Cucullanus carettae Baylis, 1923 (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) is found worldwide in loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). Regarding the Mediterranean, C. carettae has been identified in the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Sea and a unique description of a Cucullanus sp. specimen in loggerheads from the Adriatic Sea has been reported in the literature so far. In the framework of a bio-monitoring project of the Abruzzo and Molise coasts, a parasitological survey was performed on stranded and by-caught sea turtles, at the Istituto Zooprofilattico of Abruzzo and Molise "G. Caporale." During necropsy, the gastrointestinal system of 72 stranded loggerhead turtles was analyzed for the presence of endoparasites and fecal samples were collected for coprological examination. Adult C. carettae (n = 123) was found in the upper intestine of one loggerhead turtle, associated with chronic lymphoplasmocytic enteritis. Additionally, five stool samples (6.9%) were positive for Cucullanus sp. eggs. Molecular characterization of adult nematodes was carried out to study phylogenetic relationships among the Cucullanus species. To our knowledge, this is the first morphological and molecular identification of C. carettae in loggerhead turtles from the Adriatic Sea. Additional studies on the distribution of this parasite in the Mediterranean are encouraged.

BACKGROUND: Probiotic oral intake, via modulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis, can impact brain activity, mood, and behavior; therefore, it may be beneficial against psychological distress and anxiety disorders. Inflammatory cytokines can influence the onset and progression of several neurodegenerative mood disorders, and the IL-1ß rs16944 SNP is related to high cytokine levels and potentially affects mood disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the combined effect of IL-1ß polymorphism and probiotic administration in mood disorder phenotypes in the Italian population. METHODS: 150 subjects were randomized into two different groups, probiotic oral suspension group (POSG) and placebo control group (PCG), and received the relative treatment for 12 weeks. Psychological profile assessment by Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Body Uneasiness Test (BUT), and Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL90R) was administered to all volunteers. Genotyping was performed on DNA extracted from salivary samples. RESULTS: After 12 weeks of intervention, a significant reduction of HAM-A total score was detected in the POSG (p < 0.01), compared to the PCG. Furthermore, IL-1ß carriers have moderate risk to develop anxiety (OR = 5.90), and in POSG IL-1ß carriers, we observed a reduction of HAM-A score (p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of probiotics mitigates anxiety symptoms, especially in healthy adults with the minor A allele of rs16944 as a risk factor. Our results encourage the use of probiotics in anxiety disorders and suggest genetic association studies for psychobiotic-personalized therapy.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae can utilize a wide range of carbon sources; however, in the presence of glucose the use of alternate carbon sources would be repressed. Several genes involved in the metabolic pathways exert these effects. Among them, the zinc finger protein, Mig1 (multicopy inhibitor of GAL gene expression) plays important roles in glucose repression of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To investigate whether the alleviation of glucose effect would result in a switch to oxidative production pathway, MIG1 were disrupted in a haploid laboratory strain (2805) of S. cerevisiae. The impact of this disruption was studied under fully aerobic conditions when glucose was the sole carbon source. Our results showed that glucose repression was partly alleviated; i.e., ethanol, as a significant fermentation marker, and acetate productions were respectively decreased by 14.13% and 43.71% compared to the wild type. In ΔMIG1 strain, the metabolic shifting on the aerobic pathway and a significant increase in pyruvate and glycerol production suggested it as an optimally productive industrial yeast strain. However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUND: Myotonic dystrophy type I (DM1) is a genetic autosomal dominant disorder; malignant hyperthermia is a possible complication. It may occur following administration of some halogenated general anesthetics, muscle relaxants, or surgical stress. AIM: The purpose of this case report is to evaluate the dental management of patients with Steinert's disease. CASE REPORT: The patient needed dental extraction. A locore-gional paraperiosteal anesthesia was performed using bupiva-caine without vasoconstrictor and sedation with nitrous oxide. The syndesmotomy of the elements 3.1, 4.1, and 4.2 was executed. The elements were dislocated through a straight lever and avulsed with an appropriate clamp. The socket was courted, washing with saline solution, inserting a fibrin sponge, and applying sutures (silk 3-0). CONCLUSION: Dental treatment of the patient with Steinert's dystrophy must be carried out under a hospital environment and the use of local anesthetic without vasoconstrictor and with use of nitrous oxide; anxiolysis is recommended. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This case report describes the precautions to perform oral surgery in patients with Steinert's disease and emphasizes the role of anxiolysis to avoid episodes of malignant hyperthermia.

