RESUMO

The rational design of noble metal-free electrocatalysts holds great promise for cost-effective green hydrogen generation through water electrolysis. In this context, here, the development of a superhydrophilic bifunctional electrocatalyst that facilitates both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline conditions is demonstrated. This is achieved through the in situ growth of hierarchical NiMoO4 @CoMoO4 ·xH2 O nanostructure on nickel foam (NF) via a two-step hydrothermal synthesis method. NiMoO4 @CoMoO4 ·xH2 O/NF facilitates OER and HER at the overpotentials of 180 and 220 mV, respectively, at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 . The NiMoO4 @CoMoO4 ·xH2 O/NF ǁ NiMoO4 @CoMoO4 ·xH2 O/NF cell can be operated at a potential of 1.60 V compared to 1.63 V displayed by the system based on the Pt/C@NFǁRuO2 @NF standard electrode pair configuration at 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting. The density functional theory calculations for the OER process elucidate that the lowest ΔG of NiMoO4 @CoMoO4 compared to both Ni and NiMoO4 is due to the presence of Co in the OER catalytic site and its synergistic interaction with NiMoO4 . The preparative strategy and mechanistic understanding make the windows open for the large-scale production of the robust and less expensive electrode material for the overall water electrolysis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prolonged use of N95 masks by healthcare workers might affect physical health due to mask-related hypoxia in addition to the psychological effects of N95 masks. We tried to explore the association of N95 mask-related hypoxia and headache with stress, quality of sleep, and anxiety in the current study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample (N = 78) consisted of 41 doctors and 37 nurses involved in COVID-19 patient care and using N95 masks with or without PPE for at least 4 hours. Perceived stress scale (PSS), Coronavirus anxiety scale (CAS), and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were administered, and physical parameters like heart rate and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured. RESULTS: Around 42% of the study participants experienced headaches after wearing an N95 mask and had a higher increase in heart rate (mean percent:10.5% vs 6.3%) and decline in SpO2 (mean percent: 2.6% vs 1.5%) compared to those who didn't develop a headache after N95 mask use. Independent samples t-test showed a mean difference for PSS and CAS between those who experienced headaches and those who didn't. The mean PSQI scores among the study participants were 8.91 ± 5.78; the score among those participants with and without headache was 10.57 ± 3.11 and 7.68 ± 2.53, respectively. CONCLUSION: Perceived corona anxiety, poor sleep quality, and corona anxiety are associated with N95-related headaches and SpO2 drop among health professionals who wear N95 masks for at least 4 hours.

RESUMO

Non-host resistance (NHR), which protects all members of a plant species from non-adapted or non-host plant pathogens, is the most common form of plant immunity. NHR provides the most durable and robust form of broad-spectrum immunity against non-adaptive pathogens pathogenic to other crop species. In a mutant screen for loss of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) NHR against the soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) pathogen Phytophthora sojae, the Phytophthora sojae-susceptible 30 (pss30) mutant was identified. The pss30 mutant is also susceptible to the soybean pathogen Fusarium virguliforme. PSS30 encodes a folate transporter, AtFOLT1, which was previously localized to chloroplasts and implicated in the transport of folate from the cytosol to plastids. We show that two Arabidopsis folate biosynthesis mutants with reduced folate levels exhibit a loss of non-host immunity against P. sojae. As compared to the wild-type Col-0 ecotype, the steady-state folate levels are reduced in the pss1, atfolt1 and two folate biosynthesis mutants, suggesting that folate is required for non-host immunity. Overexpression of AtFOLT1 enhances immunity of transgenic soybean lines against two serious soybean pathogens, the fungal pathogen F. virguliforme and the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) Heterodera glycines. Transgenic lines showing enhanced SCN resistance also showed increased levels of folate accumulation. This study thus suggests that folate contributes to non-host plant immunity and that overexpression of a non-host resistance gene could be a suitable strategy for generating broad-spectrum disease resistance in crop plants.

