 10 showed prominent CVSs over the affected side, which disappeared on the post-recanalization SWI. On the post-recanalization SWI, the observed veins in the affected area were equal (10/19), less (5/19), and both equal and less (4/19). Patients with equal cortical veins in the affected area had small lesions on diffusion-weighted image (DWI) (10/19), while patients with less cortical veins had medium to large lesions on DWI (9/19). CONCLUSION: The prominent CVSs on SWI can be indicative of acute thromboembolic occlusion and its change immediately after recanalization can be used to reflect the metabolic status. After recanalization, the appearance of the equal CVS (return to normal) on SWI was associated with a favorable clinical outcome and infarction was avoided in our small series study.

RESUMO

Thin-film vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) mounted onto heatsinks open up the way toward low-power consumption and high-power operation, enabling them to be widely used for energy saving high-speed optical data communication and three-dimensional sensor applications. There are two conventional VCSEL polarity structures: p-on-n and n-on-p polarity. The former is more preferably used owing to the reduced series resistance of n-type bottom distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) as well as the lower defect densities of n-type GaAs substrates. In this study, the p-on-n structures of thin-film VCSELs, including an etch stop layer and a highly n-doped GaAs ohmic layer, were epitaxially grown in upright order by using low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD). The p-on-n structures of thin-film VCSELs were transferred onto an aluminum heatsink via a double-transfer technique, allowing the top-emitting thin-film VCSELs to keep the p-on-n polarity with the removal of the GaAs substrate. The threshold current (Ith) and voltage (Vth) of the fabricated top-emitting thin-film VCSELs were 1 mA and 2.8 V, respectively. The optical power was 7.7 mW at a rollover point of 16.1 mA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating whether the length of stay (LOS) in the emergency department (ED) is associated with mortality in elderly patients with infections admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Delayed admission to the ICU may be associated with adverse clinical outcomes in elderly patients with infections. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted with subjects over 65 years of age admitted to the ICU from 5 EDs. We recorded demographic data, clinical findings, initial laboratory results, and ED LOS. Outcomes were all-cause in-hospital mortality and hospital LOS. A multivariable regression model was applied to identify factors predictive of mortality. RESULTS: A total of 439 patients admitted to the ICU via the ED were included in this study, 132 (30.1%) of whom died in the hospital. The median (IQR) age was 78 (73, 83) years. In multivariable analysis, a history of malignancy (OR: 3.76; 95% CI: 1.88-7.52; p < 0.001), high lactate level (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.01-1.27; p=0.039), and ED LOS (OR: 1.01; 95% CI: 1.00-1.02; p=0.039) were independent risk factors for all-cause in-hospital admission. Elderly patients with an ED LOS >12 hours had a longer hospital LOS (p=0.018), and those with an ED LOS > 24 hours had a longer hospital LOS and higher mortality rate (p=0.044, p=0.008). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that prolonged ED LOS is independently associated with all-cause in-hospital mortality in elderly patients with infections requiring ICU admission. ED LOS should be considered in strategies to prevent adverse outcomes in elderly patients with infections who visit the ED.

RESUMO

We demonstrated the exciplex emission of supramolecular polymers (Bipy-1) possessing bipyridine and pyrene moieties. The distinctive exciplex emission of the supramolecular polymers was controlled by tuning the molecular conformation in different composition ratios of a mixed DMSO/H2O solution. The strong exciplex emission of the supramolecular polymer I with yellow emission was a consequence of the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions in a mixed DMSO/H2O (60 : 40-1 : 99 v/v) solution.

