RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the isolated effects of NaHCO3 on cycling time-trial performance. Furthermore, we investigated whether the ingestion time of NaHCO3, standardized or individualized based on time to peak, could be effective in improving cycling time-trial performance. A systematic review was carried out on randomized placebo-controlled studies. A random-effects meta-analysis assessed the standardized mean difference (SMD) between NaHCO3 and placebo conditions. Eighteen studies were qualitatively (systematic review) and quantitatively (meta-analysis) analysed concerning mean power output (Wmean) (n = 182) and time performance (n = 201). The reviewed studies showed a low risk of bias and homogenous results for Wmean (I2 = 0%) and performance time (I2 = 0%). Overall, when compared to placebo, the NaHCO3 ingestion improved the Wmean (SMD: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.21-0.63; P = 0.001) and performance time (SMD: 0.22; 95% CI: 0.02-0.43; P = 0.03). Similarly, the NaHCO3 ingestion using a time-to-peak strategy improved the Wmean (SMD: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.03-0.75; P = 0.04; I2 = 15%) and performance time (SMD: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.07-0.61, P = 0.01, I2 = 0%). The present findings reveal that NaHCO3 ingestion has the potential to increase the overall performance time and Wmean in cycling time trials.HighlightsNaHCO3 is an effective strategy to increase cycling time-trial performance.The standardized protocol did not improve the cycling time-trial performance parameters.The individualized time-to-peak NaHCO3 ingestion has a positive effect on time and Wmean during cycling time-trial performance.

Objective: No study has analyzed the effects of caffeine ingestion on performance during a multidirectional high-intensity intermittent exercise. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effects of caffeine ingestion during a novel repeated agility test in futsal athletes.Methods: Using a double-blind, counterbalanced, and repeated-measures design, ten athletes (mass 71.2 ± 8.7 kg, height 1.77 ± 0.05 m, body mass index 22.7 ± 1.9 km/m2, body fat percentage 10.2 ± 3.7%) performed a novel repeated-bout agility test 60 min after ingesting 6 mg · kg-1 of caffeine or cellulose (placebo).Results: Performance time decreased progressively throughout the trial in both conditions (P = 0.01; ηp2 = 0.66), with a significant interaction effect (P = 0.01; ηp2 = 0.35) showing a potential beneficial effect of caffeine at the beginning, followed by a decrease at the end of the test. Furthermore, magnitude of decrease in performance was more pronounced in caffeine (-9.0 ± 5.7%) compared with placebo (-4.7 ± 3.9%, P = 0.01; d = 0.88). Interestingly, magnitude-based inferences revealed a possible benefit (70%) of caffeine at the beginning, followed by likely (93%) to very likely (96%) impairments in performance during the last third of the test. Heart rate and rating of perceived effort increased in both conditions over the time (P < 0.05), with similar values between experimental conditions (P > 0.05).Conclusion: Caffeine seems to have a potential beneficial effect at the beginning, with an impaired performance during the final third of a new multidirectional high-intensity intermittent exercise in futsal athletes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of caffeine ingestion on upper-body intermittent strength endurance performance of combat sports athletes. Using a double-blind and placebo-controlled crossover design, ten experienced judo and jiu-jitsu athletes performed an upper-body intermittent strength endurance protocol (four set of judogi dynamic strength endurance test, interspersed by 3-min recovery intervals) 60 min after ingesting either caffeine (5 mg·kg-1) or placebo. Compared with placebo condition, caffeine ingestion significantly increased the total number of repetitions (+ 7%, P = 0.04; d = 0.44) and the maximal isometric handgrip strength (+ 5%, P = 0.03, ηp2 = 0.41). Rating of perceived exertion, heart rate and blood lactate concentration increased linearly throughout the test (P < 0.05), but without significant differences between caffeine and placebo conditions (P > 0.05). Caffeine ingestion improved the upper-body intermittent strength endurance performance and maximal isometric strength of combat sports athletes. This suggests that caffeine could help to maintain high levels of maximal handgrip and endurance strength in upper limbs, especially forearm muscles, which are responsible for maintaining the grip on the opponent's judogi.Highlights Caffeine ingestion improved upper-body intermittent strength endurance of grappling athletes.Caffeine ingestion increased maximal isometric handgrip strength of grappling athletes.Heart rate, lactate concentration or rating of perceived exertion were not affected by caffeine ingestion.Our findings suggest that caffeine could help to maintain high levels of maximal handgrip and endurance strength in upper limbs, especially forearm muscles, which are responsible for maintaining the grip on the opponent's judogi.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effect of preexercise metabolic acidosis and alkalosis on power output (PO) and aerobic and anaerobic energy expenditure during a 4-km cycling time trial (TT). METHODS: Eleven recreationally trained cyclists (V˙O2peak 54.1 ± 9.3 mL·kg·min) performed a 4-km TT 100 min after ingesting in a double-blind matter 0.15 g·kg of body mass of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl, acidosis), 0.3 g·kg of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3, alkalosis), or 0.15 g·kg of CaCO3 (placebo). A preliminary study (n = 7) was conducted to establish the optimal doses to promote the desirable preexercise blood pH alterations without gastrointestinal distress. Data for PO, aerobic and anaerobic energy expenditure, and blood and respiratory parameters were averaged for each 1 km and compared between conditions using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA (condition and distance factors). Gastrointestinal discomfort was analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: Compared with placebo (pH 7.37 ± 0.02, [HCO3]: 27.5 ± 2.6 mmol·L), the NaHCO3 ingestion resulted in a preexercise blood alkalosis (pH +0.06 ± 0.04, [HCO3]: +4.4 ± 2.0 mmol·L, P < 0.05), whereas NH4Cl resulted in a blood acidosis (pH -0.05 ± 0.03, [HCO3]: -4.8 ± 2.1 mmol·L, P < 0.05). Anaerobic energy expenditure rate and PO were reduced throughout the trial in NH4Cl compared with placebo and NaHCO3, resulting in a lower total anaerobic work and impaired performance (P < 0.05). Plasma lactate, V˙CO2, and end-tidal CO2 partial pressure were lower and the V˙E/V˙CO2 higher throughout the trial in NH4Cl compared with placebo and NaHCO3 (P < 0.05). There was no difference between NaHCO3 and placebo for any of these variables (P > 0.05). Minimal gastrointestinal distress was noted in all conditions. CONCLUSION: Preexercise acidosis, but not alkalosis, affects anaerobic metabolism and PO during a 4-km cycling TT.