RESUMO

Beauveria bassiana, a potential entomopathogenic biocontrol agent, has recently drawn attention worldwide for its other additional beneficial roles such as plant disease antagonist, beneficial rhizosphere colonizer, plant growth promoter and an endophyte. In the present study, endophytic colonizing behaviour of five (5) B. bassiana isolates viz., Bb4, Bb16, Bb25, Bb44 and Bb53 were studied in rice following three (3) artificial inoculation techniques viz., seed treatment, root inoculation and foliar spray and the endophytic colonizing ability were determined by culture-based assay. After B. bassiana inoculation, rice plants were challenged with Rhizoctonia solani and disease incidence and plant growth promotion were assessed. Per cent colonization of rice stems, leaves and roots were influenced by inoculation technique, post-inoculation time (7th, 14th, 21st and 28th dpi) and plant growth medium (sterile soil, non-sterile soil), recorded maximum on 14th-day post-inoculation (dpi) i.e., 96% in stems, 92% in leaves and 28% in roots, whereas, lower colonization was recorded on 7th, 21st and 28th dpi. Whereas, the foliar spray was found best as compared to seed and root inoculation techniques, and maximum fungal recovery was observed in stems and leaves and least in roots. Upon colonization, the physical presence of B. bassiana in rice was localized by light microscopy-based studies. Potential B. bassiana strains with endophytic ability were re-isolated and their identity was determined based on morphometric and PCR-based techniques. Further, the present study also identified several virulent genes viz., BbChit1, Cdep1, Bbhog1 and Bbjen1 and extracellular hydrolytic enzymes viz., α-amylase, cellulase, lipase, pectinase and xylanase secreted by endophytic B. bassiana strains as determinants responsible for establishing the endophytic association in rice. On the other hand, a significant reduction in disease incidence was observed in the endophytic B. bassiana Bb4-, Bb16- and Bb44-inoculated plants as compared to the non-endophytic B. bassiana Bb25- and Bb53-inoculated plants along with enhanced plant growth promotion. This is one of the few studies investigating the colonization of B. bassiana in rice and its promising role as a plant disease antagonist and plant growth promoter in rice.

RESUMO

Development of novel bionanomaterials for water and wastewater treatment has gained increased attraction and attention in recent times. The present study reports an effective biocomposite-based nano-photocatalyst comprised of nanochitosan (NCS), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) synthesized by sol-gel technique. The as-prepared NCS/CMC/TiO2 photocatalyst was systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy dispersive X-beam spectroscopy, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Photocatalytic degradation of the crystal violet (CV) dye using this nano photocatalyst was studied by varying the irradiation time, catalyst dosage, feed pH, and initial dye concentration. Further, the kinetic analysis of dye degradation was explored using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, and a plausible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The modification of TiO2 using NCS and CMC accelerated photocurrent transport by increasing the number of photogenerated electrons and holes. Overall, the study indicated the excellent photocatalytic performance of 95% CV dye degradation by NCS/CMC/TiO2 than the bare inorganic TiO2 photocatalyst under visible light irradiation.

RESUMO

Spontaneous pneumothorax leading to pneumomediastinum, pneumopericardium and surgical emphysema is a benign condition. Progression to the development of epidural pneumatosis is rare. We report a 19-year-old man who presented with dyspnoea and swelling of the chest wall following a bout of cough. Bilateral subcutaneous emphysema was palpated on the anterior chest wall from the sternum to the midaxillary regions. His chest X-ray revealed subcutaneous emphysema and pneumopericardium. His computed tomography of the thorax to rule out life-threatening conditions revealed bilateral subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum, pneumo-pericardium and pneumothorax. He was transferred to the intensive care unit. An intercostal drainage tube was inserted in the left pleural cavity. The patient was followed up with repeat chest X-rays. The patient's symptom got relieved and was discharged after day 9. Diagnosis of pneumomedia-stinum may not be as lamentable as it is seen. Close cardio-pulmonary monitoring is mandatory for complications and accompanying conditions. Most patients with uncomplicated spontaneous pneumomediastinum respond well to oxygen and conservative management. In this case, the patient's symptoms and severe tachypnoea prompted the insertion of an intercostal drainage tube.

