RESUMO

Stress granules (SGs) are cytoplasmic foci lacking membranes, comprising non-translating messenger ribonucleoproteins, translational initiation factors, and additional proteins. Their formation is crucial for rapidly modulating gene expression in response to adverse environmental conditions, such as pollution and infections. Limited research has focused on investigating the molecular components of SGs in fish, with minimal exploration in Antarctic fish. This study characterises for the first time the transcript sequences of one key protein component of SGs, TIA-1 (T-cell intracellular antigen 1), in two Antarctic endemic fish species, i.e. Trematomus bernacchii and Chionodraco hamatus. The mRNA-binding protein TIA-1 acts as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression and its aggregation leads to the formation of SGs in response to cellular damage. The in vitro and bioinformatic analyses of the TIA-1 gene sequences of these two species highlighted interesting peculiarities, which include the transcription of alternatively spliced isoforms unique to the notothenioid lineage, potentially unlocking further insights into their unique adaptations to extreme environmental conditions. This is the first study to analyze tia-1 expression levels in different tissues of Antarctic fish species. Our key findings indicate that the TIA-1 gene is expressed at particularly high levels in the liver and spleen of C. hamatus, as well as in the heart and skeletal muscle of T. bernacchii. This suggests that those tissues play a significant role in the stress response mechanisms of the studied species. This study provides novel insights into the molecular adaptations of Antarctic fish, highlighting the potential importance of TIA-1 in their response to environmental stressors. The unique features of TIA-1 identified in these species may offer broader implications for understanding how Antarctic fish regulate gene transcriptions in their extreme environments.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Several reports in the literature have identified an association between cortisol levels and the presence of chronic pain in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, low back pain or whiplash. In contrast, few have examined the association of cortisol and pain in people with osteoarthritis (OA). The purpose of this systematic review was to verify the association between cortisol and pain in the OA population. DESIGN: The databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE were searched systematically for human studies written in English up to December 2018. Two researchers screened titles and abstracts against predefined inclusion criteria; a third resolved discrepancies. Articles were included if they measured the cortisol levels in adults with pain in the OA population. Methodological quality was assessed using Methodological Index for non-randomized Studies (MINORS) score. RESULTS: Seven studies reporting on 415 patients were included in this review. The MINORS scale yielded mean scores of 8.6 of 16 and 17.5 of 24, for the cohort and case-control studies respectively. In general, the studies were of poor quality. A discrepancy of noteworthy associations between cortisol level comparison and pain was found. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that there is a discrepancy in the relationship between cortisol and pain dependent on how and when cortisol is measured. Evidence from three low-quality studies suggest increased cortisol levels in patients with pain but the conclusions have a high risk of bias. It was not possible to make a quantitative analysis comparing the relationship between cortisol and pain in the OA population.

RESUMO

Upper respiratory infections are widespread in clinical practice. Antibiotics are frequently used in the management of patients with airways infection. However, antibiotics can induce intestinal and respiratory dysbiosis that, in turn, worsens respiratory symptoms. Moreover, respiratory infections per se can cause dysbiosis. Consequently, probiotics may counterbalance the disturbed microbiota. The current clinical experience evaluated the efficacy and safety of an oral nutraceutical containing a probiotic mixture with Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million living cells), in 2928 outpatients with an upper respiratory infection and treated with antibiotics. Patients took one stick/daily for four weeks. Simultaneously, 2877 patients with an upper respiratory infection and treated with antibiotics were recruited as control. This probiotic mixture significantly diminished the presence and the severity of respiratory symptoms at the end of the probiotic course and, more evidently, after a 3-month follow-up. In conclusion, the current clinical experience suggested that this probiotic mixture may be considered an effective and safe therapeutic option in managing patients with an upper respiratory infection and treated with antibiotics.