BACKGROUND: Obesity represents a global public health problem due to its association with cardiovascular diseases and reduced lifespan. The most widely used classification of obesity is expressed as Body Mass Index (BMI); however, this formula is an imprecise adiposity measurement that ignores several important factors involved. Body Adiposity Index (BAI) was more recently proposed as an indirect evaluation of percentage body fat (PBF). PBF is a direct measure of person's relative body fat and a better predictor of obesity-related risk diseases than BMI and BAI. Since obesity and consequent diseases are considered epidemic, new accurate formulas for epidemiological studies are of interest to the scientific community. Because direct measurement of body composition could be quite expensive, the aims of our work were to analyse the distributions of PBF by Dual X-ray absorptiometry, and the creation of new predictive equation using only anthropometric measures that could be helpful to clinicians to assess easily body fat of female patients. METHODS/RESULTS: A sample of 1,031 Caucasian Italian women was recruited and BMI, BAI and PBF were evaluated. With the aim of developing a predictive model of PBF a multivariate regression model was fitted to observed data. CONCLUSIONS: The definition of universally recognized PBF by gender and age could have public health implications. In this study, we developed a new predictive PBF equation that does not require the use of medical instruments or skilled measurement techniques and that may be easily applicable to Italian women.

Heart failure (HF) is a condition with growing morbidity and mortality. Dyslipidemia in HF is not concentrated around hypercholesterolemia as in coronary artery disease. As a corollary, the robust benefits seen with statins across the spectrum of CAD have not been replicated in HF. Multiple potential pleiotropic effects of statins include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, endothelial stabilization, antiapoptotic, anti-thrombotic, and modulation of the autonomic system apart from lipid lowering. These benevolent actions need to be counterbalanced with the potential derangement of ubiquinone, selenoprotein and endotoxin pathways. While small randomized and non-randomized studies demonstrated a multitude of benefits in clinical and surrogate endpoints, two large RCTs failed to demonstrate unequivocal benefits. However, multiple large meta-analyses do demonstrate definite improvement in clinical endpoints including death and heart failure hospitalization. The clinical likelihood of benefit was higher in younger patients with less advanced HF and use of lipophilic statins.

AIMS: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is frequently observed in women of reproductive age, and is associated with disturbances in both reproductive and metabolic function. Insulin resistance (IR) is key to the pathophysiology of PCOS, and early detection may improve outcomes in this patient group. Rapid and straightforward laboratory tests may contribute towards early detection. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 185 women presenting for the first time to a gynecology clinic was carried out. Of this group, 77 met the inclusion criteria. The sample was divided according to insulin sensitivity (IS) given by the Matsuda Index, and the two groups were compared using correlation analysis. Furthermore, the sensitivity and specificity of the Matsuda, homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) indexes were compared. RESULTS: Although bodu mass index (BMI) was higher in the insulin resistant group than the insulin sensitive group, the mean age of the IR group was actually lower. HOMA-IR and QUICKI correlated well with the Matsuda index in both groups. The HOMA-IR test showed the highest sensitivity and specificity in the detection of IR when compared to the Matsuda Index, and no added benefit was derived from using a combination of both QUICKI and HOMA- 1R. CONCLUSIONS: In a group of 77 women diagnosed with PCOS, 49 (63.6%) had IR according to the Matsuda index. The HOMA-IR index, which is based on fasting serum insulin and glucose, correlated closely with the Matsuda index, indicating it may be a reliable substitute in the detection and subsequent early intervention required to improve outcomes in PCOS.

OBJECTIVES: Strategies to improve weight maintenance are focused on considering the genetic makeup and its interaction with dietary intake, with the aim to identify vulnerable individuals that will benefit from a variety of more personalized dietary recommendations. The aim of the study was to examine the impact of the C677T MTHFR gene Polymorphism on body composition changes induced by a balanced hypocaloric Italian Mediterannean diet (IMD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Participation in the study included a complete screening of anthropometry and body composition by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and a genotyping for the C677T MTHFR polymorphism. 70 Italian Caucasian obese were enrolled and 56 of them completed the screening at baseline and 12 weeks after the nutritional intervention. RESULTS: T(+) carriers had a higher content of Total Body Fat (TBFat), and Lean (TBLean), reflecting on higher weight and BMI, than T(-) carriers. After IMD, the 28.6% and 71.4% of total subjects decreased weight and TBFat (Kg), respectively. The relative changes were: delta % = -9.09±3.85 for weight; delta % = -15.79±8.51 for TBFat; delta % = -3.80±5.60 for TBLean. The 5.3% of subjects who reached the end point of intervention, and the 8.9% who reduced TBFat (%) below the cut-off of preobesity, were T(-) carriers. A loss of TBLean (Kg) was observed in the 5.1% and 23.5% of T(-) and T(+) carriers. CONCLUSIONS: MTHFR genetic variations analysis would be an innovative tool for the nutritional assessment, in order to predict the therapeutic response of obese subjects, in terms of fat and lean mass loss.