RESUMO

The Gaussian 09 DFT tool is used to investigate the formational electronic behaviour, reactivity analysis and biological properties of fluphenazine dihydrochloride (FDD). The quantum computation is used to determine the spectroscopic and vibrational assignments of FDD. The NBO method explains charge transfer and molecular interactions. Energy gap values are determined using FMO analysis in different solvents and toluene is a better solvent due to higher value of solvation energy. The UV-visible spectra are investigated in various solvents using the TD-DFT method. Electrostatic potential, the wave function related properties such as LOL, NCI and RDG are determined in gaseous phase. Furthermore, the drug likeness is analyzed. At last, a docking study with MD simulation is used to investigate FDD's antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 main protease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontic procedures (REP) rely on the principles of tissue engineering and take advantage of the regenerative abilities of Stem Cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs). Since REPs advise the minimal instrumentation of root canals, they are more dependent on intracanal medicaments with antimicrobial activity to provide a sterile environment for pulpal regeneration. Hence present trial was conducted to examine the influence of different intracanal medicaments on SHEDs proliferation and survival. STUDY DESIGN: SHEDs were cultured by using the long-term explant culture method and characterized using flow cytometry and exposed to different concentrations of calcium hydroxide, doxycycline, potassium iodide, triamcinolone, and glutaraldehyde. SHEDs were subjected to the 3-(4,5- dimethylthiazol -2 -yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H- tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, apoptosis using the Annexin V-binding assay and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) activity. RESULTS: All medicaments significantly reduced cell viability at different concentrations over different exposure times. Highest number of live cells and ALP activity was observed in SHEDs cultured in calcium hydroxide. CONCLUSION: Potassium iodide and glutaraldehyde were the significantly less likely of all the medications examined to adversely affect the viability and survival of SHEDs.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has disrupted the antenatal care in low- and middle-income countries such as India. Telemedicine was introduced for the first time in India for continuing antenatal care. Hence, a questionnaire-based descriptive cross-sectional study is done to assess the outcomes of teleconsultation services, factors influencing it, and patient's perceived satisfaction. Three hundred and fifty-five women who delivered the following teleconsultation from July 2020 to October 2020 were included in the study. Thirty-two percent were high-risk pregnancies and 15% of the babies required neonatal intensive care unit admission. Ninety-eight percent could convey their health concerns, 18% had a referral to other departments, and 25% had visited casualty. Sixty-three percent procured medicine through e-prescription. Seventy-six percent were happy with teleconsultation overcrowded clinic, 82% were happy about saving travel expenditure, whereas overall satisfaction was 50%. Fourteen percent did not have access to smartphone and 9% did not receive the call at scheduled time. Telemedicine has a vital role in managing pregnancy concerns during this pandemic.

RESUMO

Soil yeasts exhibit an array of beneficial effects to plants viz., plant growth promotion, phosphate solubilization, nitrogen and sulphur oxidation, etc. Yeasts remain as poorly investigated group of microorganisms that represent an abundant and dependable source of bioactive/chemically novel compounds and potential bioinoculants. Hence this study holds the key concept of assessing the performance of soil yeasts with potential plant growth promoting ability in soil quality improvement. Sixteen soil yeast isolates with plant growth promoting traits were assessed for biofilm forming potential and five potential soil yeast isolates were selected and identified through molecular technique. Soil incubation study was performed with these isolates to assess their impact on soil physical, chemical and biological properties. Due to inoculation of soil yeasts, notable changes were observed in soil physical, chemical and biological properties. Among the soil yeast isolates, Pichia kudriavzevii gave better results in soil incubation study.

RESUMO

Ultra-small (size < 2 nm) gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are used as fluorescent probes which have excellent applications in bioimaging and sensing due to their emission in visible and NIR spectral region. Here, this property is exploited for understanding the quorum sensing phenomenon in bacteria which is regulated by signal molecules which are specific to various species. AuNCs are then functionalized with the signal molecules, Acyl Homoserine Lactones (AHL) of varying carbon chain length, C-6, C-8, and C-12 without 3rd C modification, to sense different strains of gram-negative bacteria i.e., Escherichia coli, Cronobacter sakazakii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In the concentration employed, selectivity to a limited extent is observed between the three Gram-negative bacteria tested. E. coli showed emission with all the AHL conjugates and P. aeruginosa did not interact with any of the three conjugates, whereas C. sakazakii showed specificity to C-8AHL. This is probably due to selectivity for cognate AHL molecules of appropriate concentrations.