RESUMO

The time-of-flight (ToF) principle is a method used to measure distance and construct three-dimensional (3D) images by detecting the time or the phase difference between emitted and back-reflected optical flux. The ToF principle has been employed for various applications including light ranging and detection (LiDAR), machine vision and biomedical engineering; however, bulky system size and slow switching speed have hindered the widespread application of ToF technology. To alleviate these issues, a demonstration of hetero-integration of GaN-based high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) and GaAs-based vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) on a single platform via a cold-welding method was performed. The hetero-integrated ToF sensors show superior switching performance when compared to silicon-transistor-based systems, miniaturizing size and exhibiting stable ranging and high-resolution depth-imaging. This hetero-integrated system of dissimilar material-based high-performance devices suggests a new pathway towards enabling high-resolution 3D imaging and inspires broader range application of heterogeneously integrated electronics and optoelectronics.

RESUMO

A novel cyanostilbene derivative as a selective fluorescent chemoprobe for hydroxyl radicals was synthesized. The chemoprobe shows strong green emission in aqueous solution with the addition of hydroxyl radicals. Conversely, negligible emission changes are observed upon addition of other reactive oxygen species. The chemoprobe 1 shows high sensitivity, having the low detection limit of ∼1.0 × 10-7 M. Furthermore, the fluorescent chemoprobe exhibits low cytotoxicity and is effectively applied to bioimaging of hydroxyl radicals by two-photon confocal microscopy in HeLa cells. These results indicate that the new chemoprobe has great potential for bioimaging in vivo and in vitro systems.

RESUMO

We report self-assembled novel triphenylphosphonium-conjugated dicyanostilbene-based as selective fluorescence turn-on probes for ¹O2 and ClO-. Mono- or di-triphenylphosphonium-conjugated dicyanostilbene derivatives 1 and 2 formed spherical structures with diameters of ca. 27 and 56.5 nm, respectively, through π-π interaction between dicyanostilbene groups. Self-assembled 1 showed strong fluorescent emission upon the addition of ¹O2 and ClO- compared to other ROS (O2-, •OH, NO, TBHP, H2O2, GSH), metal ions (K⁺, Na⁺), and amino acids (cysteine and histidine). Upon addition of ¹O2 and ClO-, the spherical structure of 1 changed to a fiber structure (8-nm wide; 300-nm long). Upon addition of ¹O2 and ClO-, the chemical structural conversion of 1 was determined by FAB-Mass, NMR, IR and Zeta potential analysis, and the strong emission of the self-assembled 1 was due to an aggregation-induced emission enhancement. This self-assembled material was the first for selective ROS as a fluorescence turn-on probe. Thus, a nanostructure change-derived turn-on sensing strategy for ¹O2 or ClO- may offer a new approach to developing methods for specific guest molecules in biological and environmental subjects.

RESUMO

Caspases and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) are activated in tumor cells during induction of apoptosis. We investigated the signaling cascade and function of these enzymes in cisplatin-induced apoptosis. Treatment of Jurkat T-cells with cisplatin induced cell death with DNA fragmentation and activation of caspase and JNK. Bcl-2 overexpression suppressed activation of both enzymes, whereas p35 and CrmA inhibited only the DEVDase (caspase-3-like) activity, indicating that the activation of these enzymes may be differentially regulated. Cisplatin induced apoptosis with the cytochrome c release and caspase-3 activation in both wild-type and caspase-8-deficient JB-6 cells, while the Fas antibody induced these apoptotic events only in wild-type cells. This indicates that caspase-8 activation is required for Fas-mediated apoptosis, but not cisplatin-induced cell death. On the other hand, cisplatin induced the JNK activation in both the wild-type and JB-6 cells, and the caspase-3 inhibitor Z-DEVD-fmk did not inhibit this activation. The JNK overexpression resulted in a higher JNK activity, AP-1 DNA binding activity, and metallothionein expression than the empty vector-transfected cells following cisplatin treatment. It also partially protected the cells from cisplatin-induced apoptosis by decreasing DEVDase activity. These data suggest that the cisplatin-induced apoptotic signal is initiated by the caspase-8-independent cytochrome c release, and the JNK activation protects cells from cisplatin-induced apoptosis via the metallothionein expression.