PURPOSE: For the first time, we investigated the effects of altering cellular metabolic capacitance, via a 5-d creatine (Cr) loading protocol (20 g·d⁻¹), on oxygen uptake (VO2), accumulated oxygen deficit, muscle recruitment, and performance during a 1-km cycling time trial. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design, 19 amateur cyclists were allocated to a Cr (n = 10, VO2peak = 56.0 ± 7.8 mL·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) or placebo (n = 9, VO2peak = 56.0 ± 8.4 mL·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) group, and performed a 1-km cycling time trial before and after the supplementation period. RESULTS: Body mass was significantly increased in the Cr group (P < 0.05), but not in the placebo group. Participants adopted an "all-out" pacing strategy in both groups. However, Cr loading reduced VO2 immediately after the beginning (12th to 23th seconds), and this was accompanied by a reduced aerobic and increased anaerobic contribution. The VO2 mean response time was slower (pre: 17.2 ± 5.6 s vs post: 19.9 ± 4.6 s), the total O2 uptake was reduced (pre: 4.64 ± 0.59 L vs post: 4.47 ± 0.53 L), and the oxygen deficit was increased (pre: 0.82 ± 0.27 L vs post: 0.98 ± 0.25 L) after Cr loading. No differences were observed in the placebo group for these variables. Plasma lactate and integrated electromyography were not altered in either group, nor was the time to complete the trial (Cr group: pre: 89.1 ± 6.7 s vs post 89.1 ± 6.2 s and placebo group: pre 85.9 ± 4.9 s vs post 87.0 ± 5.4 s). CONCLUSION: Cr loading slows the V˙O2 response and increases the anaerobic contribution during a 1-km cycling time trial.