RESUMO

Rhinosinusitis (RS) affects the nose and the paranasal sinus and is characterized by nasal and systemic symptoms. It may be classified as acute or chronic, based on duration. Rhinosinusitis may be clinically suspected, but the diagnosis is usually based on the endoscopy. Antibiotic therapy is frequently used for RS patients in clinical practice. However, antibiotics often induce intestinal dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems and respiratory microbiota impairment. The current clinical experience was conducted in patients with pharyngotonsillitis and treated with antibiotics. A one-month course of a probiotic mixture (Abincol® containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million living cells), was prescribed in the Group A, and was compared with no addon treatment, such as the Group B. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3).

RESUMO

Laryngotracheitis is a common disease, mainly characterized by dysphonia, cough, and sore throat. The diagnosis is usually based on the clinical ground, and antibiotic therapy is frequently used in clinical practice. However, antibiotics frequently induce intestinal dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems. The current clinical experience was conducted in patients with pharyngotonsillitis and treated with antibiotics. A one-month course of a probiotic mixture (Abincol® containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million living cells), was prescribed in the Group A, and was compared with no add-on treatment, such as the Group B. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3). Globally, 833 outpatients with laryngotracheitis were enrolled: 425 in Group A and 408 in Group B. All of them were treated with a 7-10-day course of antibiotic therapy. The probiotic mixture reduced the duration of symptoms associated with antibiotic therapy already at the end of the antibiotic cycle. The intergroup comparison showed that probiotic group patients experienced less fever, tiredness, headache, pain, malaise, diarrhea, and nausea (p<0.001 for all) than control patients at T1. The probiotic course reduced the possible clinical relapse, and the use of additional medications at T2 and T3. In conclusion, the present clinical experience demonstrated that a probiotic mixture containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies delbrueckii, was able to rapidly reduce symptoms associated with antibiotic therapy in patients with laryngotracheitis.

RESUMO

Pharyngotonsillitis is a common disease, mainly characterized by a sore throat. It may be classified as acute or chronic, based on duration. The diagnosis is usually performed on the clinical ground, and antibiotic therapy is frequently used in clinical practice. However, antibiotics frequently induce intestinal dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems. Therefore, probiotics are commonly prescribed in patients treated with antibiotics. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3). Globally, 1118 outpatients were enrolled. Acute pharyngotonsillitis affected 795 subjects: 396 in Group A and 399 in Group B. Chronic pharyngotonsillitis affected 323 outpatients: 158 in Group A and 165 in Group B. All patients were usually treated with a 7-10-day course of antibiotic therapy. In patients with acute pharyngotonsillitis, the probiotic mixture significantly reduced the duration of all the symptoms (p<0.001 for all), except for the urinary tract infection, associated with antibiotic therapy which was already at the end of the antibiotic cycle (T1). The intergroup analysis showed that patients with chronic pharyngotonsillitis in Group A had significantly less tiredness, pain, and malaise (p<0.001 for all) than patients in Group B at T1. The probiotic course reduced the possible clinical relapse, and the use of additional medications at T2 and T3 in patients with both acute and chronic pharyngotonsillitis. In conclusion, the present clinical experience demonstrated that a probiotic mixture containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii, was able to quickly reduce symptoms, possible relapse, and use of additional medications, associated with antibiotic therapy, in patients with both acute and chronic pharyngotonsillitis.