RESUMO

Incinerated Bio-Medical Waste Ash (IBWA) is toxic waste material with broad potential (cancer, genetic risk, premature death, permanent disease) to inflict severe health damage for the atmosphere and humans. This waste is disposed of as landfill, which contaminates the underground water and environment. The effective way of disposal of IBWA is by utilizing it as a building material, which can reduce the hazardous toxic materials. The use of Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) combined with IBWA as a substitute for Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) has been researched for its ability to create a new type of Green Concrete. The physical and chemical properties were observed for the raw materials. IBWA was used at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50% replacement by weight for GGBS. Mixing proportions were 1:2.21:3.48 respectively for GGBS, Manufacturing Sand (M-sand), and coarse aggregate. Fresh properties and mechanical properties were examined for all specimens. The findings show an increase in the setting time and flow of concrete and a decrease in density with improved utilization of IBWA. On the other hand, IBWA replacement for GGBS enhanced the mechanical properties. These results revealed that IBWA could be partially replaced as source material for Geopolymer Concrete. This research may contribute to the reduction of dangerous IBWA as a building material.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the effect of medical nutritional therapy (MNT) provided by dieticians on medical and clinical outcomes for adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. OBJECTIVE: To compare effectiveness of MNT administered monthly to MNT administered once in 03 months. METHOD: The study was conducted at the Department of Endocrinology in a tertiary care hospital. 98 men and women of the age group above 18 years were recruited in the study. 49 consenting individuals were randomly assigned to each of the 02 groups namely Group A and Group B. Group A consisted of 02 visits with dietician (including the initial visit) in the first month and thereafter every monthly. Group B consisted of initial visit with the dietician and there after every 03 monthly. An additional 49 adults with type 2 Diabetes mellitus at one site who had no facility for a contact with dietician were included as a comparison group.Medical outcome measures including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum lipid levels were compared and analysed. Clinical outcomes included Body weight, Height and Body mass index (BMI).Data was collected at the entry to the study and at 03 and 06 months interval. RESULT: In our study, the baseline fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1C, total cholesterol and BMI was more or less similar in all 3 groups. There was a sustained decrease in all the four parameters in Group A which received the maximum nutritional therapy over a period of 06 months (A mean decrease of FPG 15.2 mg/dL, HbA1C 0.59%, total cholesterol 19.6 mg/dL, BMI 0.5 kg/m2 from baseline at 03 months and a mean decrease of FPG 33.4 mg/dL, HbA1C 1.24%, total cholesterol 40.8 mg/dL, BMI 1.1 kg/m2 from baseline at 06 months was seen). However, in Group B which received intermitted nutritional therapy, the decrease in these parameters were observed initially but over a period of 06 months, they increased to more or less near the baseline value months (A mean decrease of FPG 12.9 mg/dL, HbA1C 0.73%, total cholesterol 16.1 mg/dL, BMI 0.5 kg/m2 from baseline at 03 months but a mean increase of FPG 3.2 mg/dL and a mean decrease of HbA1C 0.24%, total cholesterol of 4.3 mg/dL and BMI 0.15 kg/m2 from baseline at 06 months was seen). In Group C which had no means of access to nutritional therapy, there was a subtle decrease in FPG and gradual increase in HbA1C, total cholesterol and BMI at 03 months but all four parameters increased significantly higher than the baseline value at the end of 06 months months (A mean decrease of FPG 6.2 mg/dL and mean increase of HbA1C 0.31%, total cholesterol 16.0 mg/dL, BMI 0.3 kg/m2 from baseline at 03 months and a mean increase of FPG 5.9 mg/dL, HbA1C 0.73%, total cholesterol 31.1 mg/dL, BMI 0.81 kg/m2 from baseline at 06 months was seen). CONCLUSION: Our study has clearly indicated that medical nutritional therapy is of great importance in the holistic management of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus in adults. MNT has got the advantage of not only maintaining a strict glycemic control (in terms of FPG and HbA1C reduction) but also in the lowering of cholesterol and BMI which are the main contributors to cardiovascular (CVD) events among people with type 2 Diabetes mellitus. Also, people who were given frequent MNT had a clear advantage over those who received intermittent MNT in terms of all the measured parameters.

RESUMO

Hydrogen production is vital for meeting future energy demands and managing environmental sustainability. Electrolysis of water is considered as the suitable method for H2 generation in a carbon-free pathway. Herein, the synthesis of highly efficient Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 based hierarchical nanoflower arrays on nickel foam (NF) is explored through the one-pot hydrothermal method (Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 /NF) for overall water splitting applications. The nanoflower arrays are self-supported on the NF without any binder, possessing the required porosity and structural characteristics. The obtained Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 /NF displays high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as well as oxygen evolution reaction (OER), activities in 1 m KOH solution. The overpotentials exhibited by this system at 25 mA cm-2 are nearly 277 and 102 mV for HER and OER, respectively, in 1 m KOH solution. Subsequently, the overall water splitting was performed in 1 m KOH solution by employing Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 /NF as both the anode and cathode, where the system required only 1.49, 1.60, and 1.69 V to deliver the current densities of 10, 25, and 50 mA cm-2 , respectively. Comparison of the activity of Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 /NF with the state-of-the-art Pt/C and RuO2 coated on NF displays an enhanced performance for Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 /NF both in the half-cell as well as in the full cell, emphasizing the significance of the present work. The post analysis of the material after water electrolysis confirms that the surface Co(OH)2 formed during the course of the reaction serves as the favorable active sites. Overall, the activity modulation achieved in the present case is attributed to the presence of the open-pore morphology of the as formed nanoflowers of Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 on NF and the simultaneous presence of the surface Co(OH)2 along with the highly conducting Co9 S8 -Ni3 S2 core, which facilitates the adsorption of the reactants and subsequently its conversion into the gaseous products during water electrolysis.