We analyzed the influence of prior exercise designed to reduce predominantly muscle glycogen in either type I or II fibers on pacing and performance during a 4-km cycling time trial (TT). After preliminary and familiarization trials, in a randomized, repeated-measures crossover design, ten amateur cyclists performed: 1) an exercise designed to reduce glycogen of type I muscle fibers, followed by a 4-km TT (EX-FIB I); 2) an exercise designed to reduce glycogen of type II muscle fibers, followed by a 4-km TT (EX-FIB II) and; 3) a 4-km TT, without the prior exercise (CONT). The muscle-glycogen-reducing exercise in both EX-FIB I and EX-FIB II was performed in the evening, ∼12 h before the 4-km TT. Performance time was increased and power output (PO) was reduced in EX-FIB I (432.8±8.3 s and 204.9±10.9 W) and EX-FIB II (428.7±6.7 s and 207.5±9.1 W) compared to CONT (420.8±6.4 s and 218.4±9.3 W; P<0.01), without a difference between EX-FIB I and EX-FIB II (P>0.05). The PO was lower in EX-FIB I than in CONT at the beginning and middle of the trial (P<0.05). The mean aerobic contribution during EX-FIB I was also significantly lower than in CONT (P<0.05), but there was no difference between CONT and EX-FIB II or between EX-FIB I and EX-FIB II (P>0.05). The integrated electromyography was unchanged between conditions (P>0.05). Performance may have been impaired in EX-FIB I due a more conservative pacing at the beginning and middle, which was associated with a reduced aerobic contribution. In turn, the PO profile adopted in EX-FIB II was also reduced throughout the trial, but the impairment in performance may be attributed to a reduced glycolytic contribution (i.e. reduced lactate accumulation).

The relationship between carbohydrate (CHO) availability and exercise performance has been thoroughly discussed. CHO improves performance in both prolonged, low-intensity and short, high-intensity exercises. Most studies have focused on the effects of CHO supplementation on the performance of constant-load, time-to-exhaustion exercises. Nevertheless, in the last 20 years, there has been a consistent increase in research on the effects of different forms of CHO supplementation (e.g., diet manipulation, CHO supplementation before or during exercise) on performance during closed-loop exercises, such as cycling time trials (TTs). A TT is a highly reproducible exercise and reflects a more realistic scenario of competition compared with the time-to-exhaustion test. CHO manipulation has been performed in various time periods, such as days before, minutes before, during a TT or in a matched manner (e.g. before and during a TT). The purpose of this review is to address the possible effects of these different forms of CHO manipulation on the performance during a cycling TT. Previous data suggest that when a high-CHO diet (~70% of CHO) is consumed before a TT (24-72 h before), the mean power output increases and reduces the TT time. When participants are supplemented with CHO (from 45 to 400 g) prior to a TT (from 2 min to 6 h before the TT), mean power output and time seem to improve due to an increase in CHO oxidation. Similarly, this performance also seems to increase when participants ingest CHO during a TT because such consumption maintains plasma glucose levels. A CHO mouth rinse also improves performance by activating several brain areas related to reward and motor control through CHO receptors in the oral cavity. However, some studies reported controversial results concerning the benefits of CHO on TT performance. Methodological issues such as time of supplementation, quantity, concentration and type of CHO ingested, as well as the TT duration and intensity, should be considered in future studies because small variations in any of these factors may have beneficial or adverse effects on TT performance.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of caffeine ingestion on pacing strategy and energy expenditure during a 4000-m cycling time-trial (TT). Eight recreationally-trained male cyclists volunteered and performed a maximal incremental test and a familiarization test on their first and second visits, respectively. On the third and fourth visits, the participants performed a 4000-m cycling TT after ingesting capsules containing either caffeine (5 mg.kg(-1) of body weight, CAF) or cellulose (PLA). The tests were applied in a double-blind, randomized, repeated-measures, cross-over design. When compared to PLA, CAF ingestion increased mean power output [219.1±18.6 vs. 232.8±21.4 W; effect size (ES)  = 0.60 (95% CI = 0.05 to 1.16), p = 0.034] and reduced the total time [419±13 vs. 409±12 s; ES = -0.71 (95% CI = -0.09 to -1.13), p = 0.026]. Furthermore, anaerobic contribution during the 2200-, 2400-, and 2600-m intervals was significantly greater in CAF than in PLA (p<0.05). However, the mean anaerobic [64.9±20.1 vs. 57.3±17.5 W] and aerobic [167.9±4.3 vs. 161.8±11.2 W] contributions were similar between conditions (p>0.05). Similarly, there were no significant differences between CAF and PLA for anaerobic work (26363±7361 vs. 23888±6795 J), aerobic work (68709±2118 vs. 67739±3912 J), or total work (95245±8593 vs. 91789±7709 J), respectively. There was no difference for integrated electromyography, blood lactate concentration, heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion between the conditions. These results suggest that caffeine increases the anaerobic contribution in the middle of the time trial, resulting in enhanced overall performance.