RESUMO

Otitis media (OM) affects the middle ear and is typically characterized by earache. OM may be classified as acute (AOM) or chronic (COM), based on symptom duration. OM may be clinically suspected, but the diagnosis is usually confirmed by the otoscopy. Antibiotic therapy is frequently used in clinical practice. However, antibiotics often induce intestinal and respiratory dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The best surgical modality for treating chronic periprosthetic hip infections remains controversial, with a lack of randomised controlled studies. The aim of this systematic review is to compare the infection recurrence rate after a single-stage versus a two-stage exchange arthroplasty, and the rate of cemented versus cementless single-stage exchange arthroplasty for chronic periprosthetic hip infections. METHODS: We searched for eligible studies published up to December 2015. Full text or abstract in English were reviewed. We included studies reporting the infection recurrence rate as the outcome of interest following single- or two-stage exchange arthroplasty, or both, with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Two reviewers independently abstracted data and appraised quality assessment. RESULTS: After study selection, 90 observational studies were included. The majority of studies were focused on a two-stage hip exchange arthroplasty (65 %), 18 % on a single-stage exchange, and only a 17 % were comparative studies. There was no statistically significant difference between a single-stage versus a two-stage exchange in terms of recurrence of infection in controlled studies (pooled odds ratio of 1.37 [95 % CI = 0.68-2.74, I2 = 45.5 %]). Similarly, the recurrence infection rate in cementless versus cemented single-stage hip exchanges failed to demonstrate a significant difference, due to the substantial heterogeneity among the studies. CONCLUSION: Despite the methodological limitations and the heterogeneity between single cohorts studies, if we considered only the available controlled studies no superiority was demonstrated between a single- and two-stage exchange at a minimum of 12 months follow-up. The overalapping of confidence intervals related to single-stage cementless and cemented hip exchanges, showed no superiority of either technique.

RESUMO

Endocannabinoids are a class of lipid mediators involved in a wide range of physiological pathways including pain perception, and immunological defences. In particular, the involvement of endocannabinoids in bone metabolism and bone resorption has recently been studied. Moreover, one study on total knee arthroplasty describes the probable role of endocannabinoids in pain perception after surgery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate variations of endocannabinoid concentrations in patients undergoing total hip or total knee arthroplasty before and after surgery. Sera from 23 patients were collected at three different times: before surgery and at two different times during rehabilitation, and endocannabinoids were quantified by HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Mean values of endocannabinoids in presurgical serum samples were: 6.11±0.5 ng/ml for N-palmitoylethanolamide, 1.39±0.08ng/ml for N-stearoylethanolamide, 4.84±0.04 ng/ml for N-oleoylethanolamide, 0.44±0.03ng/ml for N-arachidonoylethanolamide, 0.84±0.05ng/ml for N-linoleoylethanolamide, 0.17±0.01ng/ml for N-α-linolenoylethanolamide. Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease of all the endocannabinoids after surgery, while there were no remarkable differences between total hip and total knee arthroplasties or between genders. Moreover, the results show no significant correlation between endocannabinoid concentrations and C-reactive protein and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The present study shows for the first time a specific and univocal behaviour of six endocannabinoids and N-acylethanolamides in orthopaedic surgery, suggesting the endocannabinoid system as a possible pharmacological target for presurgical therapeutics.

RESUMO

Despite the clinical importance of bone metastases, we still know little about their onset and progression and current diagnostic tools lack the sensitivity and specificity required for clear early diagnosis. We therefore need to continue studying the pathogenesis of bone metastatic invasion in order to improve diagnosis. The Wnt pathway has been described as having an important role in bone carcinogenesis and metastatic progression. This study investigated the diagnostic potential of the two main Wnt inhibitors, sclerostin and DKK-1, to improve the detection of osteolytic bone metastases. We measured sclerostin and DKK-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9, the bone resorption marker TRAP5b and the metastatic marker survivin in a control group of healthy patients, in patients with primary tumors and in a group with metastasis. Sclerostin and DKK-1 were clearly high in primary tumor patients and even higher in metastatic patients, compared to controls. The close correlations with metastatic markers and bone resorption markers make sclerostin and DKK-1 promising as new biomarkers in the diagnosis of bone osteolytic metastases.