BACKGROUND: Normal weight obese (NWO) syndrome is defined as an excessive body fat associated with a normal body mass index and characterized by a higher risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have demonstrated that dark chocolate (DC) has beneficial effects in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. AIM: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of DC consumption on lipid profile, inflammatory markers, biochemical parameters, and blood pressure, in NWO women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 15 women affected by NWO syndrome, aged 20-40 years, were included in the study. After a DC-free washout period, subjects received DC (100 g/die) containing 70% cocoa for 7-days. Body composition by Dual energy-X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was performed at baseline. Blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters and plasma levels of some cytokines were measured before and after DC consumption. RESULTS: After DC consumption, we observed a significant increase in the HDL cholesterol level (Delta% = +10.41±13,53; p ≤ 0.05), a significant decrease of total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio (Delta %= -11.45±7.03; p ≤ 0.05), LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio (Delta % = -11.70±8.91; p ≤ 0.05), and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) (Delta % = -32.99±3.84; p ≤ 0.05). In addition, a reduction in abdomen circumference was observed. We also found a positive correlation between changes in atherogenic indices, and IL-1Ra, abdomen reduction. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that regular consumption of DC could be useful in maintaining a good atherogenic profile, due to the favourable effects on HDL cholesterol, lipoprotein ratios and inflammation markers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the role of MTHFR gene polymorphism (rs1801133) in women with lipedema (LIPPY) body composition parameters compared to a control group (CTRL). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We carried out a study on a sample of 45 LIPPY and 50 women as a CTRL. Body composition parameters were examined by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). A genetic test was performed for the MTHFR polymorphism (rs1801133, 677C>T) using a saliva sample for LIPPY and CTRL groups. Mann-Whitney tests evaluated statistically significant differences between four groups (carriers and non-carriers of the MTHFR polymorphism for LIPPY and CTRL groups) on anthropometric/body composition parameters to identify patterns. RESULTS: LIPPY showed significantly higher (p<0.05) anthropometric parameters (weight, BMI, waist, abdominal, hip circumferences) and lower waist/hip ratio (p<0.05) compared to the CTRL group. The association between the polymorphism alleles related to the rs1801133 MTHFR gene and the body composition values LIPPY carriers (+) showed an increase in fat tissue of legs and fat region of legs percentage, arm's fat mass (g), leg's fat mass (g), and leg's lean mass (g) (p<0.05) compared to CTRL (+). Lean/fat arms and lean/fat legs were lower (p<0.05) in LIPPY (+) than in CTRL (+). In the LIPPY (+), the risk of developing the lipedema disease was 2.85 times higher (OR=2.85; p<0.05; 95% confidence interval = 0.842-8.625) with respect to LIPPY (-) and CTRL. CONCLUSIONS: The presence or absence of MTHFR polymorphism offers predictive parameters that could better characterize women with lipedema based on the association between body composition and MTHFR presence.