The purpose this study was to examine the effects of caffeine ingestion on performance and energy expenditure (anaerobic and aerobic contribution) during a 4-km cycling time trial (TT) performed after a carbohydrate (CHO) availability-lowering exercise protocol. After preliminary and familiarization trials, seven amateur cyclists performed three 4-km cycling TT in a double-blind, randomized and crossover design. The trials were performed either after no previous exercise (CON), or after a CHO availability-lowering exercise protocol (DEP) performed in the previous evening, followed by either placebo (DEP-PLA) or 5 mg.kg(-1) of caffeine intake (DEP-CAF) 1 hour before the trial. Performance was reduced (-2.1%) in DEP-PLA vs CON (421.0±12.3 vs 412.4±9.7 s). However, performance was restored in DEP-CAF (404.6±17.1 s) compared with DEP-PLA, while no differences were found between DEP-CAF and CON. The anaerobic contribution was increased in DEP-CAF compared with both DEP-PLA and CON (67.4±14.91, 47. 3±14.6 and 55.3±14.0 W, respectively), and this was more pronounced in the first 3 km of the trial. Similarly, total anaerobic work was higher in DEP-CAF than in the other conditions. The integrated electromyographic activity, plasma lactate concentration, oxygen uptake, aerobic contribution and total aerobic work were not different between the conditions. The reduction in performance associated with low CHO availability is reversed with caffeine ingestion due to a higher anaerobic contribution, suggesting that caffeine could access an anaerobic "reserve" that is not used under normal conditions.

ABSTRACT The relationship between metabolic acidosis and athletic performance has been investigated over the years through manipulation of the blood and muscle pH. Among the pH manipulation manners, the ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is the most widely used chemical component when is intentioned to induce a blood acidosis status prior to exercise. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the action of this substance on athletic performance as only two studies were performed in the last 15 years. Thus, it will be addressed in the present review the main aspects involved in NH4Cl ingestion, giving a focus to the action mechanisms of this substance, specifications about the used dose and their effects on athletic performance.


RESUMO A relação entre a acidose metabólica e o desempenho esportivo tem sido investigada ao longo dos anos através de manipulações do pH sanguíneo e muscular. Entre as formas de manipulação do pH, o cloreto de amônio (NH4Cl) é o componente químico mais utilizado quando se pretende induzir um estado de acidose sanguínea previamente ao exercício. Entretanto, investigações acerca da ação desse agente sobre o desempenho esportivo ainda podem ser consideradas escassas, quando foram realizados apenas dois estudos nos últimos 15 anos. Dessa forma, serão abordados na presente revisão os principais aspectos envolvidos na ingestão de NH4Cl, dando um enfoque aos mecanismos de ação dessa substância, especificações acerca do tipo de dose utilizada e seus efeitos sobre o desempenho esportivo.