RESUMO

Despite the clinical importance of metastasis to the skeleton, the diagnostic tools for early detection and monitoring of bone metastasis lack sensitivity and specificity. We evaluated a promising new serum biomarker, the soluble form of the Receptor of Advanced Glycosylated End-products (sRAGE). sRAGE is involved in the Wnt-signaling pathway, and has been reported to reduce the risk of cancer. We investigated the diagnostic potential of sRAGE to improve the detection and monitoring of bone metastasis. We measured sRAGE in the serum of control healthy subjects, patients with primary tumors and patients with bone metastasis. sRAGE was also correlated with the Wnt inhibitors DKK-1 and sclerostin, the bone resorption markers MMP-2, MMP-9 and TRAP5, and the metastatic marker survivin. sRAGE was significantly lower in primary tumor and metastatic patients than in healthy subjects. sRAGE also showed a strong negative correlation with DKK-1, sclerostin, MMP-2, MMP-9, TRAP5b and survivin. These results indicated that sRAGE might play a protective role in bone metastasis progression, and it may diagnostic significance for detecting and monitoring osteolytic metastases.

RESUMO

Since the optimal incubation period of cultures for diagnosis of bone and joint infections is still a matter of debate, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of different incubation periods (5 and 15 days) on microbial isolation. Samples from 387 patients with bone and joint infections (including prosthetic ones) were analyzed from March 2012 to February 2014. In 197 patients (51 %) growth was obtained within 48 hrs, while in 124 (32 %) and 66 (17 %) patients cultures yielded positive results within and after 5 days of incubation, respectively. Of 449 microorganisms isolated, 247 grew within 48 hrs, 131 within the first 5 days of incubation while 71 were isolated after 5 days. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated pathogen within 48 hrs, while Propionibacteria were prevalently isolated after 5 days of incubation. Interestingly, about 25 % of microorganisms isolated after 5 days of incubation were coagulase-negative staphylococci. Extending incubation period of broth cultures improves isolation rates of pathogens involved in bone and joint infections thus improving management of these infections.

RESUMO

Bone and joint infections are a difficult to treat condition, often associated with bone loss. Although the management of septic bone defects may currently be achieved through various treatment modalities, there is a continuous need for bone substitutes able at the same time to favour bone repair and to provide local antibacterial protection. RegenOss, a biomimetic and resorbable bone substitute, has been previously shown to be highly biocompatible and osteoconductive. Aims of the present study were to test the in vitro ability of RegenOss to act as a local carrier of antibiotics and to investigate its clinical safety and efficacy in a continuous series of patients, affected by bone loss in active or previous infection. In vitro study was performed by adding vancomycin, levofloxacin or meropenem and assessing elution properties of RegenOss at fixed time intervals by means of a microbiological assay. At 48 hours, 98.5% of meropenem, 94.1% of levofloxacin and 76.3% of vancomycin were recovered in the medium, while all antibiotics were completely eluted at seven days. Clinical safety and efficacy of vancomicyn- or vancomicyn and meropenem-loaded RegenOss had been tested in 13 consecutive patients. After the surgical procedure, each patient underwent clinical, laboratory and radiographic evaluation at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. No adverse events associated with the use of RegenOss were observed. Twelve patients showed no infection recurrence and ten satisfactory bone healing at follow-up. In conclusion, this study shows the ability of RegenOss to act as local carrier when loaded with three different antibiotics with a complete elution in one week. The clinical use of antibiotic-loaded RegenOss appears safe in this preliminary clinical series, while larger studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of the intra-operative combination of this biomimetic bone substitute with various antibacterials in the treatment of septic bone defects.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We investigated sub-clinical cardiovascular involvement in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients by means of ADMA, coronary flow reserve (CFR), intima media thickness (cIMT), pulse wave velocity (PWV) and myocardial deformation. METHODS: The study involved 22 outpatients with pSS (6 males, 16 females; mean age 60.14±7.81 years) and no documentable cardiovascular disease, and 22 age- and gender-matched controls. Dipyridamole transthoracic stress echocardiography was used to evaluate wall motion and CFR. A CFR value of <2.5 was considered a sign of impaired coronary function. We also evaluated cIMT arterial stiffness PWV and plasma ADMA levels, and made a speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) analysis. RESULTS: All of the patients were affected by pSS. Although within the normal range, the patients' CFR was lower than that of the controls (median 2.70; IQR 2.40-2.90 vs. 3.20; IQR 3.06-3.33; p<0.0001), whereas their ADMA levels were significantly higher (median 0.81 µM; IQR 0.79-0.85 µM vs. 0.54 µM; IQR 0.52-0.58 µM; p<0.0001). Both left and right PWV values were significantly higher in the patients than in the controls (median 8.8 m/s right and 8.9 m/s left vs. 6.86 and 6.89 m/s), whereas QIMT was substantially similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Higher ADMA levels suggest the presence of endothelial dysfunction and sub-clinical atherosclerosis in pSS patients, even in the case of a normal CFR. This finding is supported by the PWV values, which were higher in the pSS patients. ADMA levels and PWV values may be useful markers for identifying early endothelial dysfunction in pSS patients.