RESUMO

The role of B site doping with transition metals in brownmillerites, a perovskite related family of compounds, in bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis, viz., simultaneous reduction and evolution reactions, is analysed. Ca2Fe1.9M0.1O5 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) is synthesised and structurally characterised by powder XRD and Rietveld refinement. Valence states of the surface B site ions are identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Bifunctional oxygen electrochemistry is studied with the RDE and RRDE techniques and correlated with the structural and electronic parameters like oxygen non-stoichiometry and B site catalytic activity. Since the widely accepted electronic descriptors like eg filling may not be sufficient for explaining the bifunctional activity, B site electron donating capability as well as the extent of oxygen vacancies enhancing O2 adsorption is also considered. Such structural parameters are also found to influence both the ORR and OER and based on this, Ni doping is proposed as advantageous for the bifunctional activity.

RESUMO

The objective of this research is to propose a methodology to analyse breast thermograms in order to detect breast abnormalities, including cancer. This research work mainly target to segmented ROI that show significant increase in temperature as compared to the neighbouring areas and contralateral sides in breast thermograms. The captured frontal thermograms from each patient is initially smoothed using a Gaussian filter with a standard deviation σ = 1.4 to reduce noise. Region of interest is segmented using bifurcation points obtained by identifying curve that passes through infra-mammary fold. Infra-mammary curve is detected using Horizontal projection profile. Once the segmentation for analysis is determined, exact location of an abnormality or a lesion is determined. Heat patterns are analysed for symmetry. Asymmetry analysis usually helps to detect abnormalities. Significance and challenges of thermal images are discussed. Once the segmentation for analysis is determined, exact location of an abnormality or a lesion is determined. Heat patterns are analysed for symmetry. Asymmetry analysis usually helps to detect abnormalities. Further, classifiers based on support vector machine and principal component analysis were tested on the dataset used for evaluation. Experimental results and statistical analysis support the proposed methodology is able to detect breast anomalies with higher accuracy. An average accuracy of 95%, sensitivity of 97.05% and specificity of 92.3% was obtained for a set of sixty images with 35 normal and 25 abnormal thermograms using SVM-RBF classifier.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence of thrombocytopenia in adults with Plasmodium vivax infection. METHOD: An observational study comprising 84 consenting individuals with Plasmodium vivax infection was undertaken. All the individuals belong to armed forces who are from different parts of the country. Everyone had normal platelet count prior to admission to the hospital. After admission, they were subjected to routine hematological and biochemical investigations comprising complete blood count including platelet counts, urine routine, liver function test, renal function test, serum electrolytes and Chest X-ray after ruling out Dengue, concomitant sepsis and possibility of recent viral infection. Grading of thrombocytopenia was done according to NCI common terminology criteria for adverse events Version 3.0. Results were analysed and tabulated. RESULT: A total of 84 patients were studied. 82 (97.6%) patients had thrombocytopenia. Majority (68.3%) of the patients had their lowest platelet count on the 5th and 6th day of fever. There was no associated increase in risk of complication with the increase in grade of thrombocytopenia. But with increase in severity of thrombocytopenia, it took more time for the platelets to recover to normal level. CONCLUSION: Thrombocytopenia is widely present in P. vivax malaria of adults. However, the severity of thrombocytopenia does not correlate with the likely progression to complication. The chance of progressing to complicated malaria is equal among all adults of P.vivax malaria irrespective of the platelet levels. Hence, in a resource limited rural Indian set-up where the expertise to diagnose and detect malaria microscopically or reliable antigen detection method is not available, thrombocytopenia in an acute febrile illness especially on Day 5 to Day 6 of fever onset could be considered as P. vivax malarial infection with good amount of diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity of 97.6%) and empirical anti-malarial therapy could be started as per the existing treatment guidelines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: India is a signatory to the 1997 World Health Assembly resolutions on lymphatic fila- riasis, and other neglected tropical diseases, and supports global elimination of lymphatic filariasis by 2020. The global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (GPELF) has two main components, viz. interrupting transmission of LF through mass drug administration; and managing morbidity and preventing disability. Consorted efforts by the Public Health Department in Tamil Nadu state (India) for elimination of LF was launched in the year 1997 concentrating on both the components of the programme. The data on the prevalence of filarial morbidity and its entire management at present is based on manual reports and registers maintained by the field functionaries. To overcome the constraints in the manual reporting, an attempt was made to develop a web-based reporting system with different modules and user-friendly interface. METHODS: The Vellore and Thiruvannamalai districts were selected as a study area. The study was conducted between 2011 and 2014, which revealed that the entire morbidity management was based on the manual formats. Constraints in the present manual reporting were analysed. PHP and MySQL tools were used to generate user friendly modules. Feedback was collected from field functionaries at different health centre levels, on the adequacy in the modules and effectiveness of the web-based reporting system. RESULTS: The online reporting modules facilitated data entry at the health subcentre level itself. Analysis and retrieval of data was facilitated at all other levels in the public health system. The modules also covered details of surgical interventions, ex-gratia payments and other benefits extended to the lymphoedema patients by the Government. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The usage and feedback of the web-based reporting system appeared very encouraging and reliable, indicating that it can be implemented in health programmes for disease management. This web-based user-friendly online reporting system can contribute largely to achieve the goals of the GPELF; specially after MDA is withdrawn.

