Chromosomal Microarray Analysis (CMA) has increased the comprehension of the mechanisms of copy number variation (CNV) formation, classification of these rearrangements, type of recurrence, and its origin, and has also been a powerful approach to identifying CNVs in individuals with intellectual disability. The aim of this study was to establish the parental origin of de novo pathogenic CNV in a cohort of patients with intellectual disability from the public health system of Goiás-Brazil. CMA was done in 76 trios and we identified 15 de novo pathogenic CNVs in 12 patients with intellectual disability. In a total of 15 de novo pathogenic CNV, 60% were derived from the maternal germline and 40% from the paternal germline. CNV flanked by low copy repeats (LCR) were identified in 46.7% and most of them were of maternal origin. No significant association was observed between paternal age and the mutation rate of de novo CNVs. The presence of high-identity LCRs increases the occurrence of CNV formation mediated by non-allelic homologous recombination and the majority of paternal CNVs are non-recurrent. The mechanism of formation of these CNV may have been by microhomology-mediated break-induced replication or non-homologous end joining.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of potential drug-drug interactions involving psychotropics prescribed by dentists, and dispensed by the public healthcare system, as well as to describe the severity and level of evidence of those interactions in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted data analysis from pharmaceutical claims in which dental patients received systemic psychotropics in 2017. Data from the Pharmaceutical Management System provided the drug dispensing history of the patients, allowing the identification of those on concomitant medication use. The outcome was the occurrence of potential drug-drug interactions, which were detected according to IBM Micromedex®. Independent variables were the patient's sex, age, and the number of drugs used. Descriptive statistics was performed using SPSS v. 26. RESULTS: Overall, 1480 individuals were prescribed psychotropic drugs. The prevalence of potential drug-drug interactions was 24.8% (n = 366). The total of 648 interactions was observed and, most of which were of major severity (n = 438, 67.6%). Most interactions occurred in female individuals (n = 235; 64.2%), with 46.0 (±17.3) years-old, concurrently taking 3.7 (±1.9) drugs. CONCLUSION: A substantial proportion of dental patients presented potential drug-drug interactions, mostly of major severity, which might be life-threatening.

Aim To evaluate the association of patients' sociodemographic factors (sex, age, ethnicity, income, educational level, living environment and health insurance) with the prescription pattern of opioids provided by oral health practitioners.Methods Observational studies that evaluated the association of patients' sociodemographic factors and the likelihood of receiving an opioid prescription provided by an oral health practitioner were eligible. Electronic searches were conducted in Medline (PubMed), Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, SciELO, Google Scholar, and OpenGrey up to March 2021. Two authors independently screened the studies, performed data extraction, and assessed the risk-of-bias using the critical appraisal tools developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Certainty of the evidence was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE).Results Eight studies were included in this systematic review. Publication year ranged from 2011 to 2021. Narrative synthesis showed with very low certainty of evidence that younger individuals were more likely to receive a prescription of opioids than older individuals. Regarding the other sociodemographic factors and the prescriptions of opioids in dentistry, the evidence is controversial. Risk of bias was low for most items assessed in the included studies.Conclusion The available evidence suggests that there is an association between patients' sociodemographic factors and the prescription patterns of opioids provided by oral health practitioners.

Arsenic (As) causes health effects, especially cancer. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) can contain high As concentrations. Using ICP-MS, we quantified the total As (tAs) levels in the main brands of rice (n = 103) and infant cereals (n = 27) consumed by Brazilians. The levels were compared to the maximum limits prescribed by regulatory agencies. We estimated the daily intake (EDI) of As by Brazilians by combining the mean As concentration determined in the white rice samples with per capita daily consumption divided by the average body weight as reported by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics in 2010. The possible health risk for consumers was assessed by calculating the margin of exposure (MOE) as prescribed by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Moreover, tAs was determined in 11 pesticides used by Brazilian farmers. The tAs levels in the rice ranged from 0.003 to 1.3 mg kg-1. Approximately 27% of the white rice contained tAs levels above the limit set by Mercosul (0.3 mg kg-1) and 45% were above the limit set by the European Commission (0.2 mg kg-1). In the infant cereals, tAs levels ranged from 0.003 to 0.243 mg kg-1. In the pesticides, tAs levels ranged from 0.005 to 0.315 mg L-1. The EDI showed that, on average, Brazilians consume 4.13 µg As kg-1 BW weekly. In addition, a low MOE was observed, demonstrating that high use of rice presents a risk of high inorganic (iAs) exposure, which represents a public health concern.