RESUMO A escolha do pacing é determinante para o sucesso esportivo, mas a análise de pequenas alterações no pacing necessita de mais estudos. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar parâmetros na curva de desempenho em contrarrelógio de ciclismo para investigar variações dopacing e sua reprodutibilidade. A análise por trechos da prova também foi realizada. 19 ciclistas amadores realizaram dois testes de 4-km, no qual foram analisados parâmetros nas curvas de desempenho individuais e a potência média dos trechos da prova. O tempo e a potência média foram similares entre os testes. Não houve diferença entre os parâmetros observados na curva de desempenho comparando o teste 1 e 2, mas estes mostraram alto valor de erro típico da medida. A análise por trechos da prova foi mais consistente, sendo uma opção para analisar o pacing. Apesar de um desempenho consistente no contrarrelógio de 4-km, os parâmetros determinados apresentaram grande variação intraindividual.


ABSTRACT The selection of pacing is determinant for the sport success, but the analysis of modest variations in pacing requires further studies. The purpose of this study was to determine parameters in the performance curve on cycling time trial to investigate pacing variations and reproducibility. The test sections analysis was also performed. 19 amateur cyclists performed two tests of 4-km, in which parameters were analyzed in the individual performance curves and the average power of the test sections. The time and the average power were similar between tests. There was no difference between the parameters observed in the performance curve comparing the test 1 and 2, but these showed a high value of typical error. The test portions analysis was more consistent, with an alternative to analyze pacing. Despite consistent performance in time trial 4-km, the parameters determined varied widely between individuals.

Em competições de natação de longa distância não está bem estabelecida qual a estratégia de prova (EP) ótima. Desta forma, o objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar as EP adotadas por atletas de nível internacional em provas de natação de 800m (feminino) e 1500m (masculino) crawl. Foram analisadas as parciais de tempo (a cada 50m) dos atletas (n = 60) participantes das semifinais e finais dos últimos três campeonatos mundiais de natação, ocorridos no período de 2006 a 2010. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do teste estatístico CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection), que é uma estatística χ2 (qui-quadrado) para detectar comportamento de homogeneidade entre as variáveis. Os principais resultados encontrados foram: para as duas provas analisadas, o comportamento da velocidade em função do tempo mostrou-se semelhante à estratégia parabólica (formato em U), caracterizada por um início significativamente mais rápido (P < 0,05), seguido por uma diminuição do ritmo no trecho médio da prova, quando ocorre um novo aumento significativo (P < 0,05) na velocidade no trecho final. Desta forma, tais achados indicam que este perfil de EP pode ser classificado como ótimo para as provas de natação consideradas de longa duração, visto que foi o perfil preferencialmente adotado por atletas de nível mundial.


In long distance swimming competitions, the optimal pacing strategy is not well established. The objective of this study was to characterize the pacing strategy adopted by international level athletes in 800-m (female) and 1500-m (male) crawl swimming events. We analyzed the time of each 50 m splits for semi-finalists and finalists athletes of the last three world swimming championships from 2006 to 2010. The data analysis was performed through the statistic method named CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection), which is a statistic χ2 to detect a homogeneity behavior among the variables. The main results found were: for the two events analyzed, the velocity-versus-distance curve was similar to the parabolic pacing strategy (U-shaped), characterized by a significantly faster start (p<0.05) than mean velocity for the race, followed by a gradual decline in velocity in the middle splits, when athletes increase the velocity again (p<0.05) to produce an end spurt. In conclusion, these findings indicate that this pacing strategy profile can be classified as optimal for the long distance swimming events since it was preferentially adopted by international level athletes.