RESUMO

COVID-19 is a novel disease with a broad range of clinical patterns. Several patients show dysbiosis in the intestinal tract, with evidence of reduced beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. It is well established that human gut microbiota dysbiosis is associated with several clinical conditions, including respiratory tract diseases due to the gut-lung axis. This narrative review discusses the role of nutrients in the relationship between the gut microbiota and the immune response in SARS-CoV-2 infection. In particular, we will focus on the benefits offered by vitamins and micronutrients on different aspects of COVID-19 disease while also discussing which diets seem to provide the most advantages.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that interleukin-6 (IL-6) is linked to the regulation of fat mass (FM). Our previous data define the common -174G>C IL-6 polymorphism as a marker for 'vulnerable' individuals at risk of age- and obesity-related diseases. An association between -174G>C IL-6 polymorphism and weight loss after bariatric surgery has been demonstrated. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the impact of -174G>C IL-6 polymorphism on weight loss, body composition, fluid distribution and cardiometabolic changes in obese subjects, after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) surgery. DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES: A total of 40 obese subjects were studied at baseline and at 6 months follow-up after LAGB surgery. Cardiometabolic and genetic assessment of -174G>C IL-6 polymorphism, anthropometric, body composition and fluid distribution analysis were performed. RESULTS: After LAGB surgery, significant reductions in weight (Δ%=-11.66 ± 7.78, P<0.001), body mass index (P<0.001), total and trunk FM (kg, %) (Δ% of total FM=-22.22 ± 12.15, P<0.01), bone mineral density (T-score) (P<0.001), resting metabolic rate (RMR) (P<0.01), and total body water and intracellular water (TBW, ICW) (P<0.05) were observed. At baseline, C(-) carriers of IL-6 polymorphism had a significantly higher RMR (P<0.05), free FM (kg), but less total and trunk FM (%), higher body cell mass (BCM), content of TBW (L) and ECW (extracellular water)/ICW ratio compared with C(+) carriers (P<0.001). After LAGB, C(+) carriers had a significantly stronger reduction of total FM (kg), but lower bone density, compared with C(-) carriers (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Beyond the relationship between -174G>C IL-6 polymorphism and body composition, this study provides first evidence about the association of IL-6 variant with fluid distribution, at baseline, and FM and bone density loss in obese subjects at 6 months follow-up after LAGB surgery. LAGB was less effective if the subjects were carrying risk genotypes, C(-) carriers, for obesity, suggesting a role of genetic variations on bariatric surgery outcomes.

AIM: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the skeletal maturation assessed through cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) and dental age, in normal weight, pre-obese and obese patients, using the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the Dual energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 107 healthy patients, aged between 6 and 12 years (mean age 8.77∓1.79), underwent anthropometric measurements, BMI calculation, and DXA exam at the Department of Neuroscience, Human Nutrition Unit, University of Rome "Tor Vergata" and the assessment of skeletal and dental age at the Paediatric Dentistry Unit of PTV Hospital, University of Rome "Tor Vergata". The subjects were classified as underweight, normal weight, pre-obese and obese according to FM% McCarthy cut-offs classification and BMI classification. STATISTICS: The analyses were performed using the SPSS software (version 16; SPSS Inc., Chicago IL, USA). The assessment of differences through the means of continuous variables among the different groups were analysed using the One-Way-Anova test. The Student's t test was also applied for each group of children (using McCarthy and BMI classifications) between chronological and skeletal-dental age; the Fisher's exact test was performed between the gender categorical variable and McCarthy cut-offs classification, and between McCarthy and BMI classifications. Besides, to evaluate the association between skeletal and dental age, a Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated. In all the assessments a significant level of alpha = 0.05 was considered. RESULTS: The comparison between BMI and DXA data shows statistically significant differences between BMI- FM% (McCarthy cut-offs) classifications (p≤0.001). According to FM% (McCarthy cut-offs) classification, from the Anova analysis among the groups a statistically significant difference between skeletal age (p=0.03) and dental age (p=0.02) was observed, while the difference related to the chronological age (p=0.22) among the groups, was not significant. The correlation between dental and skeletal age is almost the highest (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.994) and statistically significant (p=0.01). According to FM% McCarthy classification, it is observed that with an increase in the FM% , that is passing from normal weight to obese children, the skeletal-dental age always increases with respect to the chronological age. The difference between chronological and skeletal-dental age is statistically significant for pre-obese (p=0.01) and obese (p<0.001) children, while it is not significant for underweight (p=0.46) and normal weight (p=0.33) children. According to the BMI classification, from the Anova analysis no statistically significant differences were observed among the groups as for chronological, dental and skeletal age. Applying the same inferential analyses and taking into account the BMI classification, in the obese subjects were observed not statistically significant differences as for chronological and skeletal-dental age (p=0.09). CONCLUSION: The results highlighted a relation between skeletal-dental age acceleration and body fat percentage measured by DXA.