RESUMO

Little is known on how elderly patients recover pre-operative haemoglobin, haematocrit and red blood cell levels after total hip and knee arthroplasties. In this study we aimed to evaluate blood loss and recovery blood levels in relation to gender, type of surgery and preoperative haemoglobin values. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on 187 patients over 65 years of age who underwent total knee or total hip arthroplasty between January 2008 and December 2009. Preoperative blood analysis was carried out within 40 days prior to intervention followed by a 15-day postoperative follow-up. Haemoglobin recovery values in anaemic patients versus healthy patients was also estimated. All tested values decreased significantly during the first 3-5 postoperative days. Haemoglobin levels decreased statistically significantly more in males than in females, while no significant differences were observed for haematocrit and erythrocytes. Recovery of haemoglobin values did not differ significantly between healthy patients and patients with preoperative haemoglobin below 120 g/L. Furthermore, our data showed a higher blood loss in total hip arthroplasty, whilst recovery rates showed to be higher after a total knee arthroplasty procedure. In conclusion, the type of intervention and gender played an important role in blood loss and recovery rates in total joint arthroplasty.

RESUMO

In the last decades the prevalence of allergic diseases and eczema raised significantly, and today they are the most common chronic pathologies affecting children. It has been shown that a functional intestinal mucosa provides a defensive barrier to the host against potential dangerous antigens, regulating the tolerance to them. Some inflammatory diseases of the gut weaken the barrier causing an increase in the mucosa permeability and in antigenic transition. As a consequence, there is an aberrant immune response and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines further compromises the barrier functionality. It has been demonstrated that a correlation between allergy and eczema onset and the intestinal microflora composition exists, and in particular, it has been showed that some microorganisms are able to influence the immune response. For these reasons it has been hypothesized that probiotics may have a beneficial role in preventing and treating allergies and eczema. However, the benefits of this treatment depend on many factors, such as the bacterial strain, the duration of administration, the pathology, the patient characteristics (age, diet, allergy predisposition). The aim of this work was to review the present knowledge about the use of probiotics in allergic diseases and eczema, highlighting their role in the aforementioned pathologies.