RESUMO

A study to evaluate the relationship between the spiritual intelligence and adjustment among the college students was conducted on a sample of 250 students in six various colleges of Tuticorin district, Tamil Nadu, India. Gender, religion, community, major subject, educational qualification of father and mother, student locality, college type, father and mother's occupation and monthly family income (n = 11 variables) were chosen for the study. Test of significance for spiritual intelligence and adjustment was studied and found them nonsignificant except student locality, found to be significant. Two valid and reliable instruments were used to assess student's spiritual intelligence and adjustment. Correlation and Chi-square analysis using structural equation model were used to analyze these data. Correlation analysis showed significant relationship between the variables among the college students (n = 250). Chi-square analysis of association between adjustments of college students showed that most variables are nonsignificant unlike father's educational qualification and mother's occupation. The results disclosed the significant positive relationship with spiritual intelligence and adjustment among adolescents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms driving osteoarthritic pain remain poorly understood, but there is increasing evidence for a role of the central nervous system in the chronification of pain. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the influence of a model of unilateral knee osteoarthritis on nociceptive processing. RESULTS: Four to five weeks post intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA, 1 mg) into the left knee, Sprague Dawley rats were anesthetized for functional magnetic resonance imaging studies to characterize the neural response to a noxious stimulus (intra-articular capsaicin injection). In a two-arm cross-over design, 5 µM/50 µl capsaicin was injected into either the left knee (n = 8, CAPS-MIA) or right control knee (n = 8, CAPS-CON), preceded by contralateral vehicle (SAL) injection. To assess neural correlates of mechanical hyperalgesia, hindpaws were stimulated with von Frey hairs (8 g: MIA; 15 g: control knee, based on behavioral withdrawal responses). The CAPS-MIA group exhibited significant activation of the periaqueductal gray, unilateral thalamus and bilateral mensencephalon, superior-colliculus, and hippocampus, with no significant activation in the other groups/conditions. Capsaicin injection increased functional connectivity in the mid-brain network and mediodorsal thalamic nucleus, hippocampus, and globus pallidus, which was significantly stronger in CAPS-MIA compared to CAPS-CON groups. Mechanical stimulation of the hyperalgesic (ipsilateral to MIA knee) and normalgesic (contralateral) hindpaws evoked qualitatively different brain activation with more widespread brainstem and anterior cingulate (ACC) activation when stimulating the hyperalgesic paw, and clearer frontal sensory activation from the normalgesic paw. CONCLUSIONS: We provide evidence for modulation of nociceptive processing in a chronic knee osteoarthritis pain model with stronger brain activation and alteration of brain networks induced by the pro-nociceptive stimulus. We also report a shift to a medial pain activation pattern following stimulation of the hyperalgesic hindpaw. Taken together, our data support altered neural pain processing as a result of peripheral and central pain sensitization in this model.