Tem sido sugerido que a participação do metabolismo anaeróbio alático (MAA) pode ser estimada a partir do cálculo da fase rápida do excesso do consumo de oxigênio após o exercício (EPOC RÁPIDO). Considerando que o Déficit Máximo Acumulado de Oxigênio (MAOD) representa a quantidade total de energia transferida pelos metabolismos anaeróbios, o objetivo desse estudo foi analisar se o método de subtrair o EPOC RÁPIDO do MAOD (MAOD LA-1) proporciona uma estimativa satisfatória do metabolismo anaeróbio lático (MAL). Para esse fim, o MAOD LA-1 foi comparado ao método capaz de expressar em equivalente de oxigênio a energia oriunda do acúmulo de lactato no sangue (MAOD LA-2). Nove homens adultos ativos foram submetidos a quatro sessões experimentais: 1) um teste progressivo até a exaustão em um cicloergômetro para a mensuração do consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max) e da potência externa correspondente ao VO2max (WVO2max); 2 e 3) seis testes de cargas constantes (3 testes por sessão) com intensidades abaixo da WVO2max; 4) um teste de carga constante com a intensidade equivalente a 110% da WVO2max. O principal achado foi que os dois métodos (MAOD LA-1 e MAOD LA-2) empregados na estimativa da contribuição do MAL no MAOD geraram valores estatisticamente similares (p > 0,05). Além disso, os valores percentuais do MAOD LA-1 (representando o MAL) e do EPOC RÁPIDO (representando o MAA) foram de aproximadamente 78% e 22%, respectivamente. Logo, os procedimentos propostos na presente investigação podem auxiliar futuros trabalhos que porventura objetivem fragmentar as contribuições dos componentes anaeróbio do MAOD.


It has been suggested that the participation of alactic anaerobic metabolism (AAM) in physical activity can be estimated by calculating the fast component of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC FAST). Considering that maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) represents the total amount of energy transferred by anaerobic metabolisms, this study aimed to analyze whether subtracting EPOC FAST from MAOD (MAOD LA-1) provides a satisfactory estimate of lactic anaerobic metabolism (LAM). For this purpose, MAOD LA-1 was compared with the method by which the energy derived from blood lactate accumulation (MAOD LA-2) is expressed as oxygen equivalent. Nine active adult men were submitted to four experimental sessions: 1) a maximal incremental exercise test until exhaustion on a cycle ergometer to measure the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and the external power corresponding to VO2max (WVO2max); 2) and 3) six constant-workload tests (3 per session) at intensities below WVO2max; 4) one constant-workload test at an intensity corresponding to 110% of WVO2max. The main finding was that both methods (MAOD LA-1 e MAOD LA-2) that were used to estimate the contribution of LAM in MAOD resulted in similar statistical values (p > 0.05). In addition, percentage values of MAOD LA-1 (representing MAL) and EPOC FAST (representing AAM) were approximately 78 and 22%, respectively. O objetivo do estudo foi estimar as contribuições do metabolismo anaeróbio lático (MAL) e alático (MAA) em intensidades abaixo do consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max). Dez homens (23 ± 4 anos, 176,4 ± 6,8 cm, 72,4 ± 8,2 kg, 12,0 ± 4,5 % de gordura corporal) realizaram um teste progressivo até a exaustão voluntária para identificação do VO2max, da potência correspondente ao VO2max (WVO2max) e do segundo limiar ventilatório (LV2). Na segunda e na terceira visita foram realizados seis testes de cargas constantes (três testes por sessão) com intensidades abaixo do VO2max. Houve uma predominância do MAL sobre o MAA durante os exercícios submáximos a partir da intensidade correspondente ao LV2, sendo significativamente maior em 90% VO2max (p < 0,05). Dessa forma, esses resultados podem auxiliar treinadores a aplicarem cargas de treinamento adequadas aos seus atletas, de acordo com a exigência metabólica da competição...


The purpose this study was that estimated contributions of the anaerobic lactic (MAL) and alactic (MAA) metabolism during constant load exercises at intensities below the maximal oxygen capacity uptake (VO2max). Ten males (23 ± 4 years, 176.4 ± 6.8 cm, 72.4 ± 8.2 kg, 12.0 ± 4.5 % of fat body) performed in the first visit a progressive test until exhaustion to identification of VO2max, power output corresponding to the VO2max (WVO2max) and second ventilatory threshold (LV2). On the second and third visit, the participants performed six constant workload tests (3 per session) with intensities below VO2max. There was a predominance of MAL about MAA during the exercises sub-maximal from intensity corresponding to the LV2, being significantly higher at 90% VO2max (p < 0.05). Thus, these results may help coaches to implement training loads appropriate to their athletes, according to the metabolic demand of the competition...