During chronic kidney disease (CKD), typical alterations in the gut microbiota are observed. The kidney no longer plays the role of the main excretory organ as this function is performed by the intestine. In CKD patients, an alteration of intestinal permeability and a degradation of the protective mucous layer are observed. These changes in the intestinal barrier allow the passage of bacterial material from the intestine to the bloodstream through the intestinal wall. This phenomenon contributes to the induction of the chronic inflammatory state, typical of CKD. In nephropathic patients, there is an increase in circulation of p-cresyl sulfate (p-CS), indoxyl sulphate (IS), indole-3 acetic acid (IAA) and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), all gut-derived uremic toxins. The changes in gut microbiota composition are related to CKD stage and this phenomenon is exacerbated in hemodialysis (HD) adult and pediatric patients. Interestingly, it is observed a positive shift in gut microbiota composition after renal transplantation and at the same time a reduction of circulating gut-derived uremic toxins. Either gut dysbiosis or uremic toxins accumulation contribute to the CKD onset and progression.

OBJECTIVE: Cohort studies, clinical audits of patients with COVID-19 in hospital and routine primary care records provided evidence-based insights on the relationship between excess weigh, obesity and COVID-19. The purpose of this umbrella review is to highlight the relationship between nutritional quality and social inequalities related to CDNCD, obesity and SARS-CoV-2 infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Only articles published from 2008 to the present were included in the search to show an updated picture of the topic. The search for published studies was conducted in February 2021 in the scientific databases PubMed (MEDLINE). The terms used for the search were "COVID-19", "Obesity", "Disparities", "Nutritional inequalities", "Chronic degenerative non-communicable diseases" and "review" OR "systematic review" OR "meta-analysis" separated by the Boolean operator AND. RESULTS: 1874 reviews were found, but only 99 met the objective. Obese or dysmetabolic patients are those who had a worse course of disease following COVID-19. This data was observed not only for Chinese and Caucasians, but also and above all among Africans, African Americans, Latinos and indigenous people. Plausible mechanisms to explain the association between obesity and COVID-19 outcomes, included the role of excess adipose tissue on respiratory function, metabolic dysfunction, the cardiovascular system, enhanced inflammatory response and impaired response to infection. CONCLUSIONS: Today, chronic non-communicable degenerative diseases (CDNCDs) are responsible for 70% of public health expenditure, affecting 30% of the population (one or more chronic diseases). Unfortunately, given the health emergency due to SARS-CoV-2, infectious diseases are currently more at the center of attention. However, the spread of infectious communicable diseases and CDNCDs is facilitated in situations of social disparity. In fact, in the poorest countries there are the highest rates of malnutrition and there is a greater risk of contracting viral infections, as well as, paradoxically, a risk of comorbidity, due to access to cheaper food and qualitatively poor, with high caloric density.

AIM: The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to evaluate the relationship between childhood obesity and dental caries, in paediatric subjects, through the use of two methods of diagnosis of overweight-obesity: Body Mass Index (BMI), and Dual energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). METHODS: A total of 107 healthy patients, aged between 6 and 12 years (53.3% females, 46.7% males) were included in the study. Each patient underwent a nutritional examination and dental check-up. The nutritional examination was performed at the Department of Neuroscience, Human Nutrition Unit, University of Rome Tor Vergata and consisted of anthropometric measurements, BMI calculation, DXA exam, body fat mass (FM) assessment. Dental examinations were performed by a trained dentist of the Paediatric Dentistry Unit of PTV Hospital, University of Rome Tor Vergata. Dental caries was assessed using visual-tactile method and X-rays (bite-wing and panoramic radiography); the dmft/DMFT index was calculated. The subjects were classified as underweight, normal weight, pre-obese, obese, according to different criteria: a) age- and sex-specific BMI according to the Cacciari growth charts and cut-offs, b) body fat mass percentage (FM%) according to the WHO cut-offs, c) body fat mass percentage (FM%) according to the McCarthy growth charts and cut-offs. STATISTICS: The statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS software (version 11.01; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The dmft/DMFT index was checked for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Independence of the dmft/DMFT distribution from sex and age was checked by using the Mann Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests. Differences in the dmft/DMFT values between groups, according to BMI and FM% classifications, were tested using the Mann Whitney test. The minimal level of significance of the differences was fixed at p- value ≤ 0.05 for all procedures. RESULTS: The comparison between BMI and DXA data shows statistically significant differences between BMI-%FM (WHO cut-offs) classifications (p ≤ 0.001) and BMI-%FM (McCarthy cut-offs) classifications (p ≤ 0.001). According to the BMI classification, there was no significant association between increase of dmft-DMFT and pre-obesity/obesity, but according to the FM% (WHO cut-offs) classification, the pre-obese/obese children had higher caries indexes than normal weight subjects, both in deciduous teeth (p=0.003) and permanent teeth (p=0.000). Furthermore, according to the FM% (McCarthy cut-offs) classification, obese children had higher caries indexes than normal weight and pre-obese subjects, both in deciduous teeth (p=0.030, p=0.02) and permanent teeth (p=0.019, p=0.011), respectively, but they had a dmft-DMFT value comparable with underweight children. CONCLUSION: The BMI misclassified adiposity status of the paediatric population compared to DXA, which provides a reliable screening and a more specific assessment of body composition. The misclassification of childhood obesity, determined by the BMI, could be used to explain the conflicting data in the literature on the association between obesity and dental caries. Our results highlighted for the first time the relationship between dental caries prevalence and body fat percentage measured by DXA.