Vehicles are quite possibly the main sources of particulate matter, and their emissions can cause damage to surrounding ecosystems. Traditional atmospheric monitoring, however, is expensive. Therefore, airborne biomonitoring is an alternative method that allows for air quality assessment. In this study, we evaluated air quality at a federal highway (BR-040) close to Atlantic Rainforest remnants by quantifying metals in biomonitor tissues by ICP-MS. Tillandsia usneoides and Tillandsia stricta plants were relocated to the investigation zone and collected after five months of exposure. Metal concentration profiles were evaluated using statistical analyses, namely exposure-to-reference (ER) ratios and enrichment factors (EF). Results indicate that V, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn and Sn enrichment were observed in all study sites. The EF for Cr, Mn, Pb, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Sn ranged from high to very high, indicating anthropogenic sources. Both species were effective atmospheric biomonitors, proving to be an important tool, mainly in areas where conventional monitoring is not possible.

In the present study, an urban and industrial area were evaluated through a biomonitoring study employing the Tillandsia purpurea and T. latifolia species as a biomonitor. Plants were collected from a non-contaminated area and transplanted and exposed for three months into study areas to determine metal accumulation. Sixteen elements (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, V, and Zn) were measured using ICP-MS analysis. Datasets were assessed by one-way ANOVA, exposed-to-baseline (EB) ratio, and principal component analysis. Results showed significant differences among study areas for most elements, but no differences were found between species. According to EB ratios, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn showed EB ratios > 1.75 for both Tillandsia species around the industrial area, indicating influence from the Smelter plant. Ba, Sb, and Zn showed EB ratios > .1.75 in the urban area for both plants, indicating the releasing of pollutants from vehicular sources. PCA showed that most elements are derived from vehicular sources, industrial activities, and dust resuspension.

The air quality and distribution of trace elements in a metropolitan area of the Peruvian Andes were evaluated using transplanted epiphytic Tillandsia capillaris as biomonitors. Biomonitors were collected from the non-contaminated area and exposed to five sites with different types of contamination for three months in 2017. After exposure, the content of twenty-one elements were determined by ICP-MS analysis. Datasets were evaluated by one-way ANOVA, exposed-to-baseline (EB), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Results showed significant differences among sampling sites for several elements. According to EF ratios for Ba, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn EB ratios value greater than 1.75 were found around urban areas, indicating anthropogenic influence, which can be attributed to vehicular sources. The highest values of As and Cd were found in areas of agricultural practices, therefore their presence could be related to the employment of agrochemicals (pesticides, herbicides, and phosphate fertilizers). HCA shows that most elements come from vehicular sources and lower from agricultural and natural sources.

Objective: To describe personal noise exposure measurements obtained on Guatemala sugar cane mill workers as a function of job category.Design: This is a descriptive evaluation of existing data.Sample: The data set included 51 representative noise dosimetry surveys utilising NIOSH sampling protocol, completed on workers performing 21 jobs in a Guatemalan sugar cane mill. Results: Noise doses ranged from a low of 50.9% to an extreme of 25174%. The highest observed mean noise doses were for evaporator cleaners (15761%) and juice extractors (2047%). Ninety percent of noise dosimetry samples were between 50% to 1200% dose. Annual noise exposures are also reported after considering the 7-month seasonal work schedule.Conclusions: The majority of sugar cane mill workers were exposed to hazardous occupational noise exceeding the Guatemalan permissible exposure limit (GMLSW), which is consistent with U.S. NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 100% noise dose (85 dBA time-weighted average). Consequently, the majority of workers should be enrolled in a hearing conservation programme including engineering noise control in order to prevent long-term adverse effects on workers' hearing.