RESUMO

We evaluated the effect of different inflammatory conditions on iron status and, as a consequence, the possible use of iron markers as indicators of infection in the diagnosis of postoperative prosthetic orthopaedic joint infections. The study population was consisted of 26 patients undergoing revision of total hip or total knee joint arthroplasty and subdivided into three groups according to the cause of prosthesis implant failure: 10 as having had previous infection (Group A), 10 patients were categorized as having infection (Group B); and the remaining 6 (Group C) as not having infection. These patients were assayed for mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and serum values of iron (Fe), ferritin (Fer), transferrin (Tf), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), and transferrin saturation (sat Tf). Septic patients display statistically significant lower serum iron concentration, higher sTfR and ferritin levels, lower, but not statistically significant, MCHC compared to non septic ones. Little differences were observed for Tf, sat Tf, tibc, TfR index, among the three groups of patients. Our study suggests that iron status parameters, in particular serum iron, ferritin, sTfR and TfR index, could be useful tools for the early detection and the diagnosis of orthopaedic prosthetic joint infections.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The best method for treating chronic periprosthetic knee infection remains controversial. Randomized, comparative studies on treatment modalities are lacking. This systematic review of the literature compares the infection eradication rate after two-stage versus one-stage revision and static versus articulating spacers in two-stage procedures. METHODS: We reviewed full-text papers and those with an abstract in English published from 1966 through 2011 that reported the success rate of infection eradication after one-stage or two-stage revision with two different types of spacers. RESULTS: In all, 6 original articles reporting the results after one-stage knee exchange arthoplasty (n = 204) and 38 papers reporting on two-stage revision (n = 1,421) were reviewed. The average success rate in the eradication of infection was 89.8% after a two-stage revision and 81.9% after a one-stage procedure at a mean follow-up of 44.7 and 40.7 months, respectively. The average infection eradication rate after a two-stage procedure was slightly, although significantly, higher when an articulating spacer rather than a static spacer was used (91.2 versus 87%). CONCLUSIONS: The methodological limitations of this study and the heterogeneous material in the studies reviewed notwithstanding, this systematic review shows that, on average, a two-stage procedure is associated with a higher rate of eradication of infection than one-stage revision for septic knee prosthesis and that articulating spacers are associated with a lower recurrence of infection than static spacers at a comparable mean duration of follow-up. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus pneumoniae has shown a great ability to develop efficacious mechanisms of resistance to the main drugs for the treatment of pneumonia, such as ß-lactams, macrolides and fluoroquinolones. The present study aimed to compare the antipneumococcal activity of combinations of respiratory fluoroquinolones with cephalosporins (either parenteral or oral) or protected penicillin versus the standard combinations (i.e. a macrolide with a protected penicillin or cephalosporin) against 100 isolates with different susceptibilities to macrolides and/or penicillin. METHODS: Chequerboard assays for all isolates and time-kill curves for nine isolates with different patterns of susceptibility were performed. Synergy between antibiotics at serum peak concentrations was also determined. RESULTS: The combination of levofloxacin with ceftriaxone produced the highest rate of synergy (54/100), mainly against macrolide-resistant strains (22/30). Antagonism was not observed for any tested combination apart from clarithromycin with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (22/100 isolates). Although the killing activities of all antibiotics improved when they were tested in combination, synergy was observed only for some combinations after 12 and/or 24 h. Serum concentrations were effective in inhibiting the growth of the tested strains. CONCLUSIONS: Combinations of levofloxacin with parenteral cephalosporins were the most active among all the tested combinations, while antagonism occurred when clarithromycin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid were tested.

RESUMO

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease characterized by xerosis, pruritus and eczema. The role of probiotics in the prevention and the treatment of AD have been extensively studied in children with controversial results while there are few studies on an adult population. The aim of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the intake of a probiotic strain (Lactobacillus salivarius LS01) in the treatment of adult patients with AD. A group of 38 patients was treated with probiotics or placebo (maltodextrin) for 16 weeks. The study was performed from January (T0) to May, 2009 (T16). The assessment of efficacy was based on change in SCORAD (SCORing Atopic Dermatitis) index, dermatology life quality index (DLQI) improvement, cytokine production by PBMCs and ability to modify faecal microbial flora. No significant adverse events were recorded during the study. Patients treated with probiotics showed a statistically improvement of both clinical parameters (SCORAD p<0.0001 and DLQI p= 0.021) at the end of treatment (T16) compared with the placebo group. Furthermore, after four months of treatment there was a significant reduction of Th1 cytokines (IL-12+IFNgamma) (p= 0.03) and Th1/Th2 ratio (IL-12+IFNgamma/IL-4+IL-5) (p= 0.019) only in placebo-treated patients. A statistically relevant decrease of staphylococci in faeces of the probiotictreated group was also observed at the end of treatment. In our study, the administration of L. salivarius LS01 was well tolerated and was associated with a significant improvement of clinical manifestation and QoL. This probiotic strain could have an important role in modulating Th1/Th2 cytokine profiles and could be considered as an important adjunctive therapy in the treatment of adult AD.