To better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the dendritic cell (DC) defects in cancer, we analyzed which signaling pathway is implicated in the abnormal monocyte differentiation into DC determined by the presence of Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) released factors. Our results indicate that the DC, obtained in this condition, together with phenotypic abnormalities and reduced allostimulatory function, showed hyperphosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) molecules, in comparison to the DC differentiated in the absence of PEL-released factors. The inhibition of p38 MAPK but not of STAT3 phosphorylation, with specific inhibitors, was able to revert the effect of the PEL-released factors on the DC phenotype. This study suggests that p38 MAPK signaling pathway is an important contributor to the abnormal differentiation of DC in PEL.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anthropometric parameters and the body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis on paediatric subjects with dental agenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 144 subjects (58.3% females and 41.7% males), aged 7-14 years (average age 10.22±2.53 years). Each patient underwent a dental check-up at the Paediatric Dentistry Unit, University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy) and a nutritional evaluation, aimed at analysing the anthropometric characteristics and evaluating the indices of body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) at the Human Nutrition Unit, University of Rome Tor Vergata. The sample was divided into three groups: a group with single agenesis (Group 1), a group with multiple agenesis (Group 2) and a control group (Group A). Using the predictive equations, the following values were evaluated: resistance (R), reactance (Xc), phase angle (PHA), body cell mass index (BCMI), body cell mass (BCM), total body water (TBW), intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), fat mass (FM), fat free mass (FFM). STATISTICS: The Excel environment and the SAS System, version 9.3, were used for statistical analysis, providing a descriptive and parametric analysis of the sample. The values of the anthropometric parameters were expressed as mean ± standard deviation. For the statistical analysis of anthropometric parameters and body composition, analysis of variance (1-way ANOVA) was used, which allowed us to find differences and the Student's t-test to compare Groups 1, 2, and A. RESULTS: There is a significant difference in the resistance R value between the case group with single agenesis (Group 1) and the control group (Group A) (R, 710.28±72.46 vs 667.4±104.16, p=0.028), and the phase angle PHA between the case group with multiple agenesis (Group 2) and the control group (Group A) (PHA, 5.18±0.48 vs 5.85±1.05, p=0.028). The BCM% value shows a significant difference between both Group 1 and Group A (BCM%, 50.53 ± 3.29 vs 52.68 ± 4.74, p=0.016) and between Group 2 and Group A (BCM%, 49.25± 2.86 vs 52.68 ± 4.74, p=0.035). The TBW, ICW, ECW, FM, FFM values showed no significant differences between the various groups analysed. CONCLUSION: Body composition in subjects with dental agenesis presents a higher R, a consequently lower PHA and a lower BCM% compared to the control group. For the first time, the results highlighted the possible relationship between dental agenesis and body composition, measured through BIA.

OBJECTIVE: Among the genes involved in obesity, the Fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) is certainly one of the most known and the relation between FTO rs9939609 and BMI is highly discussed; nevertheless, data about its influence on body composition are limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a study on a sample of 1066 Italian subjects, whose body composition and FTO rs9939609 were analyzed. RESULTS: We found significant relations between FTO with arm (p=0.01), abdomen (p=0.00), and trunk circumferences (p=0.00), BMI (p=0.01), FM% (p=0.00), and android FM% (p=0.01), whereas no relations were found between FTO and both gynoid fat and lean mass. CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, the relation between FTO and BMI is confirmed and is related specifically with android FM%. These results indicated that FTO rs9939609 may be a genetic etiological factor for obesity. Indeed, the specificity for the android FM% would indicate FTO as an etiological factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases.