OBJECTIVE: Agricultural workers worldwide exposed to heat stress could be at the risk of kidney injury, which could lead to chronic kidney disease of an unknown origin (CKDu). Hydration has been promoted as a key measure to reduce kidney injury. In the presence of a hydration intervention, the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) was calculated in a sugarcane worker population in Guatemala and several risk factors were evaluated. METHODS: We measured kidney function at the beginning and end of the work shift at three time points in 517 sugarcane workers. We defined AKI as an increase in serum creatinine of 26.5 µmol/L or 50% or more from the pre-shift value. Associations between AKI and risk factors were examined, including interactions with hydration status. RESULTS: The prevalence of dehydration post-shift (> 1.020 specific gravity) was 11% in February, 9% in March, and 6% in April. Cumulative incidence of AKI was 53% in February, 54% in March, and 51% in April. AKI was associated with increasing post-shift specific gravity, a dehydration marker, (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.02-1.52) and with lower electrolyte solution intake (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.89-0.99). CONCLUSIONS: Dehydration and insufficient electrolyte consumption are risk factors for AKI. However even well-hydrated sugarcane workers routinely experience AKI. While hydration is important and protective, there is a need to understand other contributors to risk of AKI and identify prevention strategies with these workers.

BACKGROUND: Long-term survival for all patients with osteosarcoma using current aggressive adjuvant chemotherapy and surgical resection is between 60% and 70%. In patients who present with nonmetastatic, high-grade extremity osteosarcoma of bone, limb salvage surgery is favored, when appropriate, over amputation to preserve the limb, because limb salvage may lead to a superior quality of life compared with amputation. However, concern remains that in the attempt to preserve the limb, close or microscopically positive surgical margins may have an adverse effect on event-free survival. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does a positive or close surgical margin increase the likelihood of a local recurrence? (2) Does a positive or close surgical margin adversely affect the development of metastatic disease? (3) What is the relationship of surgical margin on overall survival? METHODS: With institutional review board approval, we retrospectively evaluated 241 patients treated at our institution between 1999 and 2011. Exclusion criteria included nonextremity locations, metastatic disease at initial presentation, low- or intermediate-grade osteosarcoma, treatment regimens that did not follow National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, incomplete medical records, and any part of treatment performed outside of Moffitt Cancer Center or All Children's Hospital. Fifty-one patients were included in the final analysis, of whom 31 (61%) had followup data at a minimum of 2 years or whose clinical status was known but had died before 2 years of followup. Margin status was defined as (1) microscopically positive; (2) negative ≤ 1 mm; and (3) negative > 1 mm. Margin status, histologic response (tumor percent necrosis), type of osteosarcoma, type of surgery, presence of local recurrence, metastatic disease, and overall survival were recorded for each patient. The mean age was 22 years (range, 12-74 years) and the mean followup was 3 years (range, 0.1-14 years). Margin status was positive in 10% (five of 51), negative ≤ 1 mm 26% (13 of 51), and negative > 1 mm 65% (33 of 51). RESULTS: Local recurrence was noted to be 14% (seven of 51) at 3.4 years. After controlling for relevant confounding variables, the presence of a positive margin compared with a negative margin > 1 mm was the only independent predictor of local recurrence (hazard ratio [HR], 8.006; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.314-48.781; p = 0.0241). At a mean of 3.4 years, 29% (15 of 51) of the patients developed metastatic disease with no difference with the numbers available in the probability of developing metastatic disease among the three margin groups (p = 0.614). Overall survival at 3.8 years was 75% (38 of 51). After controlling for relevant confounding variables, we found that patients with positive margins were more likely to die from disease than those with negative margins (HR, 6.26; 95% CI, 1.50-26.14; p = 0.0119); no other independent predictors of survival were identified. CONCLUSIONS: With the numbers of patients we had, we observed that patients with extremity, nonmetastatic, high-grade osteosarcoma who had positive margins showed a higher probability of local recurrence in comparison to those with negative surgical margins. Given that positive margins appear to be associated with poorer survival in patients with high-grade osteosarcoma of the extremities, surgeons should strive to achieve negative margins, but larger studies are needed to confirm these findings. BACKGROUND: The objectives are to determine predictors of a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) bounce, whether a PSA bounce after radiotherapy for prostate cancer is associated with biochemical disease-free survival (bDFS), and the time course to a PSA bounce versus a biochemical failure post-irradiation. METHODS: Between July 2000 and December 2012, 691 prostate cancer patients without regional or distant metastases were treated with external beam radiation therapy and/or brachytherapy, and had at least 12 months of follow-up. A PSA bounce was defined as a temporary PSA increase of ≥ 0.4 ng/mL. bDFS was defined according to the nadir + 2 definition. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 42 months. The median time to first PSA bounce was 17 months (95% confidence interval 15-18 months). In contrast, the median time to biochemical failure was 41 months (95% confidence interval 28-53 months). Two hundred and twenty-six of 691 (33%) patients had at least one PSA bounce with a median magnitude of 1.0 ng/mL (range 0.4-17.0). A Gleason score of 6 (p < 0.0001) predicted a PSA bounce on multivariate analysis. Patients with a PSA bounce experienced improved bDFS on multivariate analysis (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a Gleason score of 6 were more likely to experience a PSA bounce which was associated with improved bDFS. A PSA bounce occurred sooner after radiotherapy than a biochemical failure. The authors recommend against performing prostate biopsies within 24-30 months of radiotherapy since an elevated PSA may simply represent a benign PSA bounce.

PURPOSE: To assess outcomes with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and a low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy boost without or with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2001 through August 2011, 120 intermediate-risk or high-risk prostate cancer patients were treated with EBRT to a total dose of 4,500 cGy in 25 daily fractions and a palladium-103 LDR brachytherapy boost of 10,000 cGy (n = 90) or an iodine-125 LDR brachytherapy boost of 11,000 cGy (n = 30). ADT, consisting of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist ± an anti-androgen, was administered to 29/92 (32%) intermediate-risk patients for a median duration of 4 months and 26/28 (93%) high-risk patients for a median duration of 28 months. RESULTS: Median follow-up was 5.2 years (range, 1.1-12.8 years). There was no statistically-significant difference in biochemical disease-free survival (bDFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), or overall survival (OS) without or with ADT. Also, therewas no statistically-significant difference in bDFS, DMFS, or OS with a palladium-103 vs. an iodine-125 LDR brachytherapy boost. CONCLUSIONS: There was no statistically-significant difference in outcomes with the addition of ADT, though the power of the current study was limited. The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 0815 and 0924 phase III trials, which have accrual targets of more than 1,500 men, will help to clarify the role ADT in locally-advanced prostate cancer patients treated with EBRT and a brachytherapy boost. Palladium-103 and iodine- 125 provide similar bDFS, DMFS, and OS.

This study aimed to analyze possible associations between the Infection Control Structure Score (ICSS), health services, and social characteristics of the municipalities in Brazil. Secondary data from the third cycle 2017-2018 of the Brazilian National Program for Improving Primary Care Access and Quality (PMAQ) was analyzed. Six independent variables - FIRJAN Index of Municipal Development, number of inhabitants, number of family health teams receiving a financial incentive from the federal government, healthcare expenditure per capita, and number of Oral Health Teams modalities 1 and 2 - were included to assess their influence on ICSS, measured for each Brazilian town. Data analysis used the Classification and Regression Tree model performed with IBM SPSS 25. A total of 4,900 municipalities were included, and the mean ICSS was 0.905 (±0.092). A positive relationship was observed between healthcare expenditure per capita, municipal development, and the outcome. Conversely, towns with a higher number of family health teams receiving a financial incentive from the federal government showed lower mean ICSS. The findings suggest that inequalities in the infection control structures exist within the country, and they were related to the health services and social characteristics of the municipalities.

With chronic disease prevalence on the rise globally, surveillance and monitoring are critical to improving health outcomes. Point-of-care (POC) testing can facilitate epidemiological research and enhance surveillance systems in limited resource settings, but previous research has identified bias between POC devices and laboratory testing. We compared the performance of two POC blood analyzers, the iSTAT handheld (Abbott, Princeton, NJ, USA) and the StatSensor Creatinine (Nova Biomedical, Waltham, MA, USA) to concurrent blood samples analyzed at a local laboratory that were collected from 89 agricultural workers in Guatemala. We measured creatinine and other measures of underlying health status with the POC and the lab blood samples. Pearson correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, no intercept linear regression models and two-sample t-tests were used to evaluate the agreement between the POC and lab values collected across three study days and to assess differences by study day in a field setting. On average there was no observed difference between the iSTAT and lab creatinine measurements (p = 0.91), regardless of study day. Using lab creatinine as the gold standard, iSTAT creatinine results were more accurate compared to the Statsensor, which showed some bias, especially at higher values. The iSTAT had good agreement with the lab for sodium and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), but showed differences for potassium, anion gap, bicarbonate (TCO2), glucose, and hematocrit. In this tropical field setting, the research team devised a protocol to prevent the devices from overheating. In limited resource settings, POC devices carry advantages compared to traditional lab analyses, providing timely results to patients, researchers, and healthcare systems to better evaluate chronic health conditions. Technical challenges due to use of POC devices in high heat and humidity environments can be addressed using a standard protocol for transporting and operating the devices.

Background: Exposure to extreme heat impacts millions of people worldwide and outdoor workers are among the populations most affected by high temperatures. Heat stress induces several biological responses in humans, including the production of heat shock proteins (HSP) and antibodies against HSP (anti-HSP) which may play a central role in the body's cellular response to a hot environment. Objective: This longitudinal study investigated the impact of high temperatures and humidity on the presence of HSP70 and anti-HSP70 and examined relationships with markers of kidney function in an at-risk workforce under conditions of extreme heat and exertion in Guatemala. Methods: We collected ambient temperature and relative humidity data as well as biomarkers and clinical data from 40 sugarcane workers at the start and the end of a 6-month harvest. We used generalized mixed-effects models to estimate temperature effects on HSP70 and anti-HSP70 levels. In addition, we examined trends between HSP70 and anti-HSP70 levels and markers of kidney function across the harvest. Results: At the end of the harvest, temperatures were higher, and workers had, on average, higher levels of HSP70 and anti-HSP70 compared to the beginning of the season. We observed significant increasing trends with temperature indices and HSP70 levels. Maximum temperature was associated with HSP70 increments after controlling for age, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (ß: 0.21, 95% Confidence Interval: 0.09, 0.33). Kidney function decline across the harvest was associated with both higher levels of anti-HSP70 levels at the end of the harvest as well as greater increases in anti-HSP70 levels across the harvest. Conclusions: These results suggest that workplace heat exposure may increase the production of HSP70 and anti-HSP70 levels and that there may be a relationship between increasing anti-HSP70 antibodies and the development of renal injury. HSP70 holds promise as a biomarker of heat stress in exposed populations.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma account for more than 90% of all esophageal cancer cases. Although the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma has declined, the incidence of adenocarcinoma has risen due to increases in obesity and gastroesophageal reflux disease. METHODS: The authors examine the role of radiation therapy alone (external beam and brachytherapy) for the management of esophageal cancer or combined with other modalities. The impact on staging and appropriate stratification of patients referred for curative vs palliative intent with modalities is reviewed. The authors also explore the role of emerging radiation technologies. RESULTS: Current data show that neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgical resection is the accepted standard of care, with 3-year overall survival rates ranging from 30% to 60%. The benefit of adjuvant radiation therapy is limited to patients with node-positive cancer. The survival benefit of surgical resection after chemoradiotherapy remains controversial. External beam radiation therapy alone results in few long-term survivors and is considered palliative at best. Radiation dose-escalation has failed to improve local control or survival. Brachytherapy can provide better long-term palliation of dysphagia than metal stent placement. Although three-dimensional conformal treatment planning is the accepted standard, the roles of IMRT and proton therapy are evolving and potentially reduce adverse events due to better sparing of normal tissue. CONCLUSIONS: Future directions will evaluate the benefit of induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiotherapy, the role of surgery in locally advanced disease, and the identification of responders prior to treatment based on microarray analysis.

Agro-industrial waste biosorbents of arabica-coffee (WCA) and theobroma-cocoa (WCT) have been characterized and tested to remove Pb(II) from aqueous media. The maximum adsorption capacity of WCA and WCT (qmax = 158.7 and 123.5 mg·g-1, respectively) is comparable or even higher than for several other similar agro-industrial waste biosorbents reported in the literature. Structural and morphological characterization were performed by infrared spectrometry with Fourier transform (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and charge measurements at the zero point charge (pHPZC). Both biosorbents, WCA and WCT, show cracked surfaces with heterogeneous plates which ones include functional adsorption groups such as OH, C = O and C-O-C. Optimal Pb(II) adsorption occurs for a pH between 4 and 5 at [WCA] and [WCT] dose concentrations of 2 g·L-1. We found that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second order kinetics with a rapid growth rate (almost six times larger for WCA than for WCT), basically controlled by the chemisorption process. The regeneration of both biosorbents was carried out in an eluent of 0.1M HNO3 and they can be efficiently reused up to 5 times.

Purpose: As the prevalence of chronic kidney disease of non-traditional origin (CKDnt) rises in low-resource settings, there is a need for reliable point-of-care creatinine testing. The purpose of this analysis was to assess the accuracy of two commonly used point-of-care creatinine devices, the i-STAT handheld (Abbott, Princeton, NJ, USA) and the StatSensor Creatinine (Nova Biomedical, Waltham, MA, USA) in comparison to venipuncture serum creatinine measures. The affordability, sensitivity, specificity, ease of use, and other considerations for each device are also presented. Methods: Three paired data sets were compared. We collected 213 paired i-STAT and venipuncture samples from a community study in Nicaragua in 2015-2016. We also collected 267 paired StatSensor Creatinine and venipuncture samples, including 158 from a community setting in Nicaragua in 2014-2015 and 109 from a Guatemala sugarcane worker cohort in 2017-2018. Pearson correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, and no intercept linear regression models were used to assess agreement between point-of-care devices and blood samples. Results: The i-STAT performed the most accurately, overestimating creatinine by 0.07 mg/dL (95% CI: 0.02, 0.12) with no evidence of proportional bias. The StatSensor Creatinine performed well at low levels of creatinine (Mean (SD): 0.87 (0.19)). Due to proportional bias, the StatSensor Creatinine performed worse in the Nicaragua community setting where creatinine values ranged from 0.31 to 7.04 mg/dL. Discussion: Both devices provide acceptable sensitivity and specificity. Although adequate for routine surveillance, StatSensor Creatinine is less accurate as the values of measured creatinine increase, a consideration when using the point-of-care device for screening individuals at risk for CKDnt. Research, clinical, and screening objectives, cost, ease of use, and background prevalence of disease must all be carefully considered when selecting a point-of-care creatinine device. Conclusion: POC testing can be more accessible in resource-limited settings. The selection of the appropriate device will depend on the use-case.

To describe trends of dentist-prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics, from January 2011 to December 2021, as well as to examine the relationship between these trends and characteristics of public oral health services in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this time-series analysis, all drugs were classified according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification system. Drugs categorized as NSAIDs (M01A), and other analgesics and antipyretics (N02B) were included for analysis. The outcome was the number of Defined Daily Doses (DDDs)/1000 inhabitants/year for NSAIDs and analgesics in each town. Covariates referred to characteristics of public oral health services, such as coverage, estimates of dental procedures, and frequency of toothache. Linear time-series regression models were used to determine the influence of covariates on the outcome. Overall, there were 58,482 prescriptions of NSAIDs recorded in thirty-eight towns, while 47,499 prescriptions of analgesics in forty-three towns. For each year, there was a 0.38 (p < 0.001), and 0.28 (p < 0.001) increase in the average log of DDD/1000 inhabitants/year for NSAIDs and analgesics, respectively. A positive association was detected between toothache (p < 0.001) and the prescription of NSAIDs. Over the eleven years, there was a general rising trend in the prescriptions. Toothache was the only characteristic of public oral health services associated with the prescription rates of NSAIDs, implying that as the frequency of toothaches increase, so do the prescriptions of NSAIDs in the studied towns.
